as late as the 70's many retail stores had stationary tube testers, mounted on cabinets. Tubes were used in everything from TV's to stereos, radios to amplifiers. The cabinet had replacement tubes for Sale. Anytime you turned on a device with tubes it took several seconds for the tubes to warm up and start working. As they were warming, they made a very distinctive humming sound.
In Michael Wallis’ wonderful book, Route 66, The Mother Road, published in 1990, he describes in detail Amboy. At this time, the motel, filling station and cafe were all in operation and run by the Burris family. By the time I first visited Amboy in 2006, all 3 were closed. Fortunately, by the time I made my last visit in 2012, the motel and cafe were still closed, but the filling station was open selling not only gasoline but snacks and cold drinks.
Wow this place is so cool!! Definitely gunna have to check it out in person nxt wk since I'll be kinda sorta in that region nxt wk! I saved the other 2 parts of your Amboy videos to watch later. I'm a new subscriber too. Looking fwd to more of your explorations!
@@thePlanetravelercom plus I've always wanted to check out Roy's. I looked up Amboy to where it was in relation to Cabazon and I might as well since I'm kinda sorta by there anyway.
A tube tester is meant to test the tubes in old electronics like stereo and guitar amplifiers. If the sound started to suffer, you could use the tube tester to figure out which tubes to replace. Interesting find! Juan Pollo is located in the Inland Empire and is amazingly good! Albert Okura intentionally did not expand to the LA area to keep the operation on a smaller scale, which is about 26 restaurants strong. I believe you're correct about the properties you mentioned that he owns, but I'm not sure about the post office. However, the school and other surrounding properties are on BLM land. I hope to gain the courage to explore that area some day, but I have always kept on the street side of the fence! Awesome views from the tower! I've never seen Amboy from that view before! Thanks for an awesome video, can't wait to see parts 2 and 3!
Hey, thanks for watching. I saw a video that the owner of Roy's Dinner and Motel owned the Post Office. The USPS was going to close it unless he became a contractor so that's what he did. He said it's costing him money to keep it opened. It seemed pretty credible, but I don't know. I usually try to stay on the right side of the fence too, but curiosity got the best of me..
Just came across this but I must say that if I owned that place and gave you permission to go through my motel I would have been a bit upset that you were moving and touching things. Keep your hands off things that are not yours unless they give you expressed permission messing with their things. Cool video though, just be respectful of people’s things.
Trust me, Amboy is a deserted desert town and the motel area (and the town) a real dump. I think the producer of the Vlog is giving his vid the Twilight Zone treatment because in reality the only reason they'd want to keep you out is for their insurance. He may have had to sign a waiver or something to enter the fenced in area. The motel rooms are all essentially left to the ages and haven't been open since the 80s or 90s. Buster Burris wasn't able to unload the place on anyone, so he just locked the door and left. It's been purchased since then and I think the old diner is sort of open with cold drinks and sandwiches but no diner food or meals. And the gas pumps are usually working as well. I keep hearing stories that the place will reopen with the motel and diner leading the way. Trouble is the workforce has to be brought in. Burris said getting help that wasn't coming with a string of problems was hard even then. So, we'll see if the new owner actually opens the place. He'd better hurry because traffic on the road has already started its post-Covid drop off from almost record highs along Route 66.

I am a former alumni of Amboy School.
The old car is a Packard Clipper, you can tell by the ship's wheel emblem on the steering wheel.

It's really an amazing place. I made three trips out there last year, just to explore the place.

That's the funny thing about Amboy, you gotta make a deliberate effort to see the place because it is in the middle of no where. It's worth it though.

Is Gas 7 dollar,s a gallon???😢
Good video. Your intro is too long.
Yeah, no body has patience for intros on UA-cam :) Appreciate the feedback
I have learned to just press 1 when a video starts to bypass the intros. it usually works just fine!
