First watch 3 then Cobra Kai, because the thematic elements in Season 3 are the same element as Karate Kid 3 and there is a character from Karate Kid 3 in Season 3 of Cobra Kai.
What I love about Miyagi and Daniels relationship is that they both help each other and this movie is a great example of what I mean Daniel helps him cope with his loss and miyagis wisdom has saved Daniel
I agree, one way that I always saw this series was that in both movies, the mentor student relationship was there, but also in the first movie, almost a father and son dynamic. In the second in some ways there was almost an older and younger brother dynamic. But that is just my opinion. Either way, that was one of the best parts of the series, which is why I was a little disappointed in the 3rd movie when they seemed to have not much more than a student teacher relationship.
Ali's actress wanted to go back to school and Daniels' mother wanted too much money, so they wrote them both out of the sequel. Actually worked pretty well.
the mom is not a big loss considering where they went she does not need to go and it would be a distraction and also if she was in the film it would be for like a 50 second scene literally..unless she went with them which would probably lead to her leaving the story of film anyways not showing her much cause shes out doing her own thing in japan so...yeah...ali is not necessary i guess but it is lame how they wrote her off
I love this Sequel... It doesn't have as many ACTION scenes as the first one or the third one, but this one has a more poignant feel to it, plus you get a little backstory with Miyagi
They scouted locations in okinawa but it was so modernized that they decided to build a set in hawaii instead. The tropical environment is the same anyway
Absolutely love the music when Myiagi enters the garden. The music during that fight is so epic. Myiagi is so badass, he doesn't even go into a fighting stance.
My favorite things about this one were getting far deeper into Miyagi's past and the fact that it took everything Daniel learned in the first movie and put it into a real-life conflict situation ("Danielsan, this not tournament. This for real')
Daniel: "You think can cut it down like that?" Miyagi: "Dont know...never been attacked by tree" I just freakin reealized the foreshadowing on that *facepalm*
Chozen's outfit at the end is similar to what Scorpion wears in Mortal Kombat. In fact, Ed Boon never noticed the similarity between the two until someone sent him a Tweet about it lol
My sensei was a marine stationed in Okinawa. That's where he learned karate. After that he studied kung fu, krav maga, wrestling, and other martial arts. I learned a roll one day in his class that saved my life a week later.
Love this movie so much!!!!! The scene where Daniel consoles Miyagi and talks about his own experience burying his father gets me every time. Chozen was such a dope villain. His intensity makes the character 5x better. I felt a tiny bit sorry for him near the end because you can see that his uncle’s former attitude shaped him and near the end he felt betrayed.
So, the drum technique is obviously a fictional martial arts technique, but it is basically a counter strike. It is supposed to dodge and counter a straight blow to the upper part of the body. This is why Chozen was unable to get a hit in at the end.
CHILD OF THE '80s HERE: There should be no question in your mind whether or not you want to watch "Cobra Kai," especially if you're planning to watch "Karate Kid III" as well. You absolutely DO want to watch "Cobra Kai." A few years ago, when "Cobra Kai" premiered on UA-cam, I bought a subscription to the then-version of UA-cam premium JUST to watch that show. I loved it so much that I must have watched the entire season five times that month. It was like being hit in the face with a sledge hammer made of nostalgia.
This movie is definitely my favorite out if the karate kid franchise. When I was younger I loved the scenery of Okinawa and how beautiful it was, plus the intensity and romance was way better. This was awesome, this movie and cobra Kai makes the franchise
The hand drum is called den den daiko. As others said, shot in Hawaii. A lot of the villagers were Hawaiian nisei and sansei Okinawan Americans, as Hawaii has a sizable population of Uchinaanchu.
You guys were asking what that move was at the end. Remember that scene where Miyagi shows Daniel the drum technique? Daniel asks Miyagi if there's a counter move to the technique, Miyagi tells him to consult the drum. Then for a brief second you see Daniel practice the drum move then he follows it with a punch, just then Miyagi tells him to consult the drum later. Well Daniel figured out the counter punch and that's why he won against Chozen. It's basically the second movies version of the crane kick.
Actually, the Okinawa setting was filmed in Hawaii, it'd also be the film debut of Tamlyn Tomita (Kumiko) and B.D. Wong - who was the person who invited Daniel and Kumiko to the 50s dance night
If you’ve seen the Jurassic Park series the actor who hands Daniel and Kumiko the dance flyer and says “Bring your friend” is a very young BD Wong who plays the scientist that grows the eggs in the first movie and deviously creates new dinosaurs in the 4th and later movies
This movie was filmed in Hawaii. I remember seeing the set from afar back in the late 1980’s. I was too busy with school and work at the time, and I regret not being able to visit the set and meeting Pat Morita and Ralph Macchio. Now I will never have the chance to meet Pat Morita.
great reaction! this movie brings out all the feels, especially when it comes to Daniel and Mr. Miyagi's relationship. also, I'll say this one more time for good measure: PLEASE don't skip The Next Karate Kid. it's canon and will give you much needed closure for Mr. Miyagi's character, something I know you guys would love since you like his character so much. now on to your reaction to KK3!
my answer for your question about how the nephew went on and in a sense became a villain is in part because of how he was allowed to grow up, he was able to cheat his people and lord over them because of his uncle, his actions were excused because of the fear of his uncle and if known by the uncle he might have learned he wasn't above honor, but because his being a bully, liar, and cheat were never checked, he didn't learn he wasn't above everyone, when his uncle disowned him for being what he always was, his fear and selfishness was shown and since he still had that belief that he was better than everyone, he acted the way he did. That is my take on it at least. lol
I haven't watched these movies since them came out and I had forgot how good and happy they make you feel, I also forgot how beautiful the 2 main ladies are. sorry can't spell their names
fun fact: the little girl who was saved by Daniel in the bell tower grew up and later won the title of 'Miss Hawaii'... that being said, I had such a big crush on Tamlyn Tomita's character when I first saw this movie growing up in Hawaii...
I hope y’all watch THE NEXT KARATE KID as well. Mr. Myagi with Hillary Swank! And Michael Ironside is always a formidable antagonist! Fun watch to cap off the series before Cobra Kai.
Hi. 1. Ali and car/break up gets explained in CK S3. 2. Movie filmed in Hawaii but series they actually went to Okinawa. 3. Of course you gotta watch Cobra Kai! P. s. Maybe consider watching the 4th movie that no one talks about.
I noticed you were having a debate at the end about whose fault Chozen's behavior was, given that in the previous movie, Mr. Miyagi espoused that there's no such thing as a bad student, only a bad teacher. What you have to remember is that Mr. Miyagi also added, "teacher say, student do." Chozen did NOT do what Sato told him to do. Ergo, the comment is true ONLY if the student does everything that the teacher tells the student to do. Otherwise, the fault is on the student.
Here Daniel helps Miyagi emotionally, like Miyagi helped Daniel physically in the first movie. Many people don't like this one, for some reason, I love it mostly because of the culture atmosphere change, and the role reversal.
Loved the reaction guys awesome job with the editing..just wanted to mention at 11:59 that the base you see in Okinawa was built AFTER WW2 ended and it became a permanent military base there forced on the Japanese as part of the surrender terms. This base is actually still active today and local Okinawans continue to pressure their government to have it removed but his hands are tied. Look it up. Shame on us
Danny Kamekona (the actor who portrayed Sato) was a childhood friend of my father. he was a very intimidating figure, but I knew him as a very nice man...
I feel this movie is better in some ways than the original. While the first film was Daniel's movie, this was Mr. Miyagi's. You should def do Cobra Kai! The third season explores this history more and does so in a really cool way.
You should definitely react to KK2, KK3, KK4 (completes Mr Miyagi’s story), and all Cobra Kai! KK3 is not as well done as the others, but many people like it’s “over-the-too” villain! It’s many people’s favorite KK character actually. That villain is like Palpatine, where as Kreese is Vader. KK4 is with Hiliary Swank, Mr Miyagi’s only other student! She may make an appearance in Cobra Kai season 4 or 5 👍
Part 2 is up there with the first one. Part 3 just took Daniel's character backward. How are you going to be afraid of Mike Barnes after fighting Chozen in a life or death battle? Mike Barnes would just be another walk in the park IMO.
Yeah the final shot didn't have a good angle. The Drum Technique there is essentially Daniel parrying and attacking with an open hand strike at the same time. Actually this movie is a bit more realistic in terms of what you should do in a fight. As Mr. Miyagi says "Best block, don't be there" aka, move out of the way. People think because of movies, blocking is the all and all of fighting. Your arms aren't made of iron. Blocking hurts, you can break bones. You're trying to act against an oncoming strong force. Parrying on the other hand you're working with the force coming towards you. With moving out of the way, well that's obvious, you don't get hit at all.
What many people dont notice, if they ever do, is that Obone (Sp?) Dance moves are actually karate moves used in a dance way. Also there have been women warriors though out Japanese history, even at least one Samurai. So Kumiko, trying to strangle Chosen with her scarf isnt really unheard of, as he had just had a knife to her throat. Chosen's stature was garbage anyway so why not punch her in the face (not condoning it personally). Glad you enjoyed the movie. Please number 3 before you start on the Cobra Kai series as they have direct bearing on that series. Im glad you enjoyed it. This series of movies, my love of martial arts, anime put a desire for me to go to Japan. I did and lived there for almost 4 years while in the military. I still have love for that country, people and culture. My wife of almost 14 years is Japanese.
The system of honor from ancient Japan is very different from a western concept of honor. The samurai would set a farmer on fire if the village wasn't supplying thier quota of rice to motivate the others. That was considered honorable. To perform your duty no matter what.
What was that move exactly? Yeah, another smart comment I definitely echo. I didn't really like the way they hid it. Really like you guys. You're definitely oddballs, as reactors go. You watch, absorb, and enjoy the movie. No smart-a** remarks, no second-guessing the director, no joking through the whole movie (one guy does this and tells anyone who doesn't like it to take a hike). You guys reaffirm my hope for people. I know you think I'm exaggerating, but go watch some other reactors sometime. I can't wait to watch III. So glad you decided to because there's a big payoff for Mr. Miyagi.
I didn't care for this sequel for one reason only - Chozen; his character is an irredeemable lunatic who wants to fight a duel to the death with another teenager over offenses to "honor." Where are the authorities to put a stop to such a thing? Is Okinawa a medieval kingdom to indulge such things? Someone should have summoned the Okinawa police to come and throw a net over Chozen and his uncle, for expressing such sentiments. Sato sees the error of his ways before the end, but Chozen is a menace to society - even that backwater society. I've seen clips of the new show, which seek to soften the Chozen character, but in this movie, he is ridiculous. Johnny Lawrence was a bully, but he didn't want to actually kill Daniel or anybody else.
Wow! Seven months later, and not one person agrees with me? Nobody else finds the premise of this film to be ridiculous? Honor duels to the death - in the 20th century? And between underage teenagers, no less? There should be a travel ban for all American citizens to go to such a backwards country. Even when I was 15 years old, when this movie came out, I felt pure revulsion for the Chozen character. His character is so evil, that I am reminded of school shooters; who share the same personality traits with Chozen.
Daniel's attempt at a crane kick was ineffective against Chozen since he's also a student in Miyagi Do and a more advanced student then Daniel is. Chozen probably learned the crane kick when he was a kid.
Hello, I'm a new subscriber, like these reactions! You should watch everything in canon, The first 4 movies & the Netflix show. Karate Kid (You Already Watched) Karate Kid 2 (You Already Watched) Karate Kid 3 (Has Flaws, But Not As Bad As Everyone Claims. Also Has One Of The Best Villains Ever) The Next Karate Kid (Has Flaws, But Not As Bad As Everyone Claims) Cobra Kai (One Of If Not My Favorite Show Of All Time)

Ralph Macchio is a great Dancer he got 4th place on Dancing with the stars.
A lot of people don't realize that he was on Broadway for a while, so being able to dance makes sense.
He is great in The Outsiders

Back then it was more common to have them speak english and I don't think they had confidence viewers would watch otherwise
