I've been playing for well over 40 hours, and I still don't pilot my damn ship. You can definitely become powerful enough for it to not be necessary, especially if you put up with the logistical challenges of fielding a larger fleet.
I've been playing 800 hours according to Steam, while Starsector was added to my Steam account. I have played like 750 of that not piloting (as in I only put my character as a captain of a support ship and sit out fights entirely). I needed most of the remaining 50 hours to figure out ONE build that I actually enjoy piloting and don't actually suck in. Go figure.
Despite some of it's flaws, I like Unofficial Discord server. And btw 58:39 was my humble contribution to it so I'm glad it lives on. I made it on inspiration of "eight bears" from MTG community (tho there's clearly 9 reapers on picture).
Are there more than 1 discord? I don't want to get on the woke toxic one with the dictator mods banning a youtube creator for making a joke about a mod. Is there an alternative?

59:46 videogames definetly - java was made to work everywhere identically but it has to get interpeded everywhere to do that. that means you can theoretically run java games anywere but most graphical libraries do depend on system the game is on, meaning you still have to change some stuff and recopile it to make it look the same. Basically java was made to make platform independent code sacrifising mostly performance meaning games would run slower generally, but the difference is not highly significant for most part. Notably good coding and optimisation does wonders regardless of language so don't blame java first, blame lack of optimisation tldr - java is not a best choice for games because it was never meant to do them.
You ever take a hard math class? I recall doing third demntional '3d' problems and taking the equation '4d' for a moment to simplify it and eventually you convert your final answer to '3d'. Ghost ships you pick up are definitely 'real'. Why they bother going '3d' at all to travel through the core worlds is beyond me

I let the AI fly my smaller ships, as they're too slippery for me, so I can't take advantage of some wild tactics involving tiny ships. Capital ships I manually control, because they're so fat you have to be terrible to lose control of them.

There is a certain group of people that have power on the forums and discord and they have the ear of Alex, also final say how the game will change in upcoming patches while us normal folk can play something else... TLDR: Once seen cannot be unseen.
Starsector is cool but vanilla gets boring fast. Mod scene WAS good with factions and ships that felt balanced, but feels like last 3-4 years or so have just seen such stupid powercreep that nothing is balanced against vanilla anymore. I think people saw the Zig get put into the main game and figured that was approval to start making the stupidest shit possible. Everyone wants their snowflake faction or insanely OP discounted hullmod / weapon that allow you to stack 5x the firepower and 5x the speed onto their snowflake brand of ships. All the better to enter a random sector outside the core and get jumped by their snowflake version of Redacted or whatever other bs they have cooked up as a boss, complete with omega-tier AI in it's omega-tier ship that blinks around at 5x the speed while entering Super Sayian 5 and going immune to damage for the next 5 minutes while blowing up whatever is left of your fleet. Incredibly satisfying utter waste of time. Any mod that specs a single value outside of vanilla balance should come with a "MASSIVE WASTE OF TIME" warning on it when loading, because so much as attempting to assemble and curate a modpack these days makes it nigh impossible to play with anything made since 2020.
i...kind of agree but that is the nature of mods now in this community, we praise the UAF or another other worldly mods. there are some that tries to mimic the vanilla style but it ends up un-popular to everyone dismay. and yes i think the same recipe is being used over and over without any new spice, fastening the burn out phase. but ultimately mods are a choice.

Let me know if you know about the "handhold" version of TNP as that also helps "fix" things, to be frank... Have you tried to ask this very thing on the officially forums or discord? I'm guessing you got banned instantly for it.
