Availability mostly. So much of it was culled to prevent the spread of dutch elm disease. Also it is highly prone to wood boring insects so has to be stored very carefully.
If you want no shine and want to stay clear then an oil is your best bet. Possibly a tung oil. First coat thinned down then two coats after or more until you reach your desired finish
Anothe informative video! And seconded on the SimplyOrn8 scribes - they’re awesome!

Thanks for these videos. As a still very new wood worker these videos are so helpful!

Great stuff Dan! I've still got a nice chunk of elm burl offcut you gave me a while back. I'll cut it up and stabilise it soon.
Have fun with it buddy 😊
Quite nice - Elm, I’ve got an odd little bit of something I’ll photograph for you to help with - I’ve no idea what it is 🥰👍🌲🦊🌲
Lool forward to it.
Beautiful timber. Oooh do one on bog oak 😁
Sure...if you send me some 😊
@@WonkyWorkshop if I had some I would 🤣
Nice one Dan, I see you're nearly at 400 subs 👍😁
Nearly 😊
Suggestions for finishing it? Something clear, low or no gloss, but brings out the grain?
