- Two teenage girls, formerly best friends, got into an argument at a smoke shop in Columbus, Ohio in 2023. The altercation escalated when then-18-year-old Bryanna Barozzini stabbed 17-year-old Halia Culbertson in the neck after taking the spat outside. Barozzini initially claimed the stabbing was in self-defense and almost stood trial for murder until she took a guilty plea for involuntary manslaughter. Law&Crime’s Jesse Weber breaks down the case with renowned defense attorney Diane Menasche.

when i read about this story in the news, I was thinking she would get time served. Seeing the footage, the victim is even more of an aggressor than the news described. Barozzini shouldve gotten off, wtf, that girl was so aggressive and hostile. She had every right to defend herself and she had to arm herself bc this girl was threatening physical violence against her and stalking her at home and in public.

Yes, she was 17, and her death was a horrible tragedy. That being said, she was the aggressor. This girl defended herself.

The video shows the deceased was the aggressor. It didn't warrant being stabbed, but I understand more now how the judge sentenced 3 years. I'm not saying that I agree, just that I understand better.
Yeah I was initially shocked by the 3 year sentence, but when you watch the video it doesn't paint the best picture of the victim. Sorry I know that's a horrible thing to say but we gotta look at the facts here. The victim confronted the defendant at a convenience store and started an altercation, causing her to get kicked out of the convenience store. She then waited for the defendant outside of the convenience store and refused to leave. When the defendant left the convenience store the victim physically assaulted the defendant and pursued her as the defendant attempted to walk away. If this went to trial there's a real chance it would have been a full acquittal on self defense grounds.

The family of the girl who died is in denial. They seem to be ignoring the video of the incident. The deceased was clearly the aggressor. The defendant was going to leave and then kept backing away from the girl who was much bigger than her. The knife, which was one she used in her job was brandished as a warning to get the other girl to back off. After being physically assaulted, she finally had enough. The end result was tragic, but I think it was a clear case of self defense. I hope the decedent serves a year of that 3-year sentence, at most.
Decedent means a person who has died. The defendant was sentenced to 3 years

Halia's family is to blame. They did not teach their daughter right from wrong. If the parents taught their children not to be bullies , Halia would still be a live today.
This is clear self defense. The deceased was much larger, the aggressor and actually assaulted the smaller girl. The only thing she should have been charged with was leaving the scene and destruction of evidence.

The reason she took the plea deal was due to consciousness of guilt. One could interpret her text messages as pre meditated murder in that she wanted the other woman to lash out at her so she could stab her.

I think the problem was that she didn’t contact the police and instead went home and tried to cover it up by washing her clothes and such. Maybe it would’ve been a different story had she called 911 instead as soon as it happened.

After watching the video I think 3 years is appropriate. The girl she stabbed basically stalked her outside of a gas station, physically assaulted her, and pursued her as she tried to flee before the stabbing.

The knife texts were probably an acknowledgement that her threatener was about a foot bigger than her and an attempted pre-emptive dissuasion of an expected attack. Her attacker was overwhelming.

I don't think the victim expected a knife involved or that the girl was going to use it. However, we have to teach our children to walk away when the anger feels uncontrollable. Why didn't she just walk away and speak the next day when more calm. And who is the guy who was basically useless in stopping this from going that far. Watching this tells me that yes, both girls should have behaved better BUT their own parents caused this. Why? You teach and educate your children on what is appropriate emotional regulation, not to bully, how to behave around others and the fact this happened tells me there was no parental responsibility; no adults teaching these kids to grow up to be real people. Anger and bravado is not how to do things. This is just a tragic example of how we don't behave.

Right, because she was being stalked and targeted for a physical attack. What do you want her to do? Take a beating from a much larger, aggressive girl. F that. People have an obligation to defend themselves.

I don’t know, the fact that she said in a text message prior that she would stab her and then that happened, that kind of looks like premeditated murder to me
But was it because the girl was stalking her, was she warning her she would defend herself against it if she didn't stop? I agree it shows it wasn't self defense in the moment tho if that's the case and 3 years is literally ridiculous
For the family that lost their daughter I’m pretty sure you’ll be on UA-cam reading all the comments …….take this one to heart you need to control your children, especially the brother if it wasn’t for him encouraging his sister, this would’ve never happened……. 3 years makes sense. It was INvoluntary Manslaughter. Self Defense and not planned. The gal in yellow was the aggressor. She was going towards her wanting a fight. The other one kept backing up, she didn't want to fight! So....she pulls out a knife to back her off, it hit her and she's dead. She didn't PLAN on it, she was protecting herself.
People need to stop being so violent t period.

Seems crazy that she would get any time if the argument here the stabbing was in self defence. Why are prosecuting people for that!
@eloisecromwell4201 Agreed. But it's because she took a plea deal. She probably got nervous when the judge was going to allow the jury to see the text she sent a couple of weeks prior.
She wrote that if the other girl kept messing with her or showed up at her house again, she was going to stab/cut her.
But I took that as the other girl was the aggressor. So maybe a jury would have seen it that way, too.
