  • The Dark Tower starring Idris Elba, Matthew McConaughey, and Abbey Lee directed by Nikolaj Arcel is reviewed by Christy Lemire (www.ChristyLemi...), Alonso Duralde (TheWrap and Linoleum Knife podcast), William Bibbiani (Crave Online) and Ben Mankiewicz (Turner Classic Movies).
Read what other critics had to say: www.rottentoma...
There are other worlds than these. Stephen King's The Dark Tower, the ambitious and expansive story from one of the world's most celebrated authors, makes its launch to the big screen. The last Gunslinger, Roland Deschain (Idris Elba), has been locked in an eternal battle with Walter O'Dim, also known as the Man in Black (Matthew McConaughey), determined to prevent him from toppling the Dark Tower, which holds the universe together. With the fate of the worlds at stake, good and evil will collide in the ultimate battle as only Roland can defend the Tower from the Man in Black.

They should have given it the Game of Thrones treatment and made it a series on HBO or Netflix.

I think Bibbs brought up a good point about how fans feel about an author's work being adapted into a film. I think what matters is not the fact that the story has changes, but if the changes are made to enhance the story or take away from the story.

Idris Elba needs a better agent. He's one of the best actors of his generation, but man, he's been in a lot of so-so movies lately. He's been really wasted.

Complete fuck up. The Dark Tower series is one of the most immersive, insane and brilliant epics ever conceived, and they represent that with this middle of the road, generic action movie. When people who haven't read the books watch this, that'll badly reflect their opinions of the books. It should have been an HBO series, why the fuck couldn't they do that? Would have been a perfect follow up after Game of Thrones finishes.

I wish more people shared your opinions about this. King spites his readers every time he makes a live action adaptation. We'll get the gripes about Shawshank and Green Mile. They were excellent, but they were different types of King Stories. I haven't seen King release anything worth anything in years. His latest best film was the Mist (Not to be confused with the TV show which is fucking garbage) But I can promise you that holding King accountable for doing this to his readers triggers a lot of people.

What amazed me is that the film seemed to overly keen to remind fans of the book of the interesting stuff they cut. At one point Roland's watching an advert with a talking cartoon raccoon and he asks if animals talk in this other world, now fans of the series that a talking Raccoon called Oy is one of the main characters.

The Gunslinger is already a great script. Why they decided to do some weird sort reboot instead of just taking beat for beat the first Dark Tower book is beyond me.

The movie is fine. I really enjoyed the action. The acting is good and there are two emotional scenes between the kid and Idris Elba. The problem is the world building and the pacing. The story is really straight forward, it just goes by fast.

As a fan of King and this series, from the second I saw the first trailer I had my doubts, it showed that the Studio wanted to copy the Marvel formula, and by reading different reviews, they went for that route instead of staying true to the rich source material, the fact that this is a continuation of the books and not an adaptation of the first novel scream that they never knew how to adapt the books in the first place, and then doing a TV show explaining everything because that's more easy...
    ... fucking Sony man.

McConaughey advertises for Lincoln, not Mercury. Mercurys have not been produced since 2011. Every time I see a black Lincoln with tinted windows on the road, I assume McConaughey is behind the wheel and make a comment to my passengers to that affect. "Hey kids, wave at Mathew McConaughey as we pass him here. Hi Mathew!"

Bullion9999 In the books, Walter is sort of a field general for the Crimson King. Walter actually doesn't want to destroy the Tower, but to enter it and climb to the top in the hope it will make into a God. The King does want to destroy it, so that the Universe crumbles and he can rule over the ashes.

I knew this movie was going to get reviewed badly lol, it's too ambitious a film to try to make, trying to condense 7 extraordinarily long books with honestly like 15-20 more books of other material they could've added in... and do it all in one movie? Especially when the source material has such big nerds interested in it to begin with.

Honestly, he should just cash his royalties and stop pretending he has a book or even a short story left in him and *should* have back in the 1990's. 'Stranger Things' has been better Stephen King material than anything we've seen as a direct adaptation.
