Just adding that I was relieved that the issue was one of Matt’s professional obligations being the reason for cancelling the ultra, not some awful injury or health issue for yourself or your daughter. I’m glad that all are ok, and that this is just the life of a soldier impacting your training. There are plenty of events, and you’ll absolutely ace the next one you enter. 😊
Girl, I think you’ve made the right move by not doing the ultra. There are so many reasons as to why it wouldn’t be sensible right now. My husband isn’t military but he works a 5 on/3 off rotation abroad offshore. I’ve got 2 kids, one of them autistic and work 3 days a week. I’ve just started a new running plan with the aim to do a half marathon later in the year. Our time is so limited and precious when we solo parent especially without support from family. Completely give yourself some grace ❤ summer time is nice just to be out and enjoy the running! Do you still have a treadmill? I have one in our garage and usually do one of my 3 runs on it at some point in the week. Absolutely love your vlogs and following along with your journey. I’ve only ever ran 12km so you are totally inspirational to me ❤
That’s awesome that you’ve got your half marathon goal, you’re doing an amazing job with all your responsibilities you deserve something just for you 🫶🏻 I don’t have the treadmill anymore, that would be very handy for when I’m solo but I’m not sure where it would fit in this house 😅 I’m so happy you’re enjoying the vlogs! 😀
When I was marathon training and struggling to find longer routes/trying to stay within 2 miles of a loo (lol) I would do a cloverleaf - run out for x miles in one direction, find a left turn, run x miles in that direction, find another left turn, run x miles (further than the first two) in that direction and then find a right turn, run x miles (same as the first two distances) and then come back home. So 2 miles away from my house, turn left, run 2 miles away from there, turn left again, run 4 miles that way, then 2 miles from a right turn, and 2 more or so back home to make a rough 12 miles. It worked most of the time but probably does depend on your local layout! x
Thanks for the video Lucy! Please keep them coming as they inspire me and motivate me to get out and run! On Sunday I did something I’ve never done before, I ran a 10k non stop in 58 mins. Not sure if that’s a good time but I’m not interested in times at the moment. I just kept going. I would like to sign up for some local 10k events happening over the coming months but I lack confidence and suffer with social anxiety. It’s something I need to work on. Anyway keep up the great work 🏃 🏃♀️ 😊
That’s awesome! Well done! It’s a great time 😀🙌🏼 I understand, I’ve felt the same lack of confidence in the past. Before I ran my first marathon I was petrified! I told Matt that I was scared about the race and he told me “Do it scared” so I did! And it ended up being a core moment in my life so far. Sign up the races, you deserve the success! I believe in you 🏃🏻♀️💪🏼
I think it‘s a great time 🎉 Wish i could run that fast 😊 I did my first 5k last week and it was amazing, i usually don‘t like being with a lot of people but everyone minded their own business. You just have to go for it! I‘m rooting for you ❤
I've watched some of your videos today and just want to say congratulations on your running journey so far. I've ran for years and love to see others discovering his running can transform their lives. Your enthusiasm is infectious and will get you far!
Heat gets me too. I'm not typically a hot sweaty person, but I generate so much heat when I run it's ridiculous (I'm always beet red). I ran Saturday morning and while it wasn't blazing hot, it was very humid with a lot of sun, so I just felt like I was baking for most of the run. Last night some storms came through and cooled things off a bit, and my run this morning was so much more comfortable. I'm running my second 5K on July 4th, and I'm hoping the weather won't be totally ridiculous. I also signed up for a 7K in August, which is another very questionable weather related choice.
I wish you the best on any future running or race plans. I am post op on one surgery and pre op on a different surgery. I am doing what I can when I can. Last week I couldn’t get my heart rate out of zone 3 for an easy run. And today I did 5km all in zone 2 and it felt amazing. I am grateful for every run I can do. Fingers crossed I’ll get to sign up for a 10k this year! Thanks Lucy! 😀❤️👟🏃🏻♀️🌈
I hope everything goes well for you and you get a quick recovery. That’s really good that you had such a great 5k 😀 I’m sure you will! I’ll keep my fingers crossed for us both to get the races done this year 🫶🏻🏃🏻♀️
I can't imagine what emotional ups and downs you go through. You're a fantastic woman, gal, and you're going to see your time back in an Ultra when its right. Sometimes us "fly by the seat of our pants" types need to digest our dissapointments, and regroup with a game plan we can stick to (minus the surprise days that can't be helped). In your case, I think that later year Ultra would be very smart. I hope it works out. Worst case, say it doesn't. Be prepared for looking for that next opportunity and stay distance-prepared. If you are going for your best time, you need to be fair with yourself and allow proper distance training so the result *doesn't* dissapoint. Any 5ks or something fun but shorter you can enter and do maybe on a weekday while Little Bit is in school or on a weekend when Matt and Chloe can cheer for you? You can keep up the vibes of a race that way while you prepare for another big one? Just a thought. 💜 Today, I ran to this video, and was just going to go to 20 mins total bc "I got nothin" in the tank. Then I thought "ok I'll add on Sultans of Swing" and round it off at 25. Then I was like "just do 30" and I put on Running on Empty (lol) and then just made it a 5k. I threw in some Fartleck also and man I don't know how I did that other than a mind game-those songs make me think of like a Forrest Gump sound which puts me in the mindset of "distance" running! 😂 This 5k today was LONG with what I did not have to give! Its a worthwhile struggle, isn't it? Lots of love your way, Sister! 💛
I think I’ve noticed the heat affecting my runs as well ☹️ and it never used to bother me, I guess I’m just getting old 🙃. I definitely think you made a good decision, if it is that bothersome to you then you shouldn’t do it! You want to enjoy it and not be miserable the whole time! It’s all good!
Have you looked into an event that is "do as many laps as you can in X time"? Here in Oregon we have quite a few ultras where you sign up for 12, 24 or 48 hours and run a loop that varies from a few miles to like 10 miles. This takes away navigation concerns. Plus, no one knows your pace because everyone is just running.
Yes, I’ve got my eye on an event in August like that 🏃🏻♀️ I’ve also been chatting with Matt about an event next year just like this, I really like the idea of them. I adore Oregon! I’d love to get back there and do an event like that 🙌🏼
Ah , the pescy hills and in the heat nonetheless! Sometimes I stay at my moms home in northern germany. Its tucked close to a biosphere reservation and its very hilly - think of the hobbits shire. This year it was the first time running there for me and it really was an...adjustment. HereI can choose to do hill training, which I love, but only if i want! it! If every walk or run is hilltraining, I would not love it, especially, since I have good and bad days. In the other hand its a very beautiful landscape with lots of lakes, where my area, close to Berlin, looks a lot like yours plus some woods.
Aw that does sound very picturesque 🫶🏻 Having the decision to do hills taken away, and being made to do them all the time is what I’ve felt like since moving here 😂
Have you thought about doing a smaller local race? Usually you can enter much later. My club has a local race calendar on their website which links to maybe 40 races in June alone. Maybe a trail half marathon over summer would be good preparation/motivation for a winter ultra?
There was a half marathon recently, about 40 mins from where I live, but I just didn’t know until Matt mentioned it 😅 I think it would be a really good idea to look even if it’s for the weekend ahead.
Lucy, when you go for your runs, do you slather yourself with sunblock to keep from getting burned? Or do you go early enough that sunburn isn’t much of an issue.
How long did it take you to get to your actual pace? And how long did it take to lose your weight overtime? I have been struggling to lose weight my entire life it always goes and comes but I am running a lot more but after 2months feeling discouraged about losing weight since I only lost 5 to 8lbs which is up and down. But I do feel stronger was able to run 5miles for the first time without stopping during my 7mile training. So j don't plan to stop but want tell myself my pace and weight will improve with time.
It took me around a year and a half to get most of the weight off and get close to my pace now. That’s such a big achievement, well done! 😀 You will definitely improve with time, I remember feeling like that! Keep going 💪🏼🏃🏻♀️
@@lucyshawvlogs thank you so much your words help to know you overcame these thoughts and fears that I am currently experiencing. Tomorrow my 15k so I'm confident I am ready thank you for all your inspiration. I would have never considered a 15k a year ago. Especially after injuring myself from my first attempt at 7 miles
Not exactly related to this vlog, but when I am running I get so much pain in my calves and I have to stop so often to stretch it. Can you recommend anything I can implement to help with this?
I’ve had this issue before and back then I started strength training them by doing calf raises. I also made sure to stop and stretch them out throughout each run. Eventually this helped me.
Oh thats sad. But you WILL run another event for sure. And training, prep, events will get so much easier, when your daughter gets older (I understand this has not been the reason here).
yeah, but you're LucyShaw. When something blocks your goal, you work to overcome it and come out stronger on the far side
Made my day! 😀🫶🏻

I’m glad that all are ok, and that this is just the life of a soldier impacting your training. There are plenty of events, and you’ll absolutely ace the next one you enter. 😊
Yes that is very true, it would have been terrible if it was a health issue but thankfully it’s just logistics again 😫😅 Thank you so much! 🫶🏻

It’s sad that it didn’t work out for you but there surely will be another, even better opportunity 😊 I‘m sure you will make it happen soon ❤
Oh, no! I'm sorry to hear that. 😔 Maybe you'll get rewarded with a spot in next year's London marathon. 😉 I surely hope you the best of luck. 🍀
Oooh that would be the best!! 🤞🤞I would panic the whole time until the race incase Matt comes home and tells me is going to be away or something 😂

I put sun cream on if I’m going to be out for a long time and I think about it beforehand 🫣😅 I’ve not had any real issues with sun burn thankfully 🙌🏼
You''ll run that ultra later...🥳
I’m gonna try my best! 🏃🏻♀️😀

What dose a Brit consider a heat wave. I live in Oklahoma and its 90+ today. It has not even gotten hot yet. Lol.
Ahh that’s hot! 😅 I definitely would hate running in that heat 🥵
