Hi running buddy! Today I reached a big goal of mine. I went from 3 minutes walking to 2 minutes (and 1 minute running intervals). It was very hard but I did it! And the first thing I thought was that I needed to tell you! I knew you would be pleased for me. But, I am sorry to hear about your injury 😞 I hope it has improved or if not, that you are resting. It is so hard to prioritise ourselves when it comes to spending money on ourselves. Hope you find good shoes!

Congrats on the transition to running intervals. Well done you! It’s major to make progress, either at the start or after an injury. I’m sharing your excitement at reaching a goal. 😊

Lucy, how much strength training or cross training are you doing? If you haven’t, I would recommend adding in a couple run specific strength sessions into your week. You can do them at home and there are a lot of great sources on line. Also for some cross training, try power hiking up and down some hills (your favorite right?!). It’s a great way to build your stamina and get into your target heart rate zone without the pounding on your feet and ankles of a run. Plus hiking up and down targets different muscles groups than just flat running. I also love a good bike sesh for cross training. It’s a great low impact way you can still train with certain over use injuries. I have used bike sessions to stay fit through injuries in the past and was still able to safely participate and finish in some big distances without having issues after the event. You will over come! It happens to us all in this sport of distance running.

Since Matt got home I started adding strength training to my week because I now have more time to get to the gym. I have felt so much stronger recently but because I’m in pain I’m worried about going to the gym now 😅 Thank you so much 😊🫶🏻

Sounds like it could be planter fasciitis? I have had it a while back and the only thing that helped was wearing a pair of crocs around the house! The pain went away and I’ve been able to exercise again, hope you recover soon and really enjoy your videos 😊☀️xx

So sorry you’re injured but it is nice to see you are a regular person who gets injured-and takes time off. That is really encouraging for me to see, as I can be quite obsessive about exercise and ignore my body when it’s telling me to rest. So, even in injury, you are so encouraging and I know you’ll be back and stronger than ever soon!

I’m not really sure what your injuryis, Lucy, but it reminds me of some issues that started when I was running in Hoka. They wore down so quickly, and when they did, I would start having subtle ankle issues that eventually turned into plantar fasciitis. I got Asics Gel Nimbus with a personalized running store orthotic which has helped, and slowly built a shoe rotation by shopping at outlets and catching deep sales on older versions of recommended shoes. I also saw a podiatrist who specializes in sports medicine who was great but really just confirmed a lot of what I learned on UA-cam regarding PF. I now do lots of calf stretches, and if a niggle starts, I ease up on running and spend more time doing running specific strength training. I’m happy to report that I haven’t had any issues in maybe seven months, which is an improvement for me. I have hard floors and I still rely on crocs or Oofus or whatever they’re called inside.

I’ve since learnt that this is what I have! When I get my new trainers I’m probably not going to try Hoka again 😬 Thank you for letting me know how you have managed it! I’ll be sure not to ignore the signs if this happens again 😅

People don’t talk about how expensive it can be to always have functioning running shoes because so many influencers are just gifted loads of trainers and talk about having hundreds of “rotations”…I can only just about afford one pair of decent shoes at a time let alone multiple ones!

Hey Lucy, when I started parkrun (parkwalk) in Feb, me 60M and unfit, I got an Achilles tendon niggle from not warming up and ignored it due to getting hooked on wanting to improve my time. Slowly but surely got worse. Tried the exercises that I found on youtube for a month with no improvement, then I heard that is was called an overuse injury, so had the next month off all exercise (2 months all up).
So I did the thing that I should have done at the start and went to a physio. 3 visits and 1.5 weeks and today went for a short walk as a tester and no pain. On my journey now and can see light at the end of the tunnel. What did I learn? There are people out there that can help me achieve my goals and I am not going to be able to do it without them.
Get your heel looked at, don't be like me. Love and respect to you both, Robin.

Hi hun. I think you may have plantar fasciitis. I've had it before and had to go for physio which didn't work and then ended up up with an injection from my Dr. It went in the end.
I'm currently off running again after my sciatica has reared it's ugly head again. Hope we both get better soon DND back on track. Tdkd care. Cx

I have plantar fasciitis as well, it hurts alot more after runs and you walk on a hard surface. My physio recommended putting a slipper on after a run so your not walking on hard ground and the arch of your foot falling.

Oh Lucy!🤗🤗. I guess I’m been in that position for 8 months now. Still recovering. Put training for 1/2 marathon over a niggle in my shin. Had got so good at reading my body and avoiding injury too. But weather and work pushed me to go out when I should have rested. Now I’m still recovering from what we think was a stress fracture. It didn’t get time to heal initially because I kept trying to hop or run on it to see if it was better!🤦‍♀️. By the time Physio sent me for X-ray it didn’t show up, and may never of done. 2 weeks in a moon boot did help. Personally I think it should have been longer but🤷‍♀️.
Shoes have been a big one for me too. And as a woman, wife and mother, we tend to put other’s needs before ours.
You are normal!! And we love you for it💕

Hey Lucy!!! YES - going through a similar thing myself- bought some Novablast 4's for xmas as a treat/motivation for running. They are by any means worn out - still look and feel great. Except both my index toes (not the big toe, the next one :) ) are going black and bruised after each run. I'm currently about to finish a 10K program - ready for my half marathon plan to start (for September half-marathon)!
I keep ignoring the pain as it goes away before my next run, and the shoes themselves have bags of room. Just don't know if it's this shoe, and I need to try something else.....
Really enjoy all your videos - always watch to motivate before going out the next morning for a run!

Ach, Lucy, how annoying! I ignored pain during a long run last year, and it cost me 10 weeks of training. When I sought treatment, the physio said, “Hmmm, so what did we learn?”. Painful, but permanent lesson. Hopefully new shoes sort you out. 😊 You’re worth good gear, Lucy. Don’t forget that.

Yes a couple years ago I started walking outside and way over did it, just went at it hard because I was enjoying it.. I ended up having everything from my hips down hurting.. My ankles have been sensitive ever since.. I tried running on it 3x on the treadmill 6 months later, and it flared bad.. it has taken almost a year to be able to walk again pain free.. I now am very strict on when I walk, only 3x a week now.. I really want to get up to running but taking Uber slow.. I also have heard Hoka hurt the feet, so maybe I need a new pair of shoes.. Can’t afford it yet.. I want to do one of those gait test for a recommended shoe..

Oh, btw not saying this is warming up or strength training related, but I would like to recommend the Julia Reppel channel for warm up, mobility and strength work outs. Or if you are just stiff on a rest day (there are videos for that) Its a really nice channel, very motivating, and really unique workouts. They are a little bit gamified (no talking, but you see a progress bar in the videos) and that really motivates me to do them. And if you cant run, perhaps there is an arc trainer in your fitness studio? They are no impact "running" machines .

Sounds like plantar fasciitis. Stretch your calves diligently every day. Take an anti inflammatory. I've also used tape specifically for PF that really helped. But stretching your calves is key. Take the time to get better.

Oh gosh. First I want to say I hope you feel better soon. You're lucky to have someone very experienced in running. My husband is a Marine and when I started running with niggles and pains he would tell me to stop whining and get out there. He said that lots of people get niggles in the beginning of their running and that's when I started to use strength training as a sort of physical therapy. Now, I do think it's a good idea to see a doctor and I'm 100% sure Matt knows what he's talking about, but the niggles and pains I get were often healed by getting stronger. However, some niggles I've gotten were a result of imbalanced training and I had to learn that lesson the hard way by doing my last marathon in pain because we had already spent a lot of money to do the marathon. So my last marathon was so slow, but I did survive and now I try to pay better attention to balance in my strength training. Annnd, I also used to ignore some nonrunning related health problems to finish a marathon because I was terrified to stop running, even for a little while. But I did stop running on occasion to heal and get better. It's important to see a medical professional regularly. I did get better after 3 months of not running, though I did a lot of walking instead. I'll keep watching for your videos. I imagine you'll be getting new shoes whether you want to or not. ✌😜

  • @atrixa1991
    @atrixa1991 3 місяці тому

Yeah, I would often get knee issues if I kept a pair of trainers for too long. I used to buy discontinued trainers for cheap that wouldn't last long (I suspect this was due to the foam degrading over time, even just being in the box). I bought a pair of Brooks glycerins last year for marathon training from a running shop and absolutely got my money's worth out of them because they lasted so much longer (700k+). Best way I've found to stay injury free is to buy decent shoes (I keep some money aside when I realise they're near the end), and do strength training twice a week. Best of luck to you!

I just recently started running, but I am a rock climber and yes I had several injures. The trick for me was listening to my body, allow resting until inflammation was completely gone, using high % arnica cream everyday. then start to train very slowly, climbing far below my normal level, to regain fitness and muscle strength without putting too much stress to tendons and joints. Courage, take care of yourself and it will pass.

On the one hand, don't beat yourself up. Lesson learned. On the other, hidden blessing delaying your shoe purchase bc you had unexpected expenses coming your way!
I think you DEF can "afford" to have booked this bday trip (GOOD DECISION) since you need to make sure you take it easy with your Nike's or stay off your foot (whatever you determine is best with Matt/a doc if you think you need a scan) *before* getting on with your Ultra traning. Imagine, you'll be in top form, new shoes by then, ready to train and conquer in Sept! It's all ok! 💛
As for me, I have pushed it with arms/lifting when my neck was warning me and my neck/upper back have gone out for about 3-4 days at a time. I've learned, but it took me a couple times. 🤦‍♀️

I have made that mistake about delaying buying new shoes. It ended up being more expensive because I had to go to the doctor, get orthotics, and see a physical therapist. It cost so much more than new shoes (in USA) and I missed out on running and a race.

Yes Lucy I’m currently in a similar situation. I’ve had a gait analysis (after your advice) and have a new pair of trainers recommended by the store but unfortunately I cannot justify the £130 price tag this month when I have other bills to pay. I definitely need them though as like you I’m suffering injury due to overuse of a pair of trainers which are knackered. I’m hoping next month I will be able to afford them. Best wishes and speedy recovery.

You probably have what is called planter fasciitis. I have it in both my feet. It is very very important that you keep up on your trainers. You can’t run in old ones. My podiatrist said never walk around your house barefooted and when I have a flare up I have to get steroid injections in my feet. You might have to go see a doctor if it doesn’t get better.

Don't regret you're decision, you did what you thought was the best decision. Also, B-Day trip was worth buying. You can recovery from the injury of the trainers. I literally was running with my trainers way too long and ignoring it, I was in pain couldn't run at all but after a few days off, salt foot bath soaks, and stretching I recovered in no time. My new trainers eased any tension immediately. I decided to purchase older trainers that are on sale to have as a back up trainer. Trainers are expensive when you get the latest edition but if you get the older editions they are typically awesome deals especially when a new trainer is released the brands lower their old stock. This way I have a spare pair when my shoes have run out of proper support. I have about 3x trainers at the moment and two retired ones that i actually enjoy walking in just no running lol But don't worry you will be back to normal in no time, listen to your body, look for deals on old editions and get a pair just to have, I hope you recover soon!

I ignored the pain in my shins because I could keep pushing through it and the pain wasn’t unbearable but then! ☹️ the pain went from a 4 to a 9 mins run and I could hardly walk home. I have been struggling so much for almost 2 months and I have a 25k trail run coming up and rather than feeling prepared I feel unprepared And out of shape. I feel for you - I have some plantar fasciitus. It started before I began running, but it was so infrequent and fleeting that I never gave it much thought or even really knew what it was. A lot of the symptoms are similar to what you're experiencing.
I am now better acquainted with this problem, since I over did it running back in the winter and made it flare up big time. What helped me was to let the feet calm down a bit, and gently stretch them first thing in the morning and before bed, back track to the amount of running I knew my body was used to, and added more distance at a much more conservative rate. I also stretch out the backs of my legs after I run, because all that crap back in there is connected to the ankles and feet.
I was doing great recently, but then started having some trouble again after I decided to try using the heel locks on my shoes - bad bad move. I ran twice like that and my feet and ankles violently objected. I went back to the way I normally lace them up and kept my runs at a very easy pace. Ended up taking a few extra rest days when I went out of town for a long weekend with a friend, and that did me a lot of good too. There's been a lot of improvement. I got new running shoes recently that my feet also like (minus the heel locks).

I have to say, i also was holding out on running shoes, bc I thought, I will buy them once I start to jog (was walking minimum of 150 km per month). Since I m a pain patient I thought, back pain after walking just was normal. I twasnt and I realized that after I bought a pair of hokas. No more backpain; even after jogging. Im not rich, but know I see it as an investment in painfree movement, and isnt that one of the most important things in life??? I also have the glycerin 20 for inside, but I really feel a difference with the hokas somehow ( i have been i an ultra running store for that and they even let me run around a block with them bc they said: if u come back, u come back, if not, you are not :-D (thats in Berlin, not a village, mind you)). I really, really think, its important to go to a proper store with sports scientists working there and getting looked and and getting real advise, for the perfect fit for your style of movement no matter the colour of the shoe in the end.😉

Girl go get a foot massage and start doing foot soaks with Epsom salt. I have plantar fascitis and its no joke also get checked by doctor you need to get your tendons and ligaments checked. Also get some KTTape and wrap your heel and ankle

I had something kind of like this. Mine was a seriously dumb move though lol. I was only 5 weeks into my c25k training. While I was running a wood chip had flipped up and into my shoe. I ignored it. It wasn’t really painful, just annoying. I only had 10 minutes on my timer and I felt like if I stopped right there I wasn’t going to be able to keep going. I just wanted to finish. Big mistake. I know better. Luckily it wasn’t so bad that I couldn’t run again, but it bled and has left a sore on the back of my heel that has been annoying. It is healing well though. I learned a very valuable lesson though lol.
Btw, your videos are very inspirational. I too am on a running/weight loss journey. I also run with my dog a lot. She is an Alaskan Klee Kia which is basically a mini husky. I have a very small UA-cam channel but if you’re interested here is a link.
