  • Have you been thinking about sewing a capsule wardrobe? In this video, I share the 5 key steps in my design process of planning my autumn/winter capsule wardrobe of 2021!
Spring is almost here and the last freeze is almost over (probably tonight as I type...), so it's time to give the autumn/winter capsule a little wrap up!
Here are my 5 steps in designing and planning this capsule wardrobe:
03:57 - Step 1: Curating a moodboard: Using Pinterest and Canva
05:31 - Step 2: Building the foundation: Selecting garments from current wardrobe
06:06 - Step 3: Working out the (minimum) number and types of garments to make: Doing some math!
    07: 30 - Step 4: Developing a colour palette: It was fate...
09:03 - Step 5: Planning what to sew - designs and lines
Review these steps and the graphics I spent so long creating on my blog: gwenstellamade.com/blog/how-to-sew-a-capsule-wardrobe-my-5-steps-in-the-design-process

I’m working through the Curated Closet right now and your process with Pinterest and the moodboard reminds me of that. It’s a wonderful way to discover your style and to construct a coherent wardrobe! Thanks for explaining how you plan your capsule!

going on a whim really helps to highlight the direction your style has to go to,i made akilt out of curiosity last year i thought i would never wear, bought a paisley shawl i thought looked a bit tacky at a thrift shop, a cheap flannel shirt i thought i had no use for already owning one and a black satin shirt oversized shirt i thought would look too plain during sales; all of those items were things i couldn't have planned for, would go with very few stuff in my wardrobe in some case but they truly caught my eye and are now some of my most favorite articles of clothing. i like to see capsule wardrobes as a strong basis to experiment on or the essence of one's visual identity, the condensed most valuable essence of someone's unique style upon which they can experiment with cheaper ore trendy stuff (with moderation, fast fashion hurts the ecosystem, the society and your mental health). I also think it's a great tool to use if like me you like to move between different styles, decades or gender expressions

I loved seeing your steps for creating a capsule wardrobe. Also, I totally get what you mean about the harmony created by likeness vs contrast! I try to do that too!

You've put it so much more eloquently than I did! Yes, harmony created by likeness and contrast! This is why I need to talk to like-minded folks more often and learn how to describe my thought process hehe. Thank you! xxx

I loved hearing and seeing your thought process. All of the pieces came out so lovely! This is very helpful as I am planning to make some pieces and am trying to narrow down how wearable they will be with the rest of my wardrobe. I love the idea of focusing on a specific decade/era (like you did with the 70s ) each season. I think that would help me greatly with the decision making process and I would be able to build a vintage inspired wardrobe little by little each season in a very manageable way. Thanks for these tips! Also I’d love to see the collection together 💛💛

Yay! I'm so happy to hear that this video helped you. Yes, I love doing different decades for each season! I'm a 50's / 60's gal for spring and summer mostly. Hope you'll have fun putting your capsule together! xxx
