      Yeah.
I mean, they went from a bit goofy to be sure, but a bit more adult version, which in some ways felt like a longer version of a joker episode of the animated series, to something a complete satire of itself with the next 2 films...
Adam west version was fine, but it was intentionally stupid and silly because that's the market they were aiming for was kids.
People loved the animated and Michael Keaton films because it didn't treat us like kids anymore.. They gave us depth of character and plot intrigue. That gave way to just more silliness immediately. Which is a shame too because Mr. Freeze in tge animated series won academy awards for it's voice work and animation.

      Totally.
Not everything is supposed to be kid friendly.
Seriously, who would let their kids watch south park just because it's 'animated?'
I love the darker stuff. (Darker as in more serious and not campy)
Yeah, the second batman film (first Keaton film) had some camp to it, but it took itself serious enough to appreciate the adult audience as well.
Like An American Tale. Yeah, it was technically for kids, but jeez. That no cars in America song had a lot of broken up bits of tragic moments in it, and all the places Fivel ended up going to had a lot of depressing themes.
But that's what I enjoyed about it. Like Doug says at the beginning of the dark toons episodes, it made me feel more grown up having watched it because of all that stuff he went through.
Give us more mask of the phantasm showing Bruce essentially punishing himself thinking he foesn't deserve any joy in his life after losing his parents.
Give us more of the conflict between Flagg and Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad squaring of the questioning whether it's right or wrong to hide info from the masses for the sake of temporary peace between nations.

And it was Joel Schumacher who wanted Robin Williams as The Riddler, and The Batchlers wrote The Riddler with Williams in mind. Williams read the screenplay for Batman Forever and he loved it. Due to a salary dispute, they made an offer to Jim Carrey and Williams found out about it when he read it in the trades, according to Ben Wan (The man who knows too much about Batman) and Andrew Bush on Superhero Stuff You Should Know.

To be fair this was clearly inspired by Nolan's version, Batman hunted by the cops after the second film, bruce stopping going out as batman for a time and becoming a recluse, and a mad bomber villian, who goes from cheap pipe bombs to a city wide terror spree once they get mob support, Nolan's influence is everywhere.
Frankly in a universe where this was made I would think the next reboot/incarnation of the character would be more fantastic and over the top, Maybe Nolan would have leaned more into the supernatural side of Raas Al'Ghul's character, Play up the immortal villian with a cause angle, or lean more into the sci fi angle with villians like freeze who only work due to comic book science.
Nolan's trilogy was the most gritty and "realistic" batman, villians didn't go for huge gag themed threats, Joker puting a bomb in a jack in the box, scarecrow using pumpkins etc, wouldn't fit in nolan's take, but this version of Forever went in that direction a bit, so veering into other "flavors" feels right for any future incarnations, as long as you don't go full camp like adam west or somaker's other batman film, that could work for a cartoon or a series, but not for a modern movie take.
Maybe it would be like the Arkham games, dark tones using sci fi tech to facilitate grand villian plots, probably using villians that haven't been used before, Like Black mask, or that were used poorly, Like Bane (I liked Nolan's bane fine but it would be very interesting to see what he wouuld be like in this hypothetical universe, and he wasn't used much in other tv or theatrical releases.) I could see a Nolan Batman using part of Arkham Orgin's plot for example, Black mask in particular is a great villian for blurring the line between mobster and Supervillian. Hush and Dr. Hugo Strange would be interesting foes as well, though ideally in settings where there are a lot of other villians to bounce off of, or at least are implied to exist.

Actually, it was Joel Schumacher who wanted Robin Williams to play The Riddler in Batman Forever. Lee and Janet Scott Batchler wrote The Riddler with Robin Williams in mind, since they already had Tommy Lee Jones as Two-Face.
In the first two drafts written by the Batchlers, they gave Riddler the name of Lyle Heckendorf, not Edward Nygma. His company was not NygmaTech. His name was Lyle Heckendorf. So the name of the company was HeckTech. And Joel came up with a scene that was not in the final film where Lyle stalks Bruce Wayne and Chase Meridian at the circus, where they're about to see the Graysons die, and in order to get closer to Bruce, Lyle stole clothes from a fortune telling leprechaun, which form the basis of the Riddler outfit. And in the same script, he has magenta hair.
The Batchlers knew somebody who had worked with Robin and knew Robin that somebody talked to him about it. He read the script. He loved it. He wanted to do it. And his agency said, "Don't worry. They'll have to come to you. Nobody else in town who does what you do." And his management said to Warner Bros., "If Michael Keaton is getting $15 million and the percentage of the gross and the percentage of merchandising, we'll be asking for our client too?" And Warner Bros. have a heavy heart and said "Alright, forget the percentage of the gross, we're spending $30 million on the two actors and we didn't start filming until September. Let's think about recasting." And they made an offer to Jim Carrey that we get, and Robin found out about it when he read it in the trades.
It also said that WB used Robin to trick Jack Nicholson into playing The Joker in the 1989 Batman film.

Batman Forever is my favorite Bat-flick and there's only a few things I would have changed (make Robin a kid, give Sugar & Spice an ending, and have Two-Face be more lowkey villain). But I really liked this. Good job making Riddler' character darker without making him grim.

  • @Cobra_125
    @Cobra_125 3 роки тому +44

    That was fucking beautiful.
I mean honestly it felt less like conjecture about Tim Burton's version and more like just if you wrote it yourself, but I don't really care because this actually felt *better* than if Burton wrote it.
Burton notably didn't care about Robin, and I'm not sure his Two-Face would've been as sympathetic and well written as he was here (given the issues his Penguin had, although a good deal of that was due to the script).
I'm admittedly not sure how I feel about how Grace became the center of a love square between Harvey, Bruce, and Edward (still deciding how I feel about her kissing Bruce), but at least she wasn't fridged here, and she actually fulfilled her role as the one person who can finally bring Harvey back from the darkness!
I also just enjoyed the hell out of your Riddler take. He was deluded, with his own set of standards, refusing to let Two-Face kill the Bat if he didn't solve the riddle first. The way he manipulated Two-Face and challenged Batman's wits was brilliant, and I really loved how he simply accepted his death, thinking he had finally won.
Your Two-Face was also just absolutely wonderful. He wasn't just a generic evil guy like he was in Forever, but someone with justified motivation for hunting Batman as well as the other officials. You nailed just why he's such a great threat by establishing him as someone who knows the law inside and out, and also can easily persuade people into his gang. The ending of your script was just heartbreaking, but I'm glad you chose to actually let Harvey reform rather than die.
Your take on Bruce as an introspected, tortured man was wonderful, and you even managed to make Robin feel justified and helpful without being annoying about it. Great work overall, I would've loved it if this had been the real movie we got!

@@xavierramirez1911 Actually the fact it's more grounded and realistic is exactly what makes it inaccurate... Batman doesn't just take on normal mob bosses and crazy clowns you know, ever heard of ClayFace? Man-Bat? Killer Croc? Poison Ivy? Seems you are the one that misses the point. Batman is not realistic just because he doesn't have powers you know, the point of Batman is that he is a regular (albeit peak condition) human going up against mutant monsters, aliens, demons, gods.
Oh and not only was Clooney the only live action Batman that never actually killed anyone in his movie, his movie is basically a homage to the 60's era of comics and tv show... so yeah, even he is more accurate than Bale😂👍

If this ever became a graphic novel, id read it

    • @evanzaremba4722

No, because Batman Forever never started out as a Tim Burton project. It was always Joel Schumacher's baby, according to Ben Wan (The Man Who Knows Too Much About Batman) and Andrew Bush on Superhero Stuff You Should Know.
And according to their interview with Lee and Janet Scott Batchler, Tim Burton's only involvement with Batman Forever was to hire his friend Joel Schumacher as director, and helping out hiring the Batchlers to write the screenplay, and that's why in the opening credits of Batman Forever, Burton was credited as producer.
And there's the Batman 89 comic in hardcover, but were based on unused ideas that Sam Hamm had for the first two Batman films.

Robin Williams as the Riddler is intruiging. A man so well known for a lot of his more happy and upbeat roles, to imagine him in a dark role like the riddled is incredibly interesting and Id would have loved to see where his improvisation would have taken the role.

I don't think so. He would be a comedic one, because Robin Williams was a stand-up guy. Joel Schumacher asked Robin Williams to play The Riddler, before Jim Carrey was cast.
