There are other worlds than these. Stephen King's The Dark Tower, the ambitious and expansive story from one of the world's most celebrated authors, makes its launch to the big screen. The last Gunslinger, Roland Deschain (Idris Elba), has been locked in an eternal battle with Walter O'Dim, also known as the Man in Black (Matthew McConaughey), determined to prevent him from toppling the Dark Tower, which holds the universe together. With the fate of the worlds at stake, good and evil will collide in the ultimate battle as only Roland can defend the Tower from the Man in Black.

They should have given it the Game of Thrones treatment and made it a series on HBO or Netflix.
Wow, the William "The Monster" Bibbiani looks so harmless out of his bloodied overall.
I think Bibbs brought up a good point about how fans feel about an author's work being adapted into a film. I think what matters is not the fact that the story has changes, but if the changes are made to enhance the story or take away from the story.
Idris Elba needs a better agent. He's one of the best actors of his generation, but man, he's been in a lot of so-so movies lately. He's been really wasted.
americanslime first Ghost Rider 2 then this
He has to strike while the iron is hot. Money is money.
Complete fuck up. The Dark Tower series is one of the most immersive, insane and brilliant epics ever conceived, and they represent that with this middle of the road, generic action movie. When people who haven't read the books watch this, that'll badly reflect their opinions of the books. It should have been an HBO series, why the fuck couldn't they do that? Would have been a perfect follow up after Game of Thrones finishes.
I wish more people shared your opinions about this. King spites his readers every time he makes a live action adaptation. We'll get the gripes about Shawshank and Green Mile. They were excellent, but they were different types of King Stories. I haven't seen King release anything worth anything in years. His latest best film was the Mist (Not to be confused with the TV show which is fucking garbage) But I can promise you that holding King accountable for doing this to his readers triggers a lot of people.
What amazed me is that the film seemed to overly keen to remind fans of the book of the interesting stuff they cut. At one point Roland's watching an advert with a talking cartoon raccoon and he asks if animals talk in this other world, now fans of the series that a talking Raccoon called Oy is one of the main characters.
18% on Rotten Tomato. You're welcome.
The Gunslinger is already a great script. Why they decided to do some weird sort reboot instead of just taking beat for beat the first Dark Tower book is beyond me.
"Spaghetti film festival" sounds like something I would definitely go to.
I'm fucking pissed. Why would they turn "the Dark Tower" into a generic movie? How is that even possible?
Sony made it, what did you expect?
The movie is fine. I really enjoyed the action. The acting is good and there are two emotional scenes between the kid and Idris Elba. The problem is the world building and the pacing. The story is really straight forward, it just goes by fast.
Last Action Hero is criminally underrated.
J.A. Contes yes it is I love this movie but it was ahead of its time. Imagine Last Action Hero if it has been made today? :)
I want to see Idris Elba's dark tower...
And the award for most repeated joke goes to...
Alexander Forbes oh, I hadn't seen it before, thought I was being clever
tropicAces Sure you havent seen it before. We all believe you.
tropicAces aGAY
Coach JG it's 2017 bro, don't hate me cuz I'm fabulous
PG-13 trash rushed out to make a quick buck while shitting on the source material. One to download and not pay a penny for. King has forgotten the face of his father.
Download? I wont do even that, I'll wait for cinemasins to roast it.
Your last sentence made me literally laugh out loud!
As a fan of King and this series, from the second I saw the first trailer I had my doubts, it showed that the Studio wanted to copy the Marvel formula, and by reading different reviews, they went for that route instead of staying true to the rich source material, the fact that this is a continuation of the books and not an adaptation of the first novel scream that they never knew how to adapt the books in the first place, and then doing a TV show explaining everything because that's more easy...
... fucking Sony man.
Back when Christy still had her ever changing drinking vessels.
So this is the Ralph Bakshi Lord of the Rings. At least, in 30 years we'll have a really awesome version then.
This story can't work in a movie. If there was ever a book series made for tv, it's DT.
And it deserves it, better than asoiaf.
What is "Linoleum knife" and why is someone wearing a T-shirt of it.....
It's a movie review website and the guy wearing the shirt (Alonzo Duralde') runs it.
Shadowman4710 Oh , thanks ...... I took it very literally and thought it was a type of knife brand ...... Nonetheless I really like and appreciate his reviews as Alonzo gives a good insight without spoiling anything......
It's the name of his podcast
That's also the kind of knife Hannibal Lecter used on FBI Will Graham...
Dang, Bibs rocks a suit pretty well.
Big fan of the books, but I've been lowering my expectations for this one for months now. I still can't help but be disappointed by the news that it's totally generic. Goddamn.
If they straight up adapted The Gunslinger it would cost half as much as would have gotten more interest with the cliffhanger
Bibs can be nails on a chalk board.... he forgot the "Key" in the name "Bakshi" an animator more important then bibs.
I read the 4 of the books, although I wish the movie had went a different way, its wasn't bad. Cant wait for IT to come out!
Why was Alonso and Ben on this? It seemed like it was the Bibs and Christy show.
'At least it's short.' - Lol! They should put that on the posters! :))))
That is a John Oliver type line. On a promo for his own HBO show, he said, "Of all of the shows on Sunday night... this is one of them."
Goddamm Bibbs liked this shit more than Detroit
Christy should not wear flip-flops on camera again. Just. Never. Again.
"few dollars more" melody in the trailer
Drinking water out of a jar might just some up this entire channel perfectly
Read all the books 3 times over the years. Still enjoyed the movie for what it was. Had no expectations that they could cram the entire story into 90mins.
What you is talking about? Is 8 books, not 3!
McConaughey advertises for Lincoln, not Mercury. Mercurys have not been produced since 2011. Every time I see a black Lincoln with tinted windows on the road, I assume McConaughey is behind the wheel and make a comment to my passengers to that affect. "Hey kids, wave at Mathew McConaughey as we pass him here. Hi Mathew!"
Bibbs is Dr. Marvin Monroe from The Simpsons
I would have prefer if The Dark Tower premiere first as a TV Miniseries like all of Stephen King's original ones like Salem's Lot, The Stand,etc.. then made a movie following from were the miniseries left off. but still I can't wait to see it.
Ah Sony strikes again with another film they fucked up with great potential.
The movie may not make someone want to read the books but trailer kinda did for me so I may leave it at that.
Did Bibbiani just call Ralph Bakshi, Ralph Bacchi?
mercury? you mean lincoln
I thought this movie was ok. Not a fav but I didn't hate it TBH. I think all 3 main actors were really good.
Could someone please get Christy a cup or something so she doesn't have to drink out of a fucking mason jar lol.
You mean to tell me to base a movie off of an 8 book series and make one hour and a half movie isn't good? Say it ain't so
Ben Back Mother F's!!!!!!
Acting is terrible? Are you serious? You can't be serious!
What is Bibbs smoking with a 6.9? Christy's score is way more believable.
I was watching the previews and was waiting for Matthew McConaughey to say "Alright, alright, alright, Alright!!!!..." From then on; I wasn't interested..
I like Bibbs. Bibbs is cool.
I was lookin for a 1.27 avg score
funny how the internet has given so much power to punks who would otherwise be in their basements doing nothing.
There was no character development. Also, why does Walter want to destroy everything and why is everybody on his team cool with it?
Bullion9999 In the books, Walter is sort of a field general for the Crimson King. Walter actually doesn't want to destroy the Tower, but to enter it and climb to the top in the hope it will make into a God. The King does want to destroy it, so that the Universe crumbles and he can rule over the ashes.
So this i the 4th book to movie adaptation that Nikolaj Arcel has fucked up. Maybe he should stop doing that
Ben glad you piped up, forgot you were there for the last 3 years.
That lengthy critique and it gets a 6.9?
cauchamar muh sweejeez.
The woman gave it a 2 you dolt.
I thought this was going to be great. Was expecting at least 60-70% favorable (which is decent for action film). But sub 20%? Yikes.
I knew this movie was going to get reviewed badly lol, it's too ambitious a film to try to make, trying to condense 7 extraordinarily long books with honestly like 15-20 more books of other material they could've added in... and do it all in one movie? Especially when the source material has such big nerds interested in it to begin with.
This isn't based on the book series directly. There are similarities but it's more of a sequel if you catch my drift...
so wanted it to be good....
is this an official comment then?
I hope it's better than the preview because that trailer looks really stupid.
How does Akiva Goldsman get to work this long?He makes one shit movie after another and yet he still gets to work.
Christy is unbearable to listen to at this point.
I've read all TDT books and I felt very entertained watching this film version/potential continuation of the books ...its a good movie
Every summer movie explodes into CGI nonsense.
Just use a bloody cup.
I'm with Christy on this one, Bibbs was way too charitable with this movie. It's boring, terribly edited, terribly written, and McConaughey's acting feels like he already knew they were shooting a shitty movie.
This film was painfully mediocre. That's about it, folks. Maybe a director's cut would help and bring some meat to it. Absolutely not the epic it should have been
Mason Jar Lemire
Is Stephen King the most over-hyped author on the planet?
+vicious I read about 30 pages of Rowling's first book. That was enough. There's no telling what will appeal to the general public.
The book series is SO good
Derek Williamson a classic for sure unlike this terrible film.
Look, the movie is an atrocity bearing the title of Dark Tower, ok?
The books are awesome.
I read the first book decades ago when it came out and it was, IMO, a convoluted mess. Stephen King is brilliant, but it's a narrow brilliance. Kerouac needed punctuation; King needs structure and a point to his narratives.
Bibs, just give up on that beard, man. It's not working.
Wrong. This was well done and the treatment was correct. You are right in that its a Pilot type of thing but that will get you to either read the rest of the story which they did not ruin for you or you can wait for the series. It's a fun summer movie that makes the books, even more, fun to talk and think about.
Did they at least have the scene from Tull? That's the main reason that I want to see the movie.
What fuckin books are you readin, bruh??? Because this was trash. Fuck a "fun Summer movie" The Dark Tower should never be a "fun summer movie" This needs to be cancelled from all history and the books need to remain unsullied. Seriously, someone paying you to say this shit?
They don't :( This movie has nothing to do with the books at all.
The movie fucking sucks.
Tobey Starburst indeed.
yeah it's not mediocre. it's really bad. there's nothing there. it's a celebration of the dull. the only reason I give any star(s) is the fact that there is some ok craftsmanship in music, cinematography, cgi, though some of it's shit as well. 3/10.
They turned Stephen King's most overrated works into a YA movie. Hilarious.
oh man. I wanted to like this movie. who knows maybe i will. gotta say though I trust what the flick.
It's actually pretty good and sets up a lot without ruining the books which are very good.
BULLSHIT!
The books are way better than this atrocity!
GARBAGE-MOVIE! ONE THE WORST OF THIS YEAR!
What a shock, considerig Stephen King fucked the whole series over after 'The Wasteland' (book 3). The idea of a bad movie coming from a King book just never occured to me.
Honestly, he should just cash his royalties and stop pretending he has a book or even a short story left in him and *should* have back in the 1990's. 'Stranger Things' has been better Stephen King material than anything we've seen as a direct adaptation.
Be careful you don't choke on your own sarcasm, sir. But nicely played nonetheless...
I disagree with this, I think 11/22/63 is comfortably up there with his best books.
Revival and Under the Dome were great you swine.
Kei Kurono Sure they were.
***** I've heard good things, but doesn't his apparent favorite music and some other interests come directly from his dad? I'm not bothered by him reworking a mythology, but I hope he adds his own imprint to it. You can never be Lovecraft, but you can always model you're own stuff on what he, Clark Ashton Smith, and Derleth gave us as a blueprint.
a movie critics hate? ooooh its going be good. still only going to stream it though. i mean guns, westerners, bunch of dudes. no thank you. but its idris so ill check it out for him
Why the f. is she drinking from a giant jar?
big king fan but the dark tower books were always awful
No.
Wizard & Glass was fantastic.
6.9 is crazy high. 3.5 at best. Boring and generic
They hated it.........which probably means the movie is awesome.
dont let the king fan boys fool u, the book is shit too
