I have been as tourist in NYC probably 60 + times. I just don't remember a mistake. It's my favorite city in the whole World and I enjoyed being there every single time.
It took me some time to realize that it’s not rude to ignore people. It’s easier to ignore homeless people, but you don’t have to stop and talk to anyone that tries selling you anything. Especially those “rappers” in Times Square giving their CDs away for “free” with a small donation. You don’t have to talk to the people in costumes. And if you’re polite and stop to talk to someone, and then you realize that they’re trying to sell you something, it’s ok to abruptly walk away.
Another good one, Jon. I'm from NY, moved here in the 1980's "just for one year" and that's the way life goes. I've gotten asked more than once by people who need a quick answer where there's a public restroom (not one of NYC's strong points). I remember the last time was a British woman coming off the Brooklyn Bridge and I just pointed her in the direction of the nearest Starbucks on Park Row. I remember one of George Costanza's many talents was his knowledge of where to go anywhere in Manhattan. It would be kinda off-beat to do a video on this topic, but edgy and uber-helpful to out-of-towners and locals at the same time.
No mistakes I live here lol! Some tips...subway/bus maps are free! If there is one, Get them from token booth clerk when getting metro cards or download from MTA site. Also airports have public transportation to NYC, so If you not carrying much take the bus. LGA has M60 that take you Manhattan and you can grab the train. Also ask people we don’t bite.
My biggest mistake on my first trip to NYC in 1994 was to travel with two people that weren´t close friends of mine. I would have enjoyed a hundred times more exploring New York on my own! Cheers from Chile!
Ok. I been doing NYC for about 12 years 3 to 4 times per year. My first mistake was staying with relatives. They of course didn't have time to show me around do after about 3 days I hit the streets running. 2nd mistake GO BY YOURSELF if you like to live and move like a new yorker. They complain about the rushing. They complain about the subway station stairs. They complain about the cost of food. If anyone comes with me. I warn them. Either you keep up or you stay in the hotel. Love your videos.

V Kendrick YES. I had a much better experience trekking around NYC when I stopped thinking and moving like a tourist and started thinking more like I lived there.
I went in early March and it was awesome! I enjoyed a picnic in Central Park, walked the Brooklyn bridge. A sweater and a jacket was all I needed, not sure why he said not to go.
Love the way the video turned out! Thanks for letting me be a part of it! One mistake that I could see how someone easily make, is not carrying cash AND a credit card. Lots of businesses (particularly small restaurants) only accept cash, but we did encounter one business on our last trip that was cashless and ONLY accepted credit cards. This seems to be a trend, so that's a good thing to know.

Oh, I remember my first visit to big apple. I rent a small room in the middle of the sunset park via airbnb. Next day after arrival I decided to walk by feet to the Coney Island)) jatlug and map made me to take a longest walk I've ever had))) but next day I walked from soho to Harlem by feet. Guys, if you want to see NYC, please use its public transportation and never try to walk through some specific boroughs alone, in 6 a. M. It was pretty interesting, but scary a couple of moments))))
My mistake? Landing at JFK, around 4pm, then after an 8 hour transatlantic flight, what did I do first in NYC, whilst still majorly jetlagged? Go to times Square at 8pm 😂 Wait until you're rested up before going into Manhattan 👍🏻
I’m going in 2 weeks, for the first time. I’m from Cali & a buddy of mine moved to Cali from Queens just 3 years ago, after being born and raised there. I told him abt my trip & I was planning on going for only 4 days as well. He told me that it wasn’t enough, so I booked an extra 5 days. That way I can have a bit more time to go to all the places he recommended me😁
I travel to NYC a few times a year and love it so much. I have made almost all of these mistakes at one time or another. Upon reflection, I think my one of my biggest mistakes when I first started traveling was to either take a cab or car from the airport to the hotel. The public transportation is pretty easy to navigate and now I know to pack super light and pay $7 instead of $75 to get into the city. Thanks for making this video. @@teresahoward7821 Indeed. Although the girlfriends that I go with still don't get it. The continue to bring HUGE suitcases. I also have gotten to the point that I just hate checking bags. So if something doesn't fit into my carry on, it doesn't go. And even my carry on is becoming too much for me. I was working on packing everything into a small under the seat bag....until I had 3 of my events canceled because of the virus. But I can't wait to try!
The biggest mistake was probably staying in Midtown (15 min walk to get to Times Square). Coming from a small town in the north of Germany I was overwhelmed by the constant noise and couldn't properly sleep for the first 3-4 nights until I got used to it. During my second visit I stayed in Park Slope, Brooklyn and slept like a baby. :) I can also relate to Brent's story. I didn't know about the difference between express trains and local trains, took the A train to get to Central Park and accidentally ended up at 125th street in Harlem.
I’m a local resident and I still sometimes screw up and get on express trains that make me overshoot my destination. Often seems to happen when I’m in a hurry to get somewhere, too. 😡
John As a Brooklynite. I only saw 1 person say about the weather. Unfortunately the weather in New York this Memorial weekend is rainy and very cool weather like March or early April. Weather in NYC changes very quick to hazy hot and humid days from June to early September. To Artic air from December to March ( especially February.) We get Severe Thunderstorms during Spring, Summer and early Fall. We get Snowstorms and some of those can cause Blizzard like conditions. In other words people should be prepared for the weather in New York. Great video 👍
I've been to NYC four times now, but my biggest mistake the first time I was there was not allocating enough time for everything I had planned, such as museums and shops.
Hi John I have no mistakes because I lived in brooklyn from 1945 to 1973 and brooklyn was so beautiful compared to now. What miss the most the knishes and bath and hot dogs also the chocolate egg cream.
Great advice about Jersey City! First-time visitors can look on a map and see it looks very close, but then realize too late that it’s far away temporally. Do your research before you pick a spot. Plan to spend most of your time exploring Manhattan but the Manhattan hotels and AirBnB’s are too expensive or have no vacancies? Look farther around but don’t look as the crow flies - look at the subway map and the number of stops. Then you’ll know how far away you really are in terms of time. For example, Long Island City can be a great option as even though it’s in Queens, it’s just one subway stop away (or two or three) from Grand Central Station. LOOK AT THE SUBWAY ROUTES when you plan your lodging.

My first trip to New York by myself around 20 years ago, so I don't know if this still happens .. I bought a Broadway ticket for Phantom of the Opera from the hotel concierge, and then discovered that I paid way above the price that was printed on the ticket. I wouldn't have been surprised at some convenience change, but this was a LOT. So, I would say to always buy any tickets at the theater, or at least a reputable ticket broker.
My biggest mistake was wanting to save money on a hotel which turned into an epic fail back in 2014. Although we paid less per night for a hotel, we spent WAY more on ground transportation. My family and I flew into LGA and rented a minivan (which we barely used) so we could stay in East Brunswick, NJ. Each day we went into Manhattan, we paid to park at the transit center at Secaucus Junction and took the train into Penn Station. Big mistake! Epic fail on my part. When we went to NYC in 2019, we went with a large group of friends and family and split the cost of a coach bus from LGA to our hotel in Midtown Manhattan.

My biggest mistake on my first visit, taking a cab going to Top of the Rock, from the Palace hotel. And I did not realize it until my next visit. 🤦♀️ Lesson learned, NYC is walkable, use apps for direction and walk! It's been my fave city for walking eversince (or maybe it's a tie between NYC and Taipei 😊)
Do a video on free public restrooms. Many, many years ago, I had to "go" and went to the Port Authority men's room and the stalls were all gone. Left and thankfully ran into a friend who lived in Manhattan and used his bathroom.
Brusselse that wont always work unfortunately just google the location of the nearest Whole Foods of which there are many in Manhattan which has decent rest rooms
We stayed in Jamaica one night to save money when we arrived late to JFK. It was an okay motel room, but the car alarm going off incessantly in the motel parking lot made it difficult to sleep. After a couple hours the manager figured out whose car it was and resolved the issue. We always take red eyes from Los Angeles now so that we arrive in the morning and have plenty of time to check into our hotel room in Manhattan.
My 1st trip to NYC I booked a hotel room far in advance for a month long visit but only put a deposit down at the time of booking. I opted to not pay in full at the time of booking figuring I'd just pay when I arrived at the hotel on the first day. BIG MISTAKE. At checkin the rates had increased for that month because of demand. Apparently there was some kind of boating event going on and every hotel was booked solid so I paid 3times more per night for my room then if I would have just paid in full at the time of booking...yep you live you learn.
In 1991 I stayed on 63rd st near Lincoln center ,not 47st on the east side it was 7 blocks from where my friend Richard Gross lived. He was a restaurant critic. He got me free meals and could get into clubs for free. Richard Gross knew how to comp NY. 63rd st was a little out of the way for my friends. Richard had a friend pick him up from westChester county. So that eliminated the cab fare. Richard worked for tv show entertainment connection.
Luckily I watched channels such as yours and Sarah Funk for a good while before we went. We spent 8 days in NYC and had the absolute best time of our lives. Probably crammed a little too much in but still had spare time to wander about. Citymapper will be your best friend!
I’m just now seeing this comment and me and my girlfriend are planning on staying 10 days in NYC so that way we have time to do a lot of things. I would say that if people are able to afford to stay there longer, do it because you won’t have as bad of a time crunch than you would if you’re there for say 3-4 days.
My husband and I visited in 2017 for our 10th wedding anniversary. Our mistake was trying to do too much without properly preparing. We took a Free Tours by Foot tour every single day of our trip and actually tackled 2 tours one day. By the middle of the week, our feet were so sore from all the walking. We had good shoes, but we weren't used to walking miles and miles each day. We felt like we needed to be constantly moving and taking advantage of our time away from our responsibilities back home. We would leave our hotel room around 8am and not get back until 10 or 10:30 each night. We packed our schedule so full that we had little time to do (or re-visit) anything not on the schedule. We ended up riding the Staten Island Ferry three times just because it was a nice excuse to sit for 30 minutes and enjoy the breeze (we visited in August). In the end, I loved all we got to see and do, but we came home completely exhausted and with a "been there, done that" mentality about the city. It took almost 2 years for me to want to go back to NYC, a place I've been dying to visit since I was a child. Looking forward to our next trip and already have a list of things to do differently!
Our biggest mistake my girlfriend and I when we went to NY last summer was not visiting rooftop lounges or bars. But at the same time we did great because of you Here Be Barr!! Thank you !
I think my mistake (not first time visiting since I was too young to remember anything, but later on like 3rd trip in my life) was 1) planning everything out so much. It not only made us miss the spontaneous and mom-and-pop kinda stuff that are unique to NYC, but also made us unable to do everything we wanted to during our trip because; 2) If anything, plan stuff out by borough because you can't be running from Brooklyn to Manhattan to Chinatown in one day.
My first trip was in 2014. The biggest mistake I made was using roaming on my mobile phone, I 'managed' to rack up around $200 in extra charges(usually my monthly bill is around $10). Since then I always buy a prepaid sim card after I get to the city. Awesome idea for the video, would like to see more like it. Cheers from Romania!
Living too far from manhattan is also my mistakes too. The cheaper Airbnb is not worth the waste of time to commute or the worries I have about staying out too late and hard to go back home.
I made my first trip to NYC last September. In the first 12 hours I lost my glasses. It was some point between a birthday party and the subway ride home after the strip club. I had to scrap my plans to do views like Top of The Rock. Still had good experiences like The High Line, but had to rock the standard definition quality. My advice to others is to mix your own drinks.
Kyla and Andrew's tip is awesome. My husband and I did the same on our first trip in April of 2019. ( was scheduled for Sept 2018, Hurricane Florence came so we had to cancel because of my job as a first responder) , and our second trip scheduled for March of this year was going to be a do local stuff. We had to cancel because of the pandemic. I think us planning trips to NYC is bad luck!
It's funny how one persons mistake is another persons positive. I love staying close to Times Square - close to the hustle and bustle, the shops, the theatres, the urine soaked alleys lol. Falling asleep to the sound of fire trucks and garbage collectors is just great. Nobody travels to NYC for peace and quiet.
My biggest mistake on my first trip to NYC was telling my mom I’m going !! I was traveling alone with my kids and because of that I have to vacation short and spent 3 days visiting relatives ! 🤦🏻♀️

I can definitely agree on the “not go in March” tip. It’s very cold, no green spaces look green... it’s not the enjoyable Christmas winter time, or warm enough either, more like something uncomfortable in between
My biggest mistake was when I first moved to the Bronx I took a 5 train to get home and did not realize that it doesn't always stop at Burke Ave. So I ended up in Morris Park by mistake instead of on Burke. The 5 train only goes there during rush hour times, so I ended up getting very lost trying to get home.
Eduard’s suggestion about staying in September lands you squarely in the what’s probably the most-expensive and -hectic season for hotels, as that’s when the UN General Assembly meets, not to mention the throngs visiting US Open Tennis. Late March tends to be much milder than early March, so consider that part of the season for more-affordable hotel rates and decent weather.
I also stayed in Jersey City on my first trip. The Airbnb was gorgeous and I loved it but man I wish it was closer. I also went in January on my first trip. During the polar vortex. 😅
My “first” (technically my second but first one being an adult) trip to NY was a disaster 😂 I wasn’t aware of the many subways lines so I walked everywhere which was extremely tiring. Also for some reason I stayed in Times Square the entire weekend. That’s literally the only thing I did. This was my second trip to NY and even after 2 times i’ve never seen Central Park or the Statue of Liberty 😭 I was supposed to go back this summer but of course corona had to happen. Hopefully 3rd times a charm. Also I disagree about the March tip! I went in March and it was veryyyy warm outside. Also I went Easter weekend which turned out to be a mistake because of the huge crowds
Made no mistakes on my first 12-day visit last year June, thanks to your video's Jon Barr! Arrived on a Saturday, took a cab to my airbnb in the far south of Brooklyn. Around 43 $ a night, bathroom and kitchenette with a microwave, super quiet, slept like a baby there, never regretted it. Manhattan Beach close by. Due to jetlag I woke up around 5:30 am on Sunday morning, got a seven day subway ticket, took me about an hour to get to Manhattan (but had counted on that, no problem for me). Got out at Union Square, my very first encounter with Manhattan. It was quiet, there was no one! Had a wonderful quiet walk and excellent breakfast at Tea and Sympathy. As I am a history buff i had a 5-day "The New York Pass" (when ordering it when still home i had noticed that starting from Wednesday every week there was a reduction in price of about 70 $). Managed to combine several museums and activities, all added up that New York Pass saved me some money, but had to run sometimes to get everything done. Skipped the Statue of Liberty (had made no reservation to visit the crown), went immediately to Ellis Island where I spent a whole day, which was truly value for money (did the excellent Hard Hat Tour.) Excellent pizza at Bleeker street (thank you so much Jon), but had very good pizza at Saba's Pizza on Lexington Avenue as well. Took the subway often but walked so much, lost 3 kilo's during those 12 days. Sometimes went out for dinner, also bought food at Trader Joe's (excellent place, Jon!) to take home and heat in the microwave. Only mistake made: bought a travel adapter at a shitty small shop, the owner printed out the ticket but when I paid with my credit card, a different amount, 2$ more expensive flashed on the counter. Later that adapter broke down. Never paid with my creditcard again at small shops and restaurants.
I just got back from New York to Hawaii yesterday (my second trip. 2 weeks long) I did a lot of touristy stuff my first trip and overbooked it in 2019 and ended up not being able to do everything on my list, so thats why i went back. so glad i was able to visit the bronx, brooklyn, and queens this time thanks to your videos. best trip ever and i plan to go again.
1- Buying Citypass bus tickets for my family thinking that I would take advantage of unlimited rides. It's not convenient if the buses run every 15 min or more in certain streets. Just take the subway or walk. 2.- Parking your car in Secaucus during the week to take NJT to midtown. Parking lot is full , I usually park on the weekends and no problem. The app Icon saved my day and found parking in the city for a reasonable price. 3- Dont drink a lot of water, scarcity of public restrooms. 4- Forget your phone charger . I went for a day trip, had to buy a new one, kill time in stbks while charging to buy online NJT tickets.

Love the Brady Bunch-esqe thumbnail LOL! Besides the mistake I mentioned in the video, another one I thought of was not considering the trip from the airport to hotel. Unless you take a taxi, its a real PAIN to cart huge suitcases around Newark and Manhattan. I literally landed in Newark, hopped on the airport tram to the Amtrak to the subway headed to Penn Station. LOL! Paying for a cab and or Uber is BEYOND worth the money. I'll just say that lol
Depending on the size of your luggage and party yes.. If i'm solo and have a small suitcase i prefer a train. IF it's Adriana and I at 5 AM at EWR, uber please :)
I made that mistake once, traveling with my mom. The worst part was that it was on a Friday and we arrived at Penn Station around 5:00 pm. It was a nightmare to get out of there. Never again!!!
I don’t know if I’m just ignorant, but I’m staying in Brooklyn in may and a 45 minute journey to GCT seems really short. Maybe that’s just because I like in Suffolk UK and the closest city to me is a 90 minute car ride🤷🏽♂️
I am going to be a bit controversial! In the UK we do not have some of your big chain restaurants, a times Square, statue of liberty etc. So will say visit them... But in moderation. My wife loves Madame Tussauds (I'm not the biggest fan) and my biggest regret was not going to MSG to see Billy Joel in concert. We did not cram in everything and enjoyed our 1st time stay. Fortunately we are back May 2022 and Billy is still there!
Omg Susie, I had this problem this last trip when I was close to Grand Central Terminal. Turns out that what we were looking for was inside the terminal in the food court😂
I made the mistake of shopping first. My mother and I took the Amtrak for a day trip. We shopped, but then had to carry our purchases with us the rest of the day. We should have set aside time to shop last before heading back to Penn Station.
Biggest mistake was a few of these, trying to cram too much into one weekend, I probably slept a total of 6 hours all weekend and was so exhausted I almost missed my flight home. Next mistake was going with 2 friends who were the PICKIEST eaters I’ve ever met, one doesn’t like ethnic food and the other didn’t eat gluten so The food experience was boring bc we had to make them happy. Thirdly I did not know about these Disney characters who expect tips, and when I gave Minnie Mouse a dollar she was NOT happy with that cheap tip. I’m going back in October with my kids but I plan to watch all your videos first!!🤣
I am from Texas and I went to 3 hockey games (Devils, Islanders and Ranger) and a lot more. Really when I travel I spend hours and days researching thing to do and see. Every town has free things and they are listed online and the time things are open. Buy my ticket ahead of time to major attractions and I buy hop on hop off rides. I also use Groupon to book and buy most tickets. The biggest scam was buying tickets to the Statue of Liberty, which I did not fall in to that trap. I am 60 and I have always been a planner planner, just one of the thing I have to do. Truly makes a vacation very easy going to know everything is in order and no surprises or missing what you really wanted to do. We went to Italy for a month and it took me about 6 months to plan it all, we did not miss anything we planed, even down time and a wedding.
I have 2!: First trip to NYC , I happily was taking pictures of the horse carriages in Central Park when a small old guy demanded I give him my SD card or pay him 20 bucks for the pictures! I realized he was keeping an eye on the carriages and he was no having me taking photos of them . I said no are you crazy and then he proceeded to "beat" me with a baton. I started to run and ran into a police car and the police started laughing their asses off! Later that week I was walking a pedestrian crossing near NYU, quiet street I was the only one around and I had the pedestrian green light. I saw a taxi approaching slowly and I thought he was going to stop for me but I guess he was looking at his phone and I ended up on his hood and he started yelling me in Arabic. Oh well , I still had an awesome time. Had a trip scheduled for this October if I can't go at that time hopefully will go next year. Greetings from Costa Rica!!!!
Good video. However sometimes getting tickets from concierge is the only way to get tickets to a popular show. Then there is the fact that often it is good to go on and pay for museum online tickets because there may be a loooong wait just to get a ticket there. IMO Best to plan ahead if there is some thing you really want to do. Everyone be well and safe.
At 8:00 I feel so bad for him just imagine yourself excited as shit to go to New York and when you get there not only do you have 1 to 2 days to be there but your experience gets ruined by Santa’s everywhere pissing, shitting, fighting and arguing everywhere... LMFAO like just imagine yourself in that situation😂😂 it’s like a clusterfuck of Santa’s outbreak lol
Thanks to your videos I felt confident to take my parents to New York for an awesome trip and take good care of them ie giving back the CD that they shoved into my dads hands.
My biggest mistake the first time I came to NYC was heading straight to Times Square to take pictures...alone, mind you. So of course, the mascots around the area see that and, at first, two of them came over and asked if I wanted my picture taken, I go: "yeah, sure".....downhill from there. Eventually, more of them started coming over, and I had to stop it at some point, but then they started charging me for "tips".

We had very few mistakes thanks to watching all your videos before hand! The biggest mistake we made was taking a shuttle bus from Newark Liberty to our hotel in midtown Manhattan. It took 2 hours in traffic and was a scary ride. Next time, we will take the Path train.
@@KrystalKBeauty I had to take the hotel bus, the last trip back was 11pm. The taxi drivers wanted too much 30 dollars, maybe cheaper with Uber but this was before Uber was popular.
I booked hop on hop off with Expedia. First I had to walk to main office to redeem them. Which took about an hour. Then the buses travelled slower than it would take us to walk. They were also cold. But we paid for 3 days. Best way to travel in New York is bus or subway. Learn how to use it right away and see everything you want in short amount of time.

I live in North Jersey. It’s safe to say I’ve been to New York City so many times that I know how to get around a lot, or most of the city easily. I love eating on the Hudson River, it’s my favorite thing to do. (Moreover on the Jersey side tho.) However my friend tells me that they made contact with a stranger which gave a wider eyed stare back. Just don’t make eye contact if you don’t need too.
I once encountered a couple visiting that wanted to know how to get to I think something like 49st in the city and they are asking me directions of how to get there in Queens ( Steinway Street to be exact)
My biggest mistake was not realizing the difference between an express train and a local train. I learned this when the train didn't even slow down as it blasted through my intended stop.

I have been as tourist in NYC probably 60 + times. I just don't remember a mistake. It's my favorite city in the whole World and I enjoyed being there every single time.
It took me some time to realize that it’s not rude to ignore people. It’s easier to ignore homeless people, but you don’t have to stop and talk to anyone that tries selling you anything. Especially those “rappers” in Times Square giving their CDs away for “free” with a small donation. You don’t have to talk to the people in costumes. And if you’re polite and stop to talk to someone, and then you realize that they’re trying to sell you something, it’s ok to abruptly walk away.
As a native new yorker, this is funny to listen to. Hope you all come back and have a better time.

Another good one, Jon. I'm from NY, moved here in the 1980's "just for one year" and that's the way life goes. I've gotten asked more than once by people who need a quick answer where there's a public restroom (not one of NYC's strong points). I remember the last time was a British woman coming off the Brooklyn Bridge and I just pointed her in the direction of the nearest Starbucks on Park Row. I remember one of George Costanza's many talents was his knowledge of where to go anywhere in Manhattan. It would be kinda off-beat to do a video on this topic, but edgy and uber-helpful to out-of-towners and locals at the same time.

No mistakes I live here lol! Some tips...subway/bus maps are free! If there is one, Get them from token booth clerk when getting metro cards or download from MTA site. Also airports have public transportation to NYC, so If you not carrying much take the bus. LGA has M60 that take you Manhattan and you can grab the train. Also ask people we don’t bite.
My biggest mistake on my first trip to NYC in 1994 was to travel with two people that weren´t close friends of mine. I would have enjoyed a hundred times more exploring New York on my own! Cheers from Chile!
Ok. I been doing NYC for about 12 years 3 to 4 times per year. My first mistake was staying with relatives. They of course didn't have time to show me around do after about 3 days I hit the streets running.

GO BY YOURSELF if you like to live and move like a new yorker.
They complain about the rushing. They complain about the subway station stairs. They complain about the cost of food.
If anyone comes with me. I warn them. Either you keep up or you stay in the hotel.

V Kendrick YES. I had a much better experience trekking around NYC when I stopped thinking and moving like a tourist and started thinking more like I lived there.
I went in early March and it was awesome! I enjoyed a picnic in Central Park, walked the Brooklyn bridge. A sweater and a jacket was all I needed, not sure why he said not to go.
Love the way the video turned out! Thanks for letting me be a part of it! One mistake that I could see how someone easily make, is not carrying cash AND a credit card. Lots of businesses (particularly small restaurants) only accept cash, but we did encounter one business on our last trip that was cashless and ONLY accepted credit cards. This seems to be a trend, so that's a good thing to know.

Oh, I remember my first visit to big apple. I rent a small room in the middle of the sunset park via airbnb. Next day after arrival I decided to walk by feet to the Coney Island)) jatlug and map made me to take a longest walk I've ever had))) but next day I walked from soho to Harlem by feet. Guys, if you want to see NYC, please use its public transportation and never try to walk through some specific boroughs alone, in 6 a. M. It was pretty interesting, but scary a couple of moments))))
My mistake? Landing at JFK, around 4pm, then after an 8 hour transatlantic flight, what did I do first in NYC, whilst still majorly jetlagged? Go to times Square at 8pm 😂 Wait until you're rested up before going into Manhattan 👍🏻

I went last month and my my biggest mistake was staying for 4 days instead of a week.
I’m going in 2 weeks, for the first time. I’m from Cali & a buddy of mine moved to Cali from Queens just 3 years ago, after being born and raised there. I told him abt my trip & I was planning on going for only 4 days as well. He told me that it wasn’t enough, so I booked an extra 5 days. That way I can have a bit more time to go to all the places he recommended me😁

I travel to NYC a few times a year and love it so much. I have made almost all of these mistakes at one time or another. Upon reflection, I think my one of my biggest mistakes when I first started traveling was to either take a cab or car from the airport to the hotel. The public transportation is pretty easy to navigate and now I know to pack super light and pay $7 instead of $75 to get into the city. Thanks for making this video. I love how creative you are being with your channel.
And you learned QUICKLY not to overpack because you have to schlep that suitcase up the stairs at the subway station, didn't you? LOL! Me too!!
@@teresahoward7821 Indeed. Although the girlfriends that I go with still don't get it. The continue to bring HUGE suitcases. I also have gotten to the point that I just hate checking bags. So if something doesn't fit into my carry on, it doesn't go. And even my carry on is becoming too much for me. I was working on packing everything into a small under the seat bag....until I had 3 of my events canceled because of the virus. But I can't wait to try!
The biggest mistake was probably staying in Midtown (15 min walk to get to Times Square). Coming from a small town in the north of Germany I was overwhelmed by the constant noise and couldn't properly sleep for the first 3-4 nights until I got used to it. During my second visit I stayed in Park Slope, Brooklyn and slept like a baby. :)
I can also relate to Brent's story. I didn't know about the difference between express trains and local trains, took the A train to get to Central Park and accidentally ended up at 125th street in Harlem.
I’m a local resident and I still sometimes screw up and get on express trains that make me overshoot my destination. Often seems to happen when I’m in a hurry to get somewhere, too. 😡

As a Brooklynite. I only saw 1 person say about the weather. Unfortunately the weather in New York this Memorial weekend is rainy and very cool weather like March or early April.
Weather in NYC changes very quick to hazy hot and humid days from June to early September. To Artic air from December to March ( especially February.) We get Severe Thunderstorms during Spring, Summer and early Fall. We get Snowstorms and some of those can cause Blizzard like conditions. In other words people should be prepared for the weather in New York.

I've been to NYC four times now, but my biggest mistake the first time I was there was not allocating enough time for everything I had planned, such as museums and shops.
Hi John I have no mistakes because I lived in brooklyn from 1945 to 1973 and brooklyn was so beautiful compared to now. What miss the most the knishes and bath and hot dogs also the chocolate egg cream.
Great advice about Jersey City! First-time visitors can look on a map and see it looks very close, but then realize too late that it’s far away temporally. Do your research before you pick a spot. Plan to spend most of your time exploring Manhattan but the Manhattan hotels and AirBnB’s are too expensive or have no vacancies? Look farther around but don’t look as the crow flies - look at the subway map and the number of stops. Then you’ll know how far away you really are in terms of time. For example, Long Island City can be a great option as even though it’s in Queens, it’s just one subway stop away (or two or three) from Grand Central Station. LOOK AT THE SUBWAY ROUTES when you plan your lodging.

Being far too generous is my biggest NYC mistake.
My first trip to New York by myself around 20 years ago, so I don't know if this still happens .. I bought a Broadway ticket for Phantom of the Opera from the hotel concierge, and then discovered that I paid way above the price that was printed on the ticket. I wouldn't have been surprised at some convenience change, but this was a LOT. So, I would say to always buy any tickets at the theater, or at least a reputable ticket broker.

My biggest mistake was wanting to save money on a hotel which turned into an epic fail back in 2014. Although we paid less per night for a hotel, we spent WAY more on ground transportation. My family and I flew into LGA and rented a minivan (which we barely used) so we could stay in East Brunswick, NJ. Each day we went into Manhattan, we paid to park at the transit center at Secaucus Junction and took the train into Penn Station. Big mistake! Epic fail on my part. When we went to NYC in 2019, we went with a large group of friends and family and split the cost of a coach bus from LGA to our hotel in Midtown Manhattan.
Yeah, that sounds like a royal pain during your first trip.

My biggest mistake on my first visit, taking a cab going to Top of the Rock, from the Palace hotel. And I did not realize it until my next visit. 🤦♀️ Lesson learned, NYC is walkable, use apps for direction and walk! It's been my fave city for walking eversince (or maybe it's a tie between NYC and Taipei 😊)
#1 My family went to a food chain restaurant near Times Square #2 we didn't know how to use the subways.
Do a video on free public restrooms. Many, many years ago, I had to "go" and went to the Port Authority men's room and the stalls were all gone. Left and thankfully ran into a friend who lived in Manhattan and used his bathroom.
I politely ask at some big hotel if I can use the restroom, no problem at all
Brusselse that wont always work unfortunately just google the location of the nearest Whole Foods of which there are many in Manhattan which has decent rest rooms

We stayed in Jamaica one night to save money when we arrived late to JFK. It was an okay motel room, but the car alarm going off incessantly in the motel parking lot made it difficult to sleep. After a couple hours the manager figured out whose car it was and resolved the issue. We always take red eyes from Los Angeles now so that we arrive in the morning and have plenty of time to check into our hotel room in Manhattan.
My 1st trip to NYC I booked a hotel room far in advance for a month long visit but only put a deposit down at the time of booking. I opted to not pay in full at the time of booking figuring I'd just pay when I arrived at the hotel on the first day. BIG MISTAKE. At checkin the rates had increased for that month because of demand. Apparently there was some kind of boating event going on and every hotel was booked solid so I paid 3times more per night for my room then if I would have just paid in full at the time of booking...yep you live you learn.
In 1991 I stayed on 63rd st near Lincoln center ,not 47st on the east side it was 7 blocks from where my friend Richard Gross lived. He was a restaurant critic. He got me free meals and could get into clubs for free. Richard Gross knew how to comp NY. 63rd st was a little out of the way for my friends. Richard had a friend pick him up from westChester county. So that eliminated the cab fare. Richard worked for tv show entertainment connection.
Luckily I watched channels such as yours and Sarah Funk for a good while before we went. We spent 8 days in NYC and had the absolute best time of our lives. Probably crammed a little too much in but still had spare time to wander about. Citymapper will be your best friend!
I’m just now seeing this comment and me and my girlfriend are planning on staying 10 days in NYC so that way we have time to do a lot of things. I would say that if people are able to afford to stay there longer, do it because you won’t have as bad of a time crunch than you would if you’re there for say 3-4 days.

My husband and I visited in 2017 for our 10th wedding anniversary. Our mistake was trying to do too much without properly preparing. We took a Free Tours by Foot tour every single day of our trip and actually tackled 2 tours one day. By the middle of the week, our feet were so sore from all the walking. We had good shoes, but we weren't used to walking miles and miles each day. We felt like we needed to be constantly moving and taking advantage of our time away from our responsibilities back home. We would leave our hotel room around 8am and not get back until 10 or 10:30 each night. We packed our schedule so full that we had little time to do (or re-visit) anything not on the schedule. We ended up riding the Staten Island Ferry three times just because it was a nice excuse to sit for 30 minutes and enjoy the breeze (we visited in August). In the end, I loved all we got to see and do, but we came home completely exhausted and with a "been there, done that" mentality about the city. It took almost 2 years for me to want to go back to NYC, a place I've been dying to visit since I was a child. Looking forward to our next trip and already have a list of things to do differently!

I think my mistake (not first time visiting since I was too young to remember anything, but later on like 3rd trip in my life) was 1) planning everything out so much. It not only made us miss the spontaneous and mom-and-pop kinda stuff that are unique to NYC, but also made us unable to do everything we wanted to during our trip because; 2) If anything, plan stuff out by borough because you can't be running from Brooklyn to Manhattan to Chinatown in one day.
My first trip was in 2014. The biggest mistake I made was using roaming on my mobile phone, I 'managed' to rack up around $200 in extra charges(usually my monthly bill is around $10). Since then I always buy a prepaid sim card after I get to the city. Awesome idea for the video, would like to see more like it. Cheers from Romania!

Living too far from manhattan is also my mistakes too. The cheaper Airbnb is not worth the waste of time to commute or the worries I have about staying out too late and hard to go back home.
I made my first trip to NYC last September. In the first 12 hours I lost my glasses. It was some point between a birthday party and the subway ride home after the strip club. I had to scrap my plans to do views like Top of The Rock. Still had good experiences like The High Line, but had to rock the standard definition quality. My advice to others is to mix your own drinks.
Kyla and Andrew's tip is awesome. My husband and I did the same on our first trip in April of 2019. ( was scheduled for Sept 2018, Hurricane Florence came so we had to cancel because of my job as a first responder) , and our second trip scheduled for March of this year was going to be a do local stuff. We had to cancel because of the pandemic. I think us planning trips to NYC is bad luck!
It's funny how one persons mistake is another persons positive. I love staying close to Times Square - close to the hustle and bustle, the shops, the theatres, the urine soaked alleys lol. Falling asleep to the sound of fire trucks and garbage collectors is just great. Nobody travels to NYC for peace and quiet.
My biggest mistake on my first trip to NYC was telling my mom I’m going !! I was traveling alone with my kids and because of that I have to vacation short and spent 3 days visiting relatives ! 🤦🏻♀️

Watch those hotels or air bnb, most times if it's really cheap, it's on the outskirts of Manhattan
My biggest mistake was when I first moved to the Bronx I took a 5 train to get home and did not realize that it doesn't always stop at Burke Ave. So I ended up in Morris Park by mistake instead of on Burke. The 5 train only goes there during rush hour times, so I ended up getting very lost trying to get home.

Eduard’s suggestion about staying in September lands you squarely in the what’s probably the most-expensive and -hectic season for hotels, as that’s when the UN General Assembly meets, not to mention the throngs visiting US Open Tennis. Late March tends to be much milder than early March, so consider that part of the season for more-affordable hotel rates and decent weather.
That's a debatable point he made, but i liked it :) I actually would say May/October would be my 2 personal favorites.
I also stayed in Jersey City on my first trip. The Airbnb was gorgeous and I loved it but man I wish it was closer. I also went in January on my first trip. During the polar vortex. 😅
My “first” (technically my second but first one being an adult) trip to NY was a disaster 😂 I wasn’t aware of the many subways lines so I walked everywhere which was extremely tiring. Also for some reason I stayed in Times Square the entire weekend. That’s literally the only thing I did. This was my second trip to NY and even after 2 times i’ve never seen Central Park or the Statue of Liberty 😭 I was supposed to go back this summer but of course corona had to happen. Hopefully 3rd times a charm. Also I disagree about the March tip! I went in March and it was veryyyy warm outside. Also I went Easter weekend which turned out to be a mistake because of the huge crowds
Made no mistakes on my first 12-day visit last year June, thanks to your video's Jon Barr! Arrived on a Saturday, took a cab to my airbnb in the far south of Brooklyn. Around 43 $ a night, bathroom and kitchenette with a microwave, super quiet, slept like a baby there, never regretted it. Manhattan Beach close by. Due to jetlag I woke up around 5:30 am on Sunday morning, got a seven day subway ticket, took me about an hour to get to Manhattan (but had counted on that, no problem for me). Got out at Union Square, my very first encounter with Manhattan. It was quiet, there was no one! Had a wonderful quiet walk and excellent breakfast at Tea and Sympathy. As I am a history buff i had a 5-day "The New York Pass" (when ordering it when still home i had noticed that starting from Wednesday every week there was a reduction in price of about 70 $). Managed to combine several museums and activities, all added up that New York Pass saved me some money, but had to run sometimes to get everything done. Skipped the Statue of Liberty (had made no reservation to visit the crown), went immediately to Ellis Island where I spent a whole day, which was truly value for money (did the excellent Hard Hat Tour.) Excellent pizza at Bleeker street (thank you so much Jon), but had very good pizza at Saba's Pizza on Lexington Avenue as well. Took the subway often but walked so much, lost 3 kilo's during those 12 days. Sometimes went out for dinner, also bought food at Trader Joe's (excellent place, Jon!) to take home and heat in the microwave. Only mistake made: bought a travel adapter at a shitty small shop, the owner printed out the ticket but when I paid with my credit card, a different amount, 2$ more expensive flashed on the counter. Later that adapter broke down. Never paid with my creditcard again at small shops and restaurants.
I just got back from New York to Hawaii yesterday (my second trip. 2 weeks long) I did a lot of touristy stuff my first trip and overbooked it in 2019 and ended up not being able to do everything on my list, so thats why i went back. so glad i was able to visit the bronx, brooklyn, and queens this time thanks to your videos. best trip ever and i plan to go again.
1- Buying Citypass bus tickets for my family thinking that I would take advantage of unlimited rides. It's not convenient if the buses run every 15 min or more in certain streets. Just take the subway or walk.
2.- Parking your car in Secaucus during the week to take NJT to midtown. Parking lot is full , I usually park on the weekends and no problem. The app Icon saved my day and found parking in the city for a reasonable price.
3- Dont drink a lot of water, scarcity of public restrooms.
4- Forget your phone charger . I went for a day trip, had to buy a new one, kill time in stbks while charging to buy online NJT tickets.

Love the Brady Bunch-esqe thumbnail LOL! Besides the mistake I mentioned in the video, another one I thought of was not considering the trip from the airport to hotel. Unless you take a taxi, its a real PAIN to cart huge suitcases around Newark and Manhattan. I literally landed in Newark, hopped on the airport tram to the Amtrak to the subway headed to Penn Station. LOL! Paying for a cab and or Uber is BEYOND worth the money. I'll just say that lol
Depending on the size of your luggage and party yes.. If i'm solo and have a small suitcase i prefer a train. IF it's Adriana and I at 5 AM at EWR, uber please :)
I made that mistake once, traveling with my mom. The worst part was that it was on a Friday and we arrived at Penn Station around 5:00 pm. It was a nightmare to get out of there. Never again!!!
I don’t know if I’m just ignorant, but I’m staying in Brooklyn in may and a 45 minute journey to GCT seems really short. Maybe that’s just because I like in Suffolk UK and the closest city to me is a 90 minute car ride🤷🏽♂️
I am going to be a bit controversial! In the UK we do not have some of your big chain restaurants, a times Square, statue of liberty etc. So will say visit them... But in moderation. My wife loves Madame Tussauds (I'm not the biggest fan) and my biggest regret was not going to MSG to see Billy Joel in concert. We did not cram in everything and enjoyed our 1st time stay. Fortunately we are back May 2022 and Billy is still there!

I made the mistake of shopping first. My mother and I took the Amtrak for a day trip. We shopped, but then had to carry our purchases with us the rest of the day. We should have set aside time to shop last before heading back to Penn Station.

Biggest mistake was a few of these, trying to cram too much into one weekend, I probably slept a total of 6 hours all weekend and was so exhausted I almost missed my flight home. Next mistake was going with 2 friends who were the PICKIEST eaters I’ve ever met, one doesn’t like ethnic food and the other didn’t eat gluten so The food experience was boring bc we had to make them happy. Thirdly I did not know about these Disney characters who expect tips, and when I gave Minnie Mouse a dollar she was NOT happy with that cheap tip.

I am from Texas and I went to 3 hockey games (Devils, Islanders and Ranger) and a lot more. Really when I travel I spend hours and days researching thing to do and see. Every town has free things and they are listed online and the time things are open. Buy my ticket ahead of time to major attractions and I buy hop on hop off rides. I also use Groupon to book and buy most tickets. The biggest scam was buying tickets to the Statue of Liberty, which I did not fall in to that trap. I am 60 and I have always been a planner planner, just one of the thing I have to do. Truly makes a vacation very easy going to know everything is in order and no surprises or missing what you really wanted to do. We went to Italy for a month and it took me about 6 months to plan it all, we did not miss anything we planed, even down time and a wedding.
I have 2!: First trip to NYC , I happily was taking pictures of the horse carriages in Central Park when a small old guy demanded I give him my SD card or pay him 20 bucks for the pictures! I realized he was keeping an eye on the carriages and he was no having me taking photos of them . I said no are you crazy and then he proceeded to "beat" me with a baton. I started to run and ran into a police car and the police started laughing their asses off! Later that week I was walking a pedestrian crossing near NYU, quiet street I was the only one around and I had the pedestrian green light. I saw a taxi approaching slowly and I thought he was going to stop for me but I guess he was looking at his phone and I ended up on his hood and he started yelling me in Arabic. Oh well , I still had an awesome time. Had a trip scheduled for this October if I can't go at that time hopefully will go next year. Greetings from Costa Rica!!!!

Good video. However sometimes getting tickets from concierge is the only way to get tickets to a popular show. Then there is the fact that often it is good to go on and pay for museum online tickets because there may be a loooong wait just to get a ticket there. IMO Best to plan ahead if there is some thing you really want to do. Everyone be well and safe.

At 8:00 I feel so bad for him just imagine yourself excited as shit to go to New York and when you get there not only do you have 1 to 2 days to be there but your experience gets ruined by Santa’s everywhere pissing, shitting, fighting and arguing everywhere... LMFAO like just imagine yourself in that situation😂😂 it’s like a clusterfuck of Santa’s outbreak lol

My biggest mistake the first time I came to NYC was heading straight to Times Square to take pictures...alone, mind you. So of course, the mascots around the area see that and, at first, two of them came over and asked if I wanted my picture taken, I go: "yeah, sure".....downhill from there. Eventually, more of them started coming over, and I had to stop it at some point, but then they started charging me for "tips".

We had very few mistakes thanks to watching all your videos before hand! The biggest mistake we made was taking a shuttle bus from Newark Liberty to our hotel in midtown Manhattan. It took 2 hours in traffic and was a scary ride. Next time, we will take the Path train.
Mine was staying in Hoboken New Jersey.
Really? I was considering staying there next time to explore Hoboken as well as Manhattan. Why was this a mistake? I must know! lol
@@KrystalKBeauty I had to take the hotel bus, the last trip back was 11pm. The taxi drivers wanted too much 30 dollars, maybe cheaper with Uber but this was before Uber was popular.
I booked hop on hop off with Expedia. First I had to walk to main office to redeem them. Which took about an hour. Then the buses travelled slower than it would take us to walk. They were also cold. But we paid for 3 days. Best way to travel in New York is bus or subway. Learn how to use it right away and see everything you want in short amount of time.

I live in North Jersey. It’s safe to say I’ve been to New York City so many times that I know how to get around a lot, or most of the city easily. I love eating on the Hudson River, it’s my favorite thing to do. (Moreover on the Jersey side tho.) However my friend tells me that they made contact with a stranger which gave a wider eyed stare back. Just don’t make eye contact if you don’t need too.
I once encountered a couple visiting that wanted to know how to get to I think something like 49st in the city and they are asking me directions of how to get there in Queens ( Steinway Street to be exact)
My biggest mistake was not realizing the difference between an express train and a local train. I learned this when the train didn't even slow down as it blasted through my intended stop.
