LYRICS:
Don’t wanna be in your club if you’d take me as a member
I’m not even slightly interested in whether I’m remembered I say
Ashes to ashes
Dust to dust
Gimme a tombstone if you feel you must
Sayin’ here lies a clown who wrote some songs
He talked too much and stayed too long
Back home in Perth I played piano down at Café Piazza
Swallowing second-hand smoke and singin’ standards by the masters
Learnt that every lyric’s sacred
That love’s everything
And that three drinks makes you straighten up and four get you swingin’
‘Til my crowd scared the suits away and I’d play my own songs
And then we’d talk too much and stay too long
Moved to Melbourne with my missus after locking her down
Felt like a very little fishy in a very big town
Barely scraping by on corporate gigs and quaint cabaret
Playing keyboards in a cover band until three in the AM
I was never really suited to them top forty songs
‘Cos I talked too much and played too long
Don’t wanna be in your club if you’d take me as a member
I’m not even slightly interested in whether I’m remembered I say
Ashes to ashes
Dust to dust
Gimme a tombstone if you feel you must
Sayin’ here lies a clown who wrote some songs
He talked too much and stayed too long
Took my eyeliner to Edinburgh in twenty-oh-five
Played to forty-five paying punters on that opening night
But to my surprise there was a rising demand
For a lovechild of Liberace and Edward Scissorhands
Dude from the paper said that diggin’ me was wrong
He said I talked too much and stayed too long
I’ve played the Albert Hall and Wembley I’ve played basements and bars
I’ve been to Hollywood and Broadway met those A-lister stars
I’ve shared cigarettes with Knights and shot tequila with Dames
Found I’m more interested in laughter than in hotness and fame
So long as you got irony honey we’ll get along
We can talk too much and stay way, way too long
Don’t wanna be in your club if you’d take me as a member
I’m not even slightly interested in whether I’m remembered I say
Ashes to ashes
Dust to dust
Gimme a tombstone if you feel you must
Sayin’ here lies a clown who wrote some songs
You know he talked too much and stayed too long
I been threatened with death and arrest and with hell
I went hard at a cardinal who was feeling unwell
I’ve had them dog-whistlin’ whiners send their dogs after me
I been a bigot and a faggot I been smug and ugly
I’m a long-haired lefty joker and a smoker of bongs
And I talk too much and stay too long.
But fuck that live fast and die young shit I plan on getting rickety
Baby I intend to stick around ‘til all you pricks is sick of me
And when they come to wash my old man balls and feed me mashed banana
They’ll find me in the common room playin’ blues on the piano
Same old three chords and cliched fuckin’ runs
And I’ll talk too much and stay too long
Don’t wanna be in your club if you’d take me as a member
I’m not even slightly interested in whether I’m remembered I say
Ashes to ashes
Dust to dust
Gimme a tombstone baby if you feel you must
Sayin’ here lies a clown who wrote some songs
Y’know he talked too much and stayed too long
Another white mother-fucker rambling on
He talked too much and stayed too long
#TimMinchin #TalkedTooMuchStayedTooLong #ApartTogetherAlbum
Well, he started to write in first person and he still feels rock-n-roll, so I suspect it's kinda working
best comment
@@kozinc with the same old three chords and clichéd fuckin runs
This comment is everything. Should be pinned!
@@austinholt8987 been a blues guitarist for dam near 50 years... he nailed it!
He'll never just be a rock-n-roll nerd
If his tombstone doesn’t read “Here lies a clown who wrote some songs”, I’ll go mental.
that's going on MY tombstone, assuming i have one... when my wife's soon to be ex called me a clown, I said, "thanks for noticing!" over 20 years ago...
"The Autobiographical rock song of Tim Minchin"
The second one...
Nobody Ever - besides himself perhaps - thought Tim Minchin 'Stayed Too Long'
Phil Daust definitely did
I dunno, if you go to the comments for Thank You God there's some loonies that think he did.
@@BlutigeTranen ah, yea maybe those who just can't handle the truth may wish he would leave >.>
"This is 9 and half minute jazz-backed beat poem about critical thinking"
Uhh, yes they did almost certainly, I thought it´s pretty obvious that this line is partly an innuendo to the fact that many of Tim Minchins songs are ~5 min, some even longer, not even gonna mention "Storm" and to the obvious juxtaposition that music topcharts usually are way shorter, 2 maybe 3 min, that they are less densely filled with text and that the text compared to Tims stuff seldom goes on detailed tangents like he does and many similar factors that most probably strongly influenced his musical career in general since he obviously does not conform to music industry standards of optimal marketability and sets an authentic representation of his ideas first and foremost. I don´t even want to know, in his many years, how often he went to a producing studio etc. pitched an album and after going through it their opinions could be summed up as "It´s not gonna sell very well. We've done studies, young people do not respond to this...You know, "introspective" material, or these "challenges-to-the-form", you know...Young people want jokes they can relate to, okay? You essentially Talked Too Much and Stayed Too Long.".
But what do I know, maybe I´m just my name and over-interpreting literally non-existant innuendos, or this is essentially common knowledge about the music industry mixed with art analysis 101 applied to an almost direct expression of a certain circumstance in a song by Tim Minchen, which when written down simply, but concisely and accessable by the public might nudge others to look at the individual words, the applied music theory and general structuring etc. in music, especially by people like Tim Minchin, less superficially and shows how potentially unfathomably rewarding that could be. Maybe some of them even apply such a modus operandi to other art-forms later on in their live.
Oops, looks like I Talked Too Much and Stayed Too Long.
I´m blaming it all on the coffee.
P.S. Yes, future potential replier, I´m very aware that the initial comment was an obvious hyperbole, but it took me Aeons to figure out since it starts with "Nobody Ever"
"Love child of Liberace and Edward Scissorhands"
Brilliant 😂
Just beat my favorite line from Joni Mitchell on Just Like This Train, "dreaming of the pleasure I'm gonna have watching your hairline recede my vain darling"!
Pretty sure it’s a direct quote from a scathing review he got when he first played in the UK.
Yeah, the cover of one of their albums is like a pianist version of Edward Scissorhands, it is indeed brilliant~
Very fitting, its a self-insult for how the certain masses would see mister Minchin's artist getup, especially on those certain live shows of theirs. That they paid to see an artistic genius hit keys with their bare toes.
Just... freakin... amazing! How does one person have so much talent? Damn you, Tim! Please stay too long! You have a fan for life!
Can I be in Tim's club though? I would probably too shy to speak to him, but I would love to just hang around and listen to the conversations.
Yeah, it called Minchkins and it’s over on Facebook 😉
Tim, this song is a ceritifed banger. Your writing is as sharp as always.
I am definitely adding this song to my husband's funeral playlist. He is notorious for both these qualities 😂😂.
I wish I could have played this to my father, he was notorious for both these qualities.
From what I can tell so far, Tim hasn't talked too much yet. I still want to hear what he has to say - and far from having stayed too long. The man's still young.
The old people’s home lucky enough to have Tim as a member (in many years time) will be so fecking popular they’ll be able to sell tickets for the communal room to hear him bang out his tunes...
That kind of couldn’t-give-a-feck attitude is what I’d like to have, especially when I’m older. Good on him,
Brilliant as always, keep it up Tim!
I love how he still got a jab in against Phil Daoust
Love it - Tim Minchin taking the mickey out of himself.
To me this is the truest speaking TIM on any recording
"I went hard at a Cardinal"
One of my favourite Humanists. And definitely the funniest 🤣
After week of work I solved issue in my company database while listening to that song. Thank You Tim :)
Possibly my very favourite Tim Minchin song.
Definitely my favourite sounding
The one person who gave this a thumbs-down needs to reevaluate their life
It was probably Phil Daoust
@@rubix_cubix9519 Lol or Cardinal Pell!
Please stay too long, Tim Minchin 🎉
I've followed Tim's work since a '09- this is, by far, my favourite Minchin era. Sophisticated, witty and fast-paced as usual, but this time as the human being, not the comedian. This song will always be right up there in my entire life.
He's a genius, but I still miss his comedy. World needs to laugh more.
@@ItomachaiMoroyoqui And yet his comedy is still apparent in this song. That is the genius of Tim Minchin.
May we all be so frustratingly persistent.
@Tim Minchin I loved your older stuff; *adore* your newer stuff. I encourage you to stay way, way too long!!
guess i drink too much... 8 drinks get me straightened up and 6 get me swingin... and yes, I'm obviously obsessed with this song... and I'll type too much and play too wrong
Yes! 🙂
This speaks to me on such a deep level. Too many times I have felt that I’ve said too much and overstayed my welcome.
Felt so good to hear I’m not the only one.
He is on my list of humans I would love to share a bottle of wine and talk about the world with.
Could I come along and just listen? Quietly in a corner? I’d just sip wine and soak it all in.
While I wholeheartedly agree, Tim's made it clear that he wouldn't want to join our club. Methinks we can only observe his genius from afar.
if ANYone had ever once said i didn't talk too much, or stay too long... I'd still be in shock, but I'll never be as brilliant as this mug
this song was made after tim sayed the title once after what he did that night
I absolutely love your expressions recognizing the personal perspectives of the irrelevance of self importance.
Damn it Tim, this is going to be stuck in my head all day long!
not just day, sorry but, this song'll be with you forever
This was definitely the stand out for us last night, I woke up humming it this morning so I'm very happy to be able to listen while I'm waiting for my CD & vinal to arrive.
If you aren't already, please feel free to check the Minchkins Facebook page 😎 We're obsessed with all things TM
A CD worth waiting for, wasn’t it? Really demonstrates his range. 👍
I love Tim’s versatility.
One of my favourite human beings.
as per usual excellent tune, that starts out iterating a timeline of his career and ended with a minchinian "here is the amount of giveafuckedness you can expect from me about what you think of me and my music". i am in awe of this mans abilities as an artist/songwriter. and as a person the words role model come to mind, pussy puns and all.
Minchinian-I love that. Let's make it a legit school of thought 😂
@@rachellinnjackson i haven't seen/heard anything from him so far that i consider a bad song. before she died my wife and i had a rule if you come into our house you had to listen to at least two of tim's songs. if nothing else i love him for making her last year a little more bearable. so yeah i think webster should make room in his little book for another word.
Brilliant humanist. Need me some Tim daily. Always looking for something new on UA-cam. 😂
AWESOME Tim!! No rock n roll nerd here. More a funky.. Bluesy. Ear wormy.... Hit record. Love it. 😎🎉🎊🇦🇺
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥awesome track. you didn't talk enough and didn't stay long enough. Legend
Can't wait to see what your old man balls bring to the table one day
You just keep getting better and better, Tim!
The lovechild of Liberace and Edward Scissorhands.....PMSL what a way to describe yourself. LOVED IT.
What a brilliant song. He is so talented!
Yep. It's official, I adore you!
Amazing song Tim Minchin back to your best 10/10
One of your best TIM
Finally, Tim got himself a theme song :D
I ADORE this. You had me at the Groucho reference in the first line. "Talked too much, stayed too long" is definitely a phrase I'm going to keep in my back pocket.
A tune I can just jam out too. Lyrically funny and clever. Ticks all boxes. Love it man.
Why do I feel like this has to be in a film?
I mean, his TV show was planned for release next Saturday, although I dunno I it will cos of Corona

Genius again.
Great song. "I'm not even slightly interested in whether I'm remembered."
The Wizard of Words ! Love it 🥰
Can't get this song out of my head. Opening's gonna be my new ringtone
Come back Tim . You are a very talented performer . You didn't stay too long at all . Love all your performances. Love from the UK .
rock n roll Tim
Tim, you get better with time! Keep on truckin...talking and staying too long!👏👏👏👏
Wow, really good! This genre fits you so much!
Man, this is one of the best of your songs I've ever listened to. And I don't really think many of them are any less than amazing.
Reminds me of "only fools and horses" theme tune 🤣🤣 love u Tim xx
Feels like such a vintage song
Love the musical style and really digging the keyboard. Man, can you play!
This is fast becoming my favourite song 👍🏼
They are all SO wonderful! I’m partial to Apart Together, maybe because I’m old and see the end coming. It would be nice to go out with someone Ioved, even if it meant freezing to death.
Every line drips with music and comedy genius - pure gold.
This is an absolute bop
happy to know you'll be around a long time :)
Tim back at it again with the amazing music.
Now this.
This fucking slaps.
His performance of this on CBS James Cordon is on UA-cam. A must see. Tim and company being sassy beat jazzy. 🎤
I LOVE this! The whole album is great. Great job Tim!
This sticks in my head..in the best way! Can't wait to see his show again soon!
This song is fantastic! Well played, nice work!
This is just a wonderful song
I heard this last night at the concert. Spent an hour after looking for the song to add to my playlist, and how happy I was to find it this morning! Can't wait to get the album.
This is superb, I feel like I am back in the sixties with Greenwich Village truths!
The base is epic
Tim. This is absolutely brilliant and what an amazing talent you've aquired for yourself. To call this a gift is belittleling all your hard work you've done, so I won't go there. Lyrics, chords, orchestration, the jazzy interlude - I love it all!
I was sold years ago listening to 'Storm', 'Cheese' and 'I can have a dark side'. Then I discovered that you've sung the lead of Judas in Loyd Webbers JCS - the favorite part in one of my all time favorite musicals (and I suspect my beginning towards atheism in the late 70's). Your piano work is fabulous and your voice is stunning, but man: Great as they both are in themselves and together, they're both dwarfed by your masterful, overall musical prowess. With regards to genres, you're a mountain climber that has conquered all the summits. Cheers for sharing this and have a good one!
this one slaps actually
What a fantastic ars poetica!
Thank you SO MUCH for this, Tim!
TIM SWINGS! I love it. Got goosebumps for the last third. Apparently there’s no such thing as too much Tim Minchin when it comes to your art and performances. Who are the backup singers? Just that wonderful touch to perfect the scene.
Background singers are his band members. Same kitsch as Tim. Fun to watch. 😂
Yay!!!
i have watched this play too much and stayed too long
I LOOOVE THIS ONE !!
Quite possibly your best yet. I love the New Orleans vibes I get. Really like a young Dr John and John Cleary.
Oooooh! I love this! Lyric videos are my jam 😉❤
Absolutely iconic.
The work with rhythm here is insane! Tim never ceases to amaze me!
Fantastic song, Tim! Really loved it.
Hell yeah!! Love it!
Yes Tim! I love it so much!
I love this song! Tim, thank you for being you.
Oh, yeah.
We love you, Tim!
I LOVE this song! Hopefully someday I’ll be able to write a song about my life like this.
Man this is the best song ive never heard in years! Always loved you content, but man this is a good jam! GJ
That was amazing. Great job Tim
Yay, new favourite song!
I love the guitar riff on the chorus so much
This is one of my favourite songs from the album
Best song off the album! should have been a single
Glorious
Love it! Great as always Tim
Thank you Tim. You truly are a leg end ❤🦵 🌿
