    The Karate Kid Movie Description:
Daniel (Ralph Macchio) moves to Southern California with his mother, Lucille (Randee Heller), but quickly finds himself the target of a group of bullies who study karate at the Cobra Kai dojo. Fortunately, Daniel befriends Mr. Miyagi (Noriyuki "Pat" Morita), an unassuming repairman who just happens to be a martial arts master himself. Miyagi takes Daniel under his wing, training him in a more compassionate form of karate and preparing him to compete against the brutal Cobra Kai.
The Karate Kid is a 1984 American martial arts drama film written by Robert Mark Kamen and directed by John G. Avildsen. It is the first installment in the Karate Kid franchise, and stars Ralph Macchio, Pat Morita, Elisabeth Shue and William Zabka. The Karate Kid follows the story of Daniel LaRusso (Macchio), an Italian-American teenager from New Jersey who moves with his widowed mother to the Reseda neighborhood of Los Angeles. There, LaRusso encounters harassment from his new bullies, one of whom is Johnny Lawrence (Zabka), the ex-boyfriend of LaRusso's love interest, Ali Mills (Shue). As a result, LaRusso is taught karate by a handyman and war veteran named Mr. Miyagi (Morita) to help LaRusso defend himself and compete in a karate tournament against his bullies.
Kamen was approached by Columbia Pictures to compose a film similar to Avildsen's previous success Rocky (1976), after signing the director. Kamen drew inspiration from the real life events of an 8 year old Tum Pai student's story in Hawaii when writing the film. As a result, he maintained strong opinions regarding cast, and petitioned heavily for Morita's inclusion. Preparations for the film began immediately after the final edit of the script was complete, and casting took place between April and June 1983. Principal photography began on October 31, 1983, in Los Angeles, and completed by December 16. The film was Macchio's second major film role following The Outsiders (1983).
The Karate Kid was theatrically released in the United States on June 22, 1984. The film received mostly positive reviews from critics, many of whom praised the action sequences, writing, themes, performances, and music. The film was also a commercial success, grossing over $130 million worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing films of 1984 and Hollywood's biggest sleeper hit of the year. The film revitalized the acting career of Morita, who was previously known mostly for comedic roles, and earned him a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. The film subsequently launched a media franchise and is credited for popularizing karate in the United States.

Specifically, it's an honorific. Japan has tons of them. San is basically like saying mister, an average honorific. Then you have things like "kun" and "chan" which if I remember correctly are for younger males and females respectively. Then you have things like "sama", which are for those above you, but I can't remember the specifics of that one. Then you have stuff like senpai and sempai, which are for classmates. There are more than that, but it's very interesting. I love Japanese honorifics

With the soccer stuff, Elisabeth Shue was actually a really good soccer player who, in 1972, became the first girl to play on a boys team (she was 9 at the time) where she grew up in New Jersey. Her brother, Andrew -- who is also an actor -- actually briefly played in the MLS, too, so soccer is huge for that family. There's actually a movie loosely based on Elisabeth Shue's experiences playing soccer (which she produced and co-stars in) called "Gracie."

This movie had heart. I miss movies like that. Today's movies are spectacular, filled with action, CGI, loud music, etc, but lack heart and you just don't care about the characters. This movie, you really care about the characters.

    • @ScragsP22

You said it! I was born in ‘80 and grew up in the 80’s and 90’s. Going to the movies at that time was a whole experience. You’re so right, they don’t make movies with heart like they used to that could take you on an adventure, make you cry, make you cheer and engage your sense of wonder. It’s hard to feel so much as a twinge let alone feel much of anything for the characters or storylines in these modern day movies. They’re so void of anything that makes paying for a ticket worth it. Once in a blue moon they’ll put one out with a little something that reminds me of the feeling of the old greats. I think the last one I saw that was pretty good like that was Top Gun: Maverick.
I wish my kids could’ve been able to experience what going to the movies used to be but alas they were just born too late. I try to show them movies from my day but it’s not the same as seeing them back them on the big screen.

    • @omgbygollywow

@@ScragsP22 Today, just like in music today, the people making the movies are just pumping out product like an assembly line plant. Everything looks and feels generic, no originality. If you want a movie with heart made recently, watch Godzilla Minus One whenever you get a chance. You have to read subtitles, but you get so sucked into the story, and care about every character, that you forget that you're reading. • @billbill6094
    @billbill6094 3 місяці тому +14

Ralph Macchio fought to keep the Miyagi mourning scene in the movie since the producers didn't want a touch of seriousness about the Japanese internment camps or WW2 in their action movie, but he thought it was essential to show respect to the culture and explore the character to not sweep it under the rug. It also goes to show the similarities between the two war vet teachers, who went through the worst thing imaginable but came out two radically different people. Even their status in life reflects it, the man who won the Medal of Honor being tossed aside by US society likely because of his race while the other got successful selling violence.
Cobra Kai is definitely worth a watch if you finish the three originals, unlike what most people were expecting back in 2017 before it came out it wasn't just rehashed garbage, there is a lot to love and it's a good twist on the franchise. The Kung Fu Kid with Jackie Chan actually isn't bad, it's not as good as this obviously but if it wasn't named "Karate Kid" I don't think people would be so hesitant to see it. Besides, both that and the OG are in the same world, and they're actually going to crossover with both Ralph and Jackie reprising their roles.

Oh by the way: the actor who plays Dutch (the bleach-blonde bully in Cobra Kai) is Chad McQueen, the son of Hollywood legend Steve McQueen. Steve was good friends with Bruce Lee, and Bruce ended up teaching Chad martial arts. And the actor who plays Bobby (the "nice" Cobra Kai dude) was already a black belt when he filmed this, and is a sensei now. So they had some dudes with legit martial arts training on the side of Cobra Kai. The Asian competitor in the tournament is Darryl Vidal, who is another black belt and was the stand in for Pat Morita (Miyagi) in a couple scenes.

RIP always to Pat Morita(Mr. Miyagi)!!!
I grew up with this movie in the 80s. And I still love it to this day.
Fun Fact: Ralph Macchio(Daniel)got to keep the yellow car from this movie. And he still has it.
I do very highly recommend "Cobra Kai". But it's super important that you watch the two remaining sequels, "The Karate Kid Parts 2 & 3" first.
Looking forward to your next reaction. 😊

what I love the most about this movie is how well they developed the relationship between Daniel and Mr. Miyagi. for this reason, The Karate Kid is one of the most iconic love stories of all time. I highly recommend watching the other 3 Karate Kid movies and then moving on to Cobra Kai. as a huge fan of the original Karate Kid movies, Cobra Kai is such an amazing love letter to Karate Kid fans and I know that if you loved this movie, you'll love the series. RIP Pat Morita. ❤

The character of Mr. Miyagi was based on legendary Sensei Fumio Demura.
(出村 文男, Demura Fumio, September 15, 1938 - April 24, 2023) was a Japanese karateka and kobudoka, based in the United States since the mid-1960s.[2][3] A 9th dan in Shitō-ryū karate,[3] he was Pat Morita's martial arts stunt double in the first, third and fourth Karate Kid films, and was one of the inspirations for the character Mr. Miyagi.[4]

Pat Morita is just brilliant in this film, he was nominated for an Oscar and should have won, very rarely do academy awards go to people when they actually deserve it, but that’s a different conversation 😂
I put this in my Mount Rushmore of comfort films:
    Karate Kid
    Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure
    The Sandlot
    Back 2 the Future
    Honorable mentions to:
    Snatch
    Superbad

The late John G. Avidsen (Oscar-winner for Rocky, 1976)
directed the first 3 films of the franchise.
The Rocky saga's composer, Bill Conti also scored
    these films too.
Karate Kid was actually the name of an DC character from the Teen Titans.
So the rights to the name had to be acquired in order to use it as the movie's name.
I was 4 years old when this was released.
One of the greatest cinematic experiences i ever had.
Daniel's story hit home for so many of us kids, learning to be brave and
having the right guidance to do so.
This movie got me into classical karate to study
and later on other martial arts.
I knew of Pat Morita as an actor and comedian
    (Happy Days, Sanford & Son).
Morita's voice as Miyagi is the voice of his elders.
Such a great performance as Mr. Miyagi and him being
nominated for an Oscar was so cool.
William Zabka (Johnny) went on to become a Oscar nominee
as well for co-writing and producing a short film, Most (2003).
All these things, plus 'Wax on, Wax off'.
    Almost 40 years later.
    Gotta love it.
Also RIP to Martial Arts' legend Pat E. Johnson, playing one of the referees
and was one of the film's choreographers.

Just in case you don’t know, there are *5* Karate Kid movies. The first three are about Daniel, the 4th is called The Next Karate Kid and stars Hilary Swank from Million Dollar Baby and then the 5th movie is the reboot with Jaden Smith. I said “asterisk 5” because the Jaden Smith film takes place in China and he learns Kung Fu. There’s even a line in the film that says he’s learning Kung Fu, but they called it The Karate Kid to make money off brand-recognition.

And such a feel good, underdog story. I don’t remember them marketing this movie well, certainly not for girls. So, I didn’t see it in the theatre. We watched it in class the next year.
