Thanks for the video. This looks like the best video on making a bump key. I am responsible for a building in which we do not have keys for some of the doors. I should now be able to get the knobs off (Schlage SC1) so that I can rekey the locks and move on with other items. Thanks again.
Very slick handling of that bump key! I have never tried this technique but will add it to my wish list for the future. Thanks for another really engaging upload 🙏
Nice work on the key. I think it's fair to point out bump keys will not fair well on a lock with good bitting and or security pins. But most junk residential door locks would be lunch for such a key.
Simple note to forensic locksmith fans: I can tell that this cylinder has been bumped a lot. Note where the shoulder of the key comes in contact with the cylinder. It shows marks from shoulder being slammed into the cylinder face.
Very neat and informative video. I know you said you had only 5 pins in the core when you demoed the bump key but I wish you had showed what kind of bitting those 5 pins where...?
My code cards came with the machine however the root depths charts are easy enough to search for on the internet. Also, if you make an account on lockcodes.com of any of the other sites you can get that info there as well
Awesome video, making bump keys was the first thing that I made, that got me started on my locksport journey. I used a file, but that first time it worked and open a lock, I know I was hooked. 🔓👍😎
@@HelpfulLockPicker I think we would all love to see this the next time you make a bump key video. Perhaps with a trickier lock with tough bitting. That way you can show off quick, successive strikes.
Nice comment & perspective on also cutting tip of key down -- I wonder if that bump key you had made at the Kiosk key machine a long time ago cut the tip down as well? Also nice shots with 2 cameras of HPC machine in action. Note that bump keys don't always (or sometimes never) work. I always prefer an nice informative, edited video as opposed to a fumbling, rambling, lengthy "live" video.
Thank you for sharing. That key did work band the tip was not cut down. Boredlockpicker (I believe) mentioned once he never cuts his down but I have always had better luck doing that
@@HelpfulLockPicker OK -- never made a KW1 bump key -- just used my KW1 deepest depth & space key that someone else made -- guess I'll cut one next time I'm cutting KW1 keys and see for myself -- Besides you can't bump "smart key", so use my Lock Tech decoder for that.
I have a bunch of Master Lock #3 I got off e-bay. No keys. I got a LIshi and decoded them. But Locksmiths want around $15 to make a key from direct code. WTF? And if you go to hardware store, they only cut key from another key. Is there a video on how to hand file a key from direct code--where to get depth of cut, etc? I can use a regular Master Lock key to get spacing. Thank you.
You would want to look up the chart for the root depths. You can get Master Lock code cut keys on eBay for $4.99. Depending on how serious you are the Silca Flash duplicator I have is $500 new and you can get space and depth keys and do it at home (you can get used machines even cheaper )
You can find them online. If you really would like a set feel free to email me. They are not hard to make and most places should be able to do a good job
Could you use a bump key on a SL03 Cal-Royal Classroom Lever Lock Grade 2 ??? and I'm not using this for a classroom it's for a basketball gym near my home in a park , me and my friends want to ball up indoors during this covid pandemic cause all gyms are closed and this is our only option cause cops have took down all basketball hoops near us 🤣😂
I don't have a key cutting machine so I would need to create them by hand. How many thousands of an inch high does each tooth need to measure? I can measure the spacing between the tumblers. I've already spent hours trying to unlock a Kwikset clone so I can re-key it.
@HelpfulLockPicker Oh my hell, I'm getting so frustrated with these videos doing this. How am I supposed to know the correct way of filing (copying the master key) if I've lost it or it's inside the room that's locked?? I thought that was the whole point, to make the bump key when you have with lost it or locked it inside!!! You're telling me that I should have Made a bump key BEFORE getting locked out? PLEASE HELP
I tried 20 times and couldn't get my KW1 with my bump keys I bought. Something I'm missing. You didn't do much explaining. could watch 1 hr vids on this. In other words it was ironically not helpful.

thank you for the kind words :-) it is a lot of fun to do and hand can be quite effective in the right circumstances

I didn't show the key to this lock but it certainly wasn't bad bitting. I will send you a photo

When it was pinned up to 6 it was: 1-4-1-5-7-2 and when it was pinned up to 5 it was: 1-4-1-5-7
@@HelpfulLockPicker Thanks for letting me know. That's a pretty good bitting and you "bumped" it with ease.
Great video! But what about kw1?
Some people use rings do you need to file down the end?
What about the chart you used to get key specs? Where do you get those, of did they come with machine?
My code cards came with the machine however the root depths charts are easy enough to search for on the internet.

Great video! Don't think I'll be trying to make them on my own but it was very informative about bump keys and key bitting. Thanks, HLP!

Another vid with great production values. Good info and a really professional presentation.

How would you go about making a cutout to add an O ring like some commercially sold bump keys have?
You would need to cut back the bow

I find it funny as soon as they made that for the smart key Kwikset decided to make a Schlage smart key
It would be nice if you make an addition to this video on how to make a bump key with a rubber o-ring bumper?
I do have a video on the bumper but I am not sure if I covered that. I could try to make one down the road.
I really appreciate hope simple and thorough you make these. Great job🤘🏆
Thank you for the kind words :)
So where can I purchase the HPC key cutter??? Hand filing takes to long, it’s never 100 percent as well
CLK supplies sells code cutters
Thanks- what’s your take on Octokeys???
How deeply on a Master key blank would I need to file to make such a "bump" key?
Thank you!
Master small pin depth #6 .120 or master large pin depth #7 .170
Thanks, but how would I know whether I'd need the small pin or large pin depths???@@kcet1948
5 cut all number 9 folks ❤

Glad you liked it!
Good job

Will a key with these measurements open most house locks?
Unfortunately in the United States most locks can be bumped without much difficulty.

I would not recommend bumping a lock in use
Man ì really love your key cutter, you'd laugh at mine it's a Mini-Mite 800 from the 80s. What does a machine like yours cost ?
$2100 but they were on sale for $1,800 when I got mine

Look up the root cuts to the key in question and do the deepest cut
I think it's missing a third camera angle but other than that its a great video!
I thought the intro made up for it?

Some locks are harder to bump than others. Hopefully your lock doesn't have a #7 pin because sometimes the KW1 keys come cut 66666
