For those that may not know. (Eg, those unfamiliar with how to drive a manual transmission) Here's why cars rolling back is a cool detail: It's actually pretty cool Cars in old America (And modern rest of the world) were manual transmission, they had 3 pedals, accelerator, brake, clutch. To start moving from a standstill, you press in the clutch, move the stick into 1st gear, and start accelerating as you reduce the clutch. You will feel the car "lift" up, at that point, you will begin moving and can fully release the clutch. If you release the clutch before then, unless you're flooring it, you'll stall. You may know that, most people have only 2 legs, meaning that to use the accelerator and clutch at the same time, you must release the brake. On a hill, this will make the car roll. Of course, this was driver preference, the handbrake will stop you from rolling, and you just release it with your hand once the car is ready to move. Higher end modern cars come with electronic handbrakes specifically to stop rolling on hills, they apply and remove the handbrake for you. So anyway the reason why it's a cool detail is that it acknowledges that Automatic cars didn't exist back then, so they've all got manual behaviour. GTA 4 and 5 do it too, but it's a little bit weirder considering that by 2008/2013, Americans were mostly in automatics.
The fact that you have to explain it, is quite terrifying... I know, automatic driving will (unfortunately) come but these are the basics. I appreciate you are spreading very detailed knowledge but I have to share experience with you, even modern manual handbrakes have auto hold/assisted hill start (2016 made for Europian market). Still, big up for you man
@@samuelkycina3745 Ohhh I didn't know they became mandatory, my car is a 2014. I thought it was just a luxury thing because my dads bmw has one and that's all i've seen one in :P I wouldn't worry about cars becoming easier to drive. It means the people that struggle now will have an easier time driving because they have less to worry about, letting them focus on the road better
Yeah, it's a nice detail. But automatic transmission existed back then, at least in the US - if I'm not mistaken. They just weren't in every vehicle, while being a feature in a lot of cars from north american fleet. Taking that aside, your information is correct!
@@duck74UK nah! Automatic transmissions were being researched in the 1920's. On the 1930's, there were cars on the streets with planetary transmission (which is sort of an auto trans) and a couple of cars had real auto trans, but they weren't mass produced (the transmissions). Only in 1939, Oldsmobile started mass producing the Hydramatic transmission (that got implemented in Olds and Cadillacs), but there were other manufacturers that had auto trans, theirs were only not that good as the Hydramatic.

Don't forget about the tyre deformation seen throughout the series since Mafia II. I've always loved how going over a bump would cause the tyres to momentarily flatten before inflating back to the usual round state.
Detail in the details: The photographers at 1:05 and 1:16 were presumably animated by different game designers. The second one holds the camera wrong. Both are using a TLR-Camera where the Viewfinder is on top, so you have to hold the camera before your stomach and peep downward onto the focusing screen. The first one taking a snapshot of his girl does it right. The second holds the camera to his eys but TLRs don't have an eyelevel viewfinder.

Also, of you leave a parked car while holding the steering at any side, it will stay like that until you next start the engine.
