*Apart Together* (Lyrics)
KCRW
On the way to a show
Heard the story of an elderly couple
Found dead in their mobile home
They’d been there a month they say
Seemed to be no decay
I guess the upside of freezing to death
Is that you tend to stay that way
Locked in each other’s arms
Eyes closed and faces calm
They may have lain there ‘til spring
If it weren’t for the ping of their smoke alarm
God sure works in mysterious ways
Died of power bills left unpaid
Found by a neighbour who heard the ping
Dropped around offering
Double As
I think this could last forever
Girl let’s fall apart together
I can handle the entropy
If you promise to stay with me
I give you my heart knowing things fall apart
Praying you will decay with me
Locked in each other’s arms
Eyes closed and faces calm
In the morning a new life will dawn
So maybe don’t set the alarm
Baby I think this could last forever
Girl let’s fall apart together
Girl let’s fall apart together

Imagine Tim hadn´t made it and he was now doing accounting.
I hate to imagine how many Tims we have lost to this system.
???? If you don’t get your taxes done you go to jail… Sounds like a pretty important job😂😂😂😂
D H I assume that rather than questioning the importance or relevancy of accountants, he was referring to how many really creative and genius artists never found success in the industry and as a result ended up working jobs they weren’t meant for. i.e. musical talent doesn’t equal commercial success.
Yeah dude capitalism is the worst
raultejedor I’m pretty sure he’s unique.
@@juliewake4585 nope, there are millions of scientists and artists that could never be because of capitalism. The few Bezos and his lackeys are stopping humanity from reaching its potential.
My husband and I love this song. He is dying of cancer. We sit in our motorhome and cry and think. This man is a genius! Fantastic wonderful writer!!
I'm praying for you Deborah you and your husband's
I am sorry.
If you want to tell me about your husband, I promise I will tell my kids a story about him or someone like him tonight. It will be a happy story no doubt, so they sleep well because so many good people exist.
If you and he so wish.

My wife recently passed but she would have loved this. She loved your songs.
Condolences, man
My husband passed earlier this year. I’m sorry for your loss.
I’m so sorry for your loss. I wish you well.
so sorry for your loss

No one does “hauntingly beautiful” half so well as Tim Minchin!
Absolutely - I went from smiling to crying all in one song!
@@SophiaDady really? you started out smiling about the elderly couple who froze to death cuz they couldn't pay their electric bill? what point in the song made you smile? don't get it
and how is it remotely "hauntingly beautiful" that this happens in the US?
@@johanvajse8410 It's his underlying humour throughout
😊 The smile comes from knowing that you are about to experience Tim Minchin’s art. 😁
@@dh5645 Very much so!
Being elderly along with my elderly husband in today's regular world is difficult enough, but add the pandemic and it can become absolutely frightening. But, today, I am grateful to find that even when the U.S. Mail begins to fail and you hear talk of de-funding Social Security and Medicare in America, I just realized how much MORE important was the story of THIS man and THIS woman that I never even heard of until just now in Mr. Minchin's song. There's SO many important things that are being ignored because of partisan pandemic politics. Why don't we raise a statue to the two old people who died together in a frozen embrace, after a lifetime of caring for one another - all because the heating bills weren't paid. That's what we should all be caring about - each other - instead of being so divided by things that just. don't. matter. in the long run. This has to be the saddest song I've ever heard. Bar none.
Nice song🔥
Here's the lyrics

@@Slidemusic_ She heard the lyrics. She is offering her interpretation. Listen to what she is hearing in the midst of her reality. To her at this time it is the saddest song. Maybe not dismiss her by saying 'Nice song. Here's the lyrics.'
Yes agree
As profoundly beautiful as this song and THIS man and This woman. Take care of your lifeboat. Don’t let people poke holes in it.
"God works in mysterious ways*
Sarcasm in a love song. Perfection.
I don't think that it's necessarily sarcasm. A lot of atheists use similar expressions in spite of being atheist.
I can't imagine a universe where he didn't painstakingly comb over every single word of this song to make sure it was literally perfect. I don't think a common expression which goes against every belief he's ever had ended up in there by accident, but that's just my opinion.
Gary Johnson Nero is right, this was answered by Tim a couple days ago on Reddit: "I find the human need to cry out into the darkness very emotional. The use of "lord knows" or "oh god" etc are semantic traditions that occupy a space that is hard to fill with other language. The words are a shortcut to a certain emotional state of mind that people connect to intuitively because of our religious history. Or something like tht."
@@honeyconeman goddamn that man can write 😂
I mean, even his comments on reddit are brilliantly written
Nice song🔥
Here's the lyrics
ua-cam.com/video/E2_LCMaA9JQ/v-deo.html
After breaking up with an extraordinary woman, I've been dealing with depression for over a year. Now I'm finally healing, finally getting out of the pit. If I had heard this song a week or two ago now I would be completelly destroyed on the inside. But healing is a weird process, and now I only feel melancholic and a bit lonely when I hear it, which I think is a huge win. If any of you is going through rough times, don't give up. Even when you feel in your lowest, remember that life can be surprisingly good and you deserve to be ok again. Greetings from Spain.
I always try to "hang on" for the NEXT Tim Minchin creation : )
Keep smiling mate!
❤️
Alone for 16 years after 22 years of marriage. Live in USA. COVID-19 out of control. Plenty to be depressed about and not much hope.
@@janinecalland3223 Tim Minchin is creating there's still hope.
"It's got a trumpet in it, I like trumpets". - Tim Minchin.
The trumpet is brilliant.
Typical Tim. Pretending superficial, being anything but.
I like this simple almost childlike Tim quote as much as I like any of his wonderfully crafted, complex lyrics.
Tim Minchin is just an absolutely incredibly talented individual. He may not be Bono or Bowie, but he is so much more. To many he is an inspiration and we are so fortunate to have the opportunity to raise a glass to him.
Of course he is a rock and roll nerd with a heart of gold and a platinum mind i'm grateful to have grown up with him rising as this terrific artist i'll raise mine as well cheers
I wouldn't have flown to Australia to see Bono. Maybe I would've for Bowie. But I did just that last year to see Tim's show, Back. Well worth it. And now I want to move to Australia.
raise a glass to freedom.
Shannon Dupuis that must have been amazing! How fortunate you are! Seeing him perform is a pipe dream - not sure if he has any plans to tour Alaska.
He is certainly something else x
Tim Minchin is the best thing since sliced bread. I still can't get "I'll Take Lonely Tonight" out of my head.
Why is sliced bread always the thing we go back to? I think he's way better than sliced bread!! ;-)
Same here!
@@jeremyhenderson5887 That's because you probably think of american, british or australian bread. Pardon the brag - as a german there is not much to feel national pride for - but as a citizen of the nation with the world's best bread I can tell you, being compared to freshly baked and sliced bread is the highest form of praise.
@@badlydrawn7476 Fair point, though the point of exceptionalism is the bread itself, rather than the slicing, which more or less implies that, before presliced bread existed, consumers had great trouble slicing it for themselves!!
@Badly Drawn- I eat German bread! At least i call it German bread. It’s not fresh and I refer to it as my brick-o-bread 😄
I'm a simple man. I see Tim Minchin, I press like.
I see your comment. I press like.
This one came with a ten-minute cry for me, without even hitting close to home. I think it is immeasurably good, particularly by ways of sadness and beauty.
Philosophy and humor often go hand in hand with highly intelligent people. I love the direction Tim's music appears to be going.
Crazy to think that this guy has a song about cheese. This man knows what he is doing.
and of course ... The Pope Song!
hey! Cheese is a classic right up there with Stairway to Heaven!
Nice song🔥
Here's the lyrics

@@Slidemusic_ lyrics also in the description. We g thanks boss.
I went to see him in Cardiff last October front row. He came out and sat on the floor in front of us and had a chat in the interval with a cup of tea. Then during cheese he jumped off the stage screamed cheese in my face then carried on 😂
I'm so glad my senior English teacher made us listen to one of Tim's songs.
Which song? I am trying to think which would make sense and am struggling

Beautiful music and lyrical writing have much in common with one another. Analyzing one is helpful to writing the other.
I'm not crying. YOU'RE crying.
I'm not crying. YOU are, I just have itchy eyes🤭
Busted...
Well.. Mr. Minchin sure has quietly made himself one of the best songwriters of all time.
always was.
I am really enjoying these 'people' stories that Tim has been telling lately, even if some are a little melancholie.
They're all a bit melancholic really, his comedic music often had melancholy in the lyrics if not in the melody (I suppose that's kind of musical satire's MO). I love his older works and it's been super interesting hearing the shift in tonal qualities to match the lyrical depth that was already there.
I do hope he gives us some more lighthearted songs soon though, My poor tear ducts can't handle all this exercise.
I'm dying from heart failure and lung cancer.
Bless you for making this!
You have no idea what it means to me. ☺️❤️
i usually joke about how there are enough love songs in the world, but i've been wrong. i needed that song
I feel like most “love” songs are lust & passion focused or idealistic/beginning of relationship vibes.
Tim writes love songs filled with shared experiences and deep-rooted affection.
I was absolutely unprepared for what this did to me. And the trumpet, my goodness. This is the best song I've heard in some time.
I met my husband in 9th grade, 1966. We have been married since 1971. This song, this story, is beautifully relevant.
a song that nobody asked for but everyone needed...
This song gives me courage to see the possible beauty in the inevitable. Thanks Tim for talking about the difficult stuff.
We saw Tim last night in Newtown. I had never heard this song before for whatever reason but I bawled like a baby in my wifes arms. It was so beautiful. Just thank you for your honest and soul breaking (affirming) words.
He’s done it - an existential love song
So ein unendlich trauriges, aber auch wunderschönes Lied! Das kann nur Tim Minchin🥰
I keep seeing this and getting excited. Then I click on it and remember it isn't premiering until tomorrow. Can't wait to watch it.
I just did that again... And I already read your comment.
What a shame we can't give more than one thumbs up.
Same
Almost time now though ☺.
and it was certainly worth the wait wouldn't you agree?
“...In the morning a new life will dawn, So maybe don’t set the alarm.....”
Darn you! Beautiful, timeless, moving, thoughtful, funny, arghhh! IMHO one of the best songs ever written, how, just how do you do it? this mix / video transcends ‘now’ and takes me to a wonderful place.
Just heard this song for first time 20 minutes ago on Grant Stott's show (BBC Radio Scotland) after reading about 63 year old lady found dead alone in her home in Renfrewshire. Seemed appropriate to look it up.
🙏 For the lady who died alone and thank you Tim Minchin
CAN YOU FEEL THE TEARS QUEUING IN MY DUCTS
Yes! I went from smiling to crying all in a second!
Absolutely stunning. Thank you. I’m gonna go hug my wife.
such a great piece of art in every way.
thought it was gonna be sad and make me cry, actually it didn't, the lyric, the vocal, the background music (that bloody trumpet solo is out of this world!), and the visual....
everything was so peaceful, rather than make you sad, it makes you calm and makes you think, about life and death, about relationship, about many other things........
love it

Best quote in the series!
I love the purity of Tim's love message. This is a lot like his song You Grew On Me and several others where love is transcendent above all things.
You Grew on Me is like the comedic version of this song. I love how many different versions of Tim there are.
I also love how Rock and Roll Nerd is the opposite of Nothing Ruins Comedy.
Hearing this made me feel like I could live another day. Really. The most beautiful thing. Thanks
Premiered at midnight in Hawaii..I am falling asleep with love of my life in my arms listening to this..blissful moment.
Thank you for sharing that. May that strong and loving bond last a lifetime.
I wish you thousands more nights like that to come.

Musicals!
@@MichaelLasotaTWalready done it. Hopefully more though :)
I owe it to Tim to recover from depression, I was feeling completely alone and he made me remember who I am. Love him forever. His funny sarcastic songs are so amazing. I would not listen to this new style he has chosen in that state but I feel lucky to get to see his dark side, I guess we all have one.
Beautifully put. And yes, Dark Side now seems like a foretelling
I ugly cry every time i hear this song. every. damn. time. It got me through two weeks in ICU with pneumonia (well, only the parts i wasn't on the ventilator). Just to be back at home with another warm, loving person snuggled up to me.
My music family can always walk right in through the den door...no need to knock, just give a halloo and pop on in. I'm so happy that you are all in this world!
Welp - thought I was coming in for a laugh instead Im in tears... Really beautiful, Thanks Tim!
I listen to Tim Minchin everytime I go to sleep
Tim Minchin is fantastic
This is one of the most heartbreaking-ly beautiful songs I have ever heard
WHOAH!! Such a beautiful, sad, heartbreaking and moving song. The entire track is BEAUTIFUL! Oh Tim, you’ve done it again. Proud Aussie right here.... a genius!!
Av just heard this morning and looked him up what a lovely song from great Britain x
I feel like (smart) comedians have the best ability to hit us in the feels. Tim Minchin always got me in the feels. Love the new music.
Whenever I hear songs like this, I can't help but think of an ex I lost a couple of years ago. Was the only person I've ever truly felt a connection with and probably the only person I ever will. Would've stuck through everything with her if she had let me but mental health got in the way. So sad as I loved her completely. "I can handle the entropy If you promise to stay with me"... sadly she did not. I wish we could've stayed friends. I hope she has found someone who loves her in every way. So sad when you lose someone you love, whether it is through death, break up or other. I hope all of us lost souls find someone again. ❤
♥️
The saddest.. most beautiful song I think Ive ever heard.
Try "If we were vampires" by Jason Isbell
"I can handle the entropy
If you promise to stay with me
I give you my heart knowing things fall apart

So beautiful. Thank you, Tim.
not so lonely with tim around, cheers big ears!
Great work! So beautiful!
Tim, I laugh and cry, listening to your wonderful songs. No one again causes such diverse emotions. Thank you for everything. Love from Russia❤️🇷🇺
I have no words... another layer to this man for me to admire. And allow me to say hello to his family and thank you for the love and support you all provide each other thru the good and bad, easy and frustration moods of an artist. Respect to you all.
I am so glad my English teacher has a song analysis in the course it’s just brought me closer to this song even 4 years later
Oh, Tim. I adore this new emotional style that you've embraced. Don't ever stop, and always remember that you're a rock'n'roll nerd. You represent the best of us.
I love this man and everything he does. Another piece of brilliance.
best break up healing music my god i just found about this guy but man he got the healing touch to a broken heart
Plenty more where this comes from too.
This is so... romantic. The true, real-life kind.
No one else could actually take the piss and get away with it. . This takes a legend. . One that does such antics while smiling and having an absolute ball. . Blessed to be a wordsmith and on top of this Tim is a beautiful piano player. Love Tim he would be one I'd invite to my table. X
Brilliant wordplay and lyrics from Tim Minchin, as always... The creepiest love song ever written!!
I just can't wait I absolutely adore this man and his view on life it's so funny because it is exactly almost opposite to mine but I don't care he opens my world up to the most amazing things. I watch and listen to him and I watch and listen to Russell Brand and Eckhart Tolle and Paul Ferrini and Matthew McConaughey plus lol a hundred others but Tim is so different from me and I love that. I listen to him and respect his opinion because it's never some cookie cutter version. I respect it because it really is him it is his truth, his comedy and his life. Thank you sir... Shelly Kemp Jones
The wait was SO worth it! Such a beautiful song x
Tim, how can you so incredibly funny, incredibly poignant and then write something so moving like this. A haunting lyrical painting... Well done.
I’ve been obsessed with this song for a few weeks now, and the more I listen to the details of its sound the more it amazes me
Stop making me cry so much, man.
Tim is a horrifically underrated genius.
What a way to be remembered as a couple who were otherwise forgotten.
Such an under-rated song and musician... Holy crap this song is so beautiful and sad...
and here she is!
"I can handle the entropy. If you promise to stay with me. I'll give you my heart knowing things fall apart, praying you will decay with me" must be one of the best heart dying best verses this universe will give us. Thank you for that. Yes, this could, definitley, last for ever.
Now that’s what I call a love song ❤️💔
Another incredible song from an incredible genius, deeply moving subject of love eternally ty Tim
Music and video: in my universe two beautiful pieces of art...thanx ❣
Absolutely beautiful Tim 😭. The film clip is mesmerising. And that trumpet solo... no words.
Amazing video to go with an amazing song. I never knew that a trumpet solo could make me cry. Who needs God when you have Tim Minchin.
Astonishing song AGAIN Tim Minchin. And that trumpet wow!
Well not only on the song and album, but I needed a place to write about this. It happened 4 days ago, after my husband told me the guy playing Judas in JSC 2012 was also a comedian (what!?). So I watched all the funny songs, haven't heard any of them before (I wasnt much into UA-cam 10 years ago, and we clearly couldn't see Tim on tv here in Russia). Was watching on a train and laughing out loud, which is not common, I usually only laugh in company. But then there is "White wine" and I find myself crying suddenly, which is even less common. I think that was where you got me, Tim. So I watched all the funny stuff again, all the interviews, and than I thought this new album could also be good after all. Now I am listening to it for two days in a row, and how's that!? This is amazing how you put that special feeling into everything you do, whether it is mocking or a love song, that seems like a thousands other songs at the start. Just with a couple of words, you turn it all upside down, and it is about every song on the album. I am completely overwhelmed and so thankful. This is so much the way I see things myself, but have no power to express that. Thank you!
Ahhh dude Tim!!! You’re releasing a song on my birthday just for me!!!!?!?!? Dude, thank you, that’s really sweet of you.
Yet another surprise evolution from multi talented Tim Minchin !
Well done ya genius wacky, godly being you. Keep the stars in your eyes.
I love everything Tim Minchin writes and records. His public performances - my heart!
Hard to imagine Tim doing sad, yet beautiful music; but, wow, he does it well! This made me want to cry.
my wife was his number 1 stalker (i was satisfied being a big fan) for about three years from the minute i introduced his music to her. in her last year no matter how much pain she was in or how depressed she was all i had to do was put on tim and she would brighten up. after she died i was just this side of wanting to join her, and i heard carry you, (the kids and i all have necklaces with her ashes in them) then i heard the absence of you and was able to put a name to the different pain of her leaving me at one point (we separated for a while all my fault) and the vacuum where my heart used to be after she died. i still want to be with her but i know she's still with me so i can wait until it's my time.
❤
This man is such an exceptional songwriter
Man, your serious (not comedy) songs are always absolutely epic.
Love love this. Thank you once again. Your talent never ceases to amaze me. May the world be kind to you and your family.
Beautiful. He finds lyrics like nobody else.
Absolutely stunning Tim. I don't know how you keep doing it, but keep doing it. ❤
I totally get you Tim and have been a fan for years. White wine in the sun is genius. I lost my dad last year. Fabulous song x
So beautiful I almost overlooked the assertion that a sensible neighbor would think a fire alarm operated on AA batteries.
This song reminds me of the style of many Japanese novelists/literature. Like Haruki Murikami, Soseki Natsume, Yasunari Kawabata. They seem to have that sort of profound and melancholic or nostalgic feeling but the words seem so ordinary and simple. It's like 2 + 2 making 10 or mixing grey and white and getting vibrant colors.
Tim Minchin just nails everything he does. Emotion, wit, humour, pathos... saw him live last year and came out on such a high. And so damn attractive too!
Yeah that guy is really deep.
Deep ass, bro
Yeah, I noticed that...

I wasn't expewcting this song to be so sad, I love it.
Tim, I love this so much and although I am in my twilight years & without a human partner, The dogs and I cuddle up close and huddle under the Doona - knowing that despite the overdue power bills, one day the sun will surely fucking shine for us 🧡
I went through a tough breakup right before “lonely tonight” came out and Tim’s summer sad songs have been giving me life (esp “Carry you”)
I didn't even get to the intermission before I started crying wow just wow
What an eargasm
Such a lyrical genius, grasp of language and musical composition I'd phenomenal. Incredible artist and comedian. Would love to see another live show.
I didn't even realize Tim was making non-comedic music now i'm over here bawling wtf
He is a brilliant songwriter whatever he does. He also wrote the music for Matilda and Groundhog Day the musicals.
What a beautiful song xxx
