Thanks for the video. I am that 80 year old fart you were referring to in your video. I could not push the handle back for reverse on my John Deere D105. When I saw your video a light bulb lit up in my brain. I got a long screw driver and my heavy duty blower and took out tons of debris a well as those needle balls from the transmission area. I did this without taking anything apart. The handle now moves smoothly in all direction. Brother, you saved a retired old man alot of money. I sent you some cash so that you can get a cup of coffee on me! Greatly appreciate your generosity, God Bless you!

Toooom Doooobyyyy! Nice work, Tom! I switched out a trans on an MTD Yard Machine a number of years back. First I ever did. Had a blast! Thanks for sharing this fun video! God bless.

Gotta love those plastic transmissions open to the air so you can fill it with grass and have problems

Tom to start a dedicated John deere repair shop! He has impressed John deere so much they have decided to change the branding to Tom deere running off a Doby straton engine. 😅

I'm sure you grow tired of all the nice comments and praise and stuff, but you just saved me a lot of money. With labor so high these days, it's like there's no such thing a small labor bill...and how much can you spend fixing a thousand dollar mower. Thanks again. It was actually fun!!!

I’ve drilled a hole into back plate and made a copper pipe blower to blow out the top of trans
    Works 😊

I ended up with this job also. An E100 with so little time on it, the rear tires still have that extra, thin rubber on the center of the tread. Tks for this video, it made my day much better and easier! This guy also went out to buy another mower. He told me to scrap it if I couldn't fix it,

After I got it back together, I saw it had 4 hours only on it! I just can't get over someone buying a JD for all the money and getting a plastic transmission.

Great Video ** Stop ** Before dropping transmission ** I fixed mine yesterday, stuck in forward for over 3 months. I used a Habor Freight Central Pneumatic 150 psi compressor with a HF Merlin 90 psi blow gun kit 64149. I placed the longest probe in the Merlin kit into each of the metal slots / holes around the transmission along with following the shifter lever and it blew 4 dust pans of wood chips and crap off the transmission. Shifts like it's brand new !!!

This pointer is coming from a D105 owner that has personally fixed the transmission pulley (2) times by dropping the transmission.

Great video!! I was at my camp with limited tools. Took off wheels loosened the debris and blew out both sides with the leaf blower after working the handle it freed up and worked.

I had to laugh when you mention about being 80 yrs old...well I am 77 and tho I love to work on machinery, just can't do things like this anymore. This is a excellent video, was just wondering if there is a adjust on one of the rods for the belt?
Mine is hard to get moving in reverse, have to press really hard on pedal to make it move, also same with the forward.

    • @TomDobyMowerRepair
      @TomDobyMowerRepair  6 місяців тому

no theres no adjustment, belt may be getting worn or theres debris in there

I would have stripped all the holes out in that plastic housing using the impact gun. I have a John Deere and I like it; I bought it last year; I am 67 and was cutting about 1 Acre with a push mower. Thank you for the content you share.

I have a Craftsman 42 inch tractor with one of those plastic transmissions. After about 8 years of cutting my lawn, and the neighbors front yard, I noticed it was getting hard to shift. I took out the battery and battery box to see what was going on, and sure enough, the top of the transmission was covered with millions of pieces of grass clippings. I thought I could just take a vacuum and suck out the dead grass in a minute or two, and soon be finished. Nope. The grass was packed down in between the plastic ribs molded into the transmission so tightly, that the vacuum couldn't get much of it out. It was as if it had been glued down in there. I had to spend at least 45 minutes breaking up the chunks with a screwdriver and sucking out the pieces with the vacuum. As fate would have it, there is just enough stuff in the way that getting the vacuum hose all the way down into the fins is impossible. Trust me, it can't be done. Unless you take the transmission out, you need to dig the grass out with something metal to get the vacuum hose close enough to suck the grass chunks out.
How that grass gets up inside there and packs that hard is amazing, but it does. That was one time I missed my 240 volt air compressor that Hurricane Katrina ruined.
After all of that cleaning ordeal, I thought that I could forget about it for years, but no such luck. Last year it started acting up again. This time I caught it early, so breaking the grass loose was a lot easier. For those transmissions, cleaning the top is a regular maintenance item. Thankfully, that expensive short drive belt on them lasts for decades in residential use.
When changing the grease seals on those transmissions, you want to go around the grease seals with gasket sealer, because even the new ones have a tendency to leak around the outer edge that goes into the transmission. Those transmissions are packed full of thick grease, so if a little oil is lost, you can ignore it. Just change the axle seals and forget about it.

It amazes me how this could be designed to fail like this with it being open to air but not being easily cleaned. I believe I have this same problem with my Husqvarna.

I appreciate this video this happened on my E100 yesterday looking at taking it apart with some general guidance from this video is there an aftermarket part that can prevent the debris from getting in there or is this just another maintenance item that you have to take care of season after season? I'm new to riders and got mine with the purchase of my home in January.
