"South Dakota Husets Speedway sure loves 410 winged sprint car racing". There's an understatement. Look at that facility. HUGE grand stands. Concrete pits. Way to go Husets. Now as far as your race Tanner? That's some Outlaw stuff right there. Roll off the trailer and go from 14th to 7th? Never been on the track before? Heck yeah dude. Gitin'er dun! Any details on the primary motor?

You started out as a boy, and now you are a man in the toughest form of racing. You and the team are working hard, and it shows. Great job at Husets.
    Go 18T!

Described Husets pretty good in the video, having raced at Husets dating back to 1980, this is how the track usually plays out, Wet, Tacky early on, as the 3 classes of cars race throughout the night, the racing groove moves up close to the wall making for a 2, sometimes 3 lane track.
Husets is not a perfect oval, most people do not know this, turns 3 and 4 is much wider than turns 1 and 2. Turn 1 and 2 willl hold moisture longer, mostly thanks to the being more in the shade due to how the track sits down in that valley, and all of he trees and buildings on that side of the property...
Alot of times, the perfect line in turns 1 and 2 is coming in high in turn 1, cross off and coming off the bottom, which gives you that awesome momentum burst of speed down back stretch. Those who stay high, often deal with that back stretch wall, which appears to come into them, due to how the turn is narrower..However, they carry theeir speed more into to turns 3 and 4 which allows them to get off turn 4 (wider turn) making up that loss off of two. So Tanner described it well - while he found that quick line through 1 and 2, his competition was able to carry that speed on through turns 3 and 4, so by moving up a little in 3 and 4, Tanner was able to upset that momemtum the competition was abe to maintain.
Then there is that spot in turn 4 where its absolutely most wider, that goes back to the original creation of the track in 1954. THere was a group of trees that were there, rather than cut them down, Till Husets just built the wall around the outside of them, so that is why the front stretch wall is bowed out there...When they built the concrete wall in 1964, they brought turn four back in, but if you look close, you see where this connection point is...However, today, has lead to some interesting race dynamics.
Early in the night, Tanner nearly hit the turn 4 wall, which is normal for a lot of guys, even the experienced drivers, that turn 4 wall sneaks up on you, its a little flatter up there where it meets the front stretch, thats pretty much due to the topography of the landscape, it acts like a tornado effect, just sucks you in if your not careful...but if you master turn 3 and 4, you can carry a ton of speed there off the turn, and make tons of passes there...
So, every time Tanner gained on his exit of turn 2, his competition got it back off turn 4.
Husets did NOT always have the inside burm either. That came sometime after the 1990 season...In the old days, the bottom of track was even with the infield, so you had guys forming that bottom groove right up in the infield along the grass where the moisture was able to collect itself...As they watered the track, in the old days, guys would form that bottom groove right up in the infield near the grass, where it nearly created its own burm where the track met the infield, creating a little rise, which abled guys to best utilize it,...In 1990, when they began creating that inside burm, they just began to dig down into the track, which at the same time, created a higher banking that you see today.
Huset Speedway is built down into the river vallley, people dont realize this, but this area was to be a LAKE at one time, prior 1930, it floods very easily here mostly cause you have the Sioux River to the west, the Split Rock Creed that runs around it, and to the south, you got Beaver Creek...So you got that natural spring that just allows the water to rise during flood seasons. Between 1920-1930 there was a movement to turn that valley into a LAKE, while building lake front properties above the bluff lines. However the depression hit soon after, and many properties exchanged hands, and Till Huset bought the property to create his farm around 1936...
Till Husets had owned a Small Gas Station, Junkyard at the junction of S.D Hwy 11 and U.S Hwy 16 near the point the Sioux River meets the Split Rock Creek - this was known as Huset's Corner....The old buildings had survived long into the 1980's until they redid that corner, due to flooding, they removed the buildings, and rebuilt the corner, moving the junction point further to the north, while creating that much wider turn going up what is East Madison Street towards Sioux Falls.
Till Huset's would have farmed his land fro 1936 to 1950, I am assuming, because it flooded alot, causing some issues, he began dreaming of building the track, however, he never added lights, just dug out a track, in its original shape, creating that egg shape effect. About the same time, Francis and Bob Van Ann came to Sioux Falls, and bought land, and buitl Soo Speedway along S.D Hwy 42 and Six Mile Road, just south of East 10th Street - this track, was the place to be, and had lights, had the local business support, and had bleachers, a concession booth, and announcer booth...
While Husets opened on on Mothers Day 1954, Soo Speedway opened up the week after, for one year they competed, but cause Husets did NOT have lights, it was forced to race earlier in the day, much harder on tires, equipment and teams.. So Soo Speedway had the better prepared track, lights, and could hold 6,000 fans. Husets closed its doors early 1955, it could not compete with Old Soo.
All the tradition you see at Husets today, really began at Soo Speedway - a 3/8 Mile Track. They formed the 8 PM Sharp Start Time, Fast Paced Racing Program, and Well Prepared Racetrack, hardly any dust.
However, a Racers Boycott occurred i 1958, after they split the stock car class in two, a Unlimited Class, and a Limited Class. Which in those days the racers raced for 40% of the Back Gate. Of course, the racers wanted more money..So they lined up their cars along Six Mile Road, not letting in fans, nor racers, demanding more money in the purse, the Van Ann Family said no, you could not blame them. ALL profits made, went back into the track itself.
The racers then pack up, head to the Local Sioux Falls YMCA, form the Sioux Falls Stock Car Association, appoint Fred Buckmiller as the President, and sold BONDS used to buy Husets.
Huset had sat for nearly 3 years (1955 to 1958) - it was a dump, Till Husets had allowed it to go to waste, storing all his farm equipment, tractors, etc. They got the track back to normal began running races late in 1958...
Soo Speedway held a few races in 1959, but the tables were turned, all the racers, now part of their own ownership group, now were committed to their own thing at Husets...Soo Speedway closed its doors.
In 1964, the SFSCA sold a second round of BONDS, this revenue was used to build the concrete wall, add Bleachers, and a new Announcer Booth, which stood up until 1990. This was the last time they had improved the facility, except for adding the inside concrete wall in 1987, just concrete blocks at the time. It would be later, in the mid 90's a permanent concrete wall was built along the front stretch.
Tom Van Ann, came to work for Husets the summer of 1976, he was the son of Bob Van Ann, one of the owners of Soo Speedway, it took a lot for him to do that though, he blamed the "Racers" for the demise of his fathers track, and for his fathers death, caused by a heart attack, which he always felt the racers caused by adding stress to his father....Tom worked his way up to Vice President of Competition from 1976 to 2016 - today he is just a track official in charge of the racing program...So a piece of Soo Speedway's legacy came to Husets when Bob's son Tom came to help run the track
Fred Buckmiller died in 1981, the SFSCA between 1982 and 1987 were in turmoil, they had not invested money in the track for nearly a decade, the track was aging, and becoming worn down. Another Racers group led by Walt Zirpel had brought Sprint Cars to the area at Hartford Speedway (1976-1983), had just closed their doors cause they mismanaged the revenues, adding to miuch to the purses...By 1987, the SFSCA finally sells Husets to the Rubin Family - who took Husets to the next level in the 90's
The days of racers owning the track, were done, however, by now, the track owners, and racers discovered, that local racing was better, where its a 50-50 partnership....Promoters promote, management manages the finances, and the racers race.

Good run. I was watching that inside burm and figured what you came away with. Just enough to not totally upset the car but enough to load the right rear to launch. You have this, just keeping the car and track tuned together will keep one in the hunt, from there it's merely aligning the stars. Good qualifying and heat spots will most always be key. Every once in awhile someone will find the magic setup for the night and walk away with it but, competition is fierce at the front. Just pecking away when your car is manageable, the steady eddy formula is what keeps it more on an even keel. Another page in the notebook.

That was a very nice bit of racing Tanner. I always liked Husetts on 'The World Of Outlaws' racing game. It was probably about my third or forth favourite. I wonder how that translates to real life (if at all).
Also, I wonder if you might do a video explaining how you selected your gear ratio. Obviously track length, width and tightness of corners are fixed at each track. Then there are variables like how slick and what position you have to start with etc.. I'd find it interesting to understand how you select your gears. How much of that choice is down to those fixed (at each track) constants and the variable conditions thereafter.
Finally, you mentioned the black and red of the 18T. I'm tentatively going to dub your car the Black Widow. I hope it catches on and perhaps you could put a distinctive red lighting bolt under the 18 on the tail.
Loved this race and good luck for the next one Tanner. ❤ Cheers man. 🍺😁👍
