As someone who just wants cool art cards for collecting, I’m excited that most of them are going to resell under 10 cents each. And the really cool ones are even under $1
Thats the beauty of these new bling bling packs. Back in the day, if i wanted my commander in foil, i had to pay up. Nowadays i can get any legendary with cool art for literal cents.

I feel like I'm watching the Professor unravel at the capitalism being pumped into a fantasy card game he adores and each video it seems like he has less of an idea about what to even say.
In the first 30 seconds of this video, i saw on the profs desk 12,500$ "worth" of magic products. I bet the return of that is less than 2000$. This is the state of gambling wizards has conditioned us into.

@@BreakTheCode115 Do you really think someone would only open $200 worth of cards amongst 25 boxes? That means on average they would only open $8 worth of value from a single $500 box. If that were actually the value you received from a box, no one would ever buy MtG cards. WotC gouges us enough that there's really no need for people being overly hyperbolic about it.
I don't really play Magic, but I really like the Professor's videos. He combines his love of the game as well as a professional eye towards the game that is refreshing over other creators who seem to only be able to bank on negative news. And even when "negative", the Professor usually has well thought out fixes/suggestions. As someone who has worked in TTG industry, it is nice to see someone who understands a lot of how products are made.
Seeing the price on the first pack really helps put things into perspective, unless you're hitting a lottery card, you need a good box topper mythic in pretty much every pack to have a box be worth it, which just isn't gonna happen
Here in Brazil, we have a collector booster for almost R$300 and a collector booster box for R$3.500. Just to give an idea the minimum wage in this country is R$1.320 (a good part of the population receives this value per month) so some people need to work for almost 3 MONTHS to buy a single box.
Meanwhile, Yugioh! is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a MASSIVE all-foil reprint that is nothing but staples in 3 different base rarities for all 79 cards in the set (super, ultra, and secret rare) with ultra and secret rares having special rarities (collector's and platinum secret rares, ultimate ultra rares), so the basic cards are going to be mega cheap in super rare while letting the nerds have our super shiny foils! The biggest win Konami has ever done. It seems like WOTC dropping Ls all over the place.
Don't be fooled. Yugioh has been a dumpster fire of greed for decades. No one should bat an eye if they do a nice deed once. Also, atleast magic is recognizable. Yugioh has power crept itself into looking like a different game entirely. It's a joke.

The nice part about this set is that, while the boxes are all overpriced by a mile, so many people are chasing the one ring that singles will be bottomed out eventually. I imagine the boxes will go from $500/box to nothing the moment the one ring is confirmed to have been found.
That was my initial thought as well, but it's wrong. Bundles and Collector Booster boxes aren't printed to demand, so the amount of product opened by the ring chasers isn't going to go up.

One can only hope the people who got them weren't regular box openers and new players. A box like this can really get a collection going. Amazing Sir. Well done. **doffs cap**
The announcement of this set got my partner obsessed with MTG. She's a huge LOTR fan and wanted to learn to play before Prerelease. After years or zero interest, she's now deeply in love with pauper, commander, and limited. This set brought us closer together. The game has taught us so many new things about each other. For being so calm and peaceful, I would have never guessed her to embrace chaos and agro decks! So to celebrate how special to set is to us, we built a 6-3-1 set cube! I found bulk core booster boxes (without mythic and rates) for 20 bucks each on eBay. A couple of those, two fresh collector booster boxes (did not spend even close to 500 on them), and we were 95% there. Thanks to the hype, and everyone ripping through these boxes, I was able to build this set cube on the cheap! We'll be spending the long holiday weekend playing 2 person draft formats! Despite all of the hype... this set is perfect!
@@ArcanoSilverwindThe gap between a good burn player and a _really_ good burn player is small but extremely deep. The first 95% is easy, but the last 5% takes a lot of skill and practice.
I dabbled in Magic years ago and ended up falling out of it but seeing all the hype of this set lately has brought me back in. I’m not going card chasing, but think the LoTR collab is nice so wanted to figure out what I should buy vs steer clear of. Stumbled on your channel and instantly subscribed, lots of great info for me being less than clueless coming back into MTG. Looking forward to the Whatnot live!
Just want to say, I sincerely love you griping about UB whenever you can. The attitude that it's lame to care is way too prevalent and it's refreshing to see somebody who's not just toxically positive about it.
The professor is a hero. Not only does he create content to make MTG even more accessible to everyone, but he's charitable and uncaring about turning a profit. This is why he is the only MTG channel I follow.
You’re a gentleman and a scholar sir, the Magic community can only be better with your videos and have gotten me through some rough times so thanks! It’s sad that magic has become a stockholder money grab instead of love for the game.
You know, one of the reasons MTG attracted me in the first place, was the beautiful art on the cards. It's nice to see someone talking about how beautiful these are. They're all beautiful little paintings we use to play our game. Very cool when you stop to think about it.
I agree, I love the art. I got back into mtg because of Kamigawa set art and love just looking at the great work the artists have done. I wonder how they feel about the resell value or whatever being more important than their work?
@lorettamorandin yes, I collected multiple copies of all the Kamigawa lands! They look so nice. If I had to guess, I think the artists probably are just happy to get a commission. 🙂
It's a shame Magic players don't respect the objects of their own hobby enough not to encourage fake cards. They are cool little pieces of art if your community isn't a toxic bunch of babies.
I have to say Professor, while watching you price the cards individually was hilarious..."six dollars and sixty nine cents" as the graphic showed .99 cents. Your overall assessment of the value of the cards you opened was nearly spot on. Very impressive!!!
Been binging your vids lately. Just watched your MH3 Collector Box video and was incredibly moved by your candid discussion of depression and therapy. And then coming to find out you support trans charities? I can now say I’m a big fan ❤️
honestly I do enjoy this time of "booster box game" where we get Prof just opening and discussing the contents of the packs and I hope we get more of it!
I really love that you took your time with this one. Its more like we are opening the packs with you and can take a proper look at the cards. And nice tie ;)
Most of the singles are actually VERY favorable to those on a budget. I already got most of the cards I wanted. The only real ripoff are the collector's boosters.
They don’t want their regular customers. They want to get inclusiveness points and make a killing from the set so they can prop it up as the reason it did well.
Here I am. Sitting in the dead of night, excited that I was going to watch people get some free products, maybe get something myself(?), and watch Prof live... but alas. App not working, website not working. Good job WhatNot!
As somebody who doesn't play magic or understand it that much, this kind of slower paced opening discussing some of the cards and circumstances around them are pretty fascinating
I actually really like the showcase (ring frame) art styles. I understand his point, but I personally love how the showcases for the past year or so have been really artistically stylized. They are great art pieces. Shout out Dom Mayer!
Your avid support for trans and gay communities as well as your honesty about WOTC is one of the reasons this will always my favorite Magic YT Channel. Love you Prof
Probably because if he does the alphabet mafia will go after him. So because he's very afraid of them he has to give them money. I'm sure he used to donate to BLM too, you know, before it was revealed to be a scam organization who stole millions to buy houses, drugs, jewelry and hookers.
Every morning, on my way to work, I stop by a cozy little corner store in town for a can of soda (a man's gotta have his morning caffeine and I sure as hell am not settling for coffee). Each and every time that I visit, there's one or more members of a group of about 7 homeless men meandering about the store. You see, there's a homeless shelter on the same block as this corner store, and after a long day of asking for handouts, these men all engage in the exact same hobby - playing scratch-off cards. Which cards they play of course depends on how well they did at getting stranger's donations the day before, but as they stand there, scratching away at their cards at the counter (I always dread this part because it makes the line that much longer), the end result of their gambling addiction is almost always the same - no prize, no winnings, no big payout. For me, watching this video really puts me back in the checkout line, looking on as some hopeless guy blows what little cash he's got on the chance, the _possibility_ of a big payout, whether that be the One Ring or the big lottery prize. More than any other product Wizards has ever produced, the Lord of the Rings set is, without a doubt, most obviously a gamble - you win the big shiny prize, or you get bent. Sobering stuff, to see this game become so predatory.
what a terrible sponsor and a waste of time. Why not have your charity help animals or starving people in other countries? I appreciate what you're trying to do by donating to charity's but what an absolute waste of money.
I love the proff he is so down to earth and is always seeing products from the eyes of an average MTG player allowing him to give sound and useful insights ❤

Aggro requires a very analytic mindset, ESPECIALLY burn
@@malakimphoros2164is this sarcasm
I love this casual style, and the blind pricing adds a layer of GLORIOUS irony!
Just want to say, I sincerely love you griping about UB whenever you can. The attitude that it's lame to care is way too prevalent and it's refreshing to see somebody who's not just toxically positive about it.
I want a UA-cam channel where The Prof just cracks packs and guesses prices. I need more videos like this!!!
and you get the experience of opening packs in a casual way without buying them and realising how not worth the money they are and keep your cash!
The professor is a hero. Not only does he create content to make MTG even more accessible to everyone, but he's charitable and uncaring about turning a profit. This is why he is the only MTG channel I follow.
He's also real and honest about the products and what you should spend your money on. Long live the prof!
You’re a gentleman and a scholar sir, the Magic community can only be better with your videos and have gotten me through some rough times so thanks! It’s sad that magic has become a stockholder money grab instead of love for the game.
Watching this again and seeing 42 dollar packs pull only 2 dollars is very upsetting and this release was what got me into magic
I love how he was on the money until Minas Tirith
I can't imagine what a home run box of this looks like without a serialized card.
Probably a Foil The One Ring regular art and A Foil Orcish Bowmaster?
@@timothymimeslayeryeah that would be about 215 for the pair.
@@shanealvarado7191 Closer to 152
Honestly don't think its actually possible.
@@malakimphoros2164 ahh so you get the point
I have to say Professor, while watching you price the cards individually was hilarious..."six dollars and sixty nine cents" as the graphic showed .99 cents. Your overall assessment of the value of the cards you opened was nearly spot on. Very impressive!!!
You should do this every now and again for new sets. The commentary and edits were great!
Prof, you got me into magic at 42 years old, I love your energy, your channel, and your guests. Thank you for existing.
Prof guessing card values has the same energy as the quote "How much could a carton of eggs cost, ten dollars?" 😂😂😂🥚🥚🥚
Been binging your vids lately. Just watched your MH3 Collector Box video and was incredibly moved by your candid discussion of depression and therapy. And then coming to find out you support trans charities? I can now say I’m a big fan ❤️
That was very impressive. He almost got the total box worth dead on!
honestly I do enjoy this time of "booster box game" where we get Prof just opening and discussing the contents of the packs and I hope we get more of it!
I really love that you took your time with this one. Its more like we are opening the packs with you and can take a proper look at the cards. And nice tie ;)
Brings me sooooo much joy finally seeing a streamer trying to help the mtg and LOTR community instead of just jumping in on the hype. Thank you! ❤
I Kinda loved how he guessed every card completly wrong, but his end estimate was rather accurate :D
@the prof, did you crash Whatnot with your give away stream?
15:21 I think there's an error with Aragorn 😂
I was so excited for this set. It's such a shame how now it's not friendly for regular consumers.
100% agree with you!
Most of the singles are actually VERY favorable to those on a budget. I already got most of the cards I wanted. The only real ripoff are the collector's boosters.
They don’t want their regular customers. They want to get inclusiveness points and make a killing from the set so they can prop it up as the reason it did well.
What? This set is one of the cheapest of all time. The ring-gimmick dropped prices into the ground, theres like, 2 cards in the set above 20 bucks.
Here I am. Sitting in the dead of night, excited that I was going to watch people get some free products, maybe get something myself(?), and watch Prof live... but alas. App not working, website not working. Good job WhatNot!
“Paths of the deads” your third card! Lucky youuuuu Prof!!!! I bought 3 and looking for that and did Not find it!!! 😭😭😭😭
As a LOTR fan, I love this set. I just wish they wouldn’t have made shiny cardboard so expensive 🥲
As a LotR fan, I hate this set, and wish they did better by the books.
As somebody who doesn't play magic or understand it that much, this kind of slower paced opening discussing some of the cards and circumstances around them are pretty fascinating
Oh please let this be the once in a decade time I get lucky!!!! Alarm set!
I prefer these chill videos of listening to you ramble while you open stuff. They are nice.
Prof I think you crashed the WhatNot site. I’m trying to check out the stream and the site is being very unresponsive
Same
I actually really like the showcase (ring frame) art styles. I understand his point, but I personally love how the showcases for the past year or so have been really artistically stylized. They are great art pieces. Shout out Dom Mayer!
I still have no idea what cards come in what product lol
I don't even know what products there are lmao
the way you did this video is absolutely perfect - thank you so much! :)
Your avid support for trans and gay communities as well as your honesty about WOTC is one of the reasons this will always my favorite Magic YT Channel. Love you Prof
Love this format, so relaxed and really enjoy the commentary on the art
Why can't you give to an actual charity like children's cancer society?
Yeah seriously 😅
Of all the charities, trans lifeline. Really?
I really like this style of pack openings. A little commentary keeps me watching instead of just skipping through the video
what a terrible sponsor and a waste of time. Why not have your charity help animals or starving people in other countries? I appreciate what you're trying to do by donating to charity's but what an absolute waste of money.
WIth current prices this box is valued 352 bucks, better than the previous count but still worse than the selling price.
I love the proff he is so down to earth and is always seeing products from the eyes of an average MTG player allowing him to give sound and useful insights ❤
Thanks Prof. Once again you remind us all that we should buy singles and not overpriced sealed product.
12 packs of cards in a $500 box is a wrought. Magic is a scam, not a game. It used to be amazing, this is beyond ridiculous and anyone taking part is losing. This is a casino.
I think I like this format even more than the normal booster box game, please do it again some time :)
This is my first comment on any pack opening video. The style of this kept me watching the entire time, not skipping anything. Do more of these imo. Great job Professor keep it up!
I love hearing you talk more than just music, you're hilarious. I hope all future box openings are like this!
