Whenever I go to a zoo I always stay at the orangutan area if people ask me why I say that I am visiting my cousins.

The orang exhibit is where I spend the most time at any zoo. Chimps usually 2nd. First time I got to see an orang was at Edinburgh zoo. They had an older male sitting in a tire (sorry, a tyre), watching TV and remaining completely motionless. Tried to get some movement out of him by dancing around, waving my arms etc but it wasn't until I got closer to the glass and started making faces that anything happened. Without moving a muscle or even taking his eyes off the TV he suddenly curled his top lip way up and back, almost touching his nose then immediately returned to his previous expression and continued staying motionless. Everyone who saw it cracked up. His reaction was so simple but it was a moment that has always stuck with me.

That’s how they transport them at the Orangutan Jungle School in Indonesia. They’re all orphans and they absolutely freak out if they get separated. So they chauffeur them around like that for a few years.

to people who say "poor orangutans", let me tell you. lots of modern zoos care for animals that were hurt or abandoned it the wild. it is human compassion not to leave them to die. second of all, I think before we can ask to treat animals with kindness we need to turn to ourselves first. a lot of humans live and are forced to work in worse conditions than these animals.
They get slaughtered in their forest homes everyday for greed, timber, and palm oil. The oldest rainforest on earth plowed to the ground. Humans are a virus

I'm from Sabah, Borneo. My father had childhood photo with Orang Utan in 1960s. I think Orang Utan can found in forest nearby his village back then. But now, we can only watch Orang Utan in Zoo.

I really don’t know why everyone is freaking out about the first video. Orangutans are EXTREMELY intelligent and would be able to be taught to do that stuff without torture and probably don’t mind it at all. As long as it’s in a good enclosure and is fed well, which it looks like it is, then it’s fine. Just because it’s an animal doing something we don’t usually see, it can be fine. I’m sorry, but i dont see any cruelty.

remember you animal lovers, torture is not the only way to train an orangutan. the orangutan couldve been imitating humans’ movements and such. if the orangutan at the beginning was being abused, it would go crazy and attack everyone around. please keep an open mind and dont jump to conclusions. i know the orangutan had jeans but thats about all the evidence of abuse, and its not even that big of a deal. the humans could just help the orangutan pull off the jeans.

Idk what's sadder, the first orangutan trained and being exploited for monetary gain, or the people who don't see anything wrong with it and proceed to insult people to call out animal abuse. All orangutan species are critically endangered and should NOT be used as props for ignorant tourists. Same goes for every wild animal that's trained to interact with people and used as a photo prop - it's all abuse, you don't have to hit an animal to abuse it.
