This song isn't really meant to be one of his out and out comedy songs. He talks about the "journey" he takes his audience on throughout the show in many interviews. Tim deliberately puts these more emotional songs throughout the set to create light and shade. My favourite of all time is probably Prejudice, or Inflatable You. Followed closely by The Pope song and Canvas Bags 😁
It is so great to watch people experience Minchin for the first time. This is his most 'normal' song. Check out his stuff if you even kind of liked this.
He only dresses like this for his performances. He is a gifted musician, poet, actor, linguist. He writes music for serious musicals. Has 2 children and married(?2001) a girl he met at university when he was 17yrs old. A deep, deep thinker. Best to watch (not listen) to him perform. Also must watch songs only after he talks about them first.
I love your laid back style and the fact you pay full attention to the lyrics. If this is your only Tim Minchin reaction please check out Lullaby. It shows off his hysterical comedic style and his genius with the piano and orchestration.
yes john ..... I’m soaked..........CLASSIC retort... Delve into Tin Minchin - he is a master of the story and intertwining music and lyrics and thought provoking satire
Tim Minchin did an interview about his look where he basically said that he started off kind of goofing on hair metal rockers. They flat iron their hair and have eyeliner and weird shirts and leather pants and no shoes. But now that is just what he does.
If you want to hear some of Tim Minchin have a listen to "Come home- Cardinal Pell" a song he wrote for the survivors of catholic church clerical abuse in ballarat victoria in the late 1960's and 1970's something Pell has tried to cover up for decades
I would say COME HOME CARDINAL PELL is more about something the Pope & Catholic church has tried to cover up. He just tried to avoid being tried & having to face the consequences.
Yes honey, he is wearing make-up and no shoes. It is a joke you see poking fun at egotistical rock stars. A joke made clearest in the song "Canvas Bags".
Surprised you folks didn't know about Tim Minchin. He's the best comedian performing today. He also wrote the Broadway play Matilda. He's an extremely talented musician and funny as hell. I'm guessing he spent his early adult years perfecting a craft rather than staring at youtube begging for money from strangers.

(First off, thanks for getting off your phone lol) As for his makeup; from his site FAQ: "I like wearing eye makeup cos it makes my eyes look weird / nicer / more easily seen from the audience [...] I also enjoy the theatricality of performance - not just the narrative content." Theater makeup uses contrast, hard lines, & exaggerated features to help the audience read emotion more clearly, among other things. I don't follow him regularly, but I'll always consider myself a fan of his. Also check out White Wine in the Sun (sentimental), Lullaby (funny), & Confessions (funny) if you like his style; they're some of my favorites. Thanks for making the video :)

Minchin is great, but this is not the song for introducing yourself to his stuff. It's wonderful in how it's a much deeper introspection than his usual material. Great contrast, but not opener.
This is kind of one of his “good songs” that is clever and charming but not packed with jokes and stands on its own. Other songs he has are overflowing with laugh out loud jokes (like “Inflatable you”)
Love Tim Minchin. His live shows are amazing. Would love to see you react to his "White Wine in the Sun" live. Thanks for the reaction. slayerrocks2 Tim's Australian and the verse with "my country" in the original and best versions are quite specific to Australia and the politics of the time. He references the then Prime Minister John Howard and we're on our 6th PM since then.
