Rob We run 3 commercially. The amount of work they have done without issue is outstanding. Used for over 30 hours / week on rough unforgiving commercial sites as well as high end domestic jobs. We used to use Husqvarna LB 553 but no collection and front wheel drive so have to push on inclines and snapped drive cables frequently along with wheel bearing failure. If there was an award for the best mower in the world the HRX 537 would win without doubt. This from a contractor who has been in the trade over 40 years and has used probably every make and type of mower available.
I would agree it is a great mower and my early experience meant like you I wore the wheels off it. However my recent two have developed the same fault at a little over two seasons. The drive slows down at the start of the day to a crawl no matter what setting it is on. It then appear to warm up the hydraulic oil and the speed creeps back up. This gets worse over time. Getting the rear axle off is an absolute pain, like most modern engineering there is little thought to maintenance access so you have to take the whole mower apart to get to drain and refill the hydraulic fluid ( note that Honda do not list this as a maintenance part ). When my first one did this I thought it was low on fluid, either under filled from the factory, or had leaked. But there was no visible leaks around the axle seals. Having a second one do the same at about the same hours I'm now suspecting the quality/longevity of the oil used. So Honda put in a drain plug in the housing or go back to using the oil you had five years back. Don't let the climate evangelists stop you from making the "Dream" mower us gardeners want and need.
Hrx537 is a great solid mower and cuts lovely but a bit heavy, 21 inch izy is nearly half the price, lighter and easier to manoeuvre but wont cut as short. I find the stihl mowers better in the wet. Its good to have a choice !
Hi Rob. I seeing a few American folk talk about coating the undersides of lawn mower decks with Slip Plate. It’s a granite dry lubricant u paint on. The deck has to be clean before u coat it. They say it stops grass from sticking to the deck and helps in cutting wet grass.
Can’t believe Honda haven’t given you a new one yet Rob! 14 months with my HRX537. Mine is the smart drive model. The cut is good for a multifunction mower, the collection is good too. The weight with the composite deck is excellent for a 21” mower, the handles fold quick and easy which comes in handy when needing extra space in the van and the HRXs cherry on the top is its ability to mulch at the flip of a lever…and with the bag on😉 The drive however, I’d have to disagree with….even with the smart drive turned up to max, once on an incline or thick grass I find it to be weak and slow to drive and the wheels feel as though they belong on a kids toy. It’s such a shame as the engine is great and the functions are excellent. Maybe it is a smart drive issue as I’ve heard others complain about the smart drive models. For me it’s the best mower…almost.
I got this mower off the back of your advice last year! 1 year in and it is amazing! My favourite feature is raising the the cut height to 100mm, which makes the first cuts and lawns that are overgrown effortless. My old one was 70mm and the 30mm makes a huge difference.
I have never used Honda mower before. I mostly use stihl German technology they say it is the best in the market who am I to deny. Thank you for sharing good job as usual 🤝
we've gotten 5 seasons out of our one and by the looks of it, it will last another 2-3 seasons. Also it gets put through a lot of heavy use and we only service it once a year
In my opinion Weibang SVP50 with the high lift blade is a better mower, it’s fast, bags very well, goes through almost anything and leaves a great finish plus has side discharge which can be useful. I’ve run a couple of 537’s in the past, one was decent other was a Friday build! Good advice on keeping airflow going though the bag in the wet. I use a hard handbrush during the day to brush the inside of the catcher to keep it as unclogged as poss and deck checked after every mow. Great post Rob.
Oh there definitely one of the best mate. My colleague uses an old hr174 i believe and they are so good. Metal grass flap. Drive is solid and can be easily fixed with a dog clutch for 40 quid oem. I love the solid gear boxes just so easy to look after 👌👍
We had a couple of the 476’s. Always in for repair and would end up going pretty slow. And the chain would easily come off. Thats said I guess it depends on how much you mow.
Another superb video Rob for some reason I couldn't comment independently on your video so I apologise for using someone else's comment to reply take good care of yourselves won't you buddy
yes for reliabilty you cant beat honda mowers. I dont do much mowing but use a HRH 536 roller (very heavy but reliable) + a Honda HRS 536 Mulching Mower (very quick)
@@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices.I guess you know to always srtim edges fist as mower picks up strimmimgs .I'm been on this since 2007 so learn over time little things .
Personally I never got used to the weight of these. Everything about them is absolutely solid, but my gawd I've used steel-decked mowers that are lighter😅
I would really think about coming out the mowing and into the treatments, after the budget I’m sure the treatments will be the first thing people will cancel and keep the cutters cutting 😊
Hi Rob, hope all is well. Suggestion on recording your mileage on the mower - you could record it on the Strava app but instead of trainers used, input your mower. 💪🏻👍🏻
Theres no such thing as the perfect mower Rob , but I think the Honda HRX comes close. I run two of them in a mowing only business. Mine get bashed around a bit and have only had to replace rear wheels and the occasional front hight adjuster arm. That versa mow system makes spring bagging so much easier.
Brought one 3years ago, took it back within couple months, the smart drive was crap and it didn't leave a very good cut. For over a grand i wanted better. Brought a basic husqvarna for less the half the price and it was way better, especially for longer grass. Honda engine are very good though.
You do realise that if you ask fifty gardeners what's the best mower, strimmer, blower, hedge cutter etc. They'll all answer the same way.... . " mine is the best" whatever it is they use.
Hey Rob, Been watching a while now but only comment on occasion. I'm gonna attempt to pick your experienced brain, on something I'm dealing with and see what you think. I cut a lawn at the moment and the customer is very nice, however, they have a dog and aren't great at cleaning up after it. And by that I mean, they never clean up after it. I don't mind it that much, accept I'm going to upgrade my mower next season and I'm concerned that maybe dried dog business, might be damaging the blade/s. Just to be clear. The customer is very nice, pays on time and I haven't asked them to clean up. However, as I say, I'm upgrading next year and I'm not sure, I want an expensive mower driving over dog mess. ( I do think it might make the grass grow more though. *Apparently it doesn't and is actually bad for the grass and environment). I'd appreciate your thoughts on it

Agree with everything you say.
Needs to be for £1300 wow. Glad its lasted you and i supose if tour mainly just cutting lawns you can put the capital into the machine.
Invest to save.
Cracking mowers mate, let down by not enough proper blade options (high lift/mulching) imo, still worth it though. 👍
Totally agree, all the best.

i use izy 18 inch perfect as have to lift it up some steps and over low walls cut great

Ask them to clean the lawn before you attend.
If they don’t , get rid.
@@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices Thanks Rob
You could have a step count on phone or a gadget just for step count.
Then convert the steps in miles
Thanks.
If I'm doing half a day's mowing, around 8 small- medium lawns then it works out around 10k steps for me, around 5km
my issue is the weight 45kg up steps is no fun.
A fair point.
are you buying a spare before they go out of production ?
Not sure. 🤔
Put prices so I'm not ready for battery tools
Not sure what you mean?
Come on then rob what is the best way to clean the bag any tips would be appreciated 👍
Hot soapy water . Then dry it out in the sun. ☀️
Could have got a stihl mower 445
Not for me.
Rob could you use a pedometer to track your mower’s distance.
Thanks
Na, it's only got 6 cutting heights
Come on rob battery gear.
Too expensive.

It's not secret when the customer walks grass indoors
They should take their shoes off and wear slippers indoors
