I don't blame Schumacher. He really wanted the movies to be as dark as the Burton ones, but apparently Warner Bros was the one that forced him to make the movie so goofy and cheesy. I honestly think Batman Triumphant could have been a major improvement.
In regards to Batman: The Animated Series having heavy shit for a kids show, that was the intention. Bruce Timm wanted the show to look and feel like a proper adaptation of the comics and not a typical 'Saturday Morning Cartoon'.
The reason why parental group where upset at Batman Returns (1992) is because Warner Brothers hired McDonald’s to put Batman toys in Happy Meals. In other words, parents thought it was for kids
I think that everyone who worked on Batman and Robin ended up feeling some form of remorse for doing it because of how bad it ended up being. I have some respect for Joel for owning up to the fact that the movie sucked and apologizing for it.

In Freeze’s defense of the “Freeze in Hell” line, in Dante’s Divine Comedy, the final level of Hell is described as an ice field with people frozen in it. It also depicts Satan as having three heads (or at least three jaws) eternally chewing Brutus, Judas Iscariot, and I think Nero. So in a way, Freeze is accurate to at least something.
Judas (Traitor against God) Brutus (Traitor against the Empire) Cassius (Traitor against the Empire) - see Inferno, Canto 34, for details. Nero, if Dante were to put him in the Inferno, would probably in the 1st round of the 9th Circle, as a Traitor against his relatives - that is, in the lowest section of Hell to which his crimes condemned him. Dante did not live to see the re-discovery of the writings of Tacitus.

Batman the Animated Series was amazing. The fact that this movie ripped off (rather poorly) one of the best episodes of the Animated series should be considered a crime. Anyway, this movie is not the worst movie ever made, and neither is it the worst Superhero movie ever made. But is just full of disappointment for me. On an unrelated note, I didn't remember that Lionel Luther was the mad scientist. Seriously, the actor who portrayed the mad scientist also portrayed Lionel Luther on Smallville. Man that guy gets around DC.
You are one of the only UA-cam channels that recognise the butchering of Bane. You see, Bane was my favourite Batman villain after reading the comic book, Knightfall. Then, the Animated Series was a great adaptation. But I wanted to see him in live action. So, I saw this when I was 11, and DAMN was I disappointed. Then The Dark Knight Rises happened and now I'm back on the Bane hype train.
Have YOU looked around at Alfred's life? It IS one of servitude. He's sick (and damn near dying in this movie) and Bruce still has him serving the household hand over foot. Bruce talks to him like he's family, but hes' just the help.
Now gluten free!? Oh thank goodness, I thought I'd never be able to watch your videos again!!! My favorite part of Michael Keaton being Batman is that Keaton went to Kent State University, the college I recently graduated from. So, when people ask why I went to that particular university, I tell them "Because Batman is an alumni of Kent." This is an acceptable answer.
I always thought this one was like the 1960’s Batman but more new for our time, it was colorful, they just needed the comic book noise words to pop up when they fight, POW! Pop! Crunch! Snap! Crackle!
Okay, first off, Schumacher is not entirely to blame for this film. He didn't write the story or the script, for one, and there was a lot of corporate meddling involved. Schumacher wanted to return to the darker tone of the first two films, but Warner Bros. was afraid that such an act would cause the film to flop at the box office, and since "Batman Forever" was such a big hit, they told him to stick to the formula he'd already used, and perhaps go a bit further. He reluctantly went along with it, on the promise that the next film, "Batman Triumphant", would be a dark and gritty film. The casting is average: Arnie was an odd choice, but George Clooney could have been a good Batman with the write script and design--his voice did kind of remind me of Kevin Conroy and I can easily see Clooney play the Bruce Wayne character. What we got was a guilty pleasure at best: Arnold is just having a ball, and he's so fun to watch, even though his dialogue is stupid. It's a bad movie, but it is enjoyably bad. I can laugh at the silliness here. I get no such feeling from the Batman v. Superman movie. It is a wholly terrible film. On top of bad acting, awkward casting choices, an all-over-the-place story, and uninteresting characters, it's straight-up BORING. Nothing about it was compelling or memorable at all. It was just shit.
Patrick Shields He made note that Schumacher apologized for the movie at the end of the video, which Schumacher did, but even Doug Walker (who hated the movie) noted that an apology wasn't really owed, at least not by Schumacher, since the movie's problems were not entirely, or even primarily, his fault.
Cheapsunglasses the reason why i liked smeghead videos better than doug walker's was because, imo, he's much better at handling differing opinions unlike doug but that's just me, and yes i know it's only a comedy show. and i too hated the movie but i know why it was made the way it was.
Cheapsunglasses okay, i went to your google plus and i'll be honest, i have the same problems with confused matthew as i have with doug walker, matthew to me, is a fucking psychopath, who has a seroius problems with differing opinions, but again it's just me.
I am a long time Batman fan, and this movie made me feel dirty. I don't like the new Batman vs. Superman, but that film had some dignity compared to this.
Travis De La Fuente Tell me about it. Hell, say what you will about Damian Wayne as Robin. But at least he's not as whiny as this version of the character.
Freeze in Hell is a reference to Dante's Inferno where the lowest level is where Satan stays and is frozen over. I would call it a good reference but this is B&R we're talking about.
I just realized you played U2's "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me" at a low volume for the clips for Batman Forever. That song is extremely underrated!
I am going to be honest here, this movie along with Batman Forever made me hate Robin until the 2003 Teen Titans animated series. I think the main problem was having an obviously adult man in the role and still writing him as if he was a rebellious teenage boy. I would be way more lenient with the attitude Robin in these movies had if he was between the ages 13 to 16 years old because that is already a tough time in your life and he was there when his parents died, but it looked like this Robin was in either his mid or late twenties. As someone who also loved what Batman the Animated Series did to Mr Freeze and hold him up as one of the perfect examples of a sympathetic villain, I was not fond of what they did to him. They wanted him to be a goofy dude who spewed bad puns about ice, but were also using the storyline that made him so popular with more modern audiences which didn’t work because to me Mr Freeze is usually meant to be more solemn and serious. The only time I saw adding some humor for Mr Freeze worked was in the recent Harley Quinn series and that was mostly because he was socially awkward and he retained his serious nature when it came to his work because he only cared about saving his wife. Even when I was younger and more lenient towards movies than I am now, I knew that Batman and Robin sucked.
In defense of Mr. Schumacher I've got to say that, at the very least he was profesional enough to come out and make a public apology for the movie to the fans.... imagine that in 2022, a director apologizing for a mistake that came out of good will instead of pinpointing collectives or other movies for their failure..... That would be nuts!! (God knows I'm not Schumacher biggest fan, and apart from "Falling Down" I've never like his movies, but at least I have to respect a director that's willing to admit he was wrong)

The main problem with the sequels to the original Tim Burton Batman movie is that the parents that complained were huge fans of the campy TV series of the 60s, and quite literally demanded the more contemporary movies be turned into the same thing. Don't get me wrong, I also enjoy the campy 60s TV series.... but it was a product of it's time. Once you realize that, it's okay to allow the newer version to be a product of IT'S time. Sheesh!
This is a guilty pleasure for me. I came into it with not too many big expectations about what the Batman lore is supposed to be. Plus, this one tickled my fancy since it was much lighter than the others. Plus, plus, Poison Ivy is DAMN HOT!!!
I assume Mr. Freeze's suit is powered by diamonds is because a slang term for diamonds is, or I guess, was, 'Ice'. How the suit processes diamonds into a power source still doesn't make much sense. ^^;
To be honest, Schumacher originally wanted to make some darker Batman films, inspired by Batman: Year One, and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, but studio interference partially resulted in the more lighthearted tone of Batman Forever and Batman and Robin.
I think Michelle's Catwoman was every boy's first introduction to "HOT MOMMA!" Also to add, Joel's "WE'RE MAKING A CARTOON" thing actually was because he _gave up at that point_ thanks to Warner Bros. fucking up the movie with all the toy promotions and ruining the script.
Interesting the accident with chemicals made her Poison Ivy, an accident with chemicals made Mr. Freeze, an accident with chemicals made The Flash, chemicals made the Joker, acid, a chemical, made Two Face, Bane uses chemicals
If the writing wasn't so lazy, they could have just said that Ivy gets the Southern hemisphere and Freeze gets the Northern hemisphere. Ivy gets the warmest places. Freeze gets the coldest places.
To me, Ivy got it the worst in this movie. I mean, sure. Thurmon hamming it up was HILARIOUS but at the same time, THIS WAS NOT POISON IVY. Even in the sex appeal department there was none and as a scientist....are you kidding me. The cartoons also gave more backstory to Ivy and seeing this incarnation more or less made her like....a water-downed version of the femme fatal type. I mean, I LIKE femme fatal but she was just playing TOO hammy that it wasn't sexy and pre-Ivy she came off more as a nutball. Interesting fact; I do believe the man she was working for was supposed to be another of Batman's rouges, Plantman but given how everyone was treated WHO WOULD KNOW?! All in all, the animated series did better for ALL THREE of the big bads in this, especially for the likes of Freeze and Bane. I remember Bane being this big, menacing but also INTELLIGENT and RUTHLESS monster of a guy and the way Bats beat him the first time in the series was actually pretty clever as he KNEW he couldn't beat Bane using his own strength so instead, he turned Bane's strength against him, more or less sending that 'venom' into him at such a high rate that the dude nearly EXPLODED. I remember that scene being one of the CREEPIEST things I have ever seen because of the way Bane was screaming for everything to stop and how they showed the dude just...just on the verge of keeling over and going up from his own weapon. And then Batman takes the dude, unmasks him, let's his big ass fall right before everyone as he just walks away. DAYUM. Yeah, this Bane was....well, it was a dumb-down version of the Hulk to be honest but the thing with the Hulk...he's not STUPID and that's one of the things I HATE about people when they try to parody the Hulk and get it wrong. Yes, he's a HULK but it's been shown in the movies and even in a lot of the past animated series (With the exception of Super Hero Squad which WAS a parody and a good one at that) that while Hulk was limited to TALK LIKE THIS he was not a dumb-ass. He was just pure rage and in a sense, when a person is angry their thoughts get lost and they can't think rationally. That is more or less the Hulk. This Bane....was someone completely lost on both how Bane AND the Hulk worked. Some might say that Bane is a Hulk rip-off but he had his own personality, fighting style as well as the fact that when he was injected himself he kept his intelligence through and through. Bane was BRAIN and BRAWN and BRUTALITY which was the thing that made him scary as well as AWESOME as a baddie. But after all of this, what more can be said? The movie sucks and I remember watching it when I was like...10 years old maybe? 11 I think but yeah, there were commercials and tie-ins GALORE for this but as a kid, I remember watching it but I can't remember if I actually enjoyed it. As I said, I was a kid and maybe I did like it because BATMAN but as I got older I realized just how...bad it was, especially as I was going back and watching the animated series a lot more.

Clooney himself pretty much hates it, he's talked about it countless times.
How I would fix batman and robin
1. Remove the bat nipples
2. Get rid of the campy tone
3. Remove poison ivy and bane and just have mr freeze has the villian and get someone else to play him
4. Give Bruce Wayne and victor fries a relationship with Nora fries alive
5. Have something go down at Wayne enterprises batman and robin arrives to save everyone but doesn't quite manage save victor and Nora who both are caught in a liquid nitrogen accident Nora dies but victor survives he blames batman for his wife's death goes after robin and freezes him and holds him prisoner threatens to kill robin batman and freeze have an epic battle batman punches freeze until he's in near death robin intervened batman realizes what he almost did he takes off his cowl and reveals to identity to freeze fries realizes he almost killed his long time friend freeze takes one batman denation devices and kills himself and says "I'm sorry Bruce and Nora" but that's just my idea how would you guys fix batman and robin
"2. Get rid of the campy tone"
No. Absolutely not.

If this is not the worst superhero movie, especially batman, what is...a Turkish knockoff!!!🤔
Um what do you mean ripoff? They were adapting Batman. What do you expect? Brad you’re stupid 🤦♀️

Not sure Bane count as a villain in this movie. He's more like Bob the henchmen from Batman
Have YOU looked around at Alfred's life? It IS one of servitude. He's sick (and damn near dying in this movie) and Bruce still has him serving the household hand over foot. Bruce talks to him like he's family, but hes' just the help.
Um….
You and Nostalgia Critic had the exact same reaction to the Batgirl is Barbara? Whaaaaa?
Now gluten free!? Oh thank goodness, I thought I'd never be able to watch your videos again!!!
My favorite part of Michael Keaton being Batman is that Keaton went to Kent State University, the college I recently graduated from. So, when people ask why I went to that particular university, I tell them "Because Batman is an alumni of Kent." This is an acceptable answer.
I think that's the most acceptable answer of all.
Bat credit card.
Words fail me.
Linkara had broken that joke, last year.
@c0mf0rta61ynum6:
"Batman is rich!"
I always thought this one was like the 1960’s Batman but more new for our time, it was colorful, they just needed the comic book noise words to pop up when they fight, POW! Pop! Crunch! Snap! Crackle!
I've been waiting for this review to happen for a long time.
Gotta love that there is apparently one generation gap from Michael Gough to Alicia Silverstone...
While this film is over 25 years old now, it's still hard to see anyone making a 'lighter' Batman film after this.
What about The Lego Batman Movie?
+Cheapsunglasses i thought he mentioned that in the review. or he probably knew that in real life but forgot to put that fact in by mistake
Patrick Shields
He made note that Schumacher apologized for the movie at the end of the video, which Schumacher did, but even Doug Walker (who hated the movie) noted that an apology wasn't really owed, at least not by Schumacher, since the movie's problems were not entirely, or even primarily, his fault.
Cheapsunglasses and don't even say that i was butthurt when i saw these reviews, they just do not work for me.
I am a long time Batman fan, and this movie made me feel dirty. I don't like the new Batman vs. Superman, but that film had some dignity compared to this.
+Travis De La Fuente good god, batman and robin gives me diarrhea
Travis De La Fuente Tell me about it. Hell, say what you will about Damian Wayne as Robin. But at least he's not as whiny as this version of the character.
No, it's the other way around. Batman and Robin is at least hilarious in how bad it is. Batman vs Superman hurt me.
Fun Fact: Another nickname for diamonds used in the 90's was "Ice". So Mr. Freeze was literally powered by Ice.... It was another pun...
Freeze in Hell is a reference to Dante's Inferno where the lowest level is where Satan stays and is frozen over. I would call it a good reference but this is B&R we're talking about.
"Totally outragous" ....You're doing Jem and the Holograms aren't you? Sweet!!
Good Point! Why is Robin a grown-ass man, mooching off of Batman? I bet he doesn't even pay him rent.
Underworld Moaner is a great song. Had it on vinyl and it had batman sticker in the middle. They play it during the bike race scene.
Excuse me, it's not Joel Schumacher that wanted the movie of batman & robin like this it's W.B. that wanted like this
They complained that Batman & Batman Returns were too dark and violent. Uhhh question, do they not understand the Batman character at all?
1:08 What about Supergirl (1984)?
Robert Treacy
That’s a good suggestion!
Hey, he has SOME standards!
I feel like Uma Thurman was channeling Scary Spice with that hair.
Spice World came out at the same time as Batman and Robin.
I always thought Ivy’s wig looked like something Lady Gaga would wear.

lol on the diamond issue, i have herd gangsters in movies refer to diamonds as 'ice'.
Sheesh!
At least The Lego Batman Movie was a fun toy commercial for Batman.
Heart of Ice was the shit!
We live in a world where the worst Batman film is not Batman & Robin...
This is a guilty pleasure for me. I came into it with not too many big expectations about what the Batman lore is supposed to be. Plus, this one tickled my fancy since it was much lighter than the others. Plus, plus, Poison Ivy is DAMN HOT!!!
Batman Begins was a clean slate!
And it sucked! Hugely. Epicly
I assume Mr. Freeze's suit is powered by diamonds is because a slang term for diamonds is, or I guess, was, 'Ice'. How the suit processes diamonds into a power source still doesn't make much sense. ^^;
To be honest, Schumacher originally wanted to make some darker Batman films, inspired by Batman: Year One, and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, but studio interference partially resulted in the more lighthearted tone of Batman Forever and Batman and Robin.
+Pete Hill i tried to get this through my brothers head but he still blames schumacher for these movies

Pete Hill well, so were dc and marvel debates and i saw that comment on google plus.
Nope. If the rest of the movie hadn't been so goddamn goofy, the Mr. FREEZE hideout bit could have been comedy gold.
It's so funny that parents were bitching about how dark the movie was while the TV show was on every day while no one complained
14:40 He Changed Isley into Poison Ivy , Ala Just like How in a way of saying Max Shrek Turned Turned Michelle Phieffer into Catwoman In Part 2?
At least that was part of the comics, the Mac Schrek thing from Returns was purely a film original
At least Val Kilmer was trying in Batman Forever
I enjoy val in forever
Actually, Uma Thurman was totally FAB as Poison Ivy, Pure Camp
Yeah, as bad as this movie is, I did enjoy Uma’s scenery chewing.
I think Michelle's Catwoman was every boy's first introduction to "HOT MOMMA!"
Also to add, Joel's "WE'RE MAKING A CARTOON" thing actually was because he _gave up at that point_ thanks to Warner Bros. fucking up the movie with all the toy promotions and ruining the script.
AtrocityEquine I think anyone who watched the 60s TV show thought the same way about Julie newmar's catwoman

The Mr Freeze episode is one of the most heartbreaking episodes
The heartbreaking episode centering around Mr. Freeze that you are referring to is "Heart of Ice" from "Batman: The Animated Series."
Yeah, when he said "Truly outrageous" it's safe to say I got really excited. I've been waiting on him to tear that movie a new one for a while.
I have been having one s***fest of a day. Thank you so much for uploading this. You may have just saved my sanity.
The mad scientist in this movie kind of looks like a twisted version of Jim Henson. Am I the only one who thinks this?
The funny thing is that the actor played Lionel Luthor in Smallville.
.....no not at all actually
I'm thinking FUBAR Rick Sanchez
8:17 In fact, according to the Divine Comedy, the last circle of hell is frozen. So Arnold was trying to be clever?
The ninth circle - Treachery
Interesting the accident with chemicals made her Poison Ivy, an accident with chemicals made Mr. Freeze, an accident with chemicals made The Flash, chemicals made the Joker, acid, a chemical, made Two Face, Bane uses chemicals
You may or may not see this but every time I see your videos in my video box, I get happy :)
If the writing wasn't so lazy, they could have just said that Ivy gets the Southern hemisphere and Freeze gets the Northern hemisphere. Ivy gets the warmest places. Freeze gets the coldest places.
True dat.
Im sorry but Joel Schumacher doesn't want Batman & robin to be a live action cartoon but W.B. does want it
In the comics, Mr Freeze stole diamonds because he needed them as lenses for his Ice guns.
+Isolder74 I just figured it was because an old timey slang term for diamonds was "ice".
that's probably the production reason, not the in-universe reason.
The diamonds aren't doing that in the movie
