Correspondent Larry Bowen talks with architectural historian Alan Hess and casino owner Steve Wynn about the city that never stops reinventing (and rebuilding) itself. I remember passing through Las Vegas at night in 1963. I was just 11 years old. Oh, the lights! I've been back many times over the years. Great place to have fun!

So happy that some of the signs now preserved at the Neon Museum.
This video is about 26 years old. Vegas has changed since, from themed casinos to modern stand alone architecture. Themed doesn't age well. Unless you visit the real thing. It's gone from neon bliss, to 10 story motion screens. From early days of being called, "motels, to "casinos", to now "hotel resorts." It's no longer an american adult playground, its now an international adult playground. With Asians dropping 32% of gambling revenue. A city of 200,000 population 1950's. To 2.3 million people today.
One thing *I* want to see from the archives is Ravi Shankar and his musical genius daughter Anoushka circa the early 1990s when Anoushka was in high school in Southern California. She is now carrying the legacy of her late beloved Papi around the world in everything she does onstage, in the recording studio, and everywhere else.
Richard Handal weird... I'd truly like to see that as well... I love Pt Shankar, and Anoushka is no slouch either!

Viva Las Vegas... I hope people aren't afraid to go there after last weekend... (10/01/17, for future reference.) We were perfectly happy being in the news for OJ getting out of prison, and then...
Anyway...
I'm glad that Carson City, Nevada (where I live) still has a few vintage "beautiful ⬅➡ ugly" ("Beaugly"? "Ugliful"?) casino signs intact, but they are probably doomed, if not already being dismantled as I write this. To my amazement, we've managed to keep a HUMONGOUS mile-wide American flag pasted onto the slope of our "C Hill" since 2002... but alas, the modern "bling" of Carson St is currently only a vaguely tacky glimmer of what it was even as recently as 20 years ago.
Eventually got to vegas in 1998 and was so disappointed to find the iconic sands dunes and golden nugget gone or unrecognisable . Americans seem to have no sense of history.

Modern las vegas is ugly and overpopulated. Those 60s and 70s themes with neon colors were way better.
