    Whoops, he's got a problem here. Not to worry John Deere Wildman will take care of it. My husband has to do the big servicing to ours every year. We have a lot of property to mow. He always has to sharpen the blades as well. He sure does love his John Deere too Rick. 😎

    Rick, that puts tension on the blade startup. When you disengage the lever releases tension allowing the blade brakes to rub against the blade pulleys. Sounds like the one blade brake is sticking, not stopping the blade. Look a little deeper. Rust or debris not allowing it not to work. With the tension off try to turn both pulleys by hand. The one that will turn is the side not engaging the brake.

    Hi Rick I’m afraid that might not be a fix. I have the same mower. That’s a tensioner adjustment for allowing the blades to engage but if one blade spinning freely it’s the blade brake that’s the problem. I took my lower deck off which is simple and had to replace the spring that pushes the brake onto the pulley when you disengage from above the break stops the blades from spinning when it pushes on the pulley. But perhaps it was only the tension cable.. Love your videos!!

    • @RickMammana
      @RickMammana  Рік тому +2

      Thanks! Well if I need to replace the brake it sounds easy. So far the blade stops like it should.

    • @davidmcintosh3971
      @davidmcintosh3971 8 днів тому

      Mine was welded too, so I made one out of a standard hardware "L" bracket that's about 3/16" think, but longer than the one that was welded onto the deck. I used an angle grinder to grind a slot about 2" long on one side, drilled holes for the cable on the other side, cut the welded bracket off the deck and drilled a couple of holes in the deck and bolted my 'homemade' bracket onto it. The bolt holes are about 3/4" to 1" apart and I put washers under the bolt heads for maximum contact area. I used self-locking nuts so they wouldn't come loose and so far, it's worked perfectly. You do have to be careful that you don't adjust them too tight because, as mentioned elsewhere, there are brakes that engage the pulleys when the belt tension is released, so you don't want a too-tight belt pulling against the engaged brakes.

    I need your input. I put in a new deck belt. Now when I engage the PTO/blades and lower the deck the engine loses power. When I raise the deck engine runs stronger. If I don't engage the blades engine runs fine regardless of deck height.

    • @RickMammana
      @RickMammana  Рік тому +1

      Hmmm all I can think is just maybe a spindle or bearing is bad and with the new belt it's tighter causing more force on the spinning blade slowing the motor.

    • @ThrowAway-lk2se
      @ThrowAway-lk2se Рік тому

      @@RickMammana This is exactly the problem I'm having as well. I don't know about lowering and raising the deck, but as soon as I engage the PTO, the engine loses power drastically. It also rattles and vibrates a lot. A bad bearing or spindle seems reasonable. Any suggestions how to fix or replace one, or even identify which spindle is bad? Or would you recommend I take it in for service?

    • @RickMammana
      @RickMammana  Рік тому

      @@ThrowAway-lk2se Yes if you can't identify the problem I would take it to a shop. The deck seems real easy to remove although I haven't had to do that yet. Best of luck with it.

    • @davidmcintosh3971
      @davidmcintosh3971 8 днів тому

      @@axion3979 Some after market belts are longer than the stock JD belts, even though the length dimension is the same. The actual stock belt length is 103". If it won't tighten up, the easiest thing to do is just buy a belt that's an inch shorter. Or, if it's WAY loose, buy one two inches shorter. Some dealers stock 104" belts for JD 42" mowers, but that's almost surely gonna be too long. Stick with a 103" belt, or if that's still too long, get a 102". But ALWAYS confine the width to 1/2" so it fits in the pulley groove properly. There's always more than one way to skin a cat.
