I started learning to sew when I was in 7th g rade,my mom was raising 5 children n my dad was injured in war. I was Bless with a pedaling sewing machine.I started making my own skirts and dresses with some materials my mom was able to buy very lil.I really enjoyed sewing with what I had to use.THEN I GOT MARRIED EXTREMELY YOUNG N I TOOK A CHANCE TO APPLY FOR CREDI AT A SINGER SEWING MACHINE PLACE.I THEN WAS ABLE TO SEW FOR MYSELF N MY CHILDREN N WHOEVER ESLE NEEDED SOMETHING MADE NO CHARGE. CAUSE I KNEW WHAT IT WAS LIKE NOT TO BE ABLE TO BUY CLOTHES.WHEN 2 OF OLDEST DAUGHTERS GOT MARRIED I MADE ALL THE BRIDESMAIDS DRESSES FREE. I DID IT CAUSE I KNOW WHAT ITS LIKE TO BE POOR N NOT ABLE TO AFFORD TO BUY CLOTHING.😢 GOD IS SO GOOD TO US WE NEED TO PASS ON GODS LOVE TO THOSE IN NEED. MY STORY TRUST GOD HE IS OUR LIGHT WHEN IN NEED HE WILL DIRECT OUR PATH.❤

I started around age 6, am 60 now. My mom was a seamstress and also volunteered at a nearby convent to do all their alterations. She also made all my clothes from Junior House remnants. She bought me a toy machine but it had a real needle. As I continued to show interest, she bought me a basic Kenmore and taught me some of the finer details. I sewed on and off as an adult but took up quilting 5-6 years ago. Hearing the hum of the machine is still a soothing sound to me as it reminds me of my mom.

Hi Laura, this is Laura, sharing my husband’s UA-cam account. I started sewing in Junior High Home Economics class. My teacher is still one of my favorite teachers ever. She even made the news during the beginning of the Covid lockdown, she was stuck on a cruise ship that wasn’t allowed to dock

My sewing journey began at the age of nine by watching my Mom and grandmother sew. In my early 20’s I went from sewing my clothes, to sewing quilts and children’s clothes and home decor. It’s the best therapy I have found for battling my PTSD, because it’s something that calms me. I now have my grandmother’s Singer Featherweight that she bought new, and use it a lot. ❤️

I took home economics in the ninth grade. Our teacher taught us all the basics and we made a dress with facings, zipper, gathered skirt onto the bodice as a first project. After I learned all the terminology, my mother, who was a proficient and perfectionist seamstress taught me many tricks and techniques to make my sewing better. Sewing is one of my creative outlets. I love quilt making, sewing fancy and everyday clothes for family members and hand embroidery. Thank you for all you do to keep us interested and successful as we sew.

I started sewing as a little girl. With needles and thread, scrap fabrics, cardboard, beads, my dolls wore the highest fashions, footwear, and hats. A few years later, my beloved auntie taught me the basics of machine sewing and when I was 14, my parent bought me a sewing machine of my own for Christmas. My high school wardrobe was like no others’. When we built our new home 4 yrs ago, we designed it with the sewing room of my dreams. I am 74 years old now, with several sewing machines of various kinds, and when I sew something wonderful for my family or friends, I think of how my auntie blessed the lives of so many by sharing her gift! ❤️

My mother was a beautiful seamstress but wouldn't teach me! She sent me to Singer Sewing school when I was 12 years old, this was when they had competition, I won 1st place!! I'll be 76 in 2 weeks and I'm still at it, so it's been 64 years of bliss. I sent my daughter when she was 12 and she is now 55 and still at it, a wonderfully fulfilling hobby and outlet. Thank you for letting us share our stories.

I started sewing in home Economics class. My mom and Grandmother always sewed, but I never used my Mom’s machine until I had started classes. I sewed a lot of my clothes in high school and college.
After I left home life got complicated and I never picked up sewing again until the pandemic. I sewed over 300 masks for charity, family and friends. Then I was hooked. Simple small projects like bowl cozies and pot holders, 3 (not so perfect) baby quilts, 4 soft books.
After a few years I am now into crossbody bags, purses with all kinds of pockets, collage quilts, and I am enjoying your mystery quilt series! Thanks for feeding my addiction!

I learned to sew in school when the girls took cooking and sewing classes while the boys took shop and something else. I was in 8th grade so around 14 years old. Our first project was an apron, half size that was gathered and tied around the waist. Then we learned how to read a pattern and sewed a skirt for ourselves. Well I loved it so much I sewed a lot of skirts for myself! I remember an old Brother machine that I set up in the dining room. I'll be 70 this year and I love to sew quilts, home decor, bags, etc., and an occasional halloween costume for the grands.

When I was a bride, she gave me my great-grandmother’s Singer and suggested I go back for lessons, which I did. Fell in love with sewing and still sew to this day. Love your videos.😊

I had learnt a tiny bit of embroidery and loved it at the age of 7. Then my Mam showed me how to do a running stitch ... that was a whole new world. I can remember doing these first stitches and the feeling it gave me, and how I knew that THIS was something I really wanted to do, and even more so than the embroidery. Seeing the point of the needle glide into the fabric then out again was wonderful. I still love to hand sew - and machine sewing too with my Singer treadle which is the same age as me from 1948. I learnt a lot from you Laura when I was learning to quilt, thank you for all those tips.

I started sewing about 62 years ago. I don’t recall my first project but have fond memories of sewing Winnie the Pooh character’s when I was very young. Both my mom and grandmother sewed and also quilted. I continued sewing up to my late 20’s but then I found it was less expensive to purchase mine and my family’s clothing. Fast forward to early 50s where I took up Quilting and that has been what I’ve been doing ever since. I’m now 69 years old.

I was an 8 year old with a GI Joe that I wanted to dress up like Superman. My mother got sick and was institutionalized when I was a little younger than this so unfortunately she was not able to help. I had access to all her sewing notions and fabrics so I taught myself how to sew by hand and was able to make my boy-dolls clothes and gear however crude they turned out. At one point I took some sewing books out of the library and read them extensively like I did on a number of other topics as well.
I learned how to sew by hand well enough that I've always been able to mend my own clothes and now finally at the age of 58, I've recently started to sew with a machine. I've made many new curtains and pillowcases for around my house and made a few leather zipper bags etc. I put a new placket and snaps on an old worn coat I use out by the barn. I made a vinyl guitar amp cover and a few other things. I'm now setting it aside because spring has me busy at other things but as soon as I build myself a sewing room, I plan on getting into it a little more. In case you haven't picked up on it, I'm a middle-aged man.

I did take classes in jr high and high school, but never did well. When I moved from CA to TX, a neighbor taught me to read the patterns and I slowly got it. Many years ago unto now, I go in spurts. I like sewing but have slowed down a lot. I use to sew up things so fast and now need to think of what to do next. It is always a learning process. I enjoy watching and learning your tips and all of sewing. Thank you for the videos.

I am the middle child of 11 !! I either had clothes too big or too small. So by 3rd grade (age 9/10) I learn to adjust the too big clothes or cut up the too small things to use the fabric. So yes, to this day (I am 63½), I shop for fabric. If I see a dress on clearance I usually grab the biggest they have. That just means more fabric. I shop secondhand stores for fabric. Whether it be an xxxxL dress or sheet or ANYTHING I may grab it. I added the triangle in my jean's legs before it was ever in style lol. Oh the memory road you just took me down. THANK YOU! Great memories!!

I learned to sew around the fourth or fifth grade. One of the nuns at our school offered to teach us after school. When making my first dress, I put the sleeves in backwards!!! I was so proud of that dress even with the backwards sleeves. My mom didn’t see so any help I needed, my aunt or cousin came to my rescue! I made most all of my four daughters’ dresses growing up and passed my love of sewing on to them (well most of them). Now it’s mostly scrub caps and project bags, American Girl clothes and a bit of quilting. But, look out when I retire!!!!!!

So far back I remember mom picking me up from the back of her sewing chair. I was trying to get to the machine. I remember telling her I can do it to. Then she give me a needle and thread with a piece of cloth. My idea of playing with dolls was to make cloths while others role play. I am now 67 still going a little slower but going. I have taught my daughter, two nieces, my triplet grand kids and a wonderful bunch of homeschool in the Co-Op.

I started sewing more than 70 years ago before I ever went to school. I stayed with my grandmother during the day and she taught me so many life skills. She had a treadle machine and they would put a box on the treadle so I could operate it on my own. At age 8, Santa brought me my first "my" sewing machine. It was a portable and I used it until I was 22ish when I bought a Singer Touch n Sew. You name it and I have sewn it even a quilted turtle shell costume for my son to be a ninja turtle. Currently I have 2 machines, plus an embroidery machine and a sweet 16 set up with at least 3 more machines around the house. I'm widowed now and started quilting after 26 years ago. I always tell my friends that it isn't that I like to sew but I have to - just like breathing.

I am now 71 and I started sewing at about 6 or 7 on my grandmother's treadle Singer machine. First with old wash rags and bits of rick rack and lace. I remember my first Home Ec class in middle school and having to pretend to not know anything so the teacher would not get mad. I made all my clothes in high school as well as shirts for my little brother and dresses for my mother. It is a rare day that I do not sew! Most of my time is spent on making quilts which I quilt on my domestic Brother PQ1500SL machine!

I started sewing at age 7 in second grade. I remember the a-line skirt I made first that had 6 panels to it. My mom taught me how to do it because I showed an interest. I even remember her teaching me how to match the fabric on the seams! It was a print that included little dolls wearing Dutch wooden shoes, sort of like Hummel figures. I guess it's a pretty nice memory to be able to keep for more than 60 years! Now I'm a passionate quilter.

I learnt hand-embroidery in primary school from a sewing teacher & absolutely loved it. My mother also did lots of dress making, so I started using her singer treadle also whilst in primary school. My first garment, at age 11, was a tent dress which I made (unassisted) after drafting a pattern onto newspaper from a ‘bought’ tent dress. The dress wasn’t perfect, but I was very proud of my efforts! I continued to teach myself as well as learning dress making when I began high school. I’ve made many clothes over the years, for myself, my children, & more recently my grandchildren, along with loads of other types of sewing (curtains, cushion covers, gifts etc), & in more recent years I’ve developed a love for patchwork & quilting, & machine embroidery. These days I own at least 4 sewing machines including a beautiful singer featherweight, which often takes me way back to my very early sewing days!

My grandmother taught me to make tiny little Troll doll clothes when I was about 6 or 7 years old ( I’ll be 69 next week) of course it was all by hand. Then as I got older my aunt, one of grandma’s daughters, started me on the sewing machine. She had me making my own clothes before I even started high school, and told me to be sure to take sewing classes in HS . I’ve always loved sewing, I sewed for the public for many years ( helped a lot with the family income) as a stay at home mom. Now I mainly make baby quilts to give away. I only take sewing jobs if I want to 😊

I started sewing at 12. My mom is a fantastic sewer but she always worked and we did not have a lot of money. If she felt like she wanted a new skirt or blouse to wear the next day she would just make one the night before. I was a pretty active young boy who was hard on clothes so mom, tired of mending, finally said to me: "I'm going to show you how to repair the tear in your jeans you you can do it yourself from now on." I went from mending to full on garment construction and it is just something I have continued to do all through my adult life. In fact, since I retired from my adult life career I now work part-time as an educator in a sewing machine/quilt shop. 😊

I started when I was 12 and I'm 75 now. My Mother didn't sew, but she sent me to sewing classes. A lady in our town had a tiny fabric shop, and she gave lessons so that's who taught me. I learned a lot from her and sewed garments for many years. I remember making a red wool full-length coat with lining for myself - it was the most beautiful thing I made back then and I was so proud of it! I used to set my White machine up on our dining room table, and I laid out patterns on the living room floor. In the '80's I drifted away from garment sewing when my daughters were teenagers and didn't want to wear "homemade" clothes any more. I donated all my sewing supplies, machine included, until about 2013 or so when I got into quilting - so that led me to buy two new sewing machines and loads of fabric! I don't make garments anymore, but I sure do love quilts!

Like many, I learned to sew in home economics. My mother never learned to sew, and I don’t think her mother sewed either. My great grandmother sewed because I have her old pedal machine. I used to come home from school and make a skirt to wear when I would go out later that night. It drove my mother crazy because I would come home with a yard of fabric, a zipper and some thread and made a skirt in 1.5 hours, including the hem. After I graduated from college, I made my first quilt (queen-sized) with hand quilting, which I made for her. I even won first place for my quilt at the county fair! That was 60 years ago. Still stitching.

My Mom was a big time crafter, she sewed a lot! She let me help here and there, and it just organically developed my love for sewing. I sewed long before I made clothing because I laugh when my Sisters told me the teacher expected more from them because I set the bar so high!🤪
Home Economics was apparently hard for them…🧐♥️👍😂

I was 9. I made a skirt in my favorite color, blue 💙 because I didn't have one. I folded the top of the fabric down and put the elastic in. I then put the elastic in and hemmed it. I was so excited when I wore it to school the next day.

I had to earn a Girl Scout badge.
My neighbor worked at the local Singer store and had beginning sewing class.
I took it and my mother bought me a basic machine.
When my husband and I had our first apt he bought me a machine to make curtains and do repairs.
When our kids came along, sewed clothes and house things and more curtains
My daughter figure skated about 25 and I bought a serger to make skating outfits and helped to make costumes for the shows. Went through my fleece bathrobe and mitten phase.
I started quilting about 20 years ago, so I am still sewing!
    And making curtains.
It has provided me with hours of pleasure.
I have been sewing for about 60 years.

I started doing embroidery work when I was 5. I was always into my mother's sewing basket, so she started taking scrap muslin, drawing flowers on it and showed me how to do the stitches. Proabably not the prettiest stitiches. I started making Barbie clothes and had my first quilt made at the age of 12. Still quilting and sewing at the age of 57.

I was inBandthey didn't have a school uniform that fit me and told me it would take 2 years to get the uniform...guess who got a simplicity pattern and some fabric and made her uniform. Me!!!! In my 20's I worked at a major retailer. Couldn't afford the clothes so I would find a. Pattern and make a suit/outfit at night to wear the next day. I slowed down for a bit but picked up where I started during COVID. Haven't made clothes for me but crafts.

I made my wedding dress when I got married and sewed for my kids until they were in middle school where it was no longer “cool” to have handmade clothes. Then I started quilting. That was about 30 years ago and I no longer garment sew.

I started making doll clothes by hand when I was around 8 years old. My grandmother is the one who taught me to sew on a machine. When I was 11, I entered a city wide sewing contest. You had to be 15. We had to create a doll. I won!!! I have made clothes for myself ever since. I sewed clothes for my kids and grandkids. Home decor and did upholstery out of our home for several years. When my husband got out of the Navy, I made a pea coat and snow pants from his Navy blues for our son. I made my wedding dress and bridesmaid dress. So I guess I have been sewing for almost 70 years. Took up quilting when I retired. Love it and have so many things I want to make!! 😊✂️🧵🪡

I was in Junior High home ec in 1971. My mother had a black Singer, which I still have. I had to know what the stitch length was but there were no markings. My dad and I turned the knob all the way down and he notched it with a file. I apologize to all the antique purists but it is one of my fondest memories of my dad. Mary Rose

Lovely to read your beginning journey Laura, Thankyou. School holidays when I was just turned 9. As always wanted to have something to do and make. My aunt had been making skirts with me at weekends but She was working so
I took myself off to the haberdashery shop and found a pattern for a dress. Mum took me to the market and we bought some fabric. Cut it out sewed the dress by hand. Put in the zip. My lovely Dad decided talent should be encouraged and bought me a sewing machine. The rep came to the house and showed us a cheap model with plastic bits. Dad not impressed and I was given a machine which cost £39. That was 68 years ago. It made all my clothes and lots for my Mum Curtains pillows capes you name it. Now I am a quilter. My machine is still my dummy , comforter your side of the pond. First thing I would grab in a fire!

I can tell you a similar story with my great grandmother and crochet. I did take Sewing in Home Economics when I was in seventh grade. But I actually didn’t buy my own sewing machine and start sewing until 2 1/2 years ago when I retired. I cannot believe there’s so many things that I found out I needed after I learned to sew, lol

I did take a class in school, but was quite discouraged, so I didn't finish it. When my husband and I were getting married, he said, every wife should know how to sew, so he purchased a sewing machine for my wedding present. He then, sat down with me to help me understand the directions on the patterns. Then I took off from there. Its been 50 years now and still going strong sewing quilts, bags, anything.

When I was 8, my aunt taught me to embroider, and I did a tea towel with a lemon character on each end. I am 75 now, and I still have that tea towel. It was about the same time that she taught me how to sew on a machine. She was a farm wife in the Ozark Mountains, and she had a treadle machine. I loved working the treadle pedal.

I was one of 6 children, the middle of 5 sisters living in a township in South Africa. My mother was a dressmaker out of necessity. She made the most beautiful dresses, wedding and prom was her favourite. Only one sister took up sewing, and still does at the age of 69. I became a nurse and the only sewing I did was suturing skin. I moved to Australia in 2002. In 2020, at the age of 63, I decided to make a quilt for my grandbaby. Because of the pandemic, I was scared and I needed to do something for my mental health. I started hand sewing and hand quilting a story/photo/memory quilt. This quilt became bigger as the longer our harsh lockdowns continued. I eventually took the quilt to South Africa in 2022 when our borders opened and finished it there. It took me 2 years. 6 months later I started another memory quilt for my youngest child and I am busy now 18 months. I am in Croatia at the minute, with said son and I am nearly finished. I kept all his old Tshirts and hoodies and I hand sewed and hand quilted this queen sized reversible quilt of irregular blocks. I have made a film strip consisting of 44 photos as a large appliqué. All I need to do now is sew on this reel and sew on the two labels which are already printed. I think I need 2 weeks. Fortunately, because I’m hand sewing, I can sew wherever I am in the world. I am in Europe for another three months and I have brought with me material for my final two quilts for the other two children, and I will start with the centrepieces here. Hopefully I will take a maximum of 18 months for both 🙏🏽🙏🏽

Mine truly began watching my grandmother hand quilting. I did not start quilting until about 57 as I was talking to my daughter about wanting to learn to quilt/sew at about age 5. My mom had no interest in quilts but made my clothes. She did not have patience to teach me.
I did try yo make my daughter’s clothes in my mid thirties and that was a disaster. A good friend of mine at work made burp cloth for my first granddaughter right before she was born. I decided then that if she could make them, I could too, While searching UA-cam videos, I found Ginny Doan at Missouri star making baby blankets and the rest is history. I am a work in progress. Still so much to learn and skills to develop. I am now 67. Never too late to start.
