I love this lens so much. It’s the close focus that really excites me, it’s fantastic! I have an XT3 so no ibis, but rarely shoot video. I was worried about the aperture ring, but it’s amazing how quickly you get used to it. I normally use primes exclusively, but I’m really enjoying the versatility with this little fella. Love your review and completely agree.
How do you change aperture? Have you assigned any dial for the same?

@@SamGrimes93 can't speak for them, but an X-T5 with Sigma should get you the same depth of field as the Nikon combo but more megapixels and about a half pound lighter.
Same here, had this lens with my Sony ZV-E10 and absolutely loved it. Luckily I was able to return it when I pre-ordered the XT5, so now I can bring my favorite lens along with me. I’m still gonna test out the Fuji 16-55 just to see what that aperture ring is all about, but I image that I’ll be going back to the Sigma 18-50 when all is said and done.
@@jamese4729 That's definitely my draw to it. The Sigma is ridiculously tiny. Not sure if there's anything else like it. I've been using the Tamron 17-70. While the weight doesn't bother me too much, there's been plenty of times I wish I had something more discreet and just smaller in general when space is tight..
The main attraction for me with this lens for this price is fixed aperture and hopefully sharper than the Fuji 18-50 2.8 kit lens. I got rid of two Fuji 18-55 2.8 because the images appeared smudgy and didn't sharpen up to f5.6. I also have the Fuji 16-80 f4 which is a good lens but a bit chunky and a Fuji 15-45 which is sharp as hell and extremely light weight, but the power zoom sucks. If Sigma would come out with a lens like that without power zoom I'd grab it. By the way I recently purchased the Sigma 56 1.4 which turned out to be a much better and fun lens than the Fuji 56 1.2 that I got rid of last year.
i was so surprised with the 15-45. at first, before using it, i really hated it because they made it power zoom, when they already have the 16-50 manual zoom.
but then i used it, and i was blown away with the image quality. it's got an XF level quality optics, but with XC size and weight.
the power zoom, still not a super fan. it can get slow, it's not accurate, it even sometimes glitches... but i guess, the best way to use the 15-45 is to use it as a 15mm wide semi-pancake prime
@@riverpb5250 Yep, that was my experience. A 16-50 came with my X-T20 then I purchased a couple of 18-55 which I was not happy with. I paid around $200 for the 15-45 and it took much better pictures. So I just keep it in my bag, it's light enough. The 27mm 2.8 stays on the camera.
Hi! What makes the Sigma 56 1.4 a “much better and fun lens” over the Fuji 56 1.2 to you? I’m torn between the two and still deep in research. But I’d love to hear the thoughts of someone who’s had experience handling both. Thanks 😊
May i ask why you werent happy with the 18-55? I was thinking of getting that as my first fuji lens since it seems to cover more focal lengths with a better aperture than the 15-45@@mr.b4444

Looks like a great lens. I had a similarly specked Sigma lens for my first dslr Canon 7D, and it always encouraged me to take great photos.
Not missing aperture ring if you plan on parking the lens at f/2.8. Awesome point!
I got impressed on how good is the autofocus of the "old" x-t3
I'd loved to see if the lens is capable of resolving 40 MP without showing obvious negative effects (not escalating pixel peeping but taking a look if there is something noticable compared to "approved" Fuji lenses).
It doesn't work like that. The lens won't look worse on a higher MP body, it will most likely look better. Just maybe not supreme to bring out the most of 40 MP. But it could.
Love love love Sigma lenses. I use them pretty much exclusively on my Sony bodies. Images/video have such a warm, natural, organic look to them.
One thing I've found with sigma lenses is that they have the signature yellow cast when the scenes were "right", and I know many people say they don't see it but I think this lens has it too. I think the 16/30/56 f1.4 trio are some of the lucky exceptions.
56 1.4 is my favorite Fuji x lens so far
Hopefully, Fuji will re-engineer the venerable 18-55, specifically in the areas of WR and a constant aperture (and numbered ring), I love this lens. While I have a decent arsenal of Fuji glass, the 18-55 is often my ‘go-to’ lens for travel and street. Sigmas and most 3rd parties, honestly never impressed me, going back to the ‘80s’.
If Fuji did that, the price jump and the size jump would be huge. It's more likely that they'll give it the 10-24 treatment (the same optic, added WR).
I hope Sigma release an 18-35 1.8 in Fuji as well 🤞🏻

This was one of the lenses I was considering when I was switching systems and thinking of going with Fuji (even though it wasn't released yet). I ended up with a Nikon Z6 and 24-70 f/4 and am very happy with my choice, but this would be a great option for anyone who wants great image quality in a small size.
I was waiting for the rumor to become true before investing in Fuji. If everything else is right I don't care too much about the aperture wheel and this is a good option for me to keep on the camera all the time.
It's alright, for the price it's decent.
I just wish more 3rd party manufacturers follow Viltrox's steps when designing a lens for the Fuji system. "Simply" adding an aperture ring will make your lens at least 100% more appealing to Fuji users.

Hi Omar, I always love what you do. I'm letting you know that a photographer was badly beaten up at gunpoint by two thugs in San Francisco. This was covered on the news and two UA-camrs have started a challenge to bring awareness to this issue regarding safety, and I think that you would be perfect to do something like this on your channel. The two UA-camrs are Amar from 247 Media and Vahagraphy. This is as you know extremely important and threatens all of us
I'm really sorry about this or any violence. I've lived in the SF area for over 40 years and have visited SF countless times. I worked in SF in the late 70s and early 80s in downtown. There is no doubt that SF has gone downhill with open drug dealing and homeless camps. If I listed the issues about SF today I wouldn't include anything particular to a single photographer getting beaten up. Are you suggesting that Omar bring attention to the risks to photographers in SF?
@@emmgeevideo Well I wanted to bring attention to not just SF, but the dangers as a whole and ways to combat them because a lot of individuals take this for granted, especially people living in suburban areas.

@@emmgeevideo No disrespect taken, but this is exactly what I'm talking about, it's way more than one mugging and it's happening everywhere, and people are acting like it isn't happening at all, but I would advise you to start checking for yourself. We have a crime problem with stolen cars, and a lot of other crimes that is being talked about.
These thefts and beatings on photographers are on people whose job is to be outside to actually do their jobs. Take this away, take their art and voice away and what do they have. My point is don't wait for it to happen to someone you know or even you to bring awareness to it. Once you have given the education it is up to the individuals to prepare themselves.
Your example of one mugging, and no disrespect to you, shows that there is no awareness of this issue as if it doesn't exist. The numbers are on the rise, but if a photographer takes action and turns the table on the robber then there will be awareness and that photographer will have to go through hell to prove their innocents.

I think I will go for this one and get rid of some of my lenses like the kit lens 18-55 f2.8-4.0 and the 30 f2. I would keep the Sigma 56 f1.4. So I will go 3rd party on my x-s10.

It’s august 2024 and I’ve been rocking the xtt20 and xt3 for years. Trying out the xt50 and wondering if that Sigma would be a good match since my kit, primes, 16-50f4 etc are all not quite there for the all-in-one. Wanted a fixed aperture 2.8 light zoom, not my 16-55 or 16-50. This video is EXACTLY what i needed and was speaking to the future (current) version of me when it was released. Hoping the ibis kills my need for an OIS video lense

What do you sugest between xt4 / 16-80mm lens and xt4 / 18-55 lens combo. I am more like a photograpy person but sometimes takes photo
I'm unexpectedly torn.
I've been thinking about this lens for a year. Before Sigma came to Fuji, I kept thinking "this is the only f/2.8 zoom to tempt me, because it's so small." Then Sigma brought over the primes, and I knew--I'm getting the 18-50 as soon as it's out. Now it's available for preorder, and I'm having a moment of indecision.
I think a lot of it is that I switched cameras. Upgraded from exclusively manual lenses on my X-E2 to an X-Pro3 with the 35/2 WR. Maybe I don't need this, and might be better served by just getting the Sigma 56/1.4 or a used Fuji 56/1.2. Sigmas are on sale right now (although they're often on sale), and used 56s are affordable now that the WR version is out. Maybe I'd pick up a wide AF lens down the road (14/2.6, 16/2.8, and 18/2 are all tempting), but I already have 12mm and 17mm manual lenses.
More to think about.
You remind me of myself, there are so many options, and so hard to choose. I have bought, sold, traded lenses and cameras so many times in the short time I’ve been in the hobby, but I’ve been learning to embrace “good enough”. No lens will be perfect for every situation. I have always enjoyed primes because they make such a beautiful image, but then I end up always feeling like I want to try other focal lengths. When I’m on the street taking photos, sometimes there are detail shots high up, or a scene happening across the street I can’t get to fast enough, and that’s where the zooms become worth their weight in gold.
The fact that this sigma gives you that flexibility, 2.8 aperture and a sub 300g weight is amazing. Probably. Going to be the lens welded to my camera for travel in cities with the 10-24 as a backup in case I want some REALLY wide shots. For hikes, it’ll be the 10-24 and a XC50-230 in case I want some landscape details.
That works for me, but if you do mostly studio work for example, portraits, lots is specifically low light work, then primes are usually the way to go with APSC IMO.
@@Kevodabomb_Media what I went with in the end was the Tamron 18-300. A lot more trade-offs, heavy for one lens (comparable to two), but decent IQ, reasonable weather resistance, and an utterly amazing zoom range for APS-C. Mostly I go walking with a prime, but whenever I want that 300mm reach, I don't have to swap lenses if I want to shoot something wider. Seems like the right zoom lens for me.
I still think the Sigma has a lot of merit, the only standard zoom I'd consider, but I guess I'm just a prime kind of guy for anything under 100mm.
@@thebitterfig9903 nice! I’ve considered that tamron as well as the 18-135, and 18-120PZ for travel. Sure they are heavier but you basically never have to switch lenses unless you’re in very low light. I’m still trying to figure this out myself 😂
I ended up canceling my Sigma order, I remember not being super excited about my 18-55 zoom, figured I should try something else.

Definitely more versatile, but bigger.
It is a great lens, sharp as even with my H2. So small so light. Excellent with the xs20 i should imagine.
Christopher Frost tested the Sigma on the 40mp X-H2 and said it holds up in resolution.
How about Tamron 17-70mm? It seems that not many Fuji users have talked about that Lena.
I have it and have used it on the XT30 and XT5. It is weather sealed, big but sharp and it has a great range. Having said, I am considering buying the Sigma for street and multi-day hiking.
I find this lens is great for video, especially in controlled sessions. But for some reason for me in high contrast scenes, for stills, things can get muddy. In overcast days itnoerforms well, but in the sun where some areas are overexposed and others underexposed, i prefer the primes.
Just got this little 18-50mm in pristine condition for 350 euros on the used market. I'm stunned by the image quality in such a small and lightweight package! It fits perfectly in my old X-T100. I really like shooting with primes but for me it's important to have flexibility, so I'm pretty sure it will live in my camera body haha.
During my first tests, AF was acting a bit weird, though. Slower than normal and locking focus (with the green squares and all) while the image was not really focused at all. I realized that the previous ower had not updated the firmware to the 1.10 version. Did it last night but didn't have the chance to shoot again after that. Let's see.
Update: it was the X-T100. The poor processor couldn't handle zone AF 😂

Omar, it would be great to make a video with those "clinically sharp lenses" vs those with character for Fuji X mount. That would be a great video because you can share your thoughts and compare photos, colors, and other details. Great video about the Sigma 18-50 lens too. It's very good for street photography!
I'm tempted. I love my 35mm F2, 50mm F2 and 27mm 2.8, but having a convenient zoom for travel and street that's small and 2.8... seems hard to resist at that price.

Dude! The 16-50mm is discontinued as far as I know, the new kit lens for cheaper bodys is the 15-45mm. Also: you forgot to mention the Tamron 17-70mm f2.8. I have that one and its fantastic! Very sharp, weather sealed, quite a bit less weighty than the 16-55mm f2.8 and it even has OIS ! :)
The point of this lens is that it’s smaller than the tamron 17-70mm

Sigma lenses are impressive I have to say, I didn't expect it to be that good but after watching one of your reviews on the lens you did a while ago I decided to go for it - good thing I did because I haven't stopped using it since then :))

How is the lens for distortion and vignetting? A lot of Fuji folks take jpegs which means we either need in camera corrections to work (not typically the case for 3rd party lenses) or for the lens to already be well corrected.

Aperture rings of my 16mm 1.4 and 56 1.2 sometimes annoy me because I change the aperture by accident.
my goal is to to have a one camera one lens gear kit. film is so much more fun with less gear.
I have the 16mm f/2.8, which I love on my X-T5 and was considering the 35mm f/2 to make a decent, lightweight travel combo. Seeing this lens however makes me wonder whether the pairing of the 16mm and 18-50mm would be even better. This would mainly be for landscapes, cityscapes and the occasional portrait. Did you find the Sigma at 35mm to be as good as the 35mm Fuji prime?

I have this lens for Fuji and Sony, and one thing that's irritating me is that the Fuji version loses focus whenever I zoom. I thought it was something wrong with my copy but in this video I can see that yours also lose focus when you zoom. It's even effects stills because the camera has to find focus again every time I zoom. Wasn't that something you reacted to? It's surely drives me crazy.

Hard plastic. Metal mount. Pretty typical in this price point.
hi, I'm about to buy a fuji XS-10 and I'm in doubt whether to buy the fujifilm kit lens (18-55 f2.8-f4 or 16-80 f4) or this Sigma f2.8. My use will be both for photography and videos in particular landscapes, architecture, streephotos even nocturnes so the idea was to have a versatile lens eventually combined with a prime. I'm not a professional, but I'd like to get the best result and quality. What would you suggest me to purchase? Sigma? the 2 above-mentioned fuji lens? I'd be pleased to have your advice. How does it feel to manually focus with this lens?
I currently have a Fuji XT200 with the 15-45 f3.5-5.6 kit lens. Is it worth upgrading to the Sigma 18-50 even if the focal lengths are pretty close? Been using it for 4 years now for mostly travel and street photography. I want to try a lens that’s not variable aperture.

Hi. how is the quality on 27mm? Is it better than xf 27/2.8? Fujinon 27/2.8 has no CA, it's outstandingly good at 5.6...
I throw it in, let’s see if it catches any attention ;) Wouldn’t it be great if the focusing ring could be programmed to control the aperture? So you could have the best of both worlds: an aperture ring when needed and a compact clean design. What’s your opinion about this?
That's an interesting thought. You might be able to tell the camera to open or close the aperture but you won't be able to give it an exact number. Don't know if the camera expects that from the lens
Would this lens be good for eventphotography? I am looking for a lens that is overal good and doesn't quite break the bank as I am just starting out with shooting some events. At the moment I'm quite limited with my 35mm prime.

Can't speak for Omar, but I think it ultimately comes down to size & reach vs OIS (Tamron calls it VC). I've got the Tamron and have absolutely no complaints about image quality and performance. However it's much bigger and weighs almost twice as much as the Sigma 18-50. For me, if you're an event photographer, the Tamron is hard to beat with the reach and IS (useful for video as well). For street, I'd take the Sigma 18-50.

So this or the XF 16-55 if i dont care about size or weight...price wise this is 600 bucks cheaper....
I'd guess the ois of the XF outplays the half stop aperture advantage of the sigma at 50mm. Would have been interesting to see how they compare wide open at the long end for portrait. That's the only scenario where they might really differ...
The Sigma has a full stop advantage at 50mm though? Plus, OIS can only outplay it in e.g. landscape scenarios. As soon as a subject moves or you want a brighter aperture for shallower DOF, OIS is useless.
what do u think about it versus the tamron 17-70? cheaper and lighter compare to a range to 70?

I have a 16-80 f4 on my X-T5, and had been recommended to go for the 16-55 f2.8 for better quality pictures, and low light capabilities, and the lens has been described as a "bag full of primes". But it is weighty. Do you think it makes sense to go for the Sigma 18-50 as an upgrade to my 16-80, or is the image quality worse than the Fuji? Or get the Sigma, and keep the Fuji 16-80 (but the overlap seems so big?)
This lens is like a child between the 27mm 2.8 and the kit lens.
Thanks for the video Omar. I absolutely love the Sigma lenses for the Fuji X system. I have the 30 and 16 - this may be next because of its versatility. Love that minimum focus distance too.

The Fuji 18-55 just got a new firmware update. They say it improves image quality. I’m not sure how.
On the H2 the 18mm-55mm image quality is pretty good. I recently messed around with it in a studio setting and photos are sharp with nice color and contrast.
