I was actually planning on getting an Ally X, stripping my PC for the GPU (3070ti) and the power supply and making my own eGPU. That was before I knew this unit existed. That's a way cleaner setup and has swayed me to just take the GPU and run with it. Great video man. ✌

Dude, I’m SOO glad you mentioned the driver issues with AMD EGPUs. I’ve had so many issues with my Ally X and GPD G1 (rx7600m). It’s a nightmare. Great video man
Looks like a pretty clean setup, great option for a big performance boost for the ally x or legion Go. Having an egpu has been my best add on toy handhelds. Usb 4 should be plug and play after initial setup, oculink is definitely more particular. You have to power everything down, then plug in oculink cords, then power on egpu, then finally power on device. When you shut down the handheld, you have to unplug the egpu once the handheld is off. If you dont the egpu will overheat on its own (its a pain).
Pretty smooth. I myself ordered the OnexGPU 2. Dock, M.2, and graphics all in one. I havent seen the driver issues with it from anyone.... yet... Solid video my man.
with the new m4 pro mac mini that just came out with thunderbolt 5 up to 120Gb/s, maybe we'll see an eGPU dock with thunderbolt 5 in the near future along with handhelds that support it too like the Ally 2. plus it'll be nice that it's a universal usb-c connector that should be backwards compatible with thunderbolt 4
All credit to you for doing this video👌🏻🙏🏻 This definitely helped me out to decide what kind of setup to spend my money on. Keep up with the good work 👊🏻 //P

10:23 bro I noticed u still used the preset of 8 gb allocated to the ally x igpu by default. U don't need this. It's better to set the ally x igpu vram to 1 gb so the device can allocate 23 gbs of ram to system memory. 😊😊 U already have enough vram from ur 4070.
For anyone that wants to go this route only get a 0.5m thunderbolt 4 cable anything over will cause stuttering issues especially on the legion (they loose bandwidth the longer the cable so 0.5m or even smaller). Some legions have a defect causing it to bluescreen even just on an external display. Also the legion has less ram so that can cause issues with stuttering and blue screening in certain games like avatar (because its a 50/50 chance it wont un-allocate the ram thats set aside for the igpu - even if you change it in bios) so best to go with the ally x.
I can see the huge amount of work that goes into these videos and love your chilled out narration (I watch a lot of SkillUP for the same reason). I’m thinking whenever I make the switch from my current 3080 to whatever I upgrade my desktop to, I’ll definitely end up buying this dock and using my 3080 on my AllyX. I love this type of versatility and the options it leaves for modifying and improving performance
Dude, I just bought a LeGo 2 days ago and had no idea how great it would work with Windows and now I see this gpu dock and I think I can get rid of my desktop and just use the LeGo. Too bad my desktop has an AMD card! And Flume.... He's the best.
Hey mate just wanted to thank you for recommendation on ROG ALLy X bought it second hand 2 weeks ago and it is amazing how it performs. Maybe one day i will also be able to get this egpu setup ❤
Hey man, great video. If you connect display port directly from the graphics card to your monitor you should unlock some extra performance! Looks like on your video you rely on the usb hub for the video output so you’re taking up some bandwidth there.😊 Won’t look as clean on your desk though! Keep it up, awesome content!
@ yeah, definitely try it out and see if you get an improvement. Make sure you’re not using the Ally/LeGo screen and just your monitor as well. With your setup you’re sending a huge amount of data through the usb cable over to the graphics card and then having to return data from the card through the usb cable to your device and usb hub which will bottleneck it more.
Amazing video and thank you so much for explaining everything. Two questions: due to egpu dock of 400W we can't run stronger RTX gpu or can in future? 2nd question: After plug TB4 cable into ally x for the first time, do we need to install some nvidia drivers on ally x? Sorry I am noob and new to this. Many thanks for your time and amazing content! Cheers :D
Dude I really enjoy your videos , great time watching Also how the heck is a 4070, 500$? Where I live it’s like 750$ , I guess that’s VAT taxes for ya. 😢
Update for anyone curious about this specific egpu dock: At the time of this comment, the linked EGPU is not currently available but can be pre-ordered on the site and will be an upgraded version. The upgrade will come with an upgraded 500W PSU, so any GPU with a TDP of 350W or lower can be used on here, so pretty much all of the currently available GPUs on the market with outliers.
Awesome video and the EGPU Dock just looked and it not that much right now 159.95 not a bad deal do you recommend me getting the Z1 extreme or just the Z1 I mean cause any news on a Z2 release date at all
Giving you a heads up. If you wanna get a slight bump in performance move your display port cable from the dock to the EGPU. Since the GPU has to back feed data into the handheld it looses some of the 40gbs goodness.
@@CyberDopamine did it improve performance and was it more or less stable? Curious because I'm running an egpu setup with a GPD Win 4, and like you, I've been running my hdmi from the dock to the monitor without issues. Been wondering if that's a mistake or not...
Nice video sir. I'm very hesitant on that EGPU built-in power supply may cause heat inside on the extensive games with very high settings. Also the knob seem not secured, I saw ETA prime video and it moved. Looking forward for them to improve this EGPU. BTW, my setup is also 4070 EGPU via oculink. it is around 20% to 30% difference betseen USB4 vs oculink.
Hello there. If the display output isn’t connected directly to the eGPU but instead goes back to the system, the rendered frame must travel back over the same connection (Thunderbolt/PCIe) to the main computer’s video output, which then sends it to the monitor. This back-and-forth creates an extra loop that can increase latency. Running the display directly from the eGPU instead avoids that return trip and usually reduces lag, as the frames can be sent straight to the monitor. So, it’s not exactly processing the data twice, but the additional round-trip increases the time it takes for the frame to reach the screen, which feels like added latency.

compared to TB3 eGPU docks, USB4 eGPU docks doesn't support hotplug but you can disable the gpu first in device manager then unplug the usb cable and it will not bsod
Surprised to see you use the display running to a dock( bottom usb) instead of the egpu. I did something similar when testing the onexgpu I got for my legion go. I ran egpu to game on the handheld display and in both scenarios it should cut down on bandwidth cause the signal goes back and forth. In your testing it should have ran with display going to the ports on the graphics card. In my testing onexgpu might give a usb c cable that doesn't handle the signal going back and forth. It got really hot and thermal throttled after a bit of handheld gaming. External monitor gaming from the egpu ports and I had no issues. They also give a stupid heavy power brick that's fixed to the plug off the outlet. During my first use thinking it could share a wall outlet and it fell out on its own. Mid game I didnt blue screen though but game crashed and I restarted the pc to recognize it again.

Thx for the video mate. I’m on the same jurney. How to improve the performance of the Ally X while docked. This solution is one way for me aswell. The other is the SGWZONE dock. It is more portable than this one and has a 4060 inside. I think it’s a laptop variant but several parts of the dock is modular. Like the GPU, the GaN power supply and the TB4/usb4 modul. The TB5 modul is under development. So I’m not surr wich one to choose.
But it has AMD graphics, so you get all these driver conflict issues. Consider the SWGZone Gaming eGPU. It contains an RTX 4060 and has all the ports you need and can be hooked up via USB 4 or oculink. Serves as dock and charger and eGPU. Plug and play. Just as portable as the GPD G1. See ua-cam.com/video/SxVJqdDZdJc/v-deo.html
Have you went into the Legion bios and switch it to give you more ram and less VRam since you're using that egpu setup? Just wanted to know if that could help even more
So, the point of getting a handheld is to "stream" your games to external monitor (which you need to buy), to play normally (mouse+kb), and the kick is, since the handheld lacks in the gpu department, you will need to buy an extra gpu and a dock and a power supply. Makes sense really.
So the comment on conflicting drivers is wrong. Amd's drivers Run pretty universal. Meaning it will install the drivers that are needed and run perfectly fine because the extreme Z1 Is nothing but an AMD 780m and it uses those drivers so if you did plug in an AMD graphics card for your egpu it would not conflict or have any issues. Coming from someone who currently uses a 7600 MXT on multiple AMD handhelds. If you want to talk about conflicting drivers, look at Intel And how they are with Nvidia egpus. And other Intel devices while trying to connect to AMD eGpus. Just FYI.
I think the disconnect may be using the most recent drivers for the card. If you accept the driver version released for the Z1 extreme, then yes it is probably fine. I think he was saying if you download the latest drivers for the card, those wouldn't recognize the Z1 extreme.
This is the setup I want. I currently run a msi claw, razer core x, and 3060ti. Honestly it's not great I play at 1440p and getting like 40-50fps. Planning on copying your setup and using a 4070 super instead of the 4070.
Do you think this could support a Sim Rig? I love driving and wanted to piece together a sim rig and didn't want to build a PC for it because I have the Legion Go. What do you think?
Surprised you picked the aoostar one versus something Ike the something like the osmeto ego1 or there is another one I forget the name where it has a built 8n battery. I believe for those you can power your device directly through the unit and you don’t need to plug in your handheld separately. I would look into those for a slightly better setup/user experience. Either way it is a cool thing to be able to unplug and take your handheld on the go.
do you think this setup can lead to avoid buying complete gaming PC ? I have legion go, but some games just run bad on it, do you think doing this or just replace it with gaming PC and I use the legion go just on the go or while travel?
Yo if you plug the display port or HDMI cable into the GPU instead of display dock, you will get almost 20 more FPS fyi...

What do you think?
yeah it should be possible
Does your setup work with bazzite ? And 2nd question, can this dock handle 4080 gpu ?
Not just that oculink is faster, it’s doesn’t do a conversion like thunderbolt does.
Absolutely. No need for a gaming computer anymore after you get a setup like this
Are there any performance differences between using the egpu with the Rog or the Macbook?
Macbook pro m4 is on par with a 4070 in some games but the accessibility/games you can play is that of a tomagatchi
Well shit I forgot that 😂 Thanks for the fast response mate! Highly appreciate your great content 👍
