Here's a secret that made traversing NYC via train much easier - the subway travels in the direction of traffic! Say you want to go downtown from Times Square, turn towards the direction you want to go and get into the subway station on the right side of the road. Another one are the ferries. You can get very nice views of Manhattan by taking the ferry north from Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Tickets are just $4. Regarding OMNY, great system, shame they haven't rolled it out to the AirTrain or LIRR. I would love to see more cooperation between the different transport agencies. One app for the LIRR, another for the ferries, and only MetroCard for AirTrain is a bit too much. Worst of all LIRR app doesn't even work with foreign cards so you have to get the ticket from the machines.
Jon, you and your colleagues have these videos down to a science which is why they're so fun to watch: the maximum amount of information conveyed in a fun & concise way. I wish they were around back when I was visiting NYC, but if n' when I do get back I'm going to do a deep dive of research through your channel for my favorite recommendations you've made. Oh, and more importantly congratulations to you & your wife on becoming parents!
We met with someone from the Big Apple Greeters and had the BEST time, 10/10 would recommend. Our greeter was bilingual, too, which was great since my mom doesn't speak much English. They don't take tips, but they do accept donations to keep the program going, which is cool.

Having OMNY pay on just your contactless credit card 💳 is another option. That’s what I have and I love it. I prefer using my credit card to scan through the fare gates than holding a big phone that I constantly have to unlock.
Love the videos! Congrats on the little bundle of joy. I'm moving to NYC in the near future so I'm always watching to learn as much as I can about The Big 🍎
People need to know that unlimited MetroCards impose a wait time before they can be used again on the same transit system (ie subway, bus). It's something like 20 minutes. So you cannot swipe in a group of people within seconds of each other. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Congratulations on the BABY! Thanks for more COOL stuff in NYC! Might you author your own NYC travel book??? And LinkNYC is unbelievable and fantastic!
@@maestroh2986 I remember my childhood home’s number after 54 years. But because email and texting have become the more common methods of communicating, calling people is less common and made from contact lists not typing in a number.
Psst… Jon… for OMNY, just tap your phone like on other Apple Pay devices. No need to hold flat against OMNY screen. In fact, doesn’t even have to touch at all. So easy. Pass it on…

Museum of the Moving Image in Queens is free from 2-6pm on Thursdays. Great museum! On the same street, is Sacs, an upscale pizza place in the former commissary of Kaufman Astoria Studios. Also, my favorite, Napoli pizza. Same street. Small place but absolutely fantastic food at great prices
Great video Jon! Thanks for clarifying the downside to the OMNY, it's really designed more for locals, and it is not so great for tourists. I'd like to think NY will address that, but in my heart I think they probably know, and just don't care if it costs tourists more.
Not just in NYC, most popular tourist destinations stick it to visitors since we pose no voting block. In Hawaii, it's pervasive. They use tourist pricing and "Kama'aina" (local) pricing for many products and services.
Yes, like the Oyster card for London, tap-to-pay is not a good idea if your phone or tap card is connected to a foreign bank. The "foreign transaction fee" may be more than the fare depending on the agreement with the bank. So I have an Oyster card tied for auto top-up to my US bank account so that it tops up £40 at a time and I only pay the exchange fee for the top-up, not for each tap.
@@aptadpamuadmission fees are often needed to help keep a natural resource sustainable and not overrun with visitors (like Hanauma Bay for example). Those fees also will contribute to the maintenance of that place. Allowing a lower cost for residents makes sense since tourists typically make up most of those visitor counts anyway. And it’s like a goodwill gesture to residents. When I travel I don’t mind if local residents pay less than me for admission to a tourist attraction. I think that’s fair since I’m the one visiting but they live there.

Best Pizza here in da city is Bleeker St in west village. Joe's one in West Village, other location is Joe's on East 14th in East Village. Sauce on East 12 th st between 1st and 2nd ave. Village Square on Ave A across from Tompkins Sq park. For best Italian food you have to go Arthur Avenue in the Bronx. Best authentic Italian food in America not just NYC. Also the best and freshest Cannoli's . They fill them while you wait. Also the Staten Island Ferry is free and on Staten island side are The outlets. Across the street from Empire Outlets is Ruddy & Deans Steak house less expensive than the city
