Nr 750 was the first production bike with under seat exhausts. It's not a completely different engine to the 888, it's merely an evolution of the Desmoquattro.

When I was 18 years old, on the very first day at university (engineering...) my fellow student arrived with a brand new 916. 20 years later, I got a 998 and a 748. Such stunningly beautiful bikes!

The first bikes with underseat exhausts were the race replicas of the mid 80's, the Rd500, Rg500 and Ns400. The road legal version of the Nr750 didn't appear until 1991.

I am no expert (at all) ... but a couple of things here I would question. First MC with under-seat exhaust? (I understand that Tamburini actually said he used the Honda 750 as an inspiration in his under-seat design). Simple to tear-down? (Well, easy to get the panels off, yeah, but "easy tear-down"? It's a Ducati??). I think anything with a limited run will go up in value because it's a finite supply. I don't think the SPS will get to the ranks of Desmo - but for my money, it is a better-looking machine. With so many variants like 748-9/996-8, there are some you can own to ride. One day I'll have a yellow 748 - what a piece of art.

Some inaccurate facts in there. The first generation SP did not have a numbered plaque on the top yolk. This came on the SP3 onwards. Heads do not have to come off to check or adjust valve clearances. I owned an early SP till around 2012 and regret selling it on but thats life.

Rob Low bar Vespa ‘etc .. and a list l could go on .. the NR looked awful .. and just wasn’t available..unless you owned a company or two ..
The mk1 fire blade was a huge jump .. bit Honda just didn’t fire the soul up ....something the Italians do well ..it’s such a simple bike too ..lve owned my spook 20 years ! The only thing that broke was a tiny o ring on the clutch push rod .. and l thrashed it ..or cruised ..top tool .

To own Ducati homologation specials is to hit your head (and wallet) with a hammer since a couples years later SP, SPS, or R technology becomes baseline production for standard models. Skip the 916SPS and by a 998, with the same performance and easier maintenance. And PS, yes a 916 will hang with any bike in a corner, but as soon as the corner straightens, even your basic modern 1000 will vanish in front of your 916 Speciale Productionne.

It’s not super rare. It’s not a good investment. Buy it and ride it and love it. Don’t buy it looking for appreciation. You don’t have to keep it all stock - change whatever you want and make it yours. If you don’t understand what this bike is, stay away from it. It’s only for some people. Definitely not investors.
