    What’s the best way to mix heavy bass in Reaper?
    Mixing heavy bass shouldn’t require a bunch of fancy trickery and 3rd party plugins.
    As a matter of fact, you can successfully mix heavy bass in Reaper using the stock plugins that come with Reaper.
    As engineers, we all tend to obsess over gear and it’s just not necessary.
    When we focus too much on unnecessary gear, we tend to lose sight of what’s important.
    We think we need a bunch of expensive stuff to achieve the results we’re really after, but in reality it’s just not true.
    The truth is that it’s all about HOW you use your DAW and plugins..not the DAW and plugins themselves.
    When dialing in a bass guitar mix, strategic EQ cuts, simple compression moves and a little distortion is all we need.
    You don’t want to overdo or neglect any of the key processes.
    In this video, I demonstrate how you can dial in a killer metal bass mix within Reaper in a matter of minutes.

    Yes, yes, and frickin' yes.
    Bass within the mix is such a challenge - and I want to hear it, not bury it. Nice work.

    If only this came out last night, I was struggling trying to get a decent bass tone for something I'm working on haha. I finally got "something" but, at least the project isnt actually finished yet. It's not too late! Here's a "like". Will be back later!

    Also didn't know there is a amp/cab modeler in the stock reaper plugins !

    • @boyreporter
      @boyreporter 3 роки тому

      There are two; the other's a dual modeler. Though I haven't yet found granular enough control over the mix of the two amps.

    It to me this makes so much more sense than splitting the high and the low end and forgetting about the mid range the baby that’s needed to make the bass audible on low end system.

    Awesome idea to provide the whole project to the viewers. It’s always the best way to learn anything if you can play around with it for yourself. Hope you do more like that in the future!
    Different question: double tracked rhythm guitars. Do you always pan them hard left/right or what is your usual approach here?
    I’m currently working on a project that has a certain TomMorello‘ish vibe to it. And I feel like it sounds a lot more „in your face“ with the guitar tracks being more centred.

    • @FrightboxRecording
      @FrightboxRecording  3 роки тому +1

      I always pan my rhythm guitars hard L and R. As a matter of fact, most of my tracks are either hard left, right or center. I'm a huge fan of the LCR style of mixing.

      @@FrightboxRecording I've finally found the time the past weekend to fool around with the template - and boy, was that a lot of fun! I think I've spent two hours with it, just playing around and getting a feel for what each component adds to the final sound. Combined with the template files, I'd say that this video has made it to my top 3 mixing-related clips this year. Easily.
      Have you considered doing this more often in the future? The project files don't need to be more complex than this one but imo, but having them in addition to the video boosts the whole experience and learning effect to a whole new level. Or maybe starting a Patreon thing and having the templates accessible there? Just a thought. Anyways, keep up with what you're doing. You're definitely going in the right direction! :)

    I have to check this limiter, I've been using Reaper for a couple of years, but always used Waves or Izotope, this limiter sounds very nice !

  • @chrismarcyy

    I want to add, it seems obvious to anyone who's been in this game for a minute, but this works as long as you have fresh bass strings. if you use strings that were used on Napoleon's ship, getting this result will be next to impossible.

    Thanks man! You explained it so well. If I use a bass VST (modo bass 2 specifically), does it count as DI or amplified signal?

    • @FrightboxRecording
      @FrightboxRecording  Рік тому

      If you're recording straight into your interface, you're recording a DI.

    Hi there,
    When you recorded the bass guitar, did you "Arm" the 2nd, 3rd or 4th track? Or did you Arm all three?
    Sub, Amp or Disto, or all three

    Cool video man! There's something weird in the editing of the video though. Around 2:50 you are talking about the EQ and suddenly there's a cut and you are suddenly showing your compressor settings. Just let you know. Keep up the good work with his awesome content man.

    • @FrightboxRecording
      @FrightboxRecording  3 роки тому +3

      Yup you're right, I somehow screwed up the edit when I exported the video. The compressor was next in my chain after the EQ so luckily no info was lost. Thanks for watching!

    • @FrightboxRecording

      Yes...I heavily filter everything below 500-700HZ. My goal is to have as little drums in my overheads and as much of the cymbals as possible.
