I was with friends on a road trip from San Diego to Las Vegas early 90’s and my friend (like an idiot) took the car off roading and drove over some cactus which punctured the tires a half mile from Amboy. We made it there, but was stuck… good ole Buster who ran the place before he died helped us out.
Back in the 1980s I was working on the 29 Palms Marine Base. At that time Buster still owned the place, and Roys Cafe was still operating as a dinner and gas station. The rest of the crew and I stayed at the motel which while not in full operation was still available. I have to say, I still think of it like that.
Been there in 1990. We ran out of gas as well and arrived 5 minutes after the gasstation closed, so had to spend the night there in our RV, until the station opened again. Filled the RV up in the morning, and had breakfast there. We weren't even aware that Amboy existed but were very grateful it did. 😅Great experience. 😁
There’s a sign inside that says “sorry no kitchen”.
Watched a lot of these reports on Route 66. This one is pretty good, one of the best. Well organized and fun to follow.
Very nice job on production thanks for the credit -LCM Productions
Was stationed out at 29 stumps and used to drive through here on the way to Vegas. Thinking back on it now that's a crazy drive to be doing in the middle of the night.
Nice video thank you. Back in the 1970s was driving through Amboy as we normally did this going to the Colorado river. Well, the friend of mine I was driving with stopped to make a phone call. We went into the phone booth and there's no dial on the phone. yes, that was the time they still had dials on phone. You looked up to the right and there was a box with a crank like 1930s and you crank that and the operator came on the phone. The really hysterical part is that my friend was trying to make a call with a credit card. You can imagine how that went.
that's a standard price in Australia.....actually on the cheap side most of the time! I loved Amboy when we stopped there in 2018
It makes sense that someone from Australia, home of the world's biggest Outback, would enjoy visiting Amboy.
@@xxxYYZxxx haha just saw this...yep i loved it!!!
I was there 3 days ago. Gas is over $7 now lol
love it love it love i that place, amazing destination
It’s kinda more popular now but I remember going by in the late 90s as a kid on my way to the east coast with family and it literally gave me the shivers....it was just dead....like the twilight zone....now it’s more lively. Back then it was told to not do that at night. If you leave LA early morning you’ll hit Las Vegas that route fine during the day.
i love ghost towns
@@webguy943 Calico is another one
Great video. Thanks for posting.
The town has got a very interesting history indeed.
You forgot to talk about the dirt runway behind the gas station there planes land and they fill up their tanks at the pumps sometimes. They will drive their airplanes around to the front of the motel see some frightened motorist as these small planes maneuver around cars. I have seen some videos of airplanes taking off and landing right on Route 66 also instead of using the runway.
planning to stop by on this town this spring.
Always make sure I stop there when I sneak by on the old 66
Wish I could come with you
Amboy reminds me of the fictional town in The Dying Room. Great flick. Nice video. Thank you.
Was there last Thursday on my way to Route 66 bike week.
Amboy was featured prominently in a popular early 1990’s Vampire Book series among many other things like multiple horror and biker movies s over the years…
They drive to the nearby highway Café and they find a bus with seven passengers waiting for the reopening of a snowed in bridge. However the driver says that he had only six passengers when he parked the bus. While interrogating the travelers, weird things happen in the diner, with the lights switching on and off and the turntable turning on and off.
It happened to us three years ago (2019) Amboy was a stroke of luck !!!!
2:51 briefly
Anyone else here after researching the HERO video ?
I meant Manny years ago really nice guy
you must stop here. i did in 2018 and i think the population there was 6
I think Cars radiator springs was based off this town
Or maybe Selegman, Arizona.
Wie gerne würde ich dort leben.
Can you charge up your EV in Amboy or do you need a very long extension cord?
is Gabby ok?
There is worse places to be stranded in ... also only dorks run out of gas in the middle of the desert
If you get lost, and they don't have many signs. It's the government officials that are the dorks.
As someone who lived in 29 I would stay clear of Amboy. This video mentioned nothing about the bad side of this town. Never be here at night and travel in a group during the day.
why?
I worked there and I can vouch there isn't nothing creepy there except how dark it gets
You lived in the year 1929? Or you lived in the hotel room #29?
@@rvnewby1455 there’s another town nearby called 29 Palms
This is the ONLY side of town.
Not only is he out of gas, but he's also got the check engine light on. Geez
You people don’t even know about amboy lolll.
Before you start screaming "Highway Robbery!" about paying $5.50/gallon, gas is the same price in parts of L.A., and maybe $1/gal less everywhere else in CA.
And maybe $1/gal more in other parts of Cali
