@@stevegiles4549 I've watched their reactions before and came to the same conclusion--just bored and too concerned with smartphone messages, etc. to pay attention. I was about to give them another chance because I like Tim Minchin and foolishly thought perhaps the brilliance and pathos he displays in this song might break through, but alas...so I think I'll skip it. Thanks for the heads up.

@@gorillarawfare1963 As an anti-theist from Cairns, now in Port Hedland WHITE WINE IN THE SUN certainly hits & resonates. On another note, for someone so intelligent & aware & open to tackling such taboo topics as he is so well known for im waiting for a song about the difficulties & injustices facing indigenous Australians. I know he's known as a comedian but I reckon if anyone can do it & make it palatable for the masses its him.

This song isn't really meant to be one of his out and out comedy songs. He talks about the "journey" he takes his audience on throughout the show in many interviews. Tim deliberately puts these more emotional songs throughout the set to create light and shade.
My favourite of all time is probably Prejudice, or Inflatable You. Followed closely by The Pope song and Canvas Bags 😁

(First off, thanks for getting off your phone lol)
As for his makeup; from his site FAQ: "I like wearing eye makeup cos it makes my eyes look weird / nicer / more easily seen from the audience [...] I also enjoy the theatricality of performance - not just the narrative content."
Theater makeup uses contrast, hard lines, & exaggerated features to help the audience read emotion more clearly, among other things.
I don't follow him regularly, but I'll always consider myself a fan of his. Also check out White Wine in the Sun (sentimental), Lullaby (funny), & Confessions (funny) if you like his style; they're some of my favorites.

Same thing as my favorite christmas song also by him. They're just the odd ones out when it comes to comedy, but beautifull in their own way. Expecting comedy may lead you to laugh more than the song intents you to, while at the same time take it as seriously as the song wants you to.
