- Today we are going to open up one of the new Lord of the Rings Special Edition collector boxes!
While I must admit that I was a little hesitant going back to a Lord of the Rings collector product that has essentially the same card pool as the set released earlier this year, I must also admit that opening this product was definitely more fun than I originally imagined. There are a few things I can and will be critical about this product over, but lack of cool card frames and treatments won't be among them...

I'll say this for the Surge foil lands - they look stunning on the camera in the little pile at the bottom!
They do! In general, the Surge foils do look really good. I don’t know how they hold up from a curling standpoint but they look fantastic.
The box was great, the piles that were made were nightmares for my OCD

IMHO, the only thing I like about this product is the subset of Hildebrandt Bros. cards. They look fantastic, and I didn't even know the subset was in the product until I deep dove into researching it.
Yeah they are sweet but the product is under-marketed in general, people don’t even realize the serials that are in here.
There are a lot of interesting aspects to these special edition boxes. I think there might end up being some nice “but low” opportunities.
The art and card frames are so much better in this release and the poster art cards look incredible imo, though they are hard to read so you probably want a regular version on the side if you are going to play with them.
I really like the showcase scroll treatment and wish that had been there all along. The Poster art is also fantastic though we agree that it’s a little challenging to read.
Love the play mat. Looks 3D. Keep wanting you to straighten up that box! 😂
It looks so realistic that it’s really deceptive. Absolutely beautiful mat. Prof nailed it with the design.
the time you needed to study the Saruman card to realize which one it actually is, is a perfect showcase how unsuitable for actual play these cards are
The Arwen the immortal poster card is a mess to read. The Sauron is actually pretty awesome. But they are a little all over the map too.

I liked that you hit both Sauron and Mt. Doom in the poster art! Im kinda jelly on the Arwen poster art and super jelly on the Mithril Coat surge foil.

The surge foil stuff looks really good. As someone who also purchased the SL with poster art, I’m a pretty big fan of the style. I was pretty happy with the Sauron and Mt Doom pulls. The Mithril Coat was also a nice hit.

Really a good box. I just opened one this morning. Only 2 posters 1 foil 1 non foil. No surge realm cards. Below average for sure but I love this product. This should have been the initial release for sure.
Yeah, even without a One Ring, Bowmaster, or Serial numbered card the box felt plenty strong. I am really bummed with didn’t get the showcase scroll treatment the first time around because it’s fantastic.

Also, the poster art, while stylistically cool imo, seems a little full of itself, tbh. Imagine a musician covering a song that was only released a month ago. I think this kind of style really works for staples that you've been playing with for years. 🤷♂️
I honestly hadn’t thought of the Alliance as green Meathook but that’s a great call! It’s definitely a little more of a build around card then just jam in any deck but it’s got some uses.
I dig the poster art cards (even if they aren’t the easiest cards to incorporate into game play due to the rules text being all over the place) but, admittedly, it feels super out of place for LoTR. Nothing screams psychedelic rock poster like Lord of the Rings…
@@WildcatMTG It's not as good, for sure, but it has the same name cadence like we see in most mtg card cycles. 🤷♂️ We also saw red get it's version here as well in Spiteful Banditry.
The biggest similarity, as I see it, is that a lot of folks who were raised on LOTR were boomers who grew up on the tail end of the Woodstock era.

The individual packs at the store are around $40 a piece. Id rather pick this up for that price than the price they gave us for one pack of Commander Masters.
Interesting. I like Commander Masters and but am happy to see that come way down.
@WildcatMTG Yeah, I do too, but not when a pack of cards almost cost $90. Lol
Love the Sauron card. I run that as a commander. Will look to get that version when ai can! 🤪
It 100% became the commander of a deck I was already using. Currently in the process of tweaking the deck a little more toward Sauron’s skill set.
The price in EU for these is insane, 400 dollars. I bought one anyway because im stupid. Hopning for really good pulls :D

Ooening LOTR at pre-release had everyone looking at me with evil glares. Why? My prerelease card was Orcish. Then I opened The One Ring and a foil Lorian. Hate deserved. 😅
Yeah… Bowmaster is such a beastly card. I had the displeasure of playing against it in limited a couple of times and it just does so much work.
@@WildcatMTG On the note... Lily is the dumbest MTG card ever printed imho. Also did end up getting one of my nephews into MTG with the LOTR starter box. The one with two premade decks. Apparently, "he loves it."

The showcase scroll frame is really cool. I really wish that treatment was available the first release as well. I read the Hobbit but never actually read the LoTR books and have only watched the movies (albeit several times each). So coming from the perspective of the movies I always gravitated toward Sam and Aragorn.
It was a little cheesy of Wizard to reprint the Surge Foils but maybe they were not Shinny enough like Pokemons can be. 😁 These SE boxes are not cheap and think prices will drop later because its prop a big print run on these and people that put alot of money on the regular version will not pay more. Bought one pack and like the old Hildebrand Brothers Art more. Has there come out any Single prices on these?
I really dislike the decision to make the surge foil relics and realms cards so much easier to pull when they were a driving force in the value of the first collector boxes. Stuff like that builds mistrust. The SE LoTR collector boxes may be a really good buy low opportunity soon. With Lost Caverns of Ixalan right around the corner and looking to be a really strong set, I imagine much focus will quickly turn that direction. Singles prices on this product are in a huge flux because the product just released on 11/3. Could be some opportunity there soon too.
Ah one of the fun parts of getting old. Go from never getting sick, to getting sick at *least* once a year. 🤒
I kinda feel like with only the Collector boxes being released this time, they seem aimed only at hard core LotR fans or high roller Magic players. I'm not sure I love the idea of a second release, but on the positive side, they have new art, new serials, and Surge foils, so those who have the money to go hunting can do so, and everyone else can just continue to play with the cards they already have.
I also realized that I hadn’t talked for 20+ minutes consecutively since before getting sick so half way through the video my throat got scratchy which caused me to cough… rookie move not having water handy. 🙄 WoTC is going to get some re-tread out of the second release which great for them. There is definitely some value in these boxes. I feel bad that hung in to their surge foils from the first release. Those are going to nose dive now.
@@WildcatMTG It was only the Realms and Relics from the first release that had Surge Foils, right? If so I totally agree putting them in this release and having them be much more common was a bad call. It just screws over the LGS and the player who held on to them, or paid big bucks for them. Wizards just can't let things rest sometimes.
Yeah, the Surge Foil Realms and Relics were only available as box toppers in collector boxes and were approximately 1:6 boxes. Whereas I pulled two of them in my one Special Edition collector box. If I was someone that pulled or acquired them and hung on to them from the first release I would be furious.
For me the lord of the rings is the best set so far this year overall. I'm not saying the others aren't good just I feel like despite the financial fluctuations with the set. As far as game play this set had a balance from all types of cards and not limited to 2-3 types of deck build and a reasonable land base not as good as Dr Who but at least enough non basic lands to etb untapped and with good abilities which was the total opposite with Eldraine for example where the land base was disappointing in quality despite the fantastic art work across the set. That's probably just me but I genuinely felt like the lord of the rings set gives you more options many of which are powerful in game.
Lord of the Rings was pretty fun to draft. There were a few viable archetypes and enough good things that you didn’t have to nail the archetype to have a good deck. Eldraine was a very aggressive limited format.
@@WildcatMTG totally agree. Lord of the rings really would be such a good draft. I wish I'd attended the prerelease in my LGS I did the eldraine one and just felt like it was ok just not great. But I do love the otters and gingerbread golums
I knew this set would be a bigger deal for me than the first LOTR release
I am torn… I got a lot of what I needed from the initial release (bowmasters, one ring, delighted halflings, etc.) but I really like the treatments in this product.

1st LOTR was a pass for me. This one is too. The Secret lair art cards are awful. I really don't like cards I can't read.
The poster art looks incredible but I agree that they are not the most functional cards to play with.
I may be in the the minority but I do not think those surge foils look good. I am new to Magic and while I think the card game is superior to other games I have played the foiling just seems so far below the quality of other TCGs.
I like the surge foils but I’m curious about how they hold up curling wise. I assume they curl because almost MTG foils do but I have not spent enough time with them to know for sure. I really wish foils didn’t feel like a huge liability in MTG.
