Lyrics
I sleep in late
Another day
Oh what a wonder
Oh what a waste.
It's a monday
It's so mundane
What exciting things
Will happen today?
The yard is full of hard rubbish it's a mess and
I guess the neighbours must think we run a meth lab
We should ammend that
I pull the sheets back
It's 40 degrees
And i feel like i'm dying.
Life's getting hard in here
So i do some gardening
Anything to take my mind away from where it's sposed to be.
The nice lady next door talks of green beds
And all the nice things that she wants to plant in them
I wanna grow tomatoes on the front steps.
Sunflowers, bean sprouts, sweet corn and radishes.
I feel pro-active
I pull out weeds
All of a sudden
I'm having trouble breathing in.
My hands are shaky
My knees are weak
I can't seem to stand
On my own two feet
I'm breathing but i'm wheezing
Feel like i'm emphysem-in'
My throat feels like a funnel
Filled with weet bix and kerosene and
Oh no, next thing i know
They call up triple o
I'd rather die than owe the hospital
Till I get old
I get adrenalin
Straight to the heart
I feel like Uma Thurman
Post-overdosing kick start
Reminds me of the time
When i was really sick and i
Had too much psuedoefedryn and i
Couldn't sleep at night
Halfway down high street, andy looks ambivalent
He's probably wondering what i'm doing getting in an ambulance
The paramedic thinks i'm clever cos i play guitar
I think she's clever cos she stops people dying
Anaphylactic and super hypocondriactic
Should've stayed in bed today
I much prefer the mundane.
I take a hit from
An asthma puffer
I do it wrong
I was never good at smoking bongs.
I'm not that good at breathing in.
"The paramedic thinks I'm clever 'cause I play guitar
I think she's clever cause she stops people dying"
This line cracks me up so much.
+Cleric It's funny but also strangely poignant at the same time
+Cleric love that line as well. :)
+Cleric Oh my god same, probably one of my favourite lyrics of all time
+Cleric omg holy shit!!! me too!! after the first times i listened to this song i started to always laugh there without failure haha
+raisedfist80 I'm just picturing her lying there on the stretcher in extreme distress, as the paramedic is trying to console her by casually complimenting her musical abilities, then she replies deadpan: "yeah, but you literally just saved my life." I guess it's the extreme gratitude towards this complete stranger. It also reminds me of a lyric a friend of mine wrote describing a paramedic trying to cheer her up after a suicide attempt...yeah that's probably it.
Finally, asthma rock. Love it.
it's called pseudoephedrinia
SuperNevile pre sure she said super hypochondriac
Exactly
Yess this song is totally about the day she had an asthma attack, I swear
😂😂😂
This song gives me the vibe of realizing that you are not ok but it’s ok. Meaning you feel the pain but you just went numb or passive about it.
these folks are really good at tennis
EXACTLY! I couldnt put my finger on it i always said this song makes my head feel quieter haha
As an autistic person with a lot of anxiety but I’m weirdly relaxed about having a panic attackI relate to this so much
For me, it's not metaphorical at all. This song gives me the vibe of being scared shitless. It only takes a few episodes of suddenly difficult breathing to make you that way. Maybe just one.
Lol yes probably why they used it on Bojack ha
Im an ER nurse and can definitely say writing a song this good is really much harder than restarting someone's heart.
This song is the worst
@@michaellawrence5387 nope :)
@@michaellawrence5387 and your lurking in the comments to tell people who like the song that? Righto, hope your a happier person now!
@@MrNintendo36 hey we've all been there. Having trouble breathing in
Good job
It gets easier.
Everyday it gets a little easier.
But you gotta do it everyday day, that's the hard part.
But it does get easier.
Best Quote in a LOOOOOOOONNGG time.
+aderose Ok
cardiacArrest I know. "Ok" is what Bojack says afterwards. LOL
that's what brought me to this song
but you gotta do it everyday. that's the hard part. but it does get easier.
but you have to do it every day
"The paramedic thinks I'm clever cause I play guitar
I think she's clever cause she stops people dying"
The most inspiring lyrics ever.
and excellent delivery when she says "dying" I die
Favorite line in the song
I noticed that line great way to bat a compliment back lol, there's a strong self-deprecating element to a lot of her songs it's really refreshing, all the big noting and bragging in modern pop is really tedious this is a refreshing anti-dote.
Nicholas Sans Pasty perfectly said
Should've stayed in bed today
I love Courtney, she's such a genuinely lovely person. I saw her over 4 years ago in a tiny local venue and made her a little gift as I was watching her. I shyly gave it to her afterwards, whilst people were getting CD's signed. She asked me what I was doing later that evening and if I wanted to come to her performance at a much bigger venue, also locally. I'd already had plans that night, so I didn't get to go, but I was so touched by her kindness and humility. ❤️
Yeah I met her once, I made her a little wooden box and when you open it there's a plasticine model of a ww2 bomber in it with the words 'fuck a dancer, always feel substandard' written in the lid. She asked if i'd like to fuck off. Which I did. One of the best nights of my life.
A nicer lady you couldn't wish to meet. Salt of the earth, you know? Once I saw her passing by my local sweet shop (I was inside)! I know, crazy, right? What the hell was she doing in my shithole of a town? Anyway, I wasted no time at all as I was fully aware that this rare occurence may never happan again, so I grabbed a twix bar and ran up to her and asked her to accept it as a token of appreciation for the relevance of her lyrics and how they have helped me to make sense of my life. Needless to say she took the twix bar from my hand and smiled at me. Best day of my life by far! Each time I visit my local weet shop, she's in my head!
@@johnmiller9953 - i was gonna say to Ju Lia. Geez Louise. I think you may have missed an oppurtunity there cobber.lol.
What were your other plans?
Oh just a little one? I thought Courtney liked em medium...thanks for bragging tho ;)
It's 2020 and my teenage daughter turned me on to this song. I originally wanted to learn more about the music she enjoyed as I did growing up. Honestly, this song helps me personally get through the day sometimes.
That’s sweet! 😊
I love the almost rhyming
+Dale S There is rhyming though, are you referring to the slant rhymes? Or the rhythmic type of singing?
Oh I didn't know there was a word for that. Quite a few words even. Slant rhyme, almost rhyme, half rhyme, imperfect rhyme, off rhyme haha
Near rhyme
A not-quite rhyme
'The paramedic thinks I'm clever cos I play guitar. I think she's clever cos she stops people dying.' Best bit of the song lol.
"I take a hit from asthma puffer, i do it wrong. I was never good at smoking bongs" Just a great way of thinking of things. Great song

**ass
thats why Im still practicing!
It NEVER gets old. So trippy and sarcastic wonderful LOVE it. Always. YEARS later. A CLASSIC !!
I cant stop listening to the line “anything to take my mind away from where it’s supposed to be”. Its so cathartic.
the way she stares at the camera while she's singing that monotonous first verse is mesmerizing
Her voice and expression resonate deeply within in me. It touches a despair I feel and that I think many people do. She wears it so freely, without putting a mask on to hide her pain. Thank you! Not everything is sunshine and roses. Pain does exist, and there's nothing wrong with it.
Tegan Roche Melancholy in good way
well said :)
This isn't despair, it's first world ennui.
she looks like one of those girls you see on Girls Out West
Yeah it's called mediated self suppresion.
Everything this woman touches turns to Gold. The songwriting is impeccable
I just got out of hospital yesterday and I found this song today. Man, does it say everything for me right now. I'm starting a garden on the deck of my loft.
The same thing happened to me three years ago!
Bojack horseman brought me here and now I ended up buying the whole album on Google music...Her voice and rhythm is intoxicating I love it
this song is a mix between depression and anxiety
Thats probably why I love so much as someone who has both lmao
Yet it makes me feel so relaxed 😎
Lyrically, maybe. It's always made me relaxed.
I think those two things aren't so different, they kinda run in the same circles
It gets easier, but you’ve got to do it every day. But it does get easier.
Finally 10 years later this song hits the radio!
This song popped up on auto play and began right at the stroke of midnight on New Years 2022! LoL
Listening to this whilst watching and hearing fireworks is a trip.
Really cool that a Courtney Barnett song is in Bojack
"It get easier. Every day it gets easier, but you gotta do it everyday. That's the hard part."
Where is that from cause I just finished watching an episode of BoJack Horse man and a random dude said that to Bojack when he collapsed after running
Doesn't matter I just remembered how I got to this song and it was at the end of that episode. lol
Finale of season 2.
But it does get easier.
@@strogger_ Yeah, but how worse could it get?
Avant Gardener - truly an avantgard title for a song! Lovin it.
This has to be one of the top ten songs of the last 20 years
Her music in Bojack Horseman fit so well- both express the banality of life so well. Definitely recommend the show :)
Alex Fisher after watching the first two seasons, holy shit this show felt "real"! Looking forward for watching season 3 right now!
Just got into the show. Was hoping for a laugh. Instead got an emotional wreck. The show, that is.
@Simulation algorithm First 6 Episodes: Haha funny horse
After Episode 7: *3 a.m starring at the wall im bed music intensified*
Oh wow! Which songs were hers? Best show of the decade.
Too late, that's literally why I'm here
Isn't it awesome when you have that one friend who every once in a while, reaches out and touches your soul?
I stumbled across this not long after it came out, and saw her on one of her first UK shows back in 2014 at a really small gig. Hung out briefly after the show, she put me on to King Gizzard and some other Aussie groups who were unheard of here at the time. Listened to her EPs a lot when I was just driving round as a 20 year old to work and slightly melancholic. Caught her on her next tour a year later in a different city and she remembered me, Bones and Dave as well. Cool guys, thanks for soundtracking part my early 20s, eternally grateful
It's currently 40°C in large parts of Europe, and I constantly have to think about this song.
Makes bearing these hellish temperatures a bit easier.
Best Lyrics ever. The end.
"The paramedic thinks i’m clever cos i play guitar
I think she’s clever cos she stops people dying"
normally when i hear a lyric like that, i think its trying too hard to be quirky and funny. but i cant help but love that line
Dumbest fucking line in a song of stupid try-hard lyrics. And the way she sings is fucking brutal.
@@fruitypeebils i know your reply was 3 years ago lmao but i could not agree more. normally i would think that line is so corny but i LOVE it in this song

So nice of young Bob Dylan to take time out of his schedule to come judge their tennis match.
I was looking for your comment hahaha
Nils Waage
I don't know if using a Bob Dylan-lookalike was intentional but I feel that it fits. Courtney's music is a bit of a spiritual successor to Mr. Dylan, IMO.
Isiskos Completely agree! Barnett is amazing, much like early Dylan
he's another artist off her label. fraser gorman
"I sat with my high-heeled sneakers on, waiting to play tennis in the noonday sun. I had my white shorts rolled up past my waist, and my wig-hat falling in my face. But they wouldn't let me on the tennis court". “I Shall Be Free No. 10” ~ “Another Side Of Bob Dylan” (1964).........................probably not intentional. :-)
"The paramedic thinks I'm clever cause I play guitar
I think she's clever cause she stops people dying"
A very important line in 2020, with so many live music venues facing closure across the world all governments need to think how import the arts are to everyone in their daily lives and support those who make their living from enriching our lives. Someone who plays guitar is important to the paramedic, as much as the paramedic is to the guitar player.
I feel that this song is relatable to most of the world right now.
The beginning grabs you, the riffs massage your ears and her voice and lyrics LUSH baby.
Am I the only one who hears some Syd Barrett in this? Also, 'I think she's clever 'cause she stops people from dying' is the best lyric I've ever heard.
Actually, the line is 'I think she's clever 'cause she stops people dyin' (no 'from'), which makes the line even better (makes it a little more ambiguous).
Syd Barrett is also the first thing I thought of when I heard this song. GMTA!
Nice work.
Jack Oster Really not hearing Syd Barrett at all, how has this so many thumbs up? Courtney's lyrics are very literal and tbh Barrett's style is the complete opposite as he uses words to paint images rather than tell a super specific story, tbh both songwriters are on complete opposite ends of the spectrum as I see it lol.
***** It's less the content of the lyrics than the deadpan delivery with a heavy, heavy accent
This song means so much to me. I relate to the anxiety and depression she’s describing in the song. This song helped me get through a rough season and still is always helpful to listen to.
Tragically underrated song I love CB sooo much
it gets easier... but you gotta do it everyday

Bojack from DBZ?
This is good music. Makes my old aching soul relieved to know people still make and appreciate good music.
Bring this song back, it's the song of our times now.

Thank you National Public Radio and Marketplace for playing this little lead in! what a wonderful Gem to discover!

This has become my Monday anthem.
It's a Monday and I felt compelled to look up this video again. Good call.

"Sounds like someone has a case of the Mondays..."
"I thought to myself, what if she rejects me? What if she doesn't like me, the way I like her? She is really important to me, I don't wanna fuck up our relationship with this. But I am not the only one who is afraid of rejection. I have to try it, cause I wanna do it, and I'm able to do it.
So I went over to her."
"I sleep in late, another day..."
this song is catchy and fantasticly written very witty love it
that bob dylan way of story telling and singing is such a refreshing thing in this day and age! love it!
I heard this song the other afternoon on the radio (1st time) and I fell in love with it- She's terrific! Gotta hear more from her.
Thanks for posting this.
Beautiful poetry and music
This song and Courtney’s deadpan downward lilting lyrics are so good. Sounds like she’s about to fall asleep at the end of each phrase. Love it!
"The paramedic thinks I'm clever 'cause I play guitar, I think she's clever 'cause she stops people dying." Brilliant.
I've listened to this song at least 1000 times. Lyrics, music, delivery: perfect. Brava
Can't believe it's been 10 years since this song came out. It seems like yesterday. Love it!
This has stayed my favourite song for the whole time it’s been out! It’s so good 😭

Anything to take my mind away from where it's spose to be. cried at those lines
Cool - a song about asthma. Gotta love it!
LOOL
This song contains a lot of words that I would not expect to find in a song.
Like many others I came here from Bojack (a good few years ago now). I know it may not be the most organic or “cool” way to discover music, but I’ve discovered hundreds of songs from movies and TV shows. This one has really stuck with me and has a lot of meaning for me :)
"I'd rather die than owe the hospital til I get old" (Talkin' bout my generation)

It's free she's in ozzstralya but trying to think amricanot
'The paramedic thinks I'm clever cuz I play guitar. I think she's clever cuz she stops people dying.' love that line
This song could literally be ABOUT quarantine.
Yeah! Just realize that too.
I think its about a girl with a health problem that realizes that she should have stayed inside after trying to do activities that cause her respiratory system to work harder, which is not good for her, also mine are working harder rn cause of dis joint
'Literally'? Seems like only douches (mis)use that word.
Btw there are much bigger and larger problems than quarantine. But if quarantine gives you and identity and some edge, then use it.. but dont be a douche about it. Whats next you're gonna appropriate slave blues songs for your few months in luxury 'qurantine' ?
@@Stoney-Jacksman dude ... you okay?

pearljammer13 hahaha
Corey Cavalier I read your comment yesterday. After listening to the song 20 or so times more, I don't know why, but the song just seems to have that effect. It's so strangely addictive.
Edit: I feel very uncomfortable with having written "after listening to the song 20 or so times more". Very grammatically awkward. My apologies to anyone that cares.

"The paramedic thinks I'm clever 'cause I play guitar
I think she's clever cause she stops people dying"
There is so much truth in this line! A coworker recommended this song to me because of this line. We work in a downtown food bank where we frequently have to call in first responders - and there is a huge amount of mutual respect between us when we do. They often tell me that they can't imagine doing my job - and I respond in kind.
is it odd that this song makes me wanna go to a quiet place with a cool landscape and just stay there with my earphones listening to music all day

I've actually said that before. But you shouldn't have that problem, You're Australian!
You have to pay for ambulances unless you have the insurance for it in Australia. I once caught a taxi to the emergency department to avoid this haha. Once you get to the hospital it's free though so it's still pretty awesome.
