  • 'Eloise Salutes The Stars', hostess Eloise McElhone. Guests are actress Veronica Lake and Emmy-winning director Alex Segal. Aired Sunday, March 23, 1952, on the DuMont TV Network.
I found this doing research on Ebay. It is from a kinescope that was transferred to an Apex 187 (u-matic) videocassette in the 1980's. The original tape has been donated to the UCLA Film & Television Archive.
I hope making this interview available will contribute to Veronica Lake being remembered as an actress of depth, warmth, and diversity.

I had no idea Veronica Lake was an alcoholic, and died tragically young at just 50, in 1973. Her mother outlived her by 20 years, dying in 1992. Veronica's life was short, but it was glorious, as well as her incredible success in movies she had four children. I was shocked to learn that Eloise who interviews her here, had an almost identical lifespan to Veronica. Eloise was born one year earlier than Veronica in 1921, and died two years after her, aged 53, in 1974. How sad these two ladies would not see old age. Thanks for a fascinating upload, the interviews were better than those feeble efforts by Dick Cavett - however did he become such a star chat show host? And I just love how Eloise broke off to advertise paper serviettes, it's SO 1950s!

I saw her interviewed on Dick Cavett, and without knowing, surmised her to being an alcoholic by the way she looked and acted. She had a somewhat hard look about her and a slightly erratic manner, that reminded me of most of the people I knew who were alcoholics. Sad.

Veronica had a rough life privately. She dated Aristotle Onassis once & he said she drank so much on their date & then vomited violently - that was in the 40's - he never wanted to see her again after that. Sad. Veronica looked terrible in this interview - she looks a lot older than 30 when this interview was done.

The Hollywood Studio system's dark side is often downplayed. Any other industry that produced so many alcoholics, drug abusers, suicides, and dysfunctional children would have been investigated for abuse and/or regulated. Lake was just one of many with on-screen success and off-screen demons. Regarding Cavett...in a contest of Cavett vs Eloise, Cavett wins easily, be the voting from the pros in the field or the general public. No contest.

The popular opinion is that Veronica suffered from undiagnosed bi polar disorder. There wasn't too much information on bi polar disorder back then. Veronica self medicated with alcohol . She was very difficult to work with and many of her co-stars expressed no desire to work with her again. She lost custody of her three children and had a horrible relationship with her mother. I have Sullivans Travels and This Gun for Hire in my DVD collection- Veronica's beauty was mesmerizing and she could act. What a sad end when she finally got her star on the Hollywood walk of fame shortly before her death. Nobody showed up. It was just Veronica along with a journalist that was interviewing her and one other nameless person.

I've just finished reading her autobiography and she says that she has been diagnosed with schizophrenia when she was still a child.
But I assume that she was misdiagnosed because as you've said there wasn't that much information about bipolar disorder back then and she never got help for whatever mental problems she had.

She didn't want to be an actress. She even told her parents that but her mother insisted and pushed her into it. Apparently, she didn't know she had cirrhosis of the liver until right before she died. She probably would have lived longer with a transplant. But it wasn't until the late 70's. that it became a viable option.

This is great to see this Veronica Lake interview - the quality of this 1952 video is remarkably clear given that anything from this period would have been a kinescope. The "Doeskin Tissue" commercial is cute and (as an aside) I recall reading that singer Kate Smith once made a blunder on live television by saying; "Use Doeskin, the best Kleenex you will find." Depravity, lol. She didn't have money. Does being poor make you depraved in America? The only reference to mental illness ever came from the book written by her mother. The mother pushed her into show business. Sued her for support. Then wrote a truly unkind biography of her daughter after she was dead. Most of the terrible stories of Veronica repeated and repeated today come from that horrid book. Seriously, why would anyone write a book that tears your dead daughter to pieces? For the money. Veronica was the old hag's meal ticket when she was alive and even after she died. De Toth's autobiography never mentions mental illness. Just that Veronica had a very unhappy childhood. If someone was mentally ill in that family I'd bet it wasn't the daughter.

Ms. Lake's old co star Alan Ladd made his perhaps best known movie the next year , Shane with much older co star Jean Arthur while she is doing TV interviews on the poor cousin Dumont network . The program that Ms. McElhone briefly refers to at the beginning is Leave It To The Girls , a gabfest which a panel of four ? women debated a topic with a lone male . That's an idea I am surprised they don't have that today . Coincidentally Lake and Arthur did Peter Pan . I guess something happened on the Lake run of PP , i know that Arthur did a limited music version on Broadway with Boris Karloff as Captain Hook . Arthurs friend Mary Martin did the more complete musical version which became one her signature roles . Ms. Lake was very perceptive in her explanation of TV : a combination of the stage , radio , motion pictures . Mr. Segal actually directs a portion of his interview time . His daughter was the co star of 1980s sitcom Married With Children .

DuMont was not big on production values or big names either; in 1952 it was already struggling to survive against the Big Three. Alas, that was true of Miss Lake also. Demand for femmes fatales in noir movies was drying up as the postwar boom's optimism ( in Scope and stereo) chased the blues away.
Veronica had been on the hooch for several years and her marriage to Andre de Toth, the one-eyed director, was on the rocks. Both had gone bankrupt after she could not get paid for 'Stronghold', a Mexican thriller with Zachary Scott. She would not film again until 1966, some years after she was found working as a waitress in the cheap women-only hotel where she lived in NYC.
Alex Segal was more flourishing. He had been directing mostly adaptations of stage plays for the 'Celanese Theater' live anthology, and in 1966 he would collect a primetime Emmy for 'Death of a Salesman'.

    Veronica Lake Interview
I find it interesting that who ever set up and directed this interview didn't seem to realize that virtually every shot filmed a very awkward and unflattering side angle with no full frontal face images.
She was born in 1922 and so was just 30 during at the time of the interview. Could hardly have been considered past her prime. Ironically, one could still view only the left eye.

30 is incredibly young. I believe Elizabeth Taylor was nearly 30 when she played in Cleopatra. However, as much as I adore and love Ms. Lake, she doesn’t look 30. Perhaps it could be attributed to the “matronly” look that was popular back in those days, that aged her.

Poor Connie. Only 29o likes. She wanted to be a neurosurgeon but she had a vile stage mother. That and the studios killed her off. She was funny, talented and beautiful and deserved so much better. But we dont always get what we deserve.

Veronica Lake was a big star next to Alan Ladd and other actors, but I think it was hard for her to reconcile career and personal life. She had four children in the 1940s, and lost one of them, early in an accident in the studio. In this interview, she was only 30, but already without the great beauty that marked the golden years Hollywood .

The interview was refreshing, particularly seeing her sober. She came across as intelligent and eloquent. I'm skeptical about her having a mental disorder; it seems more like her mother's excuse for poor parenting. It's clear Veronica never aspired to be an actress; it was her mother who pushed her into it.

After Veronica died, her mother said that she had been schizophrenic since she was a child and that's why she put her to study acting! Later, when Veronica became a famous movie star in Hollywood, her mother sued her for not giving her financial support! and to make matters worse after Veronica dies, the mother publishes a book about the life of her daughter. Draw your own conclusions!!

The image of Veronica Lake - with regards to museums and history - will outlive the image of Marilyn Monroe. I know that sounds nutty because Marilyn's iconic likeness is everywhere, but 500 years from now, and from then on, Veronica Lake is someone whose face and voice will be far more "branded" for inexplicable reasons. No one will be around to prove me wrong, but someone, ages from now, will read this and say, "That guy was right."
