- Having grown up in Southern Nevada, I wrote a script for the history of Las Vegas. But today there is a guest speaker; Mark Hall-Patton. You may recognize him from Pawn Stars, but he is a prominent Las Vegas historian in his own right. He's modified the script to fit his style.

EPIC
Donaldson give me money
; All Hail, The Beard of Knowledge!
The greasy head of knowledge.
Patrolling the Mojave almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter.
Red Army Robin The Ceasar has marked you for death, and the Legion obeys. Prepare for battle!
(Just kidding. I hate the Legion.)
Yeeeessssss I was waiting for a comment like this lol
I could not say it any better.
Still my favorite game.
I need purified water, please!
Anyone else get disturbed by how Lake Mead seems to be shrinking on all of those time elapsed photos?
As a resident since 1971, I really enjoy hearing about the history of this amazing, crazy town I grew up in. It's fascinating to see pictures of the people whose names I've grown up with, such as Cashman, Gass, Lewis, Stewart, McCarran, Russell, and Clark. Thank you for the video!
I really like Mark Hall-Patton. Obviously familiar with him from "Pawn Stars" & always had a great deal of respect for him. Also like this 'site' & appreciate what you do. Kudos!
ya he was my favorite think about pawn stars. mostly because i love history. I really need to check out the Clark county museum next time i'm in town.
Ring a ding, baby
For some reason I am fascinated by the history of Nevada and Las Vegas, and this is such an informative video, one of the best I’ve seen. Thanks for sharing!
I lived in Vegas for 15 years and love the history of the town. Great Video
Great video thanks!
I grew up in Bullhead City, right in Mohave county, about 90 miles from Vegas so I drink this stuff up. Thanks man.
What a surprise. Your channel keeps on giving. For a cynic you give the world a lot back.
What are you trying to do, warm this cold cynical heart?
LOL, thanks
Damn! So many vids worth doing! Bring'em on!
As someone that lives in Las Vegas, its really cool to see the people our streets are named after.
This is exceptionally helpful. Thank you for this extra detailed history information.
From what Vegas native to another, you rocked it! Thanks for uploading!
*One not what
This is a fabulously interesting piece! Love it.
Mark really brought this piece to life, 10/10 great content.
Thanks For The History 😊
Your videos are wonderfully informative and fun to watch!! 😃❤️
Hey, Mark. Great talk. I'm a history buff who commuted to/lived in LV for a decade in naughts and teens and visited Clark County Museum often. Love your work. Delicious stuff. Keep it up, my friend.
I love Nevada, so I really enjoyed this video. Very well put together!
Wow! This was a wonderful video! I would love it if you revisited Las Vegas history as a topic later.
You should make more of these. I suggest Chicago but that's only because I live there.
Me too
I'm a transplant to Vegas from Chicago. I miss the food and good concert venues [I worked at the Riviera, Vic and Aragon for 15 years], but not the snow.
Great video. Concise but complete!
I found the video very interesting. Thanks for making it.
Dig this. Us Central Coastals (really?) must think similarly... (I just escaped from Santa Maria) History is a hobby or addiction depending on who you ask; I love your channel and the energy with which you defend her.
This video is amazing. Awesome narration. It's going to be hard to follow him.
Brilliant video
Thanks, from a Historian who prefers the real story too.
The beard of wisdom
great video!
Wow, cool..you must have interesting Thanksgivings. Thanks for sharing dude.
I've never been to Vegas but, like so many people, have seen the movies such as Bugsy, and had no clue to the rich history or politics which actually took place. This was a great video. The one person who gave it a thumbs down must be a troll.
Thanks for this. I am about two hours from Vegas. Interesting, we are going to hit some of the spots. Like the vid
Amazing video! Learning about my home town, go skyhawks, and were did you get that flying video shot from??????? Lolz
You know that feeling when you read something that sounds eerily similar to your own experiences, I'm feeling that right now.
Great vid!
What an extraordinary city, built in the most extraordinary country in the world.
Amazing video, subbed.
Interesting stuff!
I grew up in Vegas and knew a lot of this but not all, and you strung it all together nicely.
Lots of great photos and film footage.
I'm curious where you got the opening footage of the Rosenthall show from... there was a lot of local TV near the end of the mob era that I've never been able to find much info on.
+venusboys3 you can find the Frank Rosenthal show on UA-cam. It was extremely boring though
Born & raised in Vegas myself. One day I shall be free.
Great video.
Im from Las Vegas, never knew this stuff
The Beard of Knowledge
I'll be honest, I wanted to watch this video because of Fallout
Love this city. I lived there for 10 years and may return after retirement.
Mark Hall-Patton is the cynical historian with a glued on beard! No, but seriously, this was a great video, the amount of effort put into these exceeds most other history related content on UA-cam by a long shot. It's refreshing, and I am happy to give a little to make these possible. Also, you probably should tell your dad to turn his Facebook family information to private Joseph, because the entire I want to remove my person from my work thing doesn't really work if it takes one Google search and three clicks to get from one to the other.
I can only second the other commentors comments: It is a good video
My aunt was Peggy Pierce! Go Las Vegas!
My home city!
What was fantastic
Danm this make understanding fallout new Vegas lore a lot easy
That DAM project!!
You got the homie mark omg
0:39 Thought you grew a beard really fast there!
You forgot to mention that time they almost build a full size USS Enterprise at the end of the strip. That would've been insane.
The Aircraft Carrier Enterprise or the William Shatner Enterprise?
... but i have to question some of those illustrations - the one at 10.29 in particular, what port is that?
I believe that's in Hong Kong during the seaman's strike, but those USS crates make me question that. There's not a lot of HQ photos of 1922 strikes.
Definitely, not HK. Four clues: the 'British Bobby' style uniforms, the logo USS Co. WGTON on the trucks (suggest Union Steam Ship Company which would have a base in WGTON, which was the moniker for Wellington). The clincher would be the bell shape tops of buildings as they were common in Wellington, New Zealand. But please don't think I am being pedantic to criticize; this was excellent, nay exemplary, stuff.
Love las verdes heights
Of coarse someone would be named Cashman and work with casinos.
Vegas bois
Grew up in Vegas im in Vegas now
7:57: "Senetor [sic]"
LOL, only cool people spell it that way ;-) I watched through this dozens of times and had it checked by several others, yet that slipped through. Oh well
Very interesting presentation regardless. Thanks for the upload.
🤔🤯😍🥰😊
Sir
*Does a quick bit of online research*
HOLY FUCK THAT'S YOUR DAD?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!
The international hotel, don't you think that many high hotels look like it?
approved
The Cynical Historian, you should do the history of Miami, Florida in a future video!
Non-Americans who played fallout new Vegas.................... all these names sound familiar lol
The Cynical Historian, can you please do a video on the history of Oklahoma City?
Ave, unto Caesar.
Wait. So does that mean Sammy Davis Junior played to an all white audience?
Hey Cypher! I heard you say in another video that your hometown was San Louis Obispo, but here you say you grew up in Vegas. What is the explanation?
born in SLO, grew up in Vegas
So Mo Green and Al Pacino didn't build Las Vegas after all.
Vegas needs more rail.
Are you out of UNLV?
Got my BA there a decade ago
WHAT??? I thought it was Moe Green who invented Las Vegas!?
Alotta Colutta
So do you live in Paradise actually or North Las Vegas?
+Judy Apelsin i used to live in Henderson. Haven't for over three years though.
@@CynicalHistorian I am in Centennial Hills.

The "Gay Nineties" Bar ...
Hold up, Mark Hall-Patton? So he's indirectly related to you?
Indirectly?
Cypher, how big are your hands?
IDK. I'm a pianist that has a reach of 10 full steps, whatever that means. Why do you ask?
The perspective in the video, with your hands placed close to the camera, makes them look huge.
I was using a GoPro, so that distorts things a bit
That's your dad right?
I don't think Cypher is going to respond to that ;-)
Relkly
Moe Greene.
Fuggin Mormons!
Do many people in Las Vegas in brace the history as I have all ways seen it as not have such a vast history because it doesn't seem to be embraced
Most folks in Vegas, or really anywhere for that matter, only know or seemingly care about the glorified bits. Caring about history and not just the _cool stuff_ is an exceedingly rare trait
not her in northen Ireland were so good at killing each other they cant glorify the history
Don't leave out the rich & famous who film the terrorist propaganda
great video !!
