    No Iron Maiden on List, I am shock and I am glad you mentioned Thin Lizzy and my Mom play piano and read music and she blew me away on when she play classical, she encouraged me to play Guitar and start it in 1983 when I was 17 years old, Thanks to Guitar Practicing Musician, Guitar Tab Magazine and Guitar Player and Guitar world and my mom got me Ibanez strat in 1983 and Peavey Amp and it was hard starting off , then got my First Used Tobacco 1982 Gibson Les Paul in 1985, that when I start it practicing more and buying Cassettes and Guitar Books Methods and I finally got the feel of Guitar and then start paying for my own Lessons in 1987 and my teacher didn't Like Kiss that much and He did teach me Lot of Kiss and I had Learn lot of ACDC and Black Sabbath and my Teacher made me listen Sabbath and ACDC and The Rolling Stones and Beatles and The Who, For Rhythm Guitar and then I came to real appreciate all the Songs I Learn, he was good teacher and then I really branch out taken Lessons from different Teachers and I found teacher who love kiss 70s, 80s and Bad Company to. By the way you are excellent Teacher and I love your Channel and I feel bad for you that family was not into Music, Thank got for my Mom and she Always asking me who hot Guitarist right now, she love Kiss, Quiet Riot and Scorpions , Deep Puple and Rainbow and Aerosmith and my Mom Put on Music on Saturday and Sunday she always kept up on MTV and Concerts to.

      Hi, @guitarist22lespaul90 Interesting read, you where very lucky having such a cool Mum. The reason no Iron Maiden is simply the fact the list is based on albums I heard when I was younger, Maiden wasn't around then. I did listen to Kiss especially the Live album but they wasn't a huge influence to me at that time. If I was to do a series of video like this then other bands you mention would certainly appear in lists. Guitar World was my favorite magazine at that time. That always seemed a cut above the rest and I learned a lot from that.

    The Old Grey Whistle Test gave us some fine videos to be seen in the UA-cam age. Especially earlyJudas Priest.

      It was a great program, and the fact they had to play live. Some memorable performances. Was a great way to start a week.

    Aerosmith - Live Bootleg - Train Kept a Rolling - just love that riff!
    British Steel - Breaking the Law - KK & his flying V inspired me like no other!
    Stones - Satisfaction - Another great lick that inspired me to play
    UFO - Strangers in the NIght - such a great guitar album and another Flying V
    Van Halen 1 - say no more

    I'm just a bit younger than you, so my list starts with:
    Alive II by KISS - the solos in Makin' Love and Rocket Ride, and especially the big solo in Shock Me got me hooked.
    Grand Illusion by Styx
    Some Enchanted Evening by Blue Öyster Cult
    One More from the Road by Lynyrd Skynyrd
    British Steel by Judas Priest
    Double Live Gonzo by Ted Nugent
    These are listed in the order I remember discovering them... up until I was 12 in 1978, I was an American Top 40 kind of music fan. Then I got my first KISS record, and everything changed.
    By 1980, I was listening to "imported" records you couldn't find at the department store, like the first Iron Maiden record or the Heavy Metal Heroes NWOBHM compilation record.

      Hi Paul, great to hear from you. Thanks for sharing your top 5 albums One More From The Road, would have been an entry if i was doing my top 10. British Steel was a later entry for me as I was only listening to Led Zeppelin for quite some time. The NWOBHM only took of for me after the Punk era in the late 70's.

    I knew you were going to have Thin Lizzy in there (maybe even an iron Maiden, going by your tutorials obviously)....but you get me with Presence, I didn't see that coming....no wrong answer with Led Zep though!

    • @GuitarMates
      @GuitarMates  5 місяців тому

      @CarrigansGuitarClub good to hear from you. The simple reason for no Maiden is that they weren't around in my early day. I had already been playing and gigging for a few years before they came to my attention. Again with Presence that was the first album I heard by them. If it was based on that criteria then the list would be slightly different but not a lot! Thanks for you comments and good to hear from you.

    One Of These Nights and Live and Dangerous would be in my list as well, then maybe;
    Led Zeppelin II
    Wishbone 4
    Anything by Rory Gallagher
    🎸

      Hi John, I would probably say Led Zeppelin II is my second favorite album by them. I like the raw feel of this album. Babe I'm Gonna Leave You was the first song that I learnt using finger style playing. I have never really got into Wishbone Ash, to honest I don't know why either. I should listen to more of the music. Of course Rory but I didn't start listening to him till later in my life. It does appear that Live & Dangerous is on most peoples list.

      @@GuitarMates Hi Geoff, I’ve always had a thing for What Is And What Should Never Be, think it’s the mixture of soft and heavy. As for Wishbone Ash I’d say Argus is probably more of a guitar album than 4, but 4 has some really melodic guitar work on, (try Everybody Needs A Friend). Obviously Wishbone Ash were one of the earliest twin guitar bands like Thin Lizzy but not as heavy. With Rory Gallagher, if you had the privilege of seeing him live you knew you were in for a brilliant night of superb blues rock played flat out and nothing left on the stage. Keep up the good work.

    you were a softie.....NOW you can't get ANY better than Live and Dangerous....BUT Gary Moore wasn't one of the guitarists on that album...I WAS THERE at the show in Philly....it was at the Tower Theatre in Upper Darby PA....one of MY BEST top 3 shows......guitarists were Brian Robertson and ScotT Gorham

      Hi IsMike when I mentioned Gary Moore I wasn't specifically talking about the album. I was referring to the times he has played the song. I don't know about being a softie but I believe that a song should sound ok. It should be able to pas The Old Grey Whistle Test!

      @@isMike999 Please remember Mike that Gary spent quite some time playing with Thin Lizzy. He would always fill in when Brian was absent for whatever reason. I have always seen Gary as part of the band on numerous occasions when I saw they on live shows Gary was on stage with them. The Old Grey Whistle Test was a UK TV show that promoted progressive music in the 70', and 80's. What was so good was the fact they played live and it didn't matter if they wasn't in the UK charts. The host (Whispering) Bob Harris just had to like the band. Here is a link to an excerpt from Thin Lizzy. BTW check out the guitarist ua-cam.com/video/FJm_abdapvo/v-deo.html

      This is what they mean by The Old Whistle Whistle Test. That was then used as the name for the TV show. When music moguls got the first cut of a record, they would play it to the doormen in grey suits, known colloquially as the old greys. Any song they could recall and whistle, after having heard it a couple of times, was deemed to have passed the old grey whistle test and was destined to become a popular hit.

      Hi Mike, I have no issues at all with this discussion at all. I do feel that we have slightly gone of at a tangent. My reason for including the album was really down to the feel of a band playing live and the ability to alter and change arrangements and solos when playing live. I had never heard that before. I my early years i had seldom heard a band live or listened to many live albums so it was more like a education for me. Which as I said, was an inspiration for me to work on my own improvisation skills. Unfortunately in terms of this discussion, outside of the live record, most of the video I had seen of TL had Gary on guitar. Brian and Scott will always be Thin Lizzy. It's there ability to improvise that I felt was one of their many great assist. I wish I had been as lucky as you to have seen them live.
