Sadly, when the train is going at that sort of speed, there's no way that the train can stop in time before colliding with the buffalo. This is why, in other countries, there are either speed limits in place (aimed at making the railway safer for all), barriers separating the train track from anything else, more frequent signals (which the signaller can set to danger, thus making the train stop), or an overall safer railway network. There was nothing the train driver could have done in this scenario.

Water Buffalo are not dumb animals. They were just following their herding instinct, doing what comes naturally. They were there long before the railroad put an obstacle in their path. Don't get me wrong, I'm a lifelong railfan. The unfortunate juveniles are the last to cross, following the adults single file. They had no reason to fear the horn, as they have heard it hundreds of times in their life. Their only object lesson was to overcome a minor barrier in their way. Seems to me the train driver had sufficient time to react on that very long straightaway. All rail collisions have a potential for disaster. Thankfully, the locomotive did not go on the ground after hitting quite a substantial object. Had it been an adult animal, the outcome may have been very different. Thanks for another stimulating video, Mars!
going by the shutter speed of the camera and the railroad ties, there was no speed change even well before the cows.. personally I would have floored it hahaha
Interesting how the track gauge compared to the USA is alot smaller (Metre) and railroad ties seems to be a bit more spread apart.. I still think the weight of the locomotive and even a bigger animal would have ended up in the same result.. The hook coming out of the front of the locomotive probably prevented even a single dent in the front, and probably resulted in blood splatter.. I can't see how anything is smart not realizing a rumble noise coming at them at 80mph, but then again humans in the USA have gotten run over by the new brightline in Florida 3 times within the month it started..

This is the harshest lesson of Life you will learn today, from this video. Take a look at the first cow incident, at about 02:08:45, that was a close call. Then look at the second, the fatal one. What is different? The cows in the first incident tended to cross on their own. They were scattered, they were instinctively aware they are doing something on their own, which might be forbidden, by their shepherd "god-owners". Just by being aware they are not at their normal place, and by hearing the incoming noise, they were "edgy", had fast reactions. The last managed to jump in the last second, two more stayed from the other side, didn't follow the jumping cow: just by instinctively "knowing", that they are generally, at a safe place, while the track is the place, where they are not often "allowed" to be. In the fatal incident we don't have such a thing. The last three cows, and especially the last two, did not make any effort to jump and run away, neither to get back. Why, what's the difference? They were crossing in a HERD, and they were calmly believing, in their instinct, that they are safe. They even didn;t make an effort to move, didn't show reaction of a fear from the incoming noise, anything. So deeply in the herd behaviour: "the ones in front of me crossed gently, no problem, I'm going to do the same!" If there was someone to shout at them, or if they had seen the first ones run, they might have saved themselves, the last two. But they were following blindly, calmly walking, in a false sense of security. Now, the disturbing part: humans tend to exhibit THE SAME HERD BEHAVIOUR. So, this is your lesson: be like the first cow, from about 02:08:47. Even if you go somewhere, or you follow someone, keep your eyes wide open and your ears listening 360 degrees around, and be ready to jump away from danger, and run, at any given moment.
And I've got the impression that the poor animal is a young one. Just like young people are most prone to follow stupid leaders. Some do it blindly, but the most are just obedient like they have been told to be. That's the worst part of the sad story.
)) ua-cam.com/video/4wJ6dBrYqpQ/v-deo.html (видео старое, качество так себе, но снятое того стоит !)

Wow, what a fantastic train ride....! I really enjoyed this cab view of the ride. The gradual acceleration at the start and the sensation of speed and the terrific scenery. Vietnam is a beautiful place and I've always had a great appreciation for the Vietnamese people. They are really are wonderful people.
Sorry for the farmer's animals killed at 2:15:20 . Stopped to inspect the train. 2:24:00 resume travel. The driver should use binoculars to spot animals ahead earlier and slow the train.
Or even better, upgrade the track infrastructure. In Vietnam there are only signals on the approach to stations and junctions (namely because it is single track). In the UK they have to have signals spaced every certain distance. This is better because if there is an obstruction, the signaller can immediately put the signal to red (danger/stop) until the obstruction is clear. The driver would then see a yellow (caution) signal on the approach, and would have to stop in time for the red. Once the obstruction is clear, the signals can then be set back to green (proceed). Yes, the train driver could have slammed on the brakes at the first sighting of the buffalo, or ideally ran slower after the first near-miss (knowing there could be obstacles ahead), but the time it takes for a train to slow down and stop would have still resulted in a collision even if the emergency brakes had been applied at the first sighting of the buffalo.

I'm guessing Buffalo steaks were on the menu that day for some lucky farmer? It was hard to watch though.

I think buffaloes are less smarter and slower than cows/Oxen. I don't know.
And I've got the impression that the poor animal is a young one. Just like young people are most prone to follow stupid leaders. Some do it blindly, but the most are just obedient like they have been told to be. That's the worst part of the sad story.

2:15:26 😩..... R.I.P
I was working as a shepherd for some time in past, for me that was very painful moment to watch, poor animals. That was clearly shepherd's fault.
Train driver is such a nice person he even stopped the train. Many others wouldn't in his place.

Mars Hartdegen: =
Mars Hartdegen: =

I have a serious railroad question at 2:11:09 when he approaches the small bridge, it looks as if there is a switching track in the middle of the bridge; what would be this purpose?
the purpose of those rail at to prevent dragging equipment from ripping the ties up while over a void.

Mars Hartdegen posted. How fast is the train going there? I see it as above 80km/h...! Nice video 👍👍
About 60km/h lol
Looked a bit faster from that, from what I could see. I would guess 80km/h - 100km/h?

Wow, what a fantastic train ride....! I really enjoyed this cab view of the ride. The gradual acceleration at the start and the sensation of speed and the terrific scenery.

R.I.P to the animals that got crashed by the train
So sad 😢😢.
😄
