Well, she is getting there. Appearances on American TV shows "Austin City Limits", "Late Show With Stephen Colbert", and "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" have helped!
Imagine only just hearing about Courtney Barnett, listening to a random song, loving it, seeing there's a music video, clicking on it and immediately seeing your favourite band Sleater Kinney. Thats when you know your gonna vibe with this music :)
Courtney is a total legend. The amount of thought that goes into her songwriting in unsurpassed. Soon she might even be able to afford to replace the 'Sharpie held on with a rubber band' capo?!
I love this so much because I've walked passed that elevator so many times but never in it cos i use the stairs to go to retrostar and muses of mystery and even the sewing shop where the store lady yelled at another lady once and it scared me, and that means i can't dispute that this elevator does in fact lead into all these places and i love that
The first time I hear this song I became immediately obsessed with it. I have been studying it ever since. I love the hand clapping and that third chord progression change (the rise). It is so cool and the way the rhythm changes is intoxicating.
Yes my girl Courney killin it!!! I remember the first time i heard her. I was trying on a shirt in a california shop that was way too expensive when "depreston" came on. Now whenever i hear that song it has such a special feel to it. Love this girl.
This isn’t about suicide. It’s about someone rejecting society (tearing off his tie) and going to the roof to look down on a crazy society filled with crazy people. He understands elevator operator’s job is a humble job. They understand life’s ups and downs. The person who sees the boy on the roof thinks the boy is on the edge literally and metaphorically, and is going to jump, but that’s just a rash conclusion based on stereotypes. I am an English teacher and I know and.... I’m in love with Courtney.
i could not stop smiling through this entire thing! fav Courtney song! i was expecting a literal visualisation from the story in the song but i love this just as much
I love how the stories in the songs are so clear that it would be very easy (and trite!) to make a video clip about them but the videos always tell a completely different story!

I used the term “spirit animal” without recognizing its nuanced implications, and I apologize. I could have phrased that better.
I first saw her on SNL, and I kinda liked the music, but I couldn't quite figure out why. Then I click on this video and the first thing I see is Sleater-Kinney. Now I know what she reminds me of.
Got a vibe like Sheryl Crow's "All I wanna do", except in ocker Strine. Awesome song. Love the cameos by Magda, Paul Kelly and Michael Luenig. They all wanna get on Courtney's bandwagon.
Courtney, man you rock. Love this video and the new song, Tell Me How You Really Feel, I came here to see. I saw you in DC, now I'm in ABQ. Please come to NM. You would sound great at the Santa Fe Opera House. See you soon, fingers crossed. Love!

So, one of my favorite musicians creates this video for one of my favorite songs, and includes a whole beginning featuring my favorite band! AAAAAAAA!!!!
The video reminds me of the lift from the ABC show 'Lift-Off', where the doors would open at random spots like St. Kilda beach (sans Tim Rogers!) and people would just get in and out. Love the video and CB3, keep it up and visit LA soon!
Mark Hazleton Well, that was a buzzkill. So, for the past 50+ years I'd assumed wrongly...you don't actually require a soul to like good music after all.
We had the great pleasure of seeing Courtney and her band play earlier this year at the Pints Club in Darwin, what a blistering gig, Courtney is fantastic live, her guitar playing brilliant, her band are so tight, how come she isn't more popular here in Australia? The Americans love her, one of her tracks is played on the soundtrack of Season 1 of "Animal Kingdom", one of her other songs was used in Season 1 of "DC : Titans", come on Australia wake up, your musical taste is polluted by the crap you hear on The Voice or Australia's got Talent or the generic crap you hear on most commercial FM radio stations. There is so much fantastic talent in Australia especially with the female singers, Courtney Barnett, Mama Kin, Sarah Blasko, Jen Cloher, Jess Riberio, to name a few.
Careful what you wish for, she plays bigger and bigger gigs here (deservedly!) so enjoy the intimacy while you can! edit: that was three years ago, sure the auzzies have caught up? thought y'all were in the future (time zone gag)?
This is actually one of the best written songs I’ve ever heard.
How is Courtney Barnett not more famous? She's incredible.
Well, she is getting there. Appearances on American TV shows "Austin City Limits", "Late Show With Stephen Colbert", and "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" have helped!
I bought the t shirt. People have asked wtf is that. I explain rock chick new album
Talent is unpredictable, cant put it up in a can.. eh
Get her on Joe Rogan's podcast
Because America prefers shitty artists like Cardi B.
Shes so elegantly awkward. Love love love
Described in some write-ups as a tomboy, which seems pretty accurate. Very charming.
+Ewan MacColl why bring up sexuality?

all while sounding so incredibly effortless
Her lyrics always make my brain tingle 😌

gotta love all those cameos, i saw sleater-kinney and jeff tweedy for sure
i was searching for the comment when i saw Tweedy
The first time I hear this song I became immediately obsessed with it. I have been studying it ever since. I love the hand clapping and that third chord progression change (the rise). It is so cool and the way the rhythm changes is intoxicating.
Wow! What a fantastic homage to Melbourne music and culture! Magda, Tim Rogers, Paul Kelly, Michael Leunig! Brilliant work.
Sad I didn't see Mark Seymour as Hunters and Collectors are one of my favourite bands, especially the early stuff😊😊
Yes my girl Courney killin it!!! I remember the first time i heard her. I was trying on a shirt in a california shop that was way too expensive when "depreston" came on. Now whenever i hear that song it has such a special feel to it. Love this girl.
Saw her at Longitude in Dublin at the weekend and she was easily the best thing about the whole weekend. Amazingly talented woman.

That strange 30 second stretch where she quietly walks over to the balcony and looks down strikes me in the gut every time I see it. I'm not sure why.
Can't break the 69-
Guaranteed you'd never get me up there.
yes
Because everyone loves the buzz of standing on the edge with the wind in their hair, but then everyone's had intrusive thoughts too

Sleater-Kinney and Courtney Barnett!! What an awesome time
after giving it another listen the lyrics are pretty genius
Love the cameo from Sleater-Kinney at the beginning of this amazing video :)
As a Melbournian i LOVE this video clip. Great work Barnett and the Nicholas Building
Agreed and as a Melbournian living in Seattle, the Sleater Kinney cameo makes it even more heart warming.
this song kinda changed my life. I'm extremely suicidal and just having one of your personal idols sing this songs really does it for me.

ive actually seen magda wait for an elevator when she was going on the set of the project. totally waved to her. this gave me flash back
I always think about "Jumpers" by Sleater-Kinney when I listen to this song so seeing them in the video was pretty weird but very cool.
love the sleater kinney, jen cloher, and camp cope cameos!
I got a very simple message out of the ending bit there. "Don't off yourself, play some music instead!" And I love that message.
You know you’re cool if you get Sleater-Kinney in your video. They also appear in Sonic Youth’s Nevermind (What was it Anyway)
Well Done Miss Courtney... Love the song and Sleater-Kinney ladies are an amazing touch.
Well played!!
I loved seeing Sleater Kinney and Jeff and Spencer Tweedy! Adorable video.
As if I couldn't love her any more she comes out with a sweet new vid with an SK cameo 😍😍😍
Courtney Barnett as an elevator operator clapping in the elevator with nuns is my spirit animal.

Track "Courtney Barnett"
on Bandsintown
"Elevator Operator"
Oliver Paul, twenty years old
Thick head of hair, worries he's going bald
Wakes up at quarter past nine
Fare evades his way down the 96 tram line
Breakfast on the run again, he's well aware
He's dropping soy linseed Vegemite crumbs everywhere
Feeling sick at the sight of his computer
He dodges his way through the Swanston commuters
Rips off his tie, hands it to a homeless man
Sleeping in the corner of a metro bus stand and he screams
"I'm not going to work today
Going to count the minutes that the trains run late
Sit on the grass building pyramids out of Coke cans"
Headphone wielding to the Nicholas building
He trips on a pothole that's not been filled in
He waits for an elevator, one to nine
A lady walks in and waits by his side
Her heels are high and her bag is snakeskin
Hair pulled so tight you can see her skeleton
Vickers perfume on her breath
A tortoise shell necklace between her breasts
She looks him up and down with a botox frown
He's well used to that look by now
The elevator dings and they awkwardly step in
Their fingers touch on the rooftop button
Don't jump little boy, don't jump off that roof
You've got your whole life ahead of you, you're still in your youth
I'd give anything to have skin like you
He said "I think you're projecting the way that you're feeling
I'm not suicidal, just idling insignificantly
I come up here for perception and clarity
I like to imagine I'm playing SimCity
All the people look like ants from up here
And the wind's the only traffic you can hear"
He said "All I ever wanted to be
Was an elevator operator, can you help me please?"
Don't jump little boy, don't jump off that roof
You've got your whole life ahead of you, you're still in your youth
I'd give anything to have skin like you
Don't jump little boy, don't jump off that roof
You've got your whole life ahead of you, you're still in your youth
I'd give anything to have skin like you
