Charts. Lists. Who cares? It's insightful and informative.
These videos don't need to be longer than they are, the length is perfect, BUT I NEED them to be longer because I can't get enough of Roth and Dan talking about box office! I could watch this for hours!
Mr. Hollywood: SCREW AUGUST. AUGUST DOESN'T MAKE ME MONEY!
*Chugs Monster and Diet Coke*
rifkadm this comment doesn't make sense take it back 😂😂
Tfw you didn't watch the last episode of Flick Bait
In Greece this is literal, all big movies are delayed to September because no one goes to the cinema in late July and August, everyone goes to their villages, people don't really want to go to the cinema in the summer heat, and the open summer cinemas have mostly closed because you can't enjoy a movie with a screen like that or with such a low sound.
More like Mentos and Coke.
rifkadm +
um i'm sorry but we experienced a huge hurricane here in Texas over the weekend and its getting worse so we never had time to go to the movies
Sorry to hear that you were affected.
keep safe,keep dry
I love how despicable me 3 is about to break a billion, and no one is talking about it
x6x batman wait it is wtf
Amerul Aidil But first we have to go through Minions 2 ugh 😑😠
shhhh...lets keep it that way
To be fair Minions made over a billion, so it shouldn't be that surprising
mk6rfc1 Ya but it's domestic numbers are weak compared to 2,minions,secret life of pets and sing
Box office about to get that spike once everyone's movie passes arrive!
Joshua Singh Reviews yep lol
Meanwhile Memorial Day thru July there were multiple big movies EVERY week. Studios need to spread these things out.
For real! For an example Spider-Man: HC (July 7) War for the Planet of the Apes (July 14) Dunkirk (July 21). Studios need to spread out their releases.
BlueNuggetBoy Productions That's probably what happened. Oh well. I hope these studios will learn to not cram these movies during the summer
My theater is getting Wind River this weekend.
We re-got Baby Driver, Wonder Woman, & Despicable Me.
KimOlson1993 Mines did too.
I really hope Wind River is killing it at the box office. Best film I've seen this year.
Jake G 2187 i'm really interested in seeing it
Jake G 2187 really? Interesting lol
IT will soon wake the box office up from its coma.
cHad30000 i hope
I need help
Im a fan of the it book and i want to see it, but i scare easily
@cHad
What will?
+Keith MacDonald , 'IT' has a good mix of possibilities to become a big time hit. It will depend a lot on rotten tomatoes and word of mouth to last beyond the first couple of weeks. I like what the trailers and promotions have been selling, and hopefully enough other people do to.
This is such a great show! Dan and Roth I love your analysis about the box office! Hollywood really should have opened some other mid budget movie this month. Also would love if you guys did a video about the upcoming Toronto, Venice, and Telluride Film Festivals!
Is the weather also playing into part of this. Most theaters were closed this weekend in Houston (the 4th Largest City in America)
Completely agree
Yes the weather obviously played a part...not that it would have been a big weekend either way, but there are literally MILLIONS of people down here in Texas that could have potentially went to the movies and couldn't...not saying this wkend wouldn't have sucked either way, but it for sure made somewhat of a difference - then the fight, no blockbuster movies, Netflix, etc
William Keaton and wind river is great, that'd be a good to check out before It...I also still want to see Logan Lucky, good time, and the T2 3D IMAX asap, just had more pressing life stuff this past weekend, but maybe this next weekend
Not disputing that, just simply saying that there would have been more money made at the box office had there not been a hurricane...probably another couple million dollars - not saying it would have saved the weekend
Agreed the lowest summer for box office in a long time. But Experts estimated the flood in Houston took 5% of the sales off the table, the same amount as the fight. Not just "weather".. catastrophic flooding. Perfect storm for box office low.
Did the Mayweather McGregor fight on Saturday and the Thrones finale Sunday contribute to this record low box office?
timotei360 and Harvey hitting Houston
timotei360
Hell yeah
Yes, no doubt
Surprised that you didn't bring up the Mayweather vs McGregor fight. It was shown in around 500 theaters and had a per screen average of about $5,000 with only one showing. Love the show, look forward to it every week!
Birth of the Dragon was terrible.
I saw Ingrid Goes West on Saturday, and agree with Dan and Roth, great movie. There were only about five other people in the theatre with me when I saw it.
The month is cursed and hurricane Harvey has is in the 3rd coast too busy to go to the movies
Love these videos. Keep up the great work Screen Junkies News :D
This was the first Charting with Dan show I've watched, and I loved it! Looking forward to more box office analysis and more of Roth and Dan in general.
I saw 2 movies over the Weekend, War for the Planet of the Apes and Wind River, Loved them both and Last Week I saw Logan Lucky
Metal ZEO You must have a movie pass or something
Just saw Birth of The Dragon, it was decent though for a 2:30pm showing, I was surprised there was only 2 in the theater in NYC.
I really enjoy listening to Dan and Roth talk about charts.
Pixar and the Harry Potter films both had multiple November entries , so the idea of the Summer Box office has long been dead
When you think about it summer movie seasons are now starting a lot earlier like around February and March as well as April and May. So the box office wise between February and May is kind of the summer movie season. This year was a little different where they stretched the summer movie season to July and films coming out in July 2017 kind of ended the summer movie season.
I'm sure it's probably said before but the reason why box office numbers have been dwindling over the last few years is that people don't have that much disposable income so they have to pick and choose a lot of the things they do and see
I blame Rachel Blunt
Cillian Brouder who
theokchannel Steven Soderbergh's _'ghost'_ writer
y'all have convinced me to go see ingrid goes west tonight!
Don't mind me, I'm just waiting for IT.
Shellyman Vol.2 and kingsman?
Charting with Dan continues to slay my personal box office of favorite things on youtube. :D
Boxing on Saturday and Thrones on Sunday.
Really want to see Wind River but don't know if anywhere close to me is showing it!!
Too many movies I wanted to see came out at once! Had to wait on Alien, Dunkirk, Baby Driver, Apes, The Little Hours, and Despicable Me 3 because they all assaulted me at the same time as Spider-Man and Girls Trip. Didn't even bother with Pirates or The Dark Tower because of the reviews. But if some of them had waited until August or September they could have gotten my money.
Everything is great but did You watched Wolf Worrior 1??
Despicable Me 3; minions weren't the issue, it was his brother! Terrible character
"You always wanna take advantage of the kids being out of school"
Steve stevenson 😂😂
Not me who said it.
I did an Elizabeth Olsen double feature with Wind River and Ingrid goes west!! Money well spent, both are fantastic! Let down by Dunkirk though. Nothing horrible about it, just not a lot of meat on the bones. Probably never need to see it again.
Still cant believe people in the usa are calling Dunkirk an obscure event.
You guys should do podcasts of these and the daily news videos!
People should go watch Good Time. Great Movie. Robert Pattinson is so underrated.
Great show! I'd love to see a Top 10 years in movie gross (adjusted for inflation) sometime. TY and keep up the great work!
I'll be glad when the summer season stops being a thing. There's always too many movies that I definitely want to see on the big screen in the summer. If they were spread out, I'd have more time to see more of them.
+ScreenJunkies News ,Monday isn't complete till we get some #chartingwithdan !! Thanks for the great work (: The August movie box office seems to reflect a level of fatigue and disinterest from the general public. I wonder if the Cinema Score numbers are down for this month, compared to this month last year? I can't remember many years that so many big name comedy and action movies have failed so badly with audiences. I know that most films are locked in to their release dates, but how can studios think that packing so many movies in July is good for business? Valerian and War For The Planet Of The Apes could have done so much better over the last two weeks. +Roth Cornet , +Dan Murrell , I'm very disappointed that you both didn't follow up and watch Wolf Warrior & Wolf Warrior 2. I was looking forward to your takes on those movies.
IT, Kingsman, Blade Runner, Thor, Justice League, and Star Wars are gonna send the fall/end of year box office through the roof.
Logan lucky is a great film. Check it out if haven't already.
mike lyles i saw it on Friday. It's one of my favorite movies of the year so far, and one of my favorite comedies in a while! It was so much better than The Hitman's Bodyguard!
Literally just saw it today. I would recommend it too!
It has to do with the fact it wasn't marketed heavily. I would call it one of the better films of this summer, and one that did not disappoint (unlike Valerian). With so many sequels and what not, an original film or one based off something not that well known has been a rare treat.
Daniel Craig is having so much fun with this role. Great assembly cast. A Original hilarious story.
The other reason why I wanted to see it. It looked like such a huge departure from the recent Bond films. The rest of the cast was great too. I was surprised with how gentle Mark Kermod was about Seth MacFarlane's accent, he rips into Russel Crowe a lot when he does a British accent. Maybe he's more forgiving of yanks as apposed to Aussies.
At least it's not Sharting with Dan, lol thanks for the show.
Leap is on Netflix RIGHT NOW but it is called, Ballerina. Why is it now being released in theaters?
1Maenad Not on Netflix in US.
RiverNaiad oh, okay. I have Netflix Caribbean. My daughter and I watched it last month on Netflix.
Are movies releasing to DVD sooner? Because why pay $48 for a family of 4 to see a movie once when in 2 or 3 months you can get it half off or for less than $2 at the rental!?
I feel like this August box office was bad, but some of the movies coming out were not awful. It's just that people didn't go see them or they went and watched something like "Snatched" which you know was bad, but saw it to say "Yeah! It was just as bad as I knew it was going to be." "Logan Lucky" is actually in my top 10 for this year at the moment and it really makes me sad that it didn't place higher. "Baby Driver", "Logan", "Free-Fire"("wide"-release), "Spider-Man:Homecoming", and "John Wick Chapter 2" are also in the top 10 as of now. Still wish I could've seen Dunkirk though. But some of the movies this year could eventually become cult classics, since quite a few of them were not entirely awful films.
oh god. I just realized Screenjunkies used to be Clevvernews
I saw Wind River because I thought it was a prequel to Avengers...👻
I loved Get Out... They talked so much about Ingrid Goes West... that I am going to see it today...
Everyone was off to the eclipse. We were outside en mass.
Maybe if we're lucky this trend will continue and august will become the month for indies to get big and make a name for themselves. I would love that!
Breanna Webber agreed
i saw dunkirk in imax.. im still deaf lol
Obviously because Netflix and other streaming services offer high production value entertainment at a fraction of the cost. This trend will likely continue.
Dan! Per Box Office Mojo August 2016 grossed $1,019,642,249. August 2017 has grossed way more than 272 million. The total box office for the week of August 4th - 10th was 184 million, August 11th - 17th was 171 million, August 18th - 24th was 137 million & this weekend of was 69 million for a total of 561 million.
We're all waiting for our MoviePass cards. Numbers will go up when those arrive.
More people have sth better to do than going to the movies than usual. What a disaster!
Where is Wolf Warrior 2 review? It's not the review we need but the one we deserve.
You know, if Kingsmen: The Golden Circle was moved from September to August, it would've saved it. Though, it's weird how NO ONE is talking about it on any of the UA-cam channels including this one. It seems no one is excited for it or even anticipate to be anything but a blockbuster.
Biggest Bomb of the Summer - Valerian and King Arthur! Congrats Warner Bros and STX Entertainment.
Really? Wind River?
Harvey didn't help. Find the stats on how many people donated money rather than went to the movies.
Wind River is the best movie I've seen this year. Kind of surprised you aren't trumpeting it as much as Ingrid Goes West, etc. Ingrid Goes West is fine, but definitely "too L.A." to have broad appeal, I feel.
Also, Hollywood and Movie Companies need to spread out movies more or even have a more enhanced version of the movie to come out later.
if only you guys could list the movies mentioned at list the indie ones for us to follow
nevermind...got it watching the sec time😎
Charts are legit. Think of Rolling Stone magazine and songs.
What. About. *Worldwide?* Could you guys talk about worldwide in the next videos? I'm not from the U.S., that would mean the world for me (accidental pun that I'm sticking with).
Do you really *have to* see Dunkirk in theaters? I've been too hecking poor to see movies lately and at least no one is saying this of any other good movies this summer :v
Wind River is the best film this year. It needs more attention.
I would have paid to see the final episode of game of thrones in theatres or iMax.
I hope they do an Inhumans type thing with the next season where they show either the premiere or finale in theaters
Dunkirk being on the top five in the USA will certainly not elevate the level of historical knowledge in this country, because Dunkirk is closer to a propaganda movie than something which can be related to the science of HISTORY.
maybe you should just call it statistics/numbers with Dan? they're really great videos either way!
to be far march had some big movies. logan, kong and Band the beast
I watched Wolf Warrior 2 in China. ......its for China just China.
Summer began march 3rd😎 if you catch my drift
Summer blockbusters have collapsed but indies are on the rise, has Alicia Malone personally overthrown the Hollywood elite?
The fight took over the weekend
Crushing pretty hard on Roth Cronet.
2 great movies
1 good movie
worst weekend of 2017
WHAT?!?!
Nicholas Borg wait what were the two great ones?
Logan Lucky and Wind River
Logan lucky was great
Nicholas Borg oh yeah I thought you were talking about movies opening on Friday lol
With Hurricane Harvey hitting this past weekend, it will be a small effect on the box office for a while. I read that 2.3 million people lives in the Houston area. That's a factor but overall, good and interesting movies are what will be well at the box office or at least will have a good chance to do well
Wind River was crazy good
Dude sounds like he's Dark Vader. 😒
The thing about Wind river is a good movie, what's disappointing is that Hawkeye's character could not have played by a real Native actor and or both main characters were Native actors. That would of been a nice conflict between those 2. but
I actually liked Logan Lucky
This summer's movies really sucked just like last year. Niche films and Marvel/DC. It's felt very samey and to be honest, I think the majority of people are getting tired of these "universe" movies.
I dont get studios packing july instead of spreading valerian and apes to august.
Can we have more actual charts(or lists, thats fine) to visualise what you're saying.
Maybe superimposed below you on the main shot, while you guys are talking.
If it's called charting with Dan I guess he should wear a green Tee (to key it out) so they can be shown on his chest but..
...I may have taken this too far.
Just brainstorming.
Some Movies coming out this fall and during the last 4 months will save the box office!
Really interesting turn of events x'j
"best June ever" thank you Wonder Woman and Patty Jenkins!
Ingrid Goes West is fantastic
People.... GO WATCH LOGAN LUCKY or Wind river!
TheFlickinCritic alright
TheNeedmoneybad sorry I apologize
Lol. Are they that good?
Cause they went up against Mayweather-McGregor. $100 per ppv. It's not surprising
Am I the only one who has a crush on Roth?
Well all of Houston was shut down
I mean there weren't any new interesting movies that were coming out anyways
Lucky Logan was fun by the way. Go watch it!
Where can China send their movies? Ummm... how about Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, HK... pretty mucb anywhere in Asia where you have Mandarin speaking communities, right?
2017 the worst year for movies and I think 2018 will do better
