2021 Moonman Q1 Fountain Pen Unboxing and Review
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 сер 2024
- This quirky little Moonman Q1 is on loan for review from my pen-friend Janice Butterworth. I unbox it, talk about the parts and features of the pen, provide some size comparisons and measurements, and then do a writing sample. After the writing sample, I talk about what I like and what I don't like about the pen. Please feel free to use the chapters provided below to skip to various parts of the review.

I own two of these and love them. Great writers at an amazing price. I use it more often than my MB 149...
I love this pen. The quality of machining and overall look is better than pens I've paid significantly more for, and I love how long it keeps without having to be reinked. I don't find it uncomfortable to write unposted, and that's the only way I write with it.
I bought it because it looked stupid, but it quickly became one of my favorite pens. However, the nib was so bad it didn't even write when I first got it.
I love how it looks like a little potion bottle fused with a pen. Especially if you put red ink in it
Oh my goodness, Doug!!!! You had me in stitches!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Your review of this pen was the one I waited for because I knew it’d be “cheeky”!!! I enjoyed the other reviews of this pen however, you will be totally honest and real about this pen. The ink is beautiful and with a broad nib would’ve been stunning with no flow issues. Thank you so much for the review.
Glad you enjoyed it, Marianne! How can you take this pen seriously? LOL
Great review, Doug. And now the company formerly known as Moonman will forever be Moonblanc to me.
I can't claim ownership of "Moonblanc" as that was a viewer's comment. LOL
That clip from Police Squad had me laughing for hours when I was a kid.
I STILL laugh out loud each time I see it!
It can be used as portable ink vial with nib
This and Energizer smartphone+powerbank has same energy
it is just super cute. I use burgundy color ink in mine, and it reminds me of a glass of wine. I guess the charm is in the way it displays the ink.
Have to agree with you on the pen; no idea why it is popular. The slo-mo fill however, was as beautiful as it was campy...in a good way. Thank you sir.
Thank you, miguel!
One important feature: the top is a loupe precisely focused on the tines so it makes it easier to tune the nib (also, clip is removable if you like going commando).
Also, if you want to review a really naughty toy, check out the Platinum glamour. The Q1 has nothing on it.
It is ribbed for her pleasure. LOL
I would advise not to remove the clip.
You need a place to tie a string incase you loose it in the nether regions.
Have a wonderful day.
@@garywood60 LMAO!
@@InkquiringMinds I just picked up a glamour because I liked the weird wide nib. It’s a lot more of a pocket pen and I think is a bit more usable. I found one in a nice robin egg blue.
Doug, you forgot about the magnifying lens on the cap to check the alignment of the nib. :) Mine was bought with a (J-H) Fude nib. I used Diamine Gold Star but it clogged the feed, so I did the unthinkable (and risky, not risque): drained out the ink without flushing and immediately refilled with Kon-Peki blue. Now the pen has a glittering teal ink with decent flow and slight gold sheen.
Yeah I didn't forget. It was one of the first things I looked at and it doesn't work well at all. I thought it might have been an "undocumented feature".
@@InkquiringMinds It isn't very practical, but it is very well crafted, polished, and put together artifact to behold, if not write with. Probably the least practical pen I own besides the two that look like cigarettes, which are the opposite end of the impractical spectrum.
Hi Doug! Jim from Madrid, Spain (a New Yorker expat living abroad).
You just crack me up!
😅😅😅😅
I get your insecurities with its shape!
😅😅😁😎👍🤙
I agree that it might not be a GREAT pen for writing and for everybody... but I believe that it's a real good pen for Artists (drawing, sketching...) because when used "unposted" you can use it as with charcoal sticks and it helps a lot when drawing!
I don't own one yet but I've seen it used by many artists and it's great for drawing. I'm actually saving up a bit to buy one (my budget for Art and my budget for Fountain Pens have been increasing a bit too much lately and my wife is starting to give me the "stare or death" every time I order something new! (Gasp!)
😓😓
Cheers from Sunny Spain!
😁👍😎
Cool! Good to know!
Put aFide nib on it, hold it (uncapped) like a stick of pastel and draw with it… it is fantastic at that!
Doug, you kill me! I enjoy your reviews, and love your humor and video clips! I agree with your assessment of the pen. It doesn’t do anything for me. I’ll stick with my Pelikan M800 and Pilot E95s. Thanks for all of it!
(By the way, I got a kick out of the t-shirt.)
LOL Glad you enjoyed it, Dot!
Your music during filling reminded me of the beginning of the song "I don't like Mondays". Nice review.
Thanks Tom. It was a UA-cam music freebie! :)
@@InkquiringMinds Just the beginning reminded me of the Boomtown Rats then it drifted away. Nice.
@@tomshult3044 Cool thanks!
It is actually the first chords from The Moody Blue "Voices in the Sky"
great video, im am thoroughly entertained
I'm glad
Wonderfully enlightening video. True in many ways.
Thank you kindly!
Fun review!
Thank you, Wendy! It is an odd one! :)
If there is a flat top finial, it would stand on its head easily. Quite a chunky pen. Reminds me the tombow zoom egg pens. 😅
Considering Tombow stopped manufacturing their eggs, and they're great for people with arthritis et al, it's a very welcome clone.
@@WhenDoesTheVideoActuallyStart true. Platinum also manufactured a similar pen, but discontinued.
@@WhenDoesTheVideoActuallyStart Not to be a contrarian, but I've heard this for years (dating back to the Tombow Zoom), but always as, "it would be great for someone with arthritis". I don't think I've heard someone say, "I have arthritis, and yes, it's great." I can understand how a girthy section could help, but why make the pen comically short? Why not just a chonky M600, for example?
The Platinum is "ribbed for her pleasure".
Love the ink
It is a funny looking pen, I mean, fountain pens are always too serious, too formal, ou too mistical and shit like that. Moon man makes some FUN pens...I'm waiting mine to arive, and can't wait to write with it!
Thanks Dug did the review - like yiu, I wasn't sure what the fuss was about with the Q1, now I know I don't need to buy it to find out!
Glad to help! If they were a buck a piece, I could give them away at Hallowe'en!
I'm glad I watched, so I can see the writing with the Pelican Golden Beryl Ink and now want a Laban Skeleton, what an interesting design!!!!
Skeleton should be here next week! Look for the review on Hallowe'en!
I am so glad you are back to doing reviews! You should have a shirt that states how many continents we had when we grew up. 7, now they say there is only 5. My god you are bringing back being a kid in the 70s. They could be older commercials. Silly Putty got boring after lifting a few comic in the Sunday paper,
Silly putty got positively BLACK after lifting a lot of comics! LOL
You got that movie star smile.
Wow! I'm a star! :) Thank you, Nikola!
I really want this t-shirt!
I got it on Amazon!
You know when you set the pen down at the very end of the review? Well I thought for certain it was gonna vibrate! Great ink though. I must say I was really looking forward to YOU reviewing this pen. I knew it would be a laugh-a-thon! Thanks Doug!!!
Thanks for watching! I'm afraid I edited one joke out... I told Janice she could pick it up now ... it is fully charged. LOL
@@InkquiringMinds ROFL!
Well Mr twistin’ pistons, you shoulda left that joke it! (What? Jeff started the haha here). Thanks I needed a good Sunday laugh!
My guess to this pen's popularity is just how odd it looks, there really aren't many pens that remotely look like it, aside from the Tombow which it cleary took "inspiration" from.
Something you mentioned was why some F.P. things are so popular, I had the same thought but for me it has to do with Pelikan's line of higher end pens like the M400, 600, 800, and 1000. The thing that confuses me is when choosing between a m400 through 1000, the price is increased just for a few cm's and grams, unless you get the 800 or 1000 then you'll get some metal hardware & an 18k nib but even so it's just some extra reinforcement to the pen (which I'm not sure why it isn't added to the 400 or 600 models) and a slighty softer nib.
I already saw Pelikan pens to be a bit overrated but the jump in price for each ascending model always confused the hell out of me.
Bang on IC! I am thrilled with my Pelikan M800 and started looking for an M1000 - omg not at that price. So how about an M600... but so much smaller. Okay, another M800... but there are like three choices! Seriously?
Alternate title: The Pen With the Golden Beryl
Strongly recommend that you try a Q1 demonstrator with a Fude nib.
Janice has asked me to give it away!
It reminds me a little of the Stipulo Passaporta, but chunkier?
That slo-mo though ❤️
It was too gorgeous not to do a "glam shot".
I have large hands but this pen is even too big for me to write with it for very long but I like it for quick notes and I never lose it on my desk. Thanks for using the Golden Beryl as I wondered how it would show up in the writing. By the way my nib lays down a wider line and I’m a strange one I guess because I like my Moonman nibs except for the S1
Thanks for sharing! The S1 is a bit thin for my hand. Moonman nibs tend to be all over the place IMO.
I knew I would fill mine with Diamine Shimmering Sands, which looks the same as the ink Doug choose. It looks spectacular and swirly.
Fill it with candy! Pop rocks, nerds, chiclets. Gives you something to chew on while you try to remember why you bought it. Limited edition flavors to add $5 to the price. The ink is gorgeous though.
It reminds me of a Tenga egg, and I suggest you look it up bc I'm embarrassed explaining what it is, but i do warn you it is pg18.
The moonman q1 looks like it'd be great with my hand cramping problems, but it looks too small and it'll still bother me while I hold it. I think someone said it reminded them of a pickle.
Right now I'm waiting for my first moonman though I cant remember which. But man, moonman are really good at making crystal clear pens.
OMG! Shame on you... /me searches Amazon Prime...
@@InkquiringMinds if you buy a pack please, I dont want to know.
@@scarletcloack4853 Bang goes that UA-cam review idea!
@@InkquiringMinds there are already plenty of Tenga product reviews. I myself want to get the chocolate pack, but I dont live in japan /sigh
@@scarletcloack4853 OMG Chocolate!?
The Moonman Q1 is stubby and fun. Its nib is rigid, not "flexy." There is no dispute. It is rather cute and some will find it quite sexy!
There's an audience for everything! My channel is proof! LOL
Inkquiringmimds I was wondering if you could tell me about your Moonman M 800. It looks that it is more along the lines of an amber red colors with swirls. I Purchased one about a month ago and it is a bright orange color with black swirls. I feel as though I got ripped off. I even wonder if they gave me the right pen in general at all. Even though they only offered the one I purchased and one that was blue, no orange whatsoever. So I was hoping you would let me know if it is truly more on the red side of the spectrum color as it looks in the video or not. Thank you so much in advance. The company doesn’t seem to care that I am unhappy with the bright orange pen I received that should be, like I said before, more towards the Reds and Amber hughes of the color spectrum. Thank you again.
I suggest you take a look at my review of the Moonman M800 amber to see if it is much different. ua-cam.com/video/cqM1xPhB1Wk/v-deo.html
Can you swap out the nib unit for a standard JoWo #6?
YES!
Now I kinda want one!
LOL! I've failed!
Like the pen. Looked at ‘em a few weeks ago but prices jacked up so skipped it. Thought it might be good for days my hands are sore but would need a nib replacement for glide across the page! I love love love that ink! I do like the golden brown inks so would be nice addition. Forget the doorstops but this chunky pen has possibilities. It would fit in a small purse where regular lengths of pens I like don’t quite work. Most porket pens carry so little ink .. .and if I put a kaweco in my pocket I’m likely to lose the little bugger. But this big egg in a little purse could become a weapon if you needed to swing it around at some one or easier than finding/using your little pepper spray . . . Just unscrew it & douse your attacker! Might be good to add a few drops of the glowing kind of ink.
New products in self defense! LOL
Thats a nice ink
I got a Q1 when they were still relatively new. I've always been a tad upset with mine because the cap will not stay posted. The LEAST little bit of sideways pressure against the web of my thumb on the cap and it just "pops" off. I did get it as more of a novelty, as I tend to like slim pens, in the 8-10 mm girth range for the section, and as I suspected, it's definitely "fat" in my hand. So much so that I don't really care to write much with it.
But I'm still considering getting a second one to see if the posting problem I'm having with it is a one-off and if I can switch the caps and end up with two (sort-of) usable pens.
I have one of those ornate doorstops by the way. It's a 99-gram Jinhao Dragon pen. It's kind of like this Q1. "It's not for eatin', it's just for lookin' through."
That's the ticket! The first one pisses you off, so get another one! What could go wrong? LOL
@@InkquiringMinds Fool me once...
Although I wouldn't mind one for each of my shimmering inks...just to show them off.
Looking forward to Q2 - which is Q1 after a Keto diet with a better BMI and a more proportionate Aspect Ratio !
There’re reports which indicate that many shy/reserved people use Q1 since it’s a perfect ‘Conversation starter’.. Many executives who don’t have much progress to report in Status
/Progress meetings flash Q1 when their turn comes since it acts as a perfect ‘attention divertor’ 😉
LMAO! I'll recommend Janice feed this one steak and no bread!
Is it going to be longer, or thicker. If this is the puckke pen, could Q2 be a cucumber one?
@@martinlebl631 Kaweco Lilliput like Aspect ratio will do !
The Sexiest thing about this pen is...The box!! Sorry Doug holding this pen for me felt like writing with a hotdog. Its large awkward not really a serious thing you want to pull out in front of anyone. Lol! If you didn't know I was talking about the pen it would sound X rated!!🤣😂😉
"Excuse me while I whip this out!" LMAO
Oh! Thanks for the Ray Harryhausen fix, Doug! A fairly inexpensive novelty item, but I'll pass. Is that ink mostly shimmer, or glitter
on paper, or do my eyes deceive? Cheers!
It is VERY glittery, David. You can see how my "Thank you for watching" started to clog up. The fine nib isn't the best for this kind of ink. My Italix broad cursive italic is perfect.
Can you put a converter inside that pen?
Nope!
R2D2 with a clip! As always, great review! Oh yeah, Go Yankees ... I wish! "One and done"!
Cheer up! Now it is time to watch our hockey teams lose too!
@@InkquiringMinds Well, there's always my Dolphins ... more "agita"!
Hey there Doug, did you hear about the new "Engraved 14k Nibs" coming from PENBBS soon?
I'm sweating with anticipation over here...omg.
I announced those engraved 14k nibs months ago when Long posted them on his IG account. Alan and I were going to do another joint review. But, sadly, they are only available in China at the moment. It might be a while before they are available to the west. Current pricing indicates they might be over $200 each.
@@InkquiringMinds Oh yikes!! There goes that option...lol. There's no way I'm paying that much for engraving. If it's flex...maybe yeah. But a normal nib...nah, I'll let the hype train roll past.
LOL I was in stitches laughing
LOL! :)
@@InkquiringMinds And I'm a glutton for punishment: I ordered one.
I don't like this pens... sure, they kinda look funny but don't really catch my attention. I think people like them for similar reasons they like the Platinum Preppy: quirky/cute, transparent, affordable and came in colors too. Of course, they really look like a quality product, just like some other Moonman pens like the M2 or the M800. But, still... I don't like them enough to buy one, and I started to get bored of how many videos this Q1 pens already had. But that's okay, because now I'm pretty interested in that Laban Skeleton 🧐.
Thank you for the video Doug.
They just shipped the Laban today! :)
@@InkquiringMinds 🙌 Wohoo!
Moonman is the same than Mojian and Majohn?
Yes. They had to change their name because Kaweco arbitrarily trademarked "Moonman" to keep them from selling in the Eu.
Thanks again Doug for declaring our hidden imagination......I guess is actually what we see feel n taught off🤠😁⭐👿
🤩🌏🌍🌎👍
Professor Doug, perhaps I could suggest Hedley Lammar. or as the governor says "work, work, work, hello boys". But I digress, it is a beautifully crafted pen, the clarity of the acrylic is fantastic with the chosen ink. You never fail to entertain and I too remember when my solar system had 9 planets. May I suggest, "The Pluto Files, The Rise and Fall of America's Favorite Planet" by Neil DeGrasse Tyson
Yes! I know of this book!
Must be some pretty nice ink if it motivated a new pen purchase!
I think so!
It writes great, flows nice and smooth.
I'm surprised didn't try a AA batterie on it !!! LOL. Conversation piece would be the best use for the Q1, I would say.
LOL I was trying to control myself. I even edited some more questionable jokes.
@@InkquiringMinds Oh, for shame. :) Is there an outakes clip coming one of these days...
Not sure tha woukd fit, but AAA might. Not enough power in that though...
I would like to see it next to a Moonman Wancai. I am not crazy about that ink... it appears too yellow, at least on screen.
I don't have a Wancai, but they are much more usable than this little fellow. The ink is glittery gold. There's no mistaking it for yellow.
@@InkquiringMinds Maybe too much gold for these old eyes to be able to read comfortably :) I could tell that there was a lot of gold in the bottle, I thought with the darker ink it would not be SO gold on the paper ;) Maybe it is easier to read in person?
@@caburg93 Very much so. It glitters from almost every angle. The direct overhead camera with the overhead lights makes it come out pale.
It looks that you should try this ink with another pen that you do like. By the way, I respect your decison to not answer the comments of the people that don't join. In fact, I don't care.
Well said! :)
I am impressed with your artistic use of the meniscus in filling the pen!
Well that golden ink needs some artistic treatment! LOL
Good review Doug but not good enough to make me ever buy one.I would be embarrassed bringing that out of my pocket lol.
I'd be embarrassed with it IN my pocket!
I think this pen is a knock off of japanese Jumbo Pens, a kind of joke pens pre-WWII and after and the quality of those pens use to be as cheap as its price. IMO it's a joke pen, use to be a joke pen and still it is. Same goes for the Montblanc Boheme, with that contraptions to replace the ink cartridges (ink cartridges!!! in a Montblanc!!!! holly molly!!). Gourgeous ink though. Thank you Doug for another excelent review.
Yeah I've seen photos of those incredible, bloated pens from Japan. Some kind of Godzilla thing?
@@InkquiringMinds Maybe for medicating Godzilla?
@@paulherman5822 LOL! Bend over and say CHEESE!
@@InkquiringMinds If it was a Ranga, it would be just as thick, but three times as long...those are pretty impractical too. Or whole ebonite rod, with nib on both ends.
As the foremost Moonblanc expert, you should check out the TOMBOW ZOOM Egg Fountain Pen (The Fat Boy) from the late 80s...
I've seen photos! I'm sure this is what Moonblanc was copying.
Yes!!!!! The Tombow Zoom, its on myist of grail pens. Tombow made one finished in what they called a "speckled egg" which was an eye catcher. Thanks for noticing the comparison.
"Don't take it out in public, or they'll put you in the dock, and you won't. Come. Back..."
Looks like a medical device we used to use for cattle...
The type, at least the original type, was touted as being for arthritic hands. I have a soft spot for pocket pens, and have several. From a few vintage (I really like my Good Service ringtop with a Weidlich nib, though I recently got a Good Service nib which I may put in it, to make it not a frankenpen,) even one that is the same size as a standard international short ink cartridge, uncapped, that's BARELY useable, so I can see maybe getting one, at some point. Not sure if or when, yet. I have others in my queue ahead of it. Thanks for the laughs!
Thanks, Paul. If my hands end up making me not able to write, I'll get one. Currently, trigger finger in my left hand is keeping me from playing guitar. I wonder if they make a guitar shaped like the Q1?
@@InkquiringMinds If my luthier buddy was still alive, he could have done it. Maybe talk with Steve at Aaron's Music Service in Vicksburg, Michigan. He's the current owner of the company my buddy worked for.
Hand built guitars, generally on the 1930s and 1940s Gibson designs, but I think he'd like the challenge.
I got help with my trigger finger after seeing my orthopedist and a shot of cortisone as a treatment. Hope that helps.
I think someone's kid slipped in a clipart drawing in their parent's design drawings. 🤣✒
LOL!
21:29 Moon Blanc?! lol
LOL
Size isn't everything, Doug! It's what you do with it...
I've heard that!
I love my C1 and the original nib that it came with so I'm hoping the Q1 will live up to that for me.
The novelty aspect was certainly a contributing factor, that said it's a well made clear acrylic eyedropper with a number 6 nib. So it simply checked so many boxes I couldn't resist.
Perhaps the girth of the pen is too much to comfortably satisfy & vibe with, but it holds nearly an ocean of ink and the truth of it will be in the motion.
The C1 takes around 4ml of ink! Great pen.
The Q1 feels really well crafted in hand. Very nicely polished demonstrator. But really more about the demonstrating than writing. However, no complaints about the craftsmanship.
Oh you old traditionalist, you… You just can’t get with the cool kids 😂
Nah Ahh! Them’s fightin’ words! Janice has donated this cool pen for me to give away! How cool is that?
What this pen is most suited for is generating UA-cam reviews.
Anything odd or unusual gets the YT treatment!
@@InkquiringMinds Also makes great fidget toy, to see the ink swirling. I reach for it a few times a day. I usually reach for the WS 699 to write, but this one gets picked up nearly as often. :)
I got nothing....
Speechless huh? :)

Does this pen burp ?
It will when it isn't completely full and there are temperature or air pressure changes - like all eye dropper fountain pens.
@@InkquiringMinds Thanks for your reply. I recently saw one more Moonman pen called the S7 clear eye dropper, which practically looked like a slimmer and longer version of q1 and seemed more convenient to use!
this is a wierd pen I will not be buying one ..I bought a curidas knock off and that was a mistake 6 dollars though not so bad compared to the 80 or so for the real thing ;/ Great video thanks Doug :) take care.
Sorry to hear that. I looked at those things too but Doodlebud's review of the shoddy manufacturing kept me away.
@@InkquiringMinds it's not so much the manufacturing it's the feel in the hand it's a chongus compared to the simplicity of the vanishing point
I don’t get it; I’m not going to get it; I don’t want it. But I am going to shake my booty.
Shake that money maker!
You almost expect to see a straight blade or Phillips head on the thing when you take the cap off. This thing is a FREAK. It bothers me. I can't stand the competition. And I have a few of those Dragon pens, I like them and write with them. This is just too weird even for me.
Doesn't it feel like holding a pine cone?
I don't know what makes me look the other way every time I come across this pen. Is it too short? Is it too fat? The fact is that, after watching your video (and my previous experience with pocket pens), all my prejudices were confirmed. I simply don't like this pen.
It is an odd one.
