My gosh, this woman had class. Just look at the way she appeared on stage dressed so finely and elegant. I’ve no idea why looking your best in public ever went out of fashion. Back a couple years ago, I attended an afternoon tea at the Plaza Hotel, NYC and both myself and my then girlfriend were dressed to the nines for the occasion. While others were dressed beautifully as well, to my shock, even in a well established and upper class hotel such as the Plaza, people were showing up in jeans and casual t shirts looking like they were attending a baseball game. Society has really eroded.

    • @maureenc1284

Had the same thing happen in Boston. Went to a venue and made a huge deal about how amazing people would dress. There were people in shorts and one man carrying his newspaper.

Incredible woman. The cheekbones are like you say like cut glass but it looks like she has had the procedure called The Buckle. The Buckle seemingly involved taking out your back teeth, top and bottom, which drew in your face.

I'd never heard of this lady til I saw this. She cuts an extraordinary figure - when she comes on she looks like she has stepped out of a history book! Dressed like it's still 1910, but she is so with it and down to earth and witty! What a marvellous woman! Definitely going to find out more about her! British women from the first half of the century were made of something else, they really were. People like her and Vita Sackville West, and even my friends godmother... they were indestructible, dazzling, no-nonsense human beings that danced through life blithely ignoring every health warning, doing just whatever the hell they wanted and somehow outliving everyone.

You gotta remember these women went through the suffragette movement, civil rights, two world wars as well as Korea and Vietnam, the women's liberation movement, the invention of the bra... if they can make it through that, they can make it through anything.

I wish we could just let actresses get old. And women musicians too. It's regrettable that right now they all go thru a stage in their 30s & 40's where their familiar beloved faces become literally unrecognizable due to cosmetic surgery. I'm happy that Madonna's happy, but what I wouldn't give to see her beautiful real face as she ages.
Older women who are beautiful...it's such a particular beauty. Different from youth & beauty, but also so very clearly not that different. Still breathtaking, plus all that experience, wisdom & the wealth of stories to tell. Estelle Winwood is glorious here, & her physical fragility is contrasted with such enormous strength of character & mind.

One thing I notice about people who live an extremely long time and stay in good health is that they just enjoy life, day to day, down to the simple things, and don't spend a lot of time thinking about things that bother them or who did them dirty, who owes them an apology...etc. And when they're asked about those things, they blank out. In those young people enjoyed hearing the stories from the 'old timers' like Merve had on his show here. Now I don't think the kids would give a show like this 5 minutes. Hell they don't watch what's going on today, their on their cell phones or whatever.

2:28 - I know how she felt about not going to see films anymore because she's gotten used to all of it. That's how I feel these days - like I've seen it all, I don't need anything new. I really love discovering old films, such as "The Children's Hour" which I just watched today for the first time. Great stuff.
