• DOCUSERIES: Across Lab...
At 1.4 million km², the Labrador Peninsula is one of the last great wilderness areas on the planet. In 2018 I set a goal to cross its width by canoe.
From the Labrador Sea to Hudson Bay it was an estimated 1700 kilometre journey that would last 83 days.
With only my dog Saku, I would travel, up and down remote rivers, across enormous lakes, and over portages that were littered with both beauty and danger.
We would witness and camp in wilderness that few, if any, have ever seen and rewind back to a time when life was simpler.
Along the way, I filmed our experiences. Now, in a docuseries format, we bring it to life for you, right here on UA-cam.

I enjoy these quite a bit and I do share them
From northern Maine where I am
Loved it ....THANK YOU✌️👍🇺🇸
Amazing footage brother !! You should have a million subscribers. I gotta know your opinion on eating them mergansers, did they taste fishy at all after you stewed em?
Great series mate looking forward to you're next adventure 👍🇬🇧
This is by far the best series I have ever watched on youtube. The amount of effort that was put into this is amazing. It is personal and professional. THANK YOU SO MUCH for this series
You summed up our Explorer quite well Cole. This is epic!!!
me too incredible
Second that !!
Him And Jim Baird and his dog is worth watching too
I have to agree. It was the best to watch. I felt like we were taken along on the journey as well and not just shown 🤗
For someone I’ve never met personally, I sure feel proud of you. Beyond epic sir. No words other than you’ll never be matched sir. Incredible incredible incredible 👍👍👍
Chuck Porter - Everything Outdoors it certainly is an awesome accomplishment and you are right no one will ever match that journey
@@markball2048 Well...Norwegian adventurer Lars Monsen (one of Justin's inspirations actually) crossed the entire country, starting in Kaktovik, Alaska and ending up on the east coast after 2 years and 9 months in the wilderness. That trip was well documented and was sent as a 6 part series on national television. Not taking anything away from Justin's accomplishment of course.
We were happy to have our boys back! 🥰
Welcome Miss Heather good to see here my girl💞
My wife, Pam seconds that:)
I was wondering where you were! 🙂
Thank you Heather for lending them both to us for this incredible journey.
I am sure you were! 😉🇨🇦
BEST paddling adventure series ever! Everything is right on: Your skill, the adventure, the dog, the filming, the music! It has it all. What I like most is how you show the reality of a paddling trip, compared to frou-frou portrayals of perfectly chic outdoorsmen in fashionable apparel staring out at a sweeping horizon. Thank you!
You’re one amazing Son and Saku one amazing dog !! Best on You Tube 🔥🛶🏕
Proud mam👍 respect from England
You have an awesome son. He is living my dream.
I can’t imagine there are many people alive today who have done what you did on this trip. Good series. Looking forward to anything you post next.
And ... with Saku no less.
Jesus..you deserve a Medal for Perseverance, my son!! One hell of an adventure.
A stashed canoe could mean "stay tuned folks". Thanks Justin for sharing. That was one hell of an undertaking. Stay safe.
My thoughts exactly!!
Maybe the next will be across Quebec? Oh and pick up the canoe in the process?
This footage is from 2018... unsure what’s next tbh
Yup
I nearly cried when you realized you couldn't continue. Just ordered your book too. Can't wait to read it. Really enjoyed the series and thanks for sharing your adventures.
Zera Holladay spoiler alert!
THERES A BOOK?! can you provide the name please? Id love to take a look.
@@briani7858 where to buy is listed in the write up to the left.
True
I watch some other UA-camrs who claim to be survivalists, or at least hard-core outdoorsmen, then I watch you. Justin my man, you are in a class of your own.
That was an intensely profound last episode man... The emotions were off the charts. I can't imagine how it must of felt those last few days and especially loading that chopper and taking flight out.
Outstanding series! Hands down, YOU ARE A GOD DAMN MACHINE!
Well bro, I've looked forward to the release of each installment, never disappointed.Sorry it has ended and as another viewer said "Thanks for taking us along" with you and Saku. Now I'm 70 and unable to have a go anymore but every paddle stroke, the snowstorms, hail, breaking and carrying on arduous portages far from the crowd brings back cherished memories. Carry on Justin!
Thanks Mike we're happy to have you ! All the best
This is the first time I’ve ever commented on a UA-cam video, but I just had to say how much I have enjoyed this series, and all of your other videos I’ve watched so far. Great cinematography, relaxing music, and a good doggo. You have a great personality and I admire your adventurous spirit and endurance. Can’t wait for the next adventure!
Congrats on your first comment Andy! Commenting, even a couple of words, really helps UA-cam content creators get higher up in the algorithm which means the video will show up in more peoples recommended videos. Don't know if you've watched Jim Baird's channel but he does epic adventure trips in Canada as well. Cheers.
Thanks Andy!
Awsm comment Andy keep them coming it helps build Justin's channel.
True
This must be my first comment ever on youtube but I had to say it. Playing with Saku around 3.25 is the most wholesome thing I've ever seen. Such an amazing dog.
I keep repeating myself, this is an excellent series, a real adventure into the wild.
I love love love watching Saku (and you too of course) adventuring across the Labrador wild. Such an awesome bond between the two of you. Very rare.
The Northern Scavenger boys: watch this epic adventure.
Justin: hold my beer.
They are both good, I wouldn't dwell too much on that train of thought.
This is such a good series. Honestly inspired. I just want to go fishing all the time now.
As someone who has paddled approximately 2000 mi. of open Pacific coastline (over several years), hiked the Pacific Crest (weathered out near the end), and cycled from Oregon to St John's Newfoundland, I know a bit about what you went through... HUGE RESPECT to you!!!
What an adventure my man!! Thanks for bringing us along!
DETROIT MICHIGAN WELDER APPRECIATES THE RIDE...RESPECTIVELY...AND WHAT AN AMAZING COMPANION...
What's up Deeetrrroit????!!!!! Also in the area...
Saturday just got a whole lot better. Thanks bud👍🏻
..Have enjoyed your great adventure , thanks for taking me along for the trek..you are one tough and rugged s.o.b..lol..keep on exploring and keep safe..
As someone who's solo wilderness adventures never go the way I imagine I'd just like to say that natures first lesson is humility. It's also nature's only lesson. Thanks for being awesome and coming back safe Justin.
I have just loved following this (and several of your other) journeys. You appreciate the beauty no matter how difficult the passage. Labrador appears as a harsh, merciless wasteland to many, but like you, I also see the independent beauty and "rightness" of its character. Thank you.
Crazy looking thumbnail man. Looking forward to watching
I just binge watched the entire series. I don't even know what to say. This is beyond anything that I have seen on UA-cam. Such beautiful scenery and such an adventure!
Thanks a lot more to come! All the best
I’m binging on it all lol so addictive
Sad to see the adventure “End” a little prematurely. You have to respect Mother Nature, she’s a force not to be taken lightly. The call of the wilderness and the desire to complete this trip must be strong. Looking forward to updates and further postings. Going to order the book now, to see what else we can learn from you and Saku. All the best Justin. Keep them coming my friend, you have a gift!
It's not about the destination, it's about the journey and memories made while doing it!!
Awesome trip. A real inspiration to myself and my wife when we take our much less intense trip in Minnesota, USA, this summer. It's also great to see the devotion you and Saku have to each other.
You my friend are a legend! I will never look at my solo trips trough Algonquin the same way again lol. Cheers!
From sunny cornwall, UK- that doesn’t look fun lol. Great series man
I had such a rough week I completely forgot! Thanks Doc,just the prescription needed to cure my ills!
You are no ordinary dude my friend. After just watching this episode ,I was so tired and sweating so much I had to take a shower.lol!!!I can just imagine the feeling of accomplishment at the end of it all!!!
Don't usually comment on videos but thank you for making something that easily beats any full budget TV programme! Extremely interesting and personal
This is a treat today, it's my birthday and this is a present i will be watching later, keep the videos comming ,great work young feller.
Happy birthday 🎁
Good stuff! Thank you for taking the time and making the considerable extra effort to bring us along with you. We appreciate it! Cheers from Maine!
Just finished the series. Unbelievable and you made the right decision toward the end.
All I can say is awesome:)
When you landed home it was priceless.
My wife and son, Joshua really enjoyed the last episode.
Stay safe:)
You are a tank! Upriver lining, bushwhacking portages, rain, wind, blinding horizontal snow, low rations , injuries and broken gear and so on...” It’s all good!” This is hard core tripping! Congratulations. I’ll be happy to provide provisions at your re supply points. Just don’t ask me to come along!
G'day Justin, mate I love this series, you have opened my eyes up to this beautiful country. I'm a wilderness Plein Air (done on location) oil painting artist and paint the remote areas of Outback Australia. So different to your land! You're a true explorer and I love that! Cheers Buddy :)
just astonishing - incredible, wonderful series! greets from germany!
An amazing trip. I'm in Minnesota and once the weather starts like that it's not going away. Thank you for taking us along. Loved every minute of it.
Oh boy...can't wait to get home from work and watch the series finale and have a couple cold ones....👍✌️🇺🇸
What a joy to have a friend like Sacu to share your adventures.
Another epic adventure comes to an end. I loved every minute of it. I'm happy to see you made the smart choice to stop when you did. To continue on would have been a foolish and dangerous decision. I will now wait impatiently for your next adventure to begin. Take care, Justin! Thank you so much for sharing your adventures with us!
That was one inspiring adventure, me and my young grandson love watching these
my husband and soulmate died this week. your videos are saving me from my grief. thank you.
I loved it. wise decision there, you did great! Saku also did great. you both strong.
I have watched 4 of your adventures so far Justin, absolutely amazing. Your Man and Dog book should be arriving next month for some excellent reading too. Looking forward to your continuing adventures. Say hello to Saku for me.
Sad to see the adventure end but an awesome journey, huge thanks for the effort that went into sharing it with us! Can't wait for the next :-)
I found the canoe retrieval first, went back and watched the adventure! What a journey, be proud, very few have done what you and Saku have. I enjoyed every second! A little surreal being back in civilization I would imagine after that long. Betting the sweetheart was more than ready for you two to come home!
Thank you for taking all the extra effort to film, that’s an whole lot of extra work, walking, paddling so we can join in. Much appreciated!
Exceptional series so far. I admire your spirit, as well as the non existence of ego. Thank you.
Awesome series, so sad to see it end! Oh, well, we will still have the reruns. Thanks Justin 👍😊.
Cole just said it perfect. I have watched many service, but this series has been wonderful. Justin, we appreciate all of the effort you have put into each episode. Thank you.
From a weekend downriver guy all I can do is bow in your direction. And seeing Saku with that peanut butter jar just transported me back 50 years to my childhood dog Julie. Thanks man!
Knowing when to throw in the towel is a hard one. A careless man will take it to the point where he pushes past the signs and ends up hurting himself and creating an emergency. A truly experienced bush man listens, watches, and understands that desire and determination are secondary to survival and that mother nature will not wain to either. It takes discipline to make the right choice. Thanks Justin! Great series! I look forward to more...
Justin, I thoroughly enjoyed this epic trip. I did several canoe trips 40 years ago in my 20's, nothing compared to this trip, but I can relate to many of the situations you encountered, wind, cold, bugs, etc. I look forward to your future adventures. Cheers!
Great job man. Really enjoyed it. I could see how disappointed you were with having to end it, but like you said it was the safe decision
Outstanding scenery and you are one tough dude to make it as far as you did solo. Saku rocks!
man your journey was epic, you hit the wall and came out safely and thanks so much for sharing your trip, not many people can say they did what you did, Jason buddy simply amazing
sorry I meant Justin, I was just so hyped
Gutted for you! But thanks for taking us along. I love watching the two of you work through it, you’re a tough team. Kia Kaha (stand strong) from NZ 🇳🇿
Great series, I hope you get the chance to go back some day and pick up where you left off! Keep doing what your love!
Just a hint ... the canoe was left behind!
Everything they said.
Thanks for the content.
You are a modern day adventurer. Lived in Newfoundland for 8 years and certainly know the beauty and ruggedness. Thank you for sharing your amazing adventures.
Well done! And great job reading the signs and pulling the pin at the right time.
I greatly admire your stamina a wherewithal. I have solo’d but not nearly as far as you. Group trips with 6 guys and three canoes going from James Bay to Lac Lacroix was arduous but at least camp duties were shared amongst 6 guys. I love your videos and wish you back winds and flat waters.
freaking awesome man! fantastic series you two pulled off quite the trek , not many would have the strength or the endurance. i think it far from all over
You my friend are one tough human being. I'm not going to question your sanity or judgement going on a trip like that( mostly up river) solo, continuing when most would have packed it in and having to take care of a dog. I will have a whiskey in your honor and wish you the best. I have really enjoyed your trip. Thanks.
Autumn is my fav time of the year too.
Fall color, crisp cool air, warm sun and a hot campfire.
Doesn’t get any better.
Great series of videos.
Great Adventure my friend!! Sad to see the end. Im sure getting home was bittersweet for you.
Soooo whats next?? Lol
Thanks Bill, much more to come buddy stay tuned
As a Finn I have to ask whether Saku's name was inspired by the longtime Montreal Canadiens captain Saku Koivu? Don't come across that name outside of Finland a lot!
You know it was!
I am inspired by what a single man can achieve. You have my respect.
born and raised in Wabush Labrador it is great to see someone respect as well as show off the beauty of the land, not only for those who have not seen it, but to re-affirm what i loved about it and perhaps did not take time to appreciate , thank you
What an insane looking thumbnail. Been waiting for this one but sad to see this go. Looking forward for more videos from you Justin, as always! :) Give Saku a scratch for me wont ya!
Well Justin that wasn't the ending i was expecting, in hindsight should you have started your expedition earlier ? or was you really unlucky with the onset of an early winter ?......... brilliant series though pal , and a great achievement.
Thanks for taking the hard road. I'm 59 , and you have taken me places I can't go. I feel like I'm right there with you.
Thank you for taking us along on your adventure Justin & Saku.
Thankyou for such an enjoyable series, love every moment! You've inspired me to get out camping more in the Aussie winter (which tbh now looks very tame compared to your trips).
Would love to know what sort of dog is saku?
thorn burg I believe Justin said in another series that Saku is a Cape Shore Water dog?
@@garysams8615 or a black labrador retriver
He is a cape shore water dog.
I paddle the canoe backwards when she is getting light
Man that must have been so surreal going into your house after 80+ days in the wild. That was an incredible and inspirational series, glad you and Saku made it out in one piece.
Saki deserves to be pops to a big herd of puppies someday and to pass along his wild wisdom.
Justin you're an inspiration mate, thank you so much for creating this incredible series. I felt like I lived and breathed it with you even though Im sure we have seen the smallest sliver of the experience that only you and Saku will ever know. "No man ever paddles the same river twice for it is not the same river and he is not the same man".
I battle my way through a crazy storm over 5 different mountain passes last night in the big truck. Gale force winds; biblical rain, thunder and lightning on a Viking sort of level. Groceries delivered. Hopefully my friends in Grand Forks B.C. Haven’t flooded. State of emergency with the high water then 100mm of rain with this wicked storm... And here my new found Canadian hero is out doing it with Saku in a canoe. I raise a cold pint and give ya a tip of the hat!!!!! Standing ovation every episode. Get home safe. Can’t wait for my next instalment lol. Thank you and cheers🇨🇦👍🏻🍺🍺🍺🇨🇦
Thanks Jason we're happy to have you along man! 🍻
What a trip. Thanks there’s nothing better even on tv.
Justin you are a machine. You just keep going no matter what lies ahead. Hats off to you my man.
I've stumbled onto UA-cam Gold! Here in Norway, we have Lars Monsen. He's crossed Canada in winter with a dogsled, several rounds in the Iditarod, and countless other adventures, mostly alone, sometimes with his brother and a friend. I've watched it all, and loved it. He started out like this, then got picked up by NRK, our national TV network, and the rest is history. The effort behind this, planning, filming, not to mention financing is off the charts. Add to that an affable, no nonsense attitude, tons of experience and knowledge, well trained dog? Good to see you pulled the plug when Mother Nature really smacked you down. Thank you for making content like this!! May your travels be long, enjoyable(for you and us), and well documented.
You are the best. Period.
Oh Justin thank you so much I just love your videos so sorry you couldn't finish but I'm so happy you took us along. God bless you . I'm a mom and all I can say you have a awesome mom ❤️😘
Thanks for this amazing series. I couldn't decide if I was more impressed with the scenery or your sheer determination and stamina through incredible conditions. Just amazing.
An amazing journey! Thanks for bringing us along, bud. Wish you the best to you (and Saku) from a fellow Habs fan.
Hey Justin, im not one to comment on many videos but your work is amazing. Recently found your channel via this series and was hooked all along and now onto previous videos. Just want to say how inspiring and well done it all was. Times are rough right now, but you can bet one conditions ease up you got yourself a new patron supporter. Keep on doing you!
Watching with the kids during lock-down, FAB, thank you.
By far the best series I've watched on youtube in as long as I can recall. You give Lars Monsen a real run for his money. Thanks for bringing us along!
UNBELIEVABLE!!! You and your pup are absolutely HARD CORE brother!!! You're videos are just amazing!!! Never Stop!!! Thanks So Much 👊👊👊
I couldn't ditch my wife (28 years) and my kids and my job (that pays for my kids) to get back out where I belong, but I did live in the bush as a younger brat for a while in New Brunswick (east of Campbellton), Nova Scotia (east of East Kemptville), and in BC (various) and Alaska. I've been "out" like you, so I get it, but never "out" for anything like 87 days. God bless you. You should be teaching young people about the gifts we have in Canada that no one else has. Canada is the last great place on earth.
Loved the video, all of them, cant wait to see more, respect you very much for what you do, also the videos are very clean, no swearing, nice and clean, its a type that anyone can watch, from the age of 5 to 95, its enjoyable to everyone .. thank you once again.Stay Safe ..
Sad to see that you weren't able to finish off your adventure, but you are back home and safe which is what counts the most. What a wonderful journey you had. Great memories of man and dog against the wilderness and many thanks for taking us with you along the way via your wonderful videos.
You are superman....one tough character...
My family and I have been sitting down and enjoying your videos every day during supper. I just want you to know how much we respect and enjoy you and Saku. Also a big shout out to your girlfriend and Bear for sharing you with us. My mom works at a hospital and stuff has been pretty crazy for her. Watching you has provided all of us, especially her, some much needed relief and inspiration. Keep being you man. Much love. - Simon
Your videos are pure escape. Thank you Saku, and keep your human safe.
This is so awesome to watch. Thank you for sharing your journey with us
