A few years ago we were in mid town on holidays and went to buy a $60 sim. Went to a phone/electronic store that was advertising sims with Simple Mobile. They insisted that we use our credit card for payment and kept talking about overseas calls that we insisted that we would not need. When we got back to our hotel we realised that they had charged us $60 plus another $760. Went back straight away and they said they would refund the $760. They never did. We rang Simple Mobile and they knew nothing about the $760. We had to go through our bank to get the money back. We visit every year from Australia and from then on only buy sims from T Mobile.
We did see online lots of people complaining about this store and it astounded me that they where allowed to continue trading.

Wrong! Avoid talking to poorly dressed street people and any African American. Basically don't interact with anyone who approaches YOU first. If you need directions ask a cop, go into a business/store as the cashier or pick a nicely dressed person male or female that you approach first. Don't ask someone just standing around, find some going somewhere and stop them saying "Excuse me, can you help me with directions?" They will help you if they can, New Yorkers are helpful.

When we were in New York a few weeks ago, we ran into the Subway Swipe scam but it was slightly different. There was a guy standing next to the 2 metro card machines, and he had the credit card / metro card slots jammed up. The guy asked us if we had cash or a credit card, and then when I said cash, he begged for us to buy him a new metro card with a few bucks on it so that he could get on the train. Thing is, we already had cards, so we needed to fill ours. With the metro card slot jammed, we couldn't fill our card. A quick jump to surface and a block walk (This was the Jay Street and MetroTech station so plenty of stations close by), we went to another station and found the attendant booth and let her know that someone was pulling a scam at the other stop. She said "Big black guy, green coat?", Yup! She got on the radio and said something like "He's back, and this time he messed up both machines." We filled our metro card and got outta there.

This happened to me in NYC. Someone showed up at my apartment at 2am and tried to open the door with a key. I had a bat in my hand to clobber them, but when I looked through the peephole I saw it was two European-looking guys, speaking French. They'd paid someone on craigslist a pile of money to sublet MY apartment. The photos they had was definitely not my apartment (I have no hot tub). Being such a nice guy, I directed them to a hostel in Queens. They later contacted me and said the hostel cost 1/4 what they paid for the fake sublet AND was quite luxurious.

You didn't mention one more scam in NYC.... i.e., street portraitists... they tell you your portrait will cost, say, $5, but then, when it is ready, it turns out it is $15 because they added a frame or something without having asked you first... because of that scam once I was about to walk away leaving the guy with my portrait but he managed to stop me and kindly asked me to pay him the originally agreed price ;-)

Two variations on the "Good Samaritan Hustle" described at 4:48, both of which my wife and I encountered at Penn Station while getting ready to board trains --
First, if you're struggling with a bunch of bags and other luggage, someone may approach and offer to help you with them.
Second, if you look unsure where to go, someone may approach and ask where you're trying to get, then respond "follow me, I'll take you right to it." This, I assume, was a ruse to get us down into some lonely, isolated area for a robbery.
In both situations, we fended the people off by saying stuff like "thanks, but we're okay. We've got it. We don't need help but thank you," in a friendly but firm way. We had to repeat those messages just about non-stop while simultaneously moving toward our destination. But we got through both situations just fine.

Hi John been following your blogs, was in NYC last weekend. Got the subway downtown from 49th St. As I was trying to get my tickets guy behind me, saying he was in a rush, offered to help, will admit being a bit flustered. He said the ticket machine was not working. But it was...ended up giving him 60 dollars cash for a card with only 20 dollars on it..and was billed by my credit card too. So if anyone goes on subway find someone trying to rush you, walk away and come back a few minutes later..

To avoid Manhattan parking just park right outside the city and take the train in. Growing up we used to park under neath the BQE over pass where there’s always free parking and take the L train in and never had any problems

There's a delicatessen on a corner near a shake shack on Broadway that adds the 18% tip. I was like why is this so expensive, then saw that. And also had the additional tip line. Glad I figured it out without leaving even more tip. I hate tipping culture tbh, I always tip well but makes me not eat out often.

My friend and I went to Los Angeles (for universal studios but stopped at Santa Monica to see the ocean) while there a lady came up repeating “love and peace” and started putting bracelets on our hands. I didn’t want it but my friend where all “free gift”. Then she pulled out the note book asking for money. My friends didn’t know what to do. I gave her back the bracelet and apologize that we had no money and my friends quickly followed suite. It became a fun joke afterwards. So ya, monk scam, they don’t always dress as monks.
I’m a soft heart but my mom would teach me to say go by going to the mall and walking us pass people trying to give “free samples”. Many times it’s true. I don’t have money. Remember you worked hard for your money and it’s your choose to give it away. No one has the right to demand it from you.

@@michaelengelmann1877 also nice for sunset snapshots, has been working for me like a charm for the last 10+ years! And if you are a local and want to get to the 'next level' and you know someone who works at any of the Whole Foods Markets in Philly ask them for a parking sticker. It's a small sticker for employees that you put in the windshield from inside the car. It's one of those stickers that peel on off super easy indefinitely. This way you could also leave your car there overnight, which I might have done or not done for weeks at a time. This sticker would also allow you to park anywhere indefinitely at the other Whole Foods Markets in Philly and along the mainline.

Getting into JFK last time a lady hooked it up so I could get out of that crowded, confusing station. Had to get that exit card or whatever and couldn't get a weekly pass from the stations there, I think you still have to get a 1 ride out + the fee or something. Super confusing and I lived there. NYC has almost always been good to me.

I was in battery park last summer with my family after seeing the statue of liberty. we started to watch some street performers. they pulled me and some other spectators from the crowd to be part of the show. they had us all lined up and then started asking for donations or tips from us and the spectators. they got to me expecting I would pull money out and give it to them. I said my wife had already put some money in. they went to her and asked her if she had and how much she gave. they were very persistent that everybody gives them money. it was the closest I had come to a mugging while we were in NYC.

Yeah he absolutely right about the comedy tickets scam be very careful of that me and my wife got caught out there we bought some tickets for $20 we go to see this comedy show it was in the basement the room was really small it only held like about 10 people the most and they charged us $250 for both tickets and they told us it was an $80 drink minimum we had to buy beer when we didn't even drink alcohol altogether we spent close to $300 at this place And another thing they kept trying to force us to buy food from them the food was very expensive I looked at the prices they wanted $200 for steak $300 for a lobster meal it was crazy stay away from those places

I live about 7 hours away and driving was my cheapest/best option. We ended up parking at a long-term JFK parking that gave us a shuttle ride to the AirTrain to take public transport to midtown. It ended up being 70 dollars (USD) which was by far the best parking price. I was also curious if any of you have found better/cheaper/more reliable spots. Overall I rate the place I parked probably 8/10. Only bad parts was the time it took to get to midtown (about an hour and a half)

I met a monk near Times Square - he came and sat down beside me. After some religious talk he told me he was the senior monk in his temple, and if I gave him US$100 so the temple could help feed the street orphans, he could forgive all my sins. I thought it was a bargain and handed him the money, and he took all my details to ensure the correct soul was forgiven. My question is - "how can I check that my name is on the list of people who have had their sins revoked?"

anyone that stays in the Williamsburg/Bushwick section of Brooklyn near the (L subway line) and are going back to JFK, I cant explain enough how easy this is to do; take the Canarsie-bound L train to New Lots Av where you can connect for the B15 bus to JFK, as long as multiple people each have their own metrocards, simply use those same metrocards onboard the B15 bus as your free transfer from the subway because each individual fare when swiping each metrocard into the subway from where you started covers the whole trip; it includes a subway ride, and a free bus transfer just by using each metrocard on the bus (people who have unlimited rides on their metrocards can just swipe into the subway & use it onboard the bus automatically free of charge).
The pole sign for the B15 bus stop to JFK @ New Lots Av/Van Sinderen Av is just 10 feet to the left of the subway exit, the B15 will then drop-off right underneath the AirTrain @ Lefferts Blvd within JFK, the AirTrain at that location since its within JFK is also free of charge, just enter the station without needing a metrocard and walkup to the platform to wait for the AirTrain which will then go to all terminals, and there are TV's above the AirTrain platform doors @ Lefferts Blvd which shows the departing flights (*this excludes those flying with all airlines that depart out of terminal 5 only*). Those people who are going out of terminal 5 only are *NOT* required at all to use the AirTrain @ Lefferts Blvd; stay on the B15 bus and take it to the last stop within JFK which goes right to terminal 5!!!!

Hi John. I like your videos. The monk scam happens at Central Park. I was strolling one Veteran's Day admiring the foliage perhaps. This woman aggressively came up to me and gave something like about they were building a temple in East Asia. It was fake donations which she was most likely making money off. I unfortunately gave her $5.

Not listing the prices.... There is a guy comes around here in North Yorkshire UK every so often selling olives stuffed with a variety of fillings. He's REALLY keen to get you to try samples and they are delicious and if you ask for some he ALWAYS fills up large tubs of the stuff. Thing is - he doesn't list the prices and when he charges you the shock of how much he wants could probably kill an vunerable person.

We did go to one of those fake comedy shows. But at least we got in. Even though my friend was sure the tickets were fake. And the guy at the door totally played like they were until he laughed it off and let us in.
The show was not very good. But we didn't care. We laughed and moved on. It was okay to get hustled a little bit. We could afford it!
