@@JasonYadlovski Jason: I just tried to use the dynamics (limiter) on more than one clip, and was confused on how to select which clip that I wanted to "operate" the dynamics on. On the first clip, it seemed very straight forward, but on the 2nd or 3rd clip it seemed less straight forward. It's probably something really simple, but on DV17, sometimes the control design assumes facts not in evidence, and one ends up guessing how to proceed. This is no doubt only a problem for software as capable and powerful as Blackmagic DV17. Anyway thanks for your videos. You take really complex controls and make getting results crystal clear. Your videos are always my "go to" when I want to learn something about DV17 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! regards, Dan
Hey Dan - so when you’re using the dynamics, they apply to the entire track, not a single clip. So you only have to do it once and it applies to every clip within that track. We don’t have the option to use dynamics only on a single clip unless you put that clip in a track by itself. Does that make sense?
@@JasonYadlovski Jason: OK, got it. Crystal clear as usual. DV17 dynamics apply to the entire track, not just one selected(highlighted) clip. Yes, it makes sense, and thank you for your lighting fast reply. Of course the ultimate flexibility would be if the dynamics could be set for each individual clip, but really, it's not much of an issue for me to have the Track level dynamics control. I guess if a person really needed to have a different dynamics setting for two different clips, there's nothing saying that you couldn't just open up another track, and put your "other" clip over on that track. Don't know how many audio tracks DV17 supports, but I know I personally have had 5 tracks operating on a single video before, and it showed no sign of that being the upper limit. Again, thanks Jason !! You are really THE best at DV17 tutorial videos !!!
@@JasonYadlovski Heh, just finished watching actually. I'm watching while working from home and have to stop videos to take calls at times for work. Great video. Liked.
Thanks! So normalization will essential adjust the entire clip in one shot so that the clip meets the normalization level you set. For example, if you normalize Peak volume to -9db, then the clip would auto adjust the volume so that the max/peak levels are -9db and everything else will move accordingly. Compression is a bit more dynamic on how it works. You set a threshold or level where you want it to start. For example -20db. Then you compress or reduce any signal over -20db by the ratio you select - for dialogue typically 2:1 or 2.5:1. This means for every 2.5 db of volume over the -20db threshold, the volume will only increased by 1db. So it's compression the audio above a certain level you set. Compression also allows you to make quite parts louder and louder parts a little quieter, where as normalization only sets on level and everything moves accordingly. So quite parts wills till be quiet. Hope this help a bit!
@@JasonYadlovski Yes now it's clear, thank you really much! But what if I adjust the volume of the clip in the mixer until I reach the point I want my peaks to be, instead of the normalization?
If you adjust the peaks to where you want, your doing the same thing as peak normalization. Compression allows for more consistent audio by allowing you to boost the quite parts while limiting (compressing) the loud parts.
Hey Jason! I don't know if you're familiar with OBS or not, but I use this to record/stream my videos and set some of these dynamics on there (compression, limiter, etc.). When I put this in davinci resolve do I want to use these dynamics again? The quality of the audio usually sounds pretty good, only thing is the LUFS can be a bit low.
Hey! If you are happy with the results from OBS, then you are probably good to go. I would say that resolves tools are probably better, but if OBS is getting the job done for you that’s ok.
Your videos are awesome. One question: when I apply some of your (awesome) suggestions, my computer slows down to the point that I have to wait several seconds before I can actually hear a sound after I play. It's incredibly slow. Any suggestions?
The expander and Gate are going to reduce the level (volume) of audio below a certain DB level (threshold) that you set. It can either completely cut off the audio using the Gate, or just reduce the levels (based on your settings) using the expander. For example, the Gate and Exapander will help reduce the noise between words when speaking or if there is some sort of background noise below a certain DB level. The Noise Reduction included in Resolve works a little different and in my opinion it really isn't that good. I really don't use it because I'm not usually satisfied w/ the results, but it try to isolate dialogue/vocals and eliminate other background noise. In reality, instead of the noise reduction effect, I'd use Voice Isolation if you have the studio version or I'd use something like Waves Clarity VX. I hope this helps a bit, let m know if you have more questions!
At 13:30 your said "A gate allows you to set a point, and then below that point you can lower the volume as much as you want." Isn't that what an expander does?
Yes the expander does the same but with less adjustment options. I’d use the expander to lower the volume, I’d use a gate to cut the sound out (like background noise).
Great video and channel. Thanks for the content. I recently switched from PP to Resolve and i'm loving it. Your content helped me a lot to understand the differences and all, especially in the audio department. I have one question, a little off topic, how are you zooming in on a part of the screen and highlighting, greying out other part of the screen while explaining?
Thanks! Glad my vids are able to help you out! To zoom in on the screen, I do that in my screen recording software - Screenflow for Mac. I've got a preset in there I can just hit and it creates that zoom in effect. Great software if you are on Mac, but its not available for PC I don't think. Thank you for watching!
How do you RAISE the level of low-volume voices? I'm working on a panel in which some speakers are super loud and I can fix that with a compressor, but how do I raise the voices of the panelists whose microphones are very low?
You can try the new dialogue leveler if you have Studio. If the voices are all in the same track, use the makeup slider in the dynamics panel to make the quite voices louder while using the compressor to make the loud voices quieter. If the quite voices are in their own track, use the volume slider in the inspector or the compressor/makeup in dynamics. I’f you use any effects that have gain, you can also boost the levels there.
Hi Miguel! Doing great here, hope you are well too! Yes you can modify individual clips in the Fairlight tab, just select the clip and use the inspector to make adjustments. You can also add effects to individual clips by opening the effects library and dragging/dropping an effect onto a clip. Unfortunately you can't use the dynamics on a single clip, that has to be on a track level. Hope this helps!
There is definitely a need for a video on bus assign, sending/outing to sidebus etc. What is missing in this video is explaination how to make dynamics panel to listen to specific track or bus.
Hi! Thanks for checking out the video! I’ll add that idea to my list of videos to make. Here’s a video on audio ducking - I show how to use the send/listen buttons in the dynamics to have one channel to listen to another channel. I think it might help you out. ua-cam.com/video/dw88MGM9w0o/v-deo.html
Funny you mention that, I don't get cracking in my yeti, but yesterday I was trying to record directly into resolve and I was getting some cracking. It was because Resolve was set to 48,000 rate and the mic was at 96,000. Once I matched them up, it was good to go. Maybe look into that...🤔
@@JasonYadlovski Thanks a bunch for the tip Jason, I will definitely make sure that my settings match. Keep up the good work with your to-the-point videos!
What is the opposite of an expander? I tend to talk really quiet and then get really loud. So I turn on the compressor to control the loud parts, but then I have to manually increase the volume of all the parts that are too quiet. Is there something that will automatically increase the volume of anything that's below a certain dB?
Hi! Probably the best, but must time consuming thing to do is use keyframes to keyframe the quiet parts louder. Or make cuts around the quiet parts, move them to a new track and work with them there. If you don't want to do that, I'd boost the makeup, enough so that the low parts come across well, then apply the compressor and lower the threshold to compensate. Not sure it it would work, but that's where I'd start.

Hello Jason. I'm really new into Davinci and your videos are helping a lot! Thank you! I'm trying to find some option or workflow to animate the adio effects. For example, I'm trying to remap the speed of the audio with keyframes to simulate how the sound gets slower as it goes away from the viewer. Another example is to keyframe the reverb to make the transition from one kind of environment to another. Is this possible? Thank you again for your great videos!
Hi! Thanks so much for checking on videos, I’m glad to hear that they’re helpful! Resolve is awesome but there’s so much to learn. So in order to have the effects change over time, I think you have to work with the automation tools. I don’t have a video on it yet but I will be working on one in the near future.
Does DaVinci Resolve not have a dynamic processing option? This video’s great, but I’m just looking to “process” the audio like in Adobe Audition. Raise the valleys, lower the peaks, create a more unified sound. Sort an auditory version of ‘best fit line’. That way, if I raise the volume, it doesn’t overmodulate or even worse cut off peaks.
I’ve never used adobe audition before, but if you’re talking about something like dynamic EQ, it doesn’t have that built-in. But if you had a plug-in, you can run any audio plug-ins that you have right inside of fairlight. I’ve been using the F6 waves plug-in lately, are you talking about something similar to that?
Thanks. I'm trying to move from Premiere Pro to Resolve. I use the dynamics effect in PP, but I can apply it to the clip instead of the track. I generally edit using as few layers as I can. Is it possible to apply such adjustments to the clip, or am I just doing it wrong? I also ordered studio with the speed editor, and someday it may even ship. I use the Contour Shuttle Pro 2 currently.
You’re welcome! Yes, you can apply to a specific clip if you’d like. Just open your FX library, go to the audio FX, click on the one you want and drag it and drop it on top of the clip you wanna apply it to. Then you should have the effect on just that clip. That’s awesome that you got the speed editor, it looks pretty cool. The studio version is awesome since it uses a lot of GPU power versus the free version uses only CPU power. Plus you get some extra features and effects and what not. Best of luck making the transition, I’ve talked with a lot of people who have done it and it seems to work out well. Thanks for watching!
Hi! Hold is used when applying dynamics. It tells Resolve how long to keep the compressor/gate/limiter active after it is no longer needed. For example if you are speaking and take a breath, with zero hold, the effect will turn off and then turn back on when you are speaking. If you had the hold set for 1/2 a second for example, the effect would stay on while you take a breath because it's holding it for a length of time you specify. Does that make sense? Hope this helps!
Hey Jason! I have a problem with clip selecting. This function "select clips forward on this track" is not working. The "all clips" option is working properly. I have no what the problem can be.
Maybe the shortcut got messed up? I'd check under keyboard customizations and see if it's still there. If you are using menu for that feature, I don't know. Make sure Resolve is up to date.
Just a question, I've been told that voice should be mostly around -10dB and -20 dB. But sometimes there're peaks that go above -5dB. Should I limit them with the threshold if there are too many to solve them manually (with the inspector and softening that peak isolated)? Thanks, Jason.
Hi Jordi, thanks for checking out the video! Generally I set my levels to between -8db and -15bd. You don’t need a limiter, but the compressor can help. Here’s a video I did on how to set your audio levels, maybe it will help you. ua-cam.com/video/UCmueEJGm4A/v-deo.html
Hi.. I’m wondering if you could give me suggestions why in mixture I not get dynamic or other options? Even not get no input when tried for recording...
Hi! My guess is that you are not in the fairlight tab. Jump into the musical notes tab along the bottom of the screen to get to Fairlight. Open the mixer in Fairlight and you should see it all.
@@JasonYadlovski in fairlight just clicked the option meters and got the expanded form of mixer... there is inputs effects insert eq pan ...but still not finding dynamic 🙁

Since Resolve 14 I've noticed that whenever in Fairlight I apply the equalizer settings you recommend in your previous video, it doesn't save it, (in multicam I click on the audio I want fixed, but I click away and come back and it's as if I never EQd, what am I doing wrong?
@@JasonYadlovski on multicam edits this happens. The question is am I supposed to do EQ etc on the track selected on the timeline (which could be multiple selections throughout a multicam - Or - should EQ be done after you “open in timeline” the multicam individual clips then edit those individually? If it’s the individual clips I will tell you that it never remembers the EQ I do, when I come Back to the edit it doesn’t show up. Also it’s confusing that when you click Equalization in Fairlight, It seems to be a separate thing then clicking on the one in inspector. If I was to use just my intuition I would want to turn on the equalization in inspector if I’m doing any equalization in fairlight. I’ll try to send a short video here so you can see what I’m talking about
I understand it can be confusing. Just to clarify the difference between the EQ in the inspector and the EQ in Fairlight in the mixer - The EQ in the inspector is a more basic EQ and only applied to individual clips. The EQ in the mixer in fairlight is has more points to adjust and is applied to the entire track. For me, when I make multicam clips, I have 1 consistent audio source inside the multicam clip, so I just use the Fairlight EQ to apply EQ to the entire track in my normal timeline. In general I use the Fairlight EQ for the entire track. I'd only use the inspector EQ on a certain clip if that clip needed some additional EQ that I could not accomplish with the Fairlight EQ. Here's a whole video on EQ if you are interested: ua-cam.com/video/5Rs1XRQSlAM/v-deo.html
Are you able to record 1-2 tracks of audio with very low latency with EQ and compression while monitoring the effects real-time? I'm downloading 17 now to see because I couldn't figure out how to accomplish low latency monitoring in 16. I'm not doing anything complicated. A lot of people are hollering that this is because of a lack of ASIO support. I typically use ASIO in Reaper to record music and I can record up to 30 tracks with a whole slew of VSTs running. I was hoping software as advanced as this could do somewhat close to the same without forcing me to buy a $995 audio "accelerator." I already spent $800 on an audio interface (Focusrite Clarett 8pre USB).
Hey man, I'm not really sure if it can do what you're saying. Might take a little poking around the free version to see if it will work. Sorry I don't have an answer for you on this one. Thanks for watching!
I don’t think I set the limiter to -29, where did I say that in the video? I would have to go double check. When working with dynamics you want to set your threshold lower in order to allow for audio ducking if you’re using that feature or keep the threshold lower so that you get the amount of compression that you want.
Got ya. The easiest way is to build a static chart however you want, then bring it into Resolve and just use a mask with keyframes in the color tab to reveal it as you speak.
@@JasonYadlovski If I scroll over where it says (No Input) first down is EQ next is Pan and last is Group. So yeah they must have ditched it on the free version. Bummer.
A long Hold on a Limiter seems redundant to me.... if the threshold is no longer being exceeded then there is nothing to limit so why hold the limiter?
Hi! The hold is important when for example if you have a little bit of space two points that need to be limited. I think it just helps the effect be smoother instead of turning off right away. But you may not always need the hold too. Depends on your audio. Thanks for watching!
Hi! First make sure you’re in the fairlight page. Next, open the mixer and if you do not see dynamics there, try scroll in with your mouse wheel above the faders. If you still don’t see it, click on the three dots in the top right hand corner of the mixer and make sure you have dynamics checked on. You should see it then. Hope this helps!
If you’re trying to remove music from a track that also has dialogue in it, there’s a good chance you’re not gonna be able to do that in DaVinci Resolve. At least not in a way that you’d wanna to use just a dialogue. You probably need something more advanced like isotope.
Curious if anyone can answer this for me. If you're turning up the Ratio on the Compressor, is it effectively approaching the same function as just using the Limiter or is the end result qualitatively different? Thanks! :)
If you have the ratio cranked all the way up, it could be like a limiter but it’s really just reducing the peaks by whatever the ratio is set to. It’s not a hard limiter where it stops the audio at a certain threshold.
@@JasonYadlovski Thx man! For all the helpful vids. Your video on the Collage Effect got me started learning video editing when I had an idea for a type of video but no experience in video editing.

Check around your screen, sometimes it will sit behind a Davinci Resolve window. If you still don’t see it maybe give it a restart and see if it’ll pop up then.
4:31 ... Respectfully, your description of the limiter in this particular panel is incorrect. Allow me to share incredibly helpful info here. The limiter in this panel is NOT a "hard" limiter, that is, it does not set a hard ceiling above which no signal can pass. This limiter is really just the compressor in drag ... with a high ratio. If you try to use this to set a hard limit, say to meet YT standards, you are going to be endlessly confused and frustrated. BUT, if you click on EFFECTS > DYNAMICS > LIMITER, there you will find a simple hard limiter. I do all of my NR, EQ, compression, etc., and then do this hard limit last (by just setting it to, say, -1db). It took me so $%&! long to figure that out ;-)
That would be great if they incorporated Reaper. I use that to record live music when I mix. We will have to wait and see what comes! Thanks for watching!

You are really THE best at DV17 tutorial videos !!!
nice video! exactly what i was looking for
Glad I could help!
Thanks again. Looking forward to giving this a try.

I love the irony of watching a video about dynamics and immediately being blasted by the loud intro music. :-P
Yeah man. 👍😁 thanks for watching!
@@JasonYadlovski Heh, just finished watching actually. I'm watching while working from home and have to stop videos to take calls at times for work. Great video. Liked.
Thanks man, I appreciate it. 😁👍
Hey great video, definitely the best for dynamics in Davinci. But I don't really get the difference between compression and normalization.. Thanks.
Thanks! I'd try some of the things I mention here: ua-cam.com/video/XN33jb5_qWA/v-deo.html to see if it helps playback.
Thanks!!!

Could you say more about the difference between noise reduction and the expander / gate? Am I missing something or do they give equivalent effects?
@@JasonYadlovski Thanks Jason, I have been using the noise reduction but maybe I should try the gate / expander
It’s worth a try, depending on the noise you want to remove. 👍
Thank you very much

do you plan on doing a vid about fusion in davinci 17 they have some new features as well like the shape nodes
I may do one about fusion but I’m not sure. Fusion really bogs down my computer, time for computer upgrade. 😁
@@JasonYadlovski thanks for the reply. OH sucks, i use PC. I'll try something in OBS
Hey Jason!
Hope you are doing great!
I'm just wondering if I can modify single audio clips in the tab fairlight.
Thanks for everything you share!
forgot to mention, without adding any other track
Great tutorial. thanks! One aside question. What transition did you use for the fliping clip in the back of the current one at the end of the video?
Thanks! I think it was just a 'slide left' transition that comes in DaVinci Resolve. Thanks for watching!
Hi Jason. Do you ever get crackling problems with your Blue Yeti microphone?
Funny you mention that, I don't get cracking in my yeti, but yesterday I was trying to record directly into resolve and I was getting some cracking. It was because Resolve was set to 48,000 rate and the mic was at 96,000. Once I matched them up, it was good to go. Maybe look into that...🤔
@@JasonYadlovski Thanks a bunch for the tip Jason, I will definitely make sure that my settings match. Keep up the good work with your to-the-point videos!
Will do!
Thank you :-) Always good to get back to basics ;-) Ciaooo JF
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching! 👍😁
@@JasonYadlovski Thanks for the response Jason! I'll take a look on the Automation tools. Looking forward for your video on that field!
Thanks.

Is there a way to apply a sidechain to a third-party plugin, like the Fabfilter Pro Q3 in DaVinci Resolve? Cheers :)
Sure, you can do it. You can also just send channels to a bus, then apply the plugin to the bus.
@@JasonYadlovski It would be great if you made a video about sidechaining and showed us how to do it! :)))
I couldn't help myself - I've ordered one of those sweet Speed Editors.
Awesome man, let us know how it is. 👍😁💯
In what circumstance would you use hold?
Try clicking the 3 dots at the top right of the mixer. That will give you options to turn things on. I’m assuming your in DR17.

Since Resolve 14 I've noticed that whenever in Fairlight I apply the equalizer settings you recommend in your previous video, it doesn't save it, (in multicam I click on the audio I want fixed, but I click away and come back and it's as if I never EQd, what am I doing wrong?
Hi! that's strange, I haven't seen that before. Maybe try a new project? It should hold the changes for you. 🤔
Thanks! In another vid you said the level should be between -20 to -15, so why set the limiter to -29?
I don’t think I set the limiter to -29, where did I say that in the video? I would have to go double check. When working with dynamics you want to set your threshold lower in order to allow for audio ducking if you’re using that feature or keep the threshold lower so that you get the amount of compression that you want.
@@JasonYadlovski at 5:29, but maybe you were just doing that for demo purposes?
Please teach us how to create a text flowchart diagram in Davinci Resolve. I want to record a lecture with flowcharts description.
Animated or static that just reveals? You can make it in fusion with background nodes, text and rectangles.
@@JasonYadlovski I would like the text to reveal row by row as I speak about it in a voiceover.
Got ya. The easiest way is to build a static chart however you want, then bring it into Resolve and just use a mask with keyframes in the color tab to reveal it as you speak.
Is the Dynamics panel only on the Studio version or also in the free version?
It used to be in the free version too. I think it still is in the fairlight tab.

@@JasonYadlovski Dear bro,

A long Hold on a Limiter seems redundant to me.... if the threshold is no longer being exceeded then there is nothing to limit so why hold the limiter?
Hi! The hold is important when for example if you have a little bit of space two points that need to be limited. I think it just helps the effect be smoother instead of turning off right away. But you may not always need the hold too. Depends on your audio. Thanks for watching!

@@JasonYadlovski I'm looking to remove a score track from a film clip. Do you recommend using Mixer/Dynamics/Equalizer for this?
