- In the early 1940s, American film actress Veronica Lake changed her trademark peekaboo hairstyle to encourage women working in war industry factories to adopt more practical, safer hairstyles. Veronica Lake was a popular American film actress who enjoyed both popular and critical acclaim, especially for her femme fatale roles in film noir with Alan Ladd during the 1940s. A stray lock of her shoulder-length blonde hair during a publicity photo shoot led to her iconic hairstyle which hid one eye, and was widely imitated

Clipped from the US News Review, Issue 5, available at the Internet Archives.
After Veronica Lake changed her hair, accidents in these plants fell by nearly 25%. Unfortunately, her career never recovered from that bit of public service.
What a shame. Wonder why...
Why? I’m genuinely not informed
@@liv4177Her popularity was very linked to her iconic look.
@@YorkistWhiteRose So her safety made her popular? How is that a shame? I’m still very confused sorry
Her pre-war look was what made her popular. Google "The Glass Key" and you'll see what iconic look I mean.
Veronica Lake even looked gorgeous with her hair up!
The style she is wearing is known as "Victory Rolls", because of the "V" shape the rolls from in the in the back!" Cool, huh!
Check one movie of Veronica and you'll be hooked. My Goodness was she special!!
I remember reading that Gone With the Wind's snood hairstyles also became popular for factory working women because it also kept the hair out.
I think Disney's Sleeping Beauty must have been based on her. They have such similar faces.
jessica rabbit was modeled after veronica, found that out months ago!
I was sporting a Veronica Lake hairdo and was actually told to put it up when entering a factory floor at one time:)
Her hair is lovely!! I adore her pinned back look. Definitely going to try to figure that one out for myself :D
Thanks for uploading this! Did you know that the change in Veronica Lake's hairstyle ended her career? Absolutely true. People didn't like her without her 'witchlock'.
If youtube was around this would be a hair tutorial on her channel lol
Now that hairstyle is awesome!!
Those exact machines are still in use in factories across the country. Back then, they built machinery to last.
Every time I see a vid like this I think, WHERE'S THEIR SAFETY GLASSES?
They're free to return to the one eyed haircut after the war.
awesome!
Veronica Lake was such a lovely lady!
Lovely !
I loved her hairstyle and dresses, cape in I Married a Witch. Fun movie.
I'll be doggone. That's the most beautiful woman I've ever seen. Why wasn't I born in the 40s? Lol.
Fantastic
I wish this tyoe of 40s fashion would come back
She looks like Disney's sleeping beauty, Aurora :D A timeless beauty!
War...huh! What is it good for? Absolutely, HAIRSTYLES!
She was tiny - only 4'11. What a cutie.
deb310red actually 5’2” and Alan Ladd was 5’8 1/2”
Haha, war-time fashions! Great video thanks for sharing!
Veronica looks exactly like my mom when she was young and mom was a true rosie the riviter. The narrator sounds like Eugene (Ed) Kern could be wrong about that one though.
Wow~! Beautiful :)
Rosamund pike needs to play her
My lovely Veronica 🇺🇸
Alan Ladd is awesome. I just bought some of his movies from lovingtheclassics. They should arrive to me soon.
I found the site by searching on google for lovingtheclassics after I saw it in a message board.
Oh Gawd! I used to work with a gorgeous petite stunningly pretty little blond who looked like Verinica Lake; come to think of it, she was actually WAY prettier than Veronica but you get what I mean. Oh the lost opportunities!
oh heck she's cute
how do you do it? is it just twisting?
It is! You just have to look around and find the girls that bring this look alive ;)
@ 0.09 is she bold on the sides?
Hello is it possible if I can use this footage please?
Yes, fine for nonprofit use. For for profit use, you;ll need to investigate copyright status. How are you wanting to use the film?
its for non-profit use as I am doing my own documentary
Be sure to cite the source. Best wishes on your work!
Interesting- Ms Lake passed away in 1973........RIP

@babicherry93 yeaa mee to =)
Looks like a bonnet to me
she's a goddess what a fuckin legend
the time a hairstyle could be dangerous lol
We don't have a fashion icon to follow anymore do me? The last I can remember is Britney Spears with her midriff tops.
His hairstyle is soooo beautiful and kinda sexy ngl
Is the narrator Lorne Greene by any chance?
two words, PONY TAIL
A pony tail could still be just as dangerous as long hair.
Narrator sounds like Jose Ferrer.
You DO know there is a whole bunch of us that have done just that? ;-) These girls do still exist.
While I do know girls who have tattoos (not sure what you mean about the pagan harlot statement so I'll just skip it), I don't. And neither do many of the ladies that visit my channel for styling tips. ;-)
Although I agree with the bit about welfare check collectors, the workforce seen in this video was very different. The women in this video were required to work, to hold up the fort, if you will. While the men were away fighting in the war, some women were the ones building the weaponry and airplanes. As soon as the war was over, the working women went back to their homes and tended to their husbands and children, to what is now known as the 50s housewife.
Hahah "valuable time is wasted"
just a hairnet or cap would do the job -- silly
Any woman loves to see a man in a strapping suit. It's an immediate turn on. Always strive to look your best even if it isn't the most expensive clothing in the world. :)
Victory roll.....didn't she end her days as a waitress?
sounds like Orson Welles....
Veronica Lake was a fine-looking chick. Imagine any of today's self-centered stars changing their hair for the better of all. Not.
I miss real women
So sad Hollywood made her change her hair. They took a pretty young girl and made her and look like an old lady. So sad that's just a disgusting old lady's hairdo they gave her in my opinion.
