In this episode of Bro Labs, I Put My Body To The Test! Putting it Against A Monkey's Fist. This is probably one of my craziest stunts yet, but trust me the results speak for themselves. The monkey fist is a somewhat old weapon, usually made with paracord and some sort of large metal ball bearing or something similar. Pretty sure it's an old sailor's knot from way back.

As far as my knowledge goes, its called a monkeys fist after the monkeys fist knot. which is usually tied at the end of a rope to give it weight... better for throwing onto the deck of a ship at least 20ft up. they also used it to tether ships together while transporting supplies from one ship to another while at sea back in WW1, and probably earlier.

A monkeys fist is a tool that can be used as a weapon, its normally a rock wrapped / tied with rope in s particular way used to grab things like dry branches out of trees

The “Monkey Fist” name seems to come from the bruise left behind. Marks bruise looked exactly like a monkey’s fist shape.
So as Houston showed Davy Jones holding, is what is known as a monkey fist. It's a type of knot that is in the shaped of a ball and has 3 rounds of cordage on each 'side'. It was used as a hauling knot, a knot that would be tied on the end of a piece of rope to give it more masses so it was easier to heave longer distances. It got it's name from the very thing you noticed as it was also sometimes used as a punishment knot less the captain had a cat o' nine tails and would leave as you said monkey sized fist bruises on the afflicted.

Whipping pain is definitely the worst, my friend and I found a random electrical cable and tied it to a stick to make an improvised whip like what, probably 20 years ago now, and within 5 seconds he managed to accidentally whip me in the neck and I still haven't forgotten how painful it was lol
I only know the monkey's fist knot. It links loops of rope over itself to create a dense ball of line that can easily be thrown to incoming ships or boats for docking. I wasn't expecting the jankiest self-defense weapon ever
