you two are making me enjoy film photography so much!! I pretty much stopped looking at Digital Videos, their constant noise about megapixels and a ton of other crap that cameras must have lol. you two keep things soooooo chill and remind me why i enjoy photography. PS you guys should hang out.
Great work my man. Moved back to the Lou last year but grew up in Alton. Recently got the Pentax 67 and want to take it to on a photo walk through Alton. I’ve printed a book of that town but have been wanting to get back and explore new ideas and areas. Let me know if you’d be down to grab a coffee or drink and maybe we can explore some places in that unique river town.
I've just found you looking for I-don't-know-what in internet and.. boom! You went straight to my favs. Amazing photography you take my friend and loads of stuff to watch during my holydays. Congratulations for your channel.
Dude, you have to shut off the noise and go do what you do, Everything has been photographed before, but, has it been photographed by you?! Just like you said in your vid, go shoot what you want, anyway you want it. As for the paper weight, the larger format you get the more it has to lock down and, cheap large format cameras just don't cut it. As always, great images and videos!
I was pleasantly surprised by the car photo. The morning dew helped with the...tones... the pentax is great. Always enjoyed it and exponentially easier to use compared to an 8x10. haha
what I really like about analogue photography is that it slows me down and makes me appreciate the moment (and every frame) ... so for me taking photos is almost therapeutic on some days. hope you your feeling better and taking your time.
One of my favourite subjects to photograph - Big Fat Detroit Chrome from the 60's and 70's. In my books, you're not a photographer unless you have at least 100 photos of Fat Detroit Chrome attached to the appropriate American car, and the lighting has to be just right as well in order to show off the magnificent curves of the Fat Detroit Chrome. Of the 100 photos one takes on the road to becoming a great photographer "MUST" include a 1970 Buick Rivera - with the classic Boat tail wrap around glass, and if you don't have one of those photos in your 100 photos, then just forget it, you might as well pack it in and start looking for something else to move you creatively. So... Bryan... you are there man, don't for a single moment pull back now and start thinking about second guessing your photography. This video was super by the way, I enjoyed it immensely.
I have to admit that I’ve laughed with and thumbed up a YT comment that lightheartedly touched on the car bumper cliche…. But you are absolutely correct… if you feel compelled to take the picture… go take the picture. Nothing wrong with that.
I’ve made fun too but that was when I thought I was hot shit and above that. Truth is nobody is above anything and it took me a while to figure that out.
Another great video, and yes forget what people on the internet say do what you want to do... My dad had a 72 boat tail Riviera like that when I was a kid, I loved that thing.
As someone who's loved classic cars since well before I was into photography or analog, heck yeah I'm gonna take pictures of every old car I see and the internet can't stop me
The colour and tones on that car are gorgeous. Just a nice reminder to follow your gut feeling and take photographs that you like. If others like it as well, consider it a nice bonus :-).
100% I understand the self doubt! I think we all struggle with it from time to time! (In my opinion) this was one of the best things I have seen on UA-cam in a LONG time! Not to puff your head up or shower you with meaningless compliments but I FIRMLY believe that WHEN you lean into who you are and allow YOUR thoughts and ideas to flow without a filter, you will even surprise yourself! Keep up the Great work! I truly enjoyed watching this!
Completely agreed about the discussion of clichés - seems to be as prevalent as ever that people get blasted for it. A significant majority (~99.8%) of film shooters are utilizing analog formats on a purely non-professional basis. They took up film photography because maybe they just liked the look, or what is often the case, they feel in touch with a certain analog spirit that compels them to populate their life with tangible images. The "clichés" like vintage cars, vintage signs, vintage anything, I think are mostly byproducts of that interest in the physical analog world. And as you've said before, shooting vintage things with vintage cameras - something just feels right about it, and I think it's because there's an extension of the hobby that encompasses all analog things. That is natural, and I'm glad you're encouraging people tuning in here to go for whatever feels right to them.
100% agree. don't get mad Bryan. Forget those shits. Keep on doing your good things, you may not need everyone to enjoy the works, all you needed are those when you look at your works or old works, you always thanks for yourself, thanks for what you did truly reflecting yourself. Thats photography !
Forget the imposter syndrome, you've got real talent. You were right to the picture of the car its a banger shot. Love your channel, the way it's edited and insight into the USA, keep on going they're very much appreciated.
Dude. You’re a brilliant photographer and an amazing filmmaker. Why you’d give a shit what anyone else thinks I don’t know. Photograph what makes you happy.
Great video and amazing photographs. Really enjoyed seeing your photos and being from the UK it was nice to see some footage of somewhere in the US that we don't normally see. Take whatever photos you like and keep up the great work.
You're right: one can take a photo of anything they want. These days I take a lot of photos of classic cars on film and I don't give a shit what anyone thinks, on the contrary I share them with people who enjoy that so I never feel bad about taking supposedly "cliché" shots.
Hey Bryan, you don't give a s*** about what others say and think. You are a real photographer and artist! There are people including me who love your work (even though you might not give a s*** on this comment as well!) Trying to escape from cliché is really cliché.
Had to stop my work out while I watched this so I could comment. THANK YOU for showing some frustration. It gets old seeing these almost scripted UA-cam videos about photography where everything comes out dope etc. We know the film game isn’t always forgiving and the critics in your head can be the worst ones. Love the content.
Great video and beautiful shots. I just received my mint pentax 67 ii and would love to find someone to share the Pentax geekery with lol. I live in STL! So much to shoot around here!
Bro, NO IMPOSTOR SYNDROME, at least not with you and your work! It's fcukin amazing, especially these kinds of messages that each of your video has (and helps us others stand back up when we fall down). Keep at it :)
Thanks! Two tripod legs spread out on the floor and then the third one is pushed up against the backseat for stabilization. Super easy and works great.
@@BryanBirks with all due respect to mr grainy, I personally much prefer your photography style and photographs as a whole, plus think your videos and use of humour is better refined than him
Lately I've been reticent to take pictures since for 4x5 or even 645 it may not be "worth it" for each frame and the cost. So I started using a half frame Konica recorder where you can get 72+ shots on one 35mm roll. Definitely lowered the barrier for cost per shot and it's convenient to carry around for daily use. Just stating it as a possible way to get out of ruts. Peace

A wonderful quote from my favorite photographer.
Although we were both steered astray, we have found our home yet again in the Pentax 67. Glad to have you back sir.

Haha oh definitely. Need to get out to New Zealand one day!

Thanks Todd. It is a slow learning process for me but I’m getting there. Totally agree with 8x10. The format does not vibe with cheap parts. Haha
Love the shot of the boat tail Riviera. Fvck the haters. Too much negative noise on social media platforms. I appreciate your work mate.
I am very critical. Brian.. your work does NOT suck at all. I enjoyed this video.
Happy to hear that. Thank you 🙏🏻
That last Alton photo is what's up
Dude that 4x5 of the Riviera is amazing. Also cool to see you come back to the Pentax, must be nice after all the hassle of that Intrepid 8x10.

The glass in the Riviera made me pause, a more interesting tone and color than found in many Antarctic iceberg images.
