Handy is maybe my favorite Wishbone Ash song and a song I like because of the bass. This is one of the songs that brought me to playing bass, and music in general. An important part of my life since 45 years. These lines I try to play them since years, always fun. Thanks for sharing your reactions here. Phoenix is a classic WA tune, they played it almost on every concert.
The bass is sublime on here, of course. It’s the part midway through Sometime World that always sticks with me because, well, that was the moment that I heard bass as a melodic instrument properly for the first time many many years ago. I still don’t know why I never investigated their other albums! 🤷♂️ putting that right now 👍🏼
@@JimNewstead Well Argus remains their best album and I LOVE Sometimes World for the same bass reason !. But they have other great albums. I recommend Wishbone Four and for a little bit later albums, Locked In and New England (with Laurie Wisefield on guitar replacing Ted Turner)
@@Rowenband Locked In is terrible! Easily the worst thing that the Mk2 lineup ever did. It was produced by Tom Dowd in Miami and he was clearly trying to make them sound American, which is completely against the essence of who and what they were. The album before Locked In - There's The Rub (the first with Laurie Wisefield on) - is, however, utterly wonderful.
@@stevebenson5336 Well, we clearly don't feel the same. Although I'm not a fan of US sound in prog-rock bands, I prefer Locked In to There's The Rub. The composition are, for me, more interesting. And New England is even better to my ears, with Lorelei and Mother of Pearl, for example…
@@Rowenband Each to their own, I guess. It would be boring if we all liked all the same things.
But I think you are very much in a small minority of WA fans in your opinion of Locked In. The band themselves disliked it and still regard it as the low point of their recorded output. The poor quality of the songs, the unsympathetic production and the often terrible vocals combine to make it, to most people's ears, a real clunker. Even the album cover is shockingly bad, featuring a terrible painting of the four band members.
I can still remember buying it when it first came out and, after the promising start of Rest In Piece, thinking, 'what the hell is this? Knowing that albums sometimes take a few listens to grow on you, I persevered. But it never got any better and I stopped playing it. I recently played it again, after several decades, to see if it had grown any better with age. It hadn't.
I quite like New England. I'd put it up there with Wishbone 4 as a middle ranking WA album - some good stuff, especially Outward Bound, Runaway and Lorelei. But it's a game of two halves, with most of the good stuff om side one. It really fizzles out on the second side, after Outward Bound. Whoever thought to schedule four ballads/quiet instrumentals in sequence at the end of the album was definitely having an off day.
To me, the quality of the material, the production and the playing put There's The Rub up there with the first three albums as the highlights of their career. Tracks like Persephone, Lady Jay and FUBB are absolute Wishbone Ash classics.
Handy reminds me of the old Fleetwood Mac with three excellent guitarist Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer, and Danny Kirwin.
Handy is one of my favorite songs of all time. The bass is really great but all of them really shine on this.
Ahhh, Phoenix. Been a long time since I heard it, many of my albums are in deep storage 6,000 miles away :(
In 1970 Andy Powell and Richie Blackmore met during a sound check when Wishbone opened for Deep Purple. That led to Blackmore suggesting them to producer Derek Lawrence. That December, they released their debut album.
Vas Dis on Pilgrimage (Their second album) is another favorite - has a nice jazz feel with the end of Handy after Upton's drum solo.
Whatever people feel about their other songs Phoenix is their magnus opus.
I would have to respectfully disagree.

Great record. Very cool record from the 2ng generation WA, and one of my favorites is There’s the Rub. Ted Turner left and Laurie Wisefeld took over. Rest of the band still intact.
Oh yes; "Phoenix". As I always say with YES classics: listen to it live on the Yessongs album, I say on Phoenix ... also listen to it live on the "Live-Dates" album.
Keep these classics rolling out Jim, fantastic band.

The amazing thing about this is that both Andy Powell and Ted Turner were both only 20 years of age and this is their first ever studio album. Martin Turner was a touch older at 23 and Steve Upton a "seasoned hand" at 25. Sublime.
The live versions of Lady Whiskey and Phoenix on side 4 of the 1973 Live Dates double album is IMHO the greatest (vinyl) side of live music ever recorded!

Totally agree ,regarding Lady Whiskey & Phoenix absolutely amazing musicianship.
The first song almost sounds like (this was once) an improvised piece/jam session; just start and we’ll see where we go and where we end. I quite like it because it’s not predictable until the last part. The drummer and base are great.
Phoenix. Slow, mellow with a faster louder second part, which could have been even a bit more aggressive; more distortion on the guitar I mean. Quite nice.
The b-side is much better than the first side.
Hei Jim! I've got a recommendation for you: Shamblemaths 2. A norwegian prog band. The album came out late 2021. It is amazing! I know you will enjoy it.

Not bad for a first outing. Steve Upton's drumming is ridiculously good and reminds me of Mitch Mitchell, another of my favorites. You've got to love the 'clean' natural guitar sounds and the way were captured thanks to Martin Birch. This was very heavy and high quality at the time it came out. Can you imagine jamming on stage with Ritchie Blackmore? No pressure there. Pilgrimage was to follow and another great album.
Bought this LP when it first came out. I was at school at the time and saw them live shortly afterwards. I have all the Wishbone albums and for me, this is the best!

One of the best concerts I ever experienced (back in the mid-70’s) basically because from the end of the first bar everyone abandoned their seats, piled to the front of stage and danced.

I saw them for Wishbone Four, There’s the Rub and Locked In. All great shows. I have been into them since age 14 around 1974.
The main band who got totally inspired by this was Lynyard skynyrd and it shows

You mention Hawkwind on Handy😳more like Allman Brothers and yes that drum sound does sound like Ian Paice.A bit of Grateful Dead DarkStar like noodling I in the quiet part.Phoenix is brilliant.Yes that riff Child in Time.Andy Powell and Blackmore had a jam at a sound check which led to him getting them a record deal hence the Martin Birch connection.How WA could release great stuff like this and then e few short years go AOR on albums like Locked In and Front Page News.
Phoenix is such an epic piece - I hope they did it when you saw them.

Hi Jim, hope your day is going well. I could be wrong, but I believe I recently read that Deep Purples Ritchie Blackmore was a fan of Wishbone Ash. I thought of that when you mentioned the part that sounded like Child In Time. Wishbone Ash will be In Pensacola Florida in April and I will drive down from Tennessee to see them again. Can't wait! Or maybe the show in Ohio. I haven't decided yet. I will definitely be at one of them.

@@JimNewstead Yes that one part of the song does sound like it.
Early on, Wishbone Ash was supporting Deep Purple ; Andy Powell and Ritchie Blackmore "dueled" together at the sound check and Ritchie became a fan. Wishbone Ash got their record and recording contract through Ritchie Blackmore's recommendation. The rest is history.

Jim - great album of course. May I suggest The Groundhogs - Thank Christ for the Bomb. In 1970, of all the great songs, John Peel said Soldier was his favourite song of the year. Another Blues inflected Rock album (but no 12 bar songs).

Judging by stack of lps behind you I guess you have all lps being suggested already! A delve into free lps and spirit stuff be cool. Free did a lot of great songs but we tend to always hear the hits being reviewed.
