    Deciding whether or not to go into medicine is one of the most important decisions you will make as a college student. Choosing a specialty is one of the most important decisions you will make in medical school. The best way in determining a good specialty fit for you is 1) knowing your strengths, likes, and dislikes and 2) getting your hands dirty and working side by side with attending physicians.

    I ended up deciding on plastic surgery because, and its going to sound weird, but because of my love for sculpting. As a hobby i love ceramics and creating huge pieces like heads and bodies and things like that and for some reason i feel like that love for scultping comes out when im studying plastic surgery. 🤷🏿‍♀️ who woulda thought lol

      Picking a specialty is a long way off for me, but I'm pretty sure I will specialize in surgery! I'm toying with the idea of cardiothoracic or orthopedic, but your descriptions of plastic surgery explained things i had no idea about! I may be adding that to my list :)

    This is a great video! Thank you for sharing your story, it was insightful. I’m still in undergrad and I would like to become a plastic surgeon. I really love how plastic surgeons are like masters of the human anatomy and get to use a lot of creativity in most of their procedures. Just like me I see that you put a lot of creativity and time into your UA-cam videos. It shows that you pay attention to details and care about design, those are already some good traits, so I know you’ll be a great plastic surgeon!

    Thank you for this video! I was at a toss. I appreciate it so much because I've been perplexed with whether I should go into Pathology as a tech or work for a Plastic Surgeon and I thought plastics would be unfulfilling and superficial at first too, but discovered it goes deeper than that for other people and transforms their lives.

    I just finished my first year of college and I'm transferring into nursing school this fall. A week before the year started I had a flare up of my Crohn's disease and ultimately arrived to college late. The whole first semester I would go back and forth between being sick and being okay and being sick again. It go so bad at one point where I thought I had to drop out and move back home 3 hours away. Luckily, I got better after my health hit rock bottom and got through midterms as well as the rest of the semester. After that period I started questioning my psychology major and what I wanted to do after school. I started thinking about nursing and being able to help patients like the how the nurses helped me the few weeks before college and as a kid when I was first diagnosed. I also thought that I would be left in a better position after 4 years with a BSN instead of an undergraduate psychology degree. Ultimately, I decided on applying to nursing schools over winter break and got accepted during the spring and now I start in just under two weeks. I'm not sure if I would want to work on a GI floor as a nurse later down the line or not, but nevertheless I'm happy with my decision and it was nice to find someone who made their decision on healthcare due to having Crohn's disease as well.

However during my rotations like you said i fell in love with plastic surgery seeing the variety of surgeries that a plastic surgeon can do. I was inspired by the free flaps and with ostoplastic reconstruction of fingers. I was just in awe of the fact that this surgeon is creating a new finger with tissue from groin etc. never looked back since

    Thanks for sharing you background and experience! I also love Comp Sci and majored in physics before medical school (I attend a Canadian med school). I think reconstructive plastic surgery is amazing, but I've also recently learned a lot about Otolaryngology and especially the oncology/reconstructive side of it. From your experience, would most facial and plastic reconstructive surgeons have a plastics background or ENT? Or would this just be some fine line that depends on the hospital you're in?
    Thanks again for all your videos, they're a big motivation for me getting through this immunology block right now lol

    • @kevinjubbalmd
      @kevinjubbalmd  6 років тому +2

      Thanks for watching B Power. Initially plastics was doing most of the facial reconstructions after ENT/Otolaryngology was doing cancer resections. Now ENT is handling more and more flaps on their own. If it's cancer below the skin, ENT is going to resect, and more commonly they are reconstructing. Other facial trauma, scalp/face reconstruction, mandible fractures are often handled by plastic surgery (but certain aspects are handled by ENT as well).
      I would recommend that you shadow both ENT and plastic surgeons to figure out which would be a better fit for you.

    Hi, Dr. Jubbal!
    I'm currently a 500L Medical Student, studying in Nigeria.
    I love drawing and working with my hands in my free time
    That's why I've recently begun to gravitate towards Reconstructive surgery in particular within the plastic surgery field.
    Basically, drawing is what I love doing in my free time, and all through my free time in secondary school (aka high school in the US) what I did was to use cartons to construct toys and innovations that were coming to my mind.
    But based on my parents advice, I gained admission to study Medicine instead of Engineering.
    Pls what can I do within this time as I'm due to graduate from Medical School next year (June 2023) to know if plastic surgery would be good for me.

      Med. school is the relatively easy part. It's tedious but not especially difficult and can be a lot of fun. Internship and residency are more challenging in their own ways. Fellowship is quite different. Practicing AND keeping up are harder and continue for the remainder of your career.

    Hey Dr Jubbal! Thanks for the great and insightful video! Just wondering, could you share with us about your experience during your Orthopaedic medicine rotation you briefly mentioned? I'm a 1st year medical student who aspires to be an orthopaedic surgeon (just like you initially aspiring to be a Paediatric Gastroenterologist), and I was wondering if it would be the right fit for me.
    Thank you so much! Cheers

      Orthopedic surgery is great but it's quite crude. I like the meticulousness and precision of plastic surgery. It fits my personality more. Orthopedics was fun and I could see myself doing it, but ultimately plastics had a much stronger draw for me.

    • @wholeNwon
      @wholeNwon 6 років тому +1

      I went to a school that was world-famous for producing great orthopedic surgeons. The professors were outstanding but the first time I participated in an amputation and sawed through a patient's bones, I was pretty sure it wasn't for me. You will learn what you yourself find appealing.

      Crohn’s. I spoke about it at length in “My Name is Kevin Jubbal” video

      aha, I will watch that video then! i've got a pretty viscous case of IBS myself. it's amazing what they know today, versus when i was a younger person struggling with it (decades ago). the quantity and function of serotonin in the gut, how more fiber doesn't necessarily help/work for everyone, new drugs on the market for..
      Thanks for responding to my Q Doc!

      It's difficult but not impossible. I know a resident who did. Excellent board scores, research prowess, and knowing the right people all help.
